9 gauge wire is what I used for my 5 trellises and the wire vise for my muscadines I planted Nov 2020. I did the 5 trellises diagonal to conserve space in the yard instead of a single row. The posts were 20 feet apart with a vine in the middle. I thought the 9 gauge was overkill because my great grandma had smaller wire on her muscadines, but hers were done the old fashioned way with the vines beside the end posts. Two years later I have two varieties, Ison and Fry that are so heavy with growth and fruit at the center where the trunk is. Even after tightening the wire vises that the wire still drooped almost a foot on the Ison variety. I could tighten the wire with a come along, but I opted instead to put a 7 foot t-post near the trunk to support the center weight and distribute the load with three posts (2 wooden posts and a t-post). It works well having a t-post near the center and I will be adding a t-posts beside the vines for the other trellises. For those reading this comment follow Ison's recommendation and use 9 gauge wire because your vines are going to need that support for growth and fruit and a t-post in the center is less intrusive.

I’ve heard of others doing t-posts at each vine. We use 9 gauge wire as well. I don’t think it’ll hurt to have extra posts. We need to find a few of the longer posts. Our new trellises are semi angled instead of a 128’ single row. Good to have another person interested In muscadines watching. Looking forward to your feedback.

lol, I’ve been watching various how to build a muscadine trellis videos and noticed the Hodges lumber hat… I’m in Greenwood off East Scotch Cross. I got some vines from the Anderson jockey lot and have no idea if they are male or female, or what variety unfortunately…just two bronze and one purple… but I’m going to plant them and see what happens. Edit: I see you have several muscadine videos so I subscribed and will have to watch them all…

Small world! Shoot us an email or message on Facebook if you need anything locally. FYI - The two we got from there turned out to no be what they said, but their good. (Checkout our other videos about them.) we ended up adding a bunch more from Ison’s or Bottom’s Nurseries. We also have an updated video on building trellises. It’s from when we added a row of Ruby Crisp. (Biggest difference is using larger end posts.)

We learned a lot from this first trellis vs our others. Don’t forget to check out that video. (We’d also avoid using 4x4 in the future unless it’s a very short run.)
