A dream that has grown for generations. Our families have farmed or gardened in SC since the 1700’s. Dean Family Acres was established in 2013 and expanded in 2016, we strive to be “Real People, Real Homesteading.” We are on 5 acres in the Upstate of SC, zone 8a where we garden, feed chickens, cats, dogs, rabbits and Boer meat goats. We also enjoy landscaping projects and trips off the farm with our family of 6. Thanks for following our journey as we post a new video every Sunday.

Just watched your video again and noticed you stated that the FryXTara was your favorite. That cross was named Hall. Fortunately Two of the six new vines I planted a month ago are Hall. This spring I planted 2-Hall, 2 Late Fry, 1 Early Fry and 1 Pam from Ison's All are leafing and growing except my Pam. Plus 10 or 11 Black Beautys, Scuppernong, and Homestead. Keep posting your videos.

Appreciate your feedback! Hall is a great choice, it and Pam are awesome. Ours are just starting to leaf out, did first fertilization this week. Won’t be long before the mature vines are blooming.

I never realized there were so many varieties. In fact, I thought they just grew wild. Eye opening. Thanks, Matt.

I didn’t either. It’s amazing the difference in each type. Thankful we had the opportunity to taste all of these. Gave us more to add to our list and know what our current types taste like.

This was a fun trip! Muscadines are favorite of mine and I gotta say I was a bit jealous. (Low Key) 😂

Carlos is my absolute favorite for fresh eating and wine!!!

@dirt_road_dana 9 месяцев назад
I also love Magnolia made in to wine so I am ordering that for our vineyard. Maybe that’s what yours is?? It’s larger than Carlos but maybe not quite as sweet and not as bronze.

Did hardly get any ripe this year. Raccoons or something ate them before they would get ripe.

@@DeanFamilyAcres Oh that stinks! Maybe next year they won’t get them all!

I love Cowart, Ison, Dixie Red, Supreme. I'm growing them in a large greenhouse in Seattle. I love the thick skin. You're spitting out the healthiest part of the grape. Ruby Crisp was awful. Bland and tastes nothing like a traditional muscadine. I'm replacing it with Paulk this year.

That’s cool that you’re able to grow them in a greenhouse. Skin is good for you, but not my personal favorite. Tastes and flavors can be different depending on climate, soil, water schedule and ripeness. Imho Ruby Crisp tastes much better when you let it get fully ripe. Hoping we get a few Paulk off our personal vine this year. (It’s in a semi shady area, so not as much fruit/flowering) We’ve been to Seattle once about 13 years ago, neat city back then. Good friend lives on Orcas.

I hope the drone parts work out for you. Now I have to get back to watching your Muscadine videos and learn what they are, what you do with them, and if I should grow some :)

Thanks again! We’ll see what we can do with them. Feel free to reach out or you have any muscadine questions. To answer your question, yes you do need to plant some. 😁

I NEVER chew muscadines. Suck them out of the hull, be sure and get all of the juice out and swallow the 'grape' whole without chewing it. Totally different and more delicious flavor..
@DeanFamilyAcres

Never tried not chewing them. You swallow the seeds?

I used to raise Supreme, ISON. and Late Fry.

Which was your favorite? We have all 3, but have to replant the Supreme, it didn’t make it. Hoping to have fruit on the others next year.

You can eat the skin on the muscadine. It's actually where a majority of the nutrients are.
@DeanFamilyAcres
@DeanFamilyAcres 10 месяцев назад
You certainly can. I prefer not to on most, the thinner skinned varieties make it much easier.

I think the vine you have is probably a darlene. Based on the large size, mid season, slight pinkish color and lack of production it seemed to have.
@DeanFamilyAcres
@DeanFamilyAcres Год назад
These don’t really turn pinkish. I’m not fully sure what they are. We’ll see how well they produce next year and see what size the fruit is.

Do you have another video where you discuss trellis more? I couldn’t tell which one is better - L or T
@DeanFamilyAcres
@DeanFamilyAcres 9 месяцев назад
I believe it’s in another video, but I know Dr. Connor talked about it while we were there. T is the preferred option. L was an experiment early on at the facility and is NOT the preferred method to trellis. Thanks for watching and reaching out to clarify!

Good video. I have Southern Home and Black Beauty and i am looking for a bronze to add to what I already have. Were you able to deduce what bronze you have planted? I am looking at Pam and Sweet Jenny. Also my wife has black berries planted. They make beautiful large berries but are not real sweet. What black berries do you grow?
@DeanFamilyAcres
@DeanFamilyAcres Год назад
Not 100% on our current producing bronze, but fairly certain it’s a Carlos. It’s SF. Pam is a female and very good (from my tasting at UGA Tifton), my bareroot from Ison’s died back after initially leafing out. Sweet Jenny is also female. Just be aware of positives and negatives of female plants. (Mainly lack of production in many.) Blackberries, we have 4 varieties currently producing and another 5+ that should produce next year. So far Prime Ark Freedom is our favorite. You have to make sure any blackberries are ripe. They should be dull black with no red and minimal shine. If they don’t they aren’t as sweet. Watering also plays a big part. Here’s our blackberry videos. ru-vid.com/group/PLT0ktYEnWc9V84U9-WhU-obYL-fl21LUh

I have tons of wild ones but they never did put on fruit
@DeanFamilyAcres
@DeanFamilyAcres Год назад
They’re probably male vines. Happens a lot with wild ones. Honestly once you try some cultivated varieties it’s worth the $12-15 for known varieties.
