Muscle Cramping and Fatigue on Carnivore? Try This!

In month 15 of the carnivore diet, I started to experience charlie horses in the middle of the night. I would wake up from sleep, and have to stand up out of bed to get this cramp out of my left leg. In addition to the muscle cramping, I was experiencing extreme fatigue. And this was more than just me being tired from working full-time and also being a twin mom to my wonderful 2 1/2-year-old toddlers. This was a deep level of exhaustion. Sleep did not help, taking a multivitamin did not help, and I could not figure out what was going on. In today's video, I talk about how I figured it out and what ended up helping.

I started carnivore in early January and was doing really well for about 3 months then started feeling very tired and getting excruciating leg and/or thigh cramps at night. I had been taking LMNT electrolytes every day and occasional magnesium. Unfortunately I still got occasional bad cramps at night. I fell off the carnivore wagon a few weeks ago when I had friends to stay for the weekend and have struggled to get back on it. I must admit the leg cramp issue was also a factor. Your video is so timely as I decided if I’m to restart carnivore I need to make sure both my magnesium and potassium levels are good and ordered some new supplements a few days ago. I hadn’t realised that Vit D3 can also affect/deplete - I have been taking 4000iu (plus a K2 MK7 supplement) most days - so thanks for flagging this. I felt so much better on carnivore initially so, armed with my new supplements, I’m going to restart asap.

Eat a healthy well formulated diet low in red meat and animal products high in natural foods like healthy vegetables, small portions of nuts, seeds and some portions of fruits. Small portions of food is the real answer to achieving your goals. Walk every day with a goal of 8,000 to 10,000 steps. I allow myself some plain yogurt with a mixture of fruit for dessert before I stop eating for the day usually around 6-7:00 PM. The key takeaway is to eat small portions. It is working great for me and I don't feel deprived. No leg or muscle cramps eating this way. Good luck!

I am going to follow what you suggested. This makes such good sense. I stopped my carnivore journey because of the cramping a couple of weeks ago. @JennyMitich As to why Inuit don't take D supplements. Inuit eat a lot of cold water fish which is high in D. Another commenter mentioned sardines... a good choice for D. Also our food sourcing often does not contain all the nutrients available in paleo times and we do not eat nose to tail(especially liver). A varied animal diet is a good idea. MANY factors can affect cramping and I would advise starting with more water and then perhaps try one additional supplement gradually at a time. Too much of one supplement can throw off balance in multiple others. Stress is a non dietary factor in many imbalances that is quite pervasive for us, so mind/body needs balance too. Supplements can be advantageous in the case of diseases/conditions developed over the years that need targeting. Like thyroid, where iodine can help accelerate healing and is lacking in food sources due to soil depletion which affects both plant and animal agriculture. Thyroid issues are often an issue with fatigue and iodine(often deleted in our food sources) can help the thyroid... but as is often the case with supplementing only one vitamin, it will need increases in selenium and salt as well. One commenter mentioned almonds which provide a LOT of selenium(which can easily become too much), helpful if supplementing with iodine. Low selenium can also have cramps and fatigue as symptoms. BUT be aware almonds also contain very high levels of oxalate... not a good idea. If you are not low in a particular vitamin/nutrient then supplementing one, just as insurance, can lead to a cascade of imbalances. Small, cautious steps. on balance, in my opinion, carnivore is a far simpler and more health advantageous way of eating than any other.

Thank you!! The first time I did carnivore the muscle cramps were always a big mystery to me, and I truly started to think it was a flaw in the diet... this makes so much sense. And this time around I've had no cramps cause I'm not supplementing vitamin d
@JennyMitich
@JennyMitich 5 месяцев назад
Nice! Yea, I think the D supplementation is the key, within the context of a carnivore diet. You're not getting as much magnesium from your diet when you are strict carnivore, which is fine if youre not supplementing with really high levels of D. I dont think you would have the same effect if you got the D from the sun.

Over 60k shuts down kidneys? I know people who take 100k iu/day to battle a type of candida (fungal infection transmitted by the bloodstream) and they're fine. I think you can waste VitD by taking too much, as it just gets peed out and not used, but I don't believe you can truly OD on it.

If you must supplement in order to not have cramps, insomnia, heart palpitations and fatigue (the most common issues people have on this diet, including myself) then it means the diet is not sustainable. It's as simple as that. That's exactly what carnivores say about the vegans. I have been on the carnivore diet for 4 months but i was absolutely miserable and then i switcted to Saladino's animal based and everything is perfect now. But carnivores are too proud and dogmatic to admit they are wrong. Strict carnivore is great for people who are seriously ill or sick , or for people who want to reset their health and metabolism. But the diet is just not sustainable long term. And i hear MANY stories just like mine, of people who added a small amount of fruit, dairy and honey and all the issues went away. Bottom line: if you must supplement, then your diet is sub optimal.
@JennyMitich
@JennyMitich 26 дней назад
Hello! I disagree. There are plenty of reasons to supplement. For example, if you have a CIRS diagnosis, you will need to supplement regardless of your dietary philosophy. Hashimotos, anyone that has had bariatric surgery, etc. If you want to supplement, do so. Now, for me, the muscle cramping was due to high doses of vitamin D without magnesium supplementation. I take D because i live in northern latitudes and we don't get a ton of sun.

The leg pain and Charlie horses are getting horrible the past week. I started the carnivore diet 4 weeks ago with the first 3 doing very well. Thank you🙏 I'm pretty strict about what constitutes a Carniovore. I wasn't a Carniovore until I finally stopped drinking coffee. Coffee is a plant and caffeine is a neurotoxin. I have been drinking 8-10 cups of coffee a day for about 30 years. It took a year to get rid of coffee, only then the uric acid crystals were gone from my body. Since then, I haven't needed an electrolyte supplement. Coffee is also a problem in Carniovore due to strong physical and social dependence. Coffee consumes our body and forms uric acid crystals, it has no positive health effects.

Guess what else depletes your magnesium? Menopause!! I never had a charlie horse until that started, and I had no idea why, until i googled it. I take the magnesium Glycinates every night and we also have a roll on that i can roll on my lower back and my calves for extra help. I find that magnesium also helps decrease any anxiety feelings. If I do feel a charlie horse starting, i quickly get up and just stand on that leg, with the other one raised, so that all of my weight goes to that troubled leg, and it clears up quite quickly. It took my a while to learn that trick too.

I follow Stephanieketo and she talks alot about the carnivore diet she's mainly keto but she says carnivore can be dangerous, People always use the Redmond salt on their meat a lot or salt in general and use too much sodium and that creates an imbalance of potassium and then on that same side of the coin when you create an imbalance of potassium you also create an imbalance of magnesium, From what I understand potassium is a more important especially on the carnivore diet, it's more important than sodium, The key is to basically get the electrolytes in balance potassium #1 then magnesium then sodium

Almost 10 months carnivore here, at about the 6 month point for me i was getting foot and leg cramps when i went to bed, spent couple weeks trying to figure it out. Learned that i was using to much salt for both my meals, so i cut out the salt for one meal, and increased my water and the cramps went away, haven't had them since! Only thing im dealing with now and this actually just started 2 weeks ago when it started getting warm/hot outside, btw i also live in Chicago but southwest suburbs ;) i been lethargic, my hydration has been the same. I work a night shift (8pm-4am) so i eat when i get home in the morning, and then eat a little before i go to work, this lethargy i know was low and no salt for my 2nd meal, and im discovering im not eating enough, nor getting enough fat. Never did carnivore in the summer so its a new thing for me, whats interesting is im only lethargic when im at work, and i still have my physical strength but when im moving around as its manual labor (work in a warehouse) i just have no energy regardless of my electrolytes and water intake. So something im trying to sort out, i also think my vit D is low as well, i do take vitD with K2, lastly i think what i need to start doing is go back outside and start running again in the forest preserve trail to get some sun.

I find it strange that this diet is sooooo good for you, yet you have to supplement with all these vitamins and minerals. Obviously something is lacking in the diet. I honestly think the diet may be for some that have health issues but I do not think it is overall healthy. The "carnivore experts" can tell you to get rid of fruits and veggies but the amount of water in plants is ridiculous and is probably why people that eat veggies in a balanced diet don't experience the kind of side effects I have been finding on the carnivore diet. I have experienced fatigue, loss of sleep and major dehydration from being on the carnivore diet. I will start introducing fruits back into my diet for hydration. It amazes me how people don't really know anything, even doctors, when it comes to diet. Everything finds balance. From my experience on carnivore and from research, dehydration is a major side effect of the carnivore diet. I have never had to be aware of my electrolytes before carnivore and I work outside in the hot sun! I would just drink plenty of water and I was fine. Now on carnivore, I dehydrate in hours and then it takes half a day to rehydrate. Terrible.

Hi @jennymitich I have been on carnivore for 2 months. The first two weeks were wonderful. Full of energy. All was well. Then, all of a sudden, my legs began to feel like lead. It has not stopped since. I do feel moderately tired, but my legs are unbelievably heavy. I mean, literally like LEAD. I'm 5'9", 124 lb. I can only do about 1200 to 1500 calories per day and then I'm stuffed. I take two magnesium glycinate pills each night. I walk in the sun at least 4,000 steps each day. I generally drink about 50 to 60 oz of water per day, including one packet of plain LMNT supplement. I am very concerned about my heavy legs. Have you ever heard of this? Thank you!

Hello! That is strange, I can't say that I have heard that one before. I would up the electrolytes and water for sure. And I would also up the fat to up the calories. 1200-1500 is not enough food. Also, fat is the fuel so you need to make sure you are eating enough of it. You could also try incorporating some vegetables, just to see if that improves your symptoms.

@@SoGrateful4You you’re very welcome! The reason I suggest some carbs is I’m curious if it’s still some keto flu/sugar withdrawal. If it is, some carbs would clear it up quickly. Otherwise, if you’re eating really lean meats, upping the fat should help. You need the fat 👍🏻

@@JennyMitich I see. Thank you. I'm wondering if you can still have keto flu even if you were on low-to-no sugar and low-to-no highly processed foods for years before starting carnivore?🤔 The only sugars I really consumed came through a few fruits and vegetables. My main fruits were blue berries and strawberries. Veggies were cucumbers, celery, broccoli... Thanks again for your thoughts and ideas. I will try to add more fat and calories. @@SoGrateful4You the only other thing I could think of is if you were eating a lot of high oxalate fruits and vegetables, you may be detoxing from that. I failed on Keto and Carnivore and Plant Based. Now I eat everything but I make sure to control my portions. For instance I wake up and have 2 cups of coffee and a little cream during the morning. I go out and walk around 7,000 steps. Before noon I have oatmeal with cinnamon, ground flax, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and some blueberries and a little almond milk. That holds me over till 3:00 pm. I then have a small saled of arugula with Olive oil and a portion of cottage cheese. Dinner is Broiled Salmon, small sweet potato and asparagus. I drink plenty of water. Kiwi for snack. I feel great. Am losing 1 to 1 1/2 lbs per week. And I really enjoy eating everything with strict portion control. Its working for me. I just couldn't live eating all meat, chicken, and lots of fat and missing out on all the wonderful varieties of bread, fruits and vegetables. The secret to my success is portion control. No Charley horses, weakness, dizziness upon standing, or any of the other crazy symptoms I experienced on keto/carnivore. I feel totally alive now and credit portion control for giving me my life back.Friday nights I have 2 pieces of pizza and a cold beer. Life is Good! Cheers everyone!

If you’re having muscle cramping try eating more beans, greens, and grains. Loads of potassium and magnesium and manganese and B vitamins in them. The problem with super restrictive diets like Carnivore is that you’re getting an over abundance of certain nutrients (which can become a problem over time- I’m looking at you heme-iron 👀), and a deficiency in other nutrients (Vitamin C, potassium, Vitamin K, magnesium, manganese, folate, etc). By all means, meat can certainly play a role in a healthy, balanced diet. But only meat? You’re asking for some long term trouble and pain. All the best to you. 💕

@ToddDouglasFox
@ToddDouglasFox 5 месяцев назад
@@kathleensaeva2649 my comment was to the channel. The product she held up is flavored. Most people will NOT drink unflavored. But my point is that since she has pinned high Vit D intake for not absorbing magnesium, there are other issues in what she is doing that could account for her low magnesium. If she was or is taking this brand of electrolytes, her effort to get sufficient magnesium could be thwarted or reversed by stevia. Additionally there is no balance in the unflavored (same as flavored) option: 1k mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, 60 mg magnesium. 1. How does this help the sodium/potassium pump which is a 1 to 2 ratio? 2. How is a strict carnivore going to correct the RDA from too little magnesium? The recommended two packets equals close to RDA sodium and still only 120 mg of magnesium, 2/3 deficient. Suggesting LMNT to resolve or even augment the magnesium issue is a dead end. It’s basically an expensive salt product. The company advertises paleo and keto by the way but Redmond’s and dietary potassium and magnesium is a workable option for all diets while LMNT is not. Potassium, I predict, will be the next in line for nutrient concerns. If the cell pump isn’t optimal, it doesn’t matter the diet, waste sits in an acidic state, and nothing can get repaired and regenerated. This is all readily available information. Too many seek answers from influencers which all too often is insufficient and thus wrong. Get potassium and magnesium in your diet folks. Be sure it balances with sodium intake and water, too much water is not going to be beneficial. Determine the proper ratio. And as a caveat, tap water is dead water. Water in plastic leaches plastic particles. Drinking water must be sourced from a healthy aquifer and in glass. Once upon a time, water had plenty of potassium, magnesium, sodium by the way. The levels are much lower, so get your electrolytes additionally. You’re welcome. 😉

Hi! I’ve been eating 95% carnivore for a year now; yay me! 🥳 I’ve had the muscle cramps mildly to badly most of that time. I also have been taking 10,000 IUs of D3 + K2 for most of that time, except in warm weather when I’m outside a lot. I’m 65, and live at the same latitude as Chicago. So, winter, and not much sunlight a lot of the year. I also have been supplementing with Mg + K. My symptoms got milder when I decided to drink less water. I believe I was washing out my electrolytes. QUESTION: I believe I/we get waaay more than 10K IUs of D3 when we’re outside with skin exposed to sunlight this time of year (I have a good tan going on my hands already!), so does this increase-the-Mg/K-minerals idea apply to the sunlight exposure way of manufacturing my own D3, too? 🤔 I’ve been doing a lot of yardwork the last couple weeks. Another benefit of carnivory for me: my stamina now is awesome! And I don’t get sunburnt! 🥳
@JennyMitich
@JennyMitich 5 месяцев назад
Hello! That is a great question. Sunlight is the most efficient way to make vitamin D, when we supplement we have to take a lot because only a portion of it is being absorbed. I dont think sunlight derived vitamin D has the same draining effect on our magnesium because it is being manufactured by our bodies. For me, I dont really use supplemental vitamin D in the summer because I dont need it, I am out in the sun everyday :)

@@JennyMitich As to why Inuit don't take D supplements.

Your body depletes electrolytes when you aren’t eating carbs. Carbs make you retain water which is where the minerals are. You can get a lot from meat only but most need a little more because there’s only so much you can eat. We don’t need to eat vitamins. We get it all in our diet. Minerals are different.

well .. if you have these issues and must supplement, maybe its not a proper human diet after all...

Hello! The cramping has nothing to do with the diet. It has to due with the vitamin D supplementation.

I’ve been doing carnivore for 6 months and while I haven’t had cramping, I have had a lot of fatigue even though I’m sleeping well at night. I’m currently doing 10,000ius of Vit D and 350 mg of Magnesium Glycinate but I’m going to increase my Magnesium and add the Potassium.

@@M.Sforza do you like fish at all? Lots of great vitamins and minerals in seafood. Also though, have you considered adding back in some vegetables or fruit? Carnivore isn’t for everyone, perhaps keto or just whole food low carb would be better for you. Why are you doing carnivore specifically?

@@JennyMitich I bought a small watermelon yesterday and raw honey. If this fatigue persists I will do a ketovore instead. I have to be honest and say, weight loss is a major goal but so is feeling better with chronic joint pain. I want to lose 35-40 lbs, and not an ounce has come off.
