I am FULLY on board with shitting on post-2012 Muse, but I wholeheartedly believe the first half of their career is some of the best alt rock ever made. Melon describing Origin of Symmetry as “a decent project” is a massive understatement. And the Radiohead mention is so tired and dumb… apart from Showbiz, the bands are not even remotely similar. But goddamn it is so sad to see them punch below their weight for basically a decade.
@xrayjohnson6972

Origin of Symmetry is a fantastic album. Songs like Citizen Erased, Newborn,Bliss or even Plug In Baby hit all hit a kind of Orchestral Operatic brilliance that you never see elsewhere with direct interpretations of the likes of Rachmanimov. The only genuine reason I could see a critic having to criticize the album is the breathing.
@superdrummerboy1028
@superdrummerboy1028 10 месяцев назад
My brother in christ the Radiohead influence is painstakingly obvious for a lot of their early catalog, especially considering where that band was popularity-wise at the time. Irregardless of whether Muse's music was bad or good( I personally really enjoy DO their earlier works) It's 1000% true lmao that's like GVF saying they're tired of Zeppelin comparisons
@Hopesfallout
@Hopesfallout 10 месяцев назад
@@superdrummerboy1028 Nah it's nowhere near GVF level of derivation. Earlier Muse might have Thom Yorke like vocals, but it's way different instrumentally. Radiohead had like one record, that has like 2 songs on it that could appear on an early Muse record if faster and heavier.

@@superdrummerboy1028 On Showbiz, yeah, they sound like a tribute act and Matt's singing hadn't reached the levels that Thom couldn't yet but after that but I really don't see how Origin is derivative of Radiohead and never seen an argument before. Absolutely agreed, OoS is a fantastically well put together progrock album and such a big departure from the more Britpop sound they had on Showbiz just two years prior (imo completely shedding any and all Radiohead comparisons). And their live shows were always borderline perfect every single time. I can understand disliking most of their work from The Resistance onward (I agree with that) but Muse’s early catalogue is absolutely dripping with some incredibly powerful stuff, including their B-sides! Muse are a fascinating case of a band that has experienced a kind of Flanderization - back in the early 2000's, Muse were a band that played a unique concoction of prog, space rock, metal, glam, grunge and classical music, and wrote songs about many things. There were a few songs which delved into political topics, but that was never the main thing they wrote about in those days, with most of their songs simply being about whatever Matt was feeling when he wrote them (usually while under the influence of mushrooms). However, at some point around the Resistance era - the first album that was mainly concerned with the political stuff - they began to accumulate a lot of conspiracy theorists in their fanbase who were attracted to those songs that were all about sticking it to some vague authoritarian group. Muse have seemingly spent their entire career since pandering to these people, since they know how much they can milk them for cash, while gradually driving all the other fans away, and most tragically, sacrificing their original early 2000's sound - what initially made people like them - in the process. Muse have never been able to capture the specific vibe that their albums from Origin of Symmetry to Black Holes and Revelations had again and it's a damn shame.

I initially got into Muse because of their INCREDIBLE skill as a trio. Muse can fuckin' PLAY, and they would take advantage of that by writing some DIFFICULT songs and brought insane energy when they performed them, especially live. It's that skill they would show off that made them so fun to listen to. I think most of us in the comments will agree that their run of albums from Origins of Symmetry to the Resistance was phenomenal. The 2nd Law and Drones had some decent riffs and ideas, but they were messy albums overall. What really pisses me off about Muse and where they are today is that they aren't using the talent that they have to their advantage anymore. They just keep putting out easy songs with unimpressive riffs, simple rhythms, and smooth vocals. I feel like that fucking Chelsea fan meme. There's no passion, no aggression, no vision, and yet they STILL have the talent to give us an album that'll give us that kick we're looking for. It's so frustrating. I'll just keep listening to their old stuff.

Fr, wasted talent is one of the most frustrating things to witness. It’s one thing if an artist is just not very good at what they do - that doesn’t really get my blood boiling at all. It’s a whole other thing when an artist clearly has skill and talent that they are consciously choosing not to employ because they can get away with being lazy.

At drones i finally gave up hope. Resistance was rejected by my brain after a year or two, and the second law gave me the illusion of being passable for just a few months. @Filip6754
@Filip6754 10 месяцев назад
You're not exactly right. They are still progressing as musicians. Origin of Symmetry's best technical effort was the Plug in Baby riff, which, similarly to most of Bellamy's guitarplaying of that era, can be managed by only playing downstrokes tempo-wise. By Will of The People, Bellamy includes full-on shredding solo passages in the songs, very difficult fast scale runs that he's never used before (not that it really works stylistically, but technically perfect even live). The drummer has similarly learned a double-pedal technique. They are eager to learn and experiment, they just kinda wrote themselves into a mainstream creative purgatory where they still sit. I think if they somehow lost all popularity and nobody knew them anymore, they'd record an album that could dwarf even Origin od Symmetry.
@lovelyy6491

And it's crazy to me because they do still got the talent, for a while I thought maybe that was gone somehow, but what they did with Origin of Symmetry remixed/remastered version was incredible. Their early albums are great. Muscle Museum, Newborn, Showbiz, Sing for Absolution, Map of the Problematique (to name a few) are still gorgeous, intricate and mindblowing songs. Top notch songwriting, compelling lyrics, and killer musicianship. As another commenter mentioned, I think Uprising was the beginning of their descent into cringe suckiness. While not a bad song, the commercial success of that single with it’s vague sloganeering, simplistic anthemic chorus, and generic rebellion call-to-action planted the seeds for the devolution of the band’s sound into mind-numbing quasi revolutionary stadium rock and blatant pandering. I used to admire the Muse boys as artists, but the cynic in me says they’re just all about easy money and fame now, given the huge nosedive in quality the past decade. That said, I want to leave room for the benefit of the doubt. Maybe Muse aren’t motivated by greed/chart success but a misplaced idea of what their fans actually want from them. Their highest streaming songs on Spotify are all from their early records, meaning the quality of those songs is still what drives people to them. I hope the band realizes that themselves soon enough.

I doubt this will be seen, but to add context to them taking the song from their set list in Malaysia, they replaced We Are Fucking Fucked with Resistance, a song about secret love. Probably a better overall message to fit in when you're performing in a country whose government doesn't like LGBTQ+ people. To quote the song, "Love is our resistance - They'll keep us apart, and they won't stop breaking us down - Hold me - Our lips must always be sealed" Saying it's a negative for people like Glenn Beck to have found common ground with Muse is somewhat of a non-point when we live in a world where right wing assholes say they like or liked RATM; I don't think that fact makes RATM any worse. And yes, the overall quality of albums from their first half to second half did have a drop-off. I will say their albums up to WOTP are, in my opinion, not nearly as bad as people make them out to be a lot of the time. I think the issue is the lows on the album are typically VERY low, but they also have some bangers. But yes, I listened to WOTP a few times hoping it world grow on me and haven't been back since. Not great. They still put on an amazing live show, though.

Honestly they should just stay mainly as a live band and not do any more albums, kinda like Motley Crüe did. It always surprised me that they rejected the idea of doing a greatest hits album, considering that would be at least a more tolerable idea than this piece of garbage of an album. If they wanted to release any kind of new music they could’ve released the greatest hits album with a couple of new songs, and there you go.

Muse were the band that got me into music. I didn't have much of a musical palate prior to learning about them; I was just listening to what was topping the charts. Muse were what got me diving into full albums, paying attention to lyrics (ironic giving this video's content), and analyzing song structure. I still think their first five albums (yes, even The Resistance to an extent) were very good. But I do agree that they've taken a massive nosedive beginning with The 2nd Law. I didn't even listen to their latest album, I'm so uninterested. Totally on board with the video's sentiments, I just wanted to throw out that their early work really had something good in it.
@-bielle2985
@-bielle2985 10 месяцев назад
For context: They replaced "We Are F*cking F*cked" (a dumb song about how we're all doomed and the world is ending) with "Resistance" (a song about love always resisting and always defeating hate). Say what you want about it, but they didn't censor themselves, quite the opposite. Edit: Also, i really recommend you take a look at the Malaysian subreddit to get an understanding about the 1975 story and how the singer's act actually made the government double down on the persecution against LGBTQ people. Praising an act that did way, WAY more harm than good to a group of people is weird.
@bramve5021
@bramve5021 10 месяцев назад
Wether the 1975 protested in in a good or bad way, that's up for discussion. But in the end, it's the Malaysian governement that is the root cause of this harm, not the 1975. Project your anger at the Malaysian governement which doesn't respect basic human rights, instead of at people protesting against that governement.
@-bielle2985
@-bielle2985 10 месяцев назад
@@bramve5021 the issue is: there are ways of protesting. And I don't think they chose the right way. You need to read the room of the place you're in. Yeah, I'm sure they had good intentions but in the end of the day, Matty Healy will return to his mansion in a 1st world country and the LGBTQ people in Malaysia will still suffer more for HIS actions. There are plenty of way more effective ways to protest than put a targeted group into a even greater danger.

I admit, I am a muse fan. When it comes to their lyrics, I feel like I've always been pretty forgiving for two reasons. 1: Matt Bellamy is the frontrunner and definitely leads the group with extremely complex and innovative composition (referring to their superior first few albums, not so much the recent ones), and I think that it's fair to accept some degree of compromise on the lyric he writes in exchange for all the work he did in blending genres and contributing to production. and 2: I never really wanted an outspoken protest from them against a specific cause. What always drew me to Muse was the sense of escapism. Their lyrics are like something out of a young adult sci-fi book and pardon me for being an absolute dweeb,as a high schooler, I thought those vague 1984 references were something super clever -- a fictional world that, i realized as a maturing, conscious milennial, mirrors the way the real world is falling down around us. Is it overplayed at this point? absolutely (no pun intended). And if Muse was so down to switch up their style so drastically on their last few albums, I think it's fair to expect a departure from vague political / scifi overtones. All this to say... I'm still a Muse fan lol. catch me at the gym going my 100% hardest when that Knights of Cydonia breakdown comes on.
@emmyrose233
@emmyrose233 10 месяцев назад
Your second point is spot on. I don't love Muse's lyrics but I've never felt that they were supposed to relate to our own world. It always came across as if they were writing from the perspective of fictional characters in some kind of dystopian sci-fi world.

They will always be my 2nd favorite band. I will say this, for each of their records post 2nd Law, they are definitely trying very very hard to make music they would enjoy. We arent enjoying it, but I can tell Matt Bellamy and the gang thought "yeah, Whammy Pedal dubstep is a good idea! 'Your ass belongs to me now' on Psycho is a good idea! I feel like the whole "muse sucks" thing was cool in 2012 when they were still making hits but at this point they're so irrelevant that I just can't help but look back and appreciate the great music they made from 2000-2006. Bashing muse in 2023 at this point is like kicking a dead horse. You're also looking at it strictly from an album perspective. Muse was one of the best live acts from that decade.

I agree, there have been good songs here and there after 2006. But their consistency was lacking. Their live shows still kick ass though for real, saw them live last year and they killed it.

ooof this is a tough one for me muse were my favorite band, from a bit before the resistance dropped, until like a year or two after drones, to the point i've made long lasting friendships with local fans, went to their hometown literally 6 years ago (i'm from latinamerica), saw them at reading festival's front row, appeared on the BBC streaming and got a setlist signed by matt and dom TR was my first muse release and didn't meet my expectations considering their past discography, so my friends and i waited for their return to form. drones was good imo, but can't say the same for the rest and i'm sure the issue has been matt himself this whole time ngl, i think it's obvious he holds the band's musical vision and he just won't leave his comfort zone. he won't go deeper in his politics themes, musical ideas, writing habilites, composition, you name it which sucks! they're very good musicians and matt himself is very talented, but he needs to accept some help to make his ideas come true in a well executed way. the man just can't humble himself and be vulnerable, and it shows. and he's dragging the band with him with that being said, i don't think the song issue is that bad. granted, i guess changing the song because its title has a swear word is super lame, but they picked resistance as the replacement, which is literally a song about hidden love. so i kinda see what they did there still tho, shows that muse/matt doesn't have a backbone. how are you so easily convinced to change a song because of a swear word, when that song is part of an album that invites to popular uprising and challenging the status quo? why did you call the organizers in the first place, why not change the song without letting them know? i hope they take the backlash as fuel for writing what they actually believe and stand for. i don't think that would be an issue for other bands, but muse has made those themes their brand and aesthetic, looking stupid in the process their live shows are still amazing and matt is a great showman tho, probably gonna see them again if/when they come back

i think alot of it has to do w them not wanting to let their malaysian fans down. they hadn’t performed in malaysia for 16 yrs prior to that performance, and the fans reaction to them performing resistance and stuff like that is what they were aiming for i believe. it meant a lot for them- look at the comments on muses most recent insta post from their performance in malaysia, there are like tons of positive comments from malaysian fans.

@@mikhaelamann.1810 you're right, i can empathize with them when it took 7 years to have a proper muse show in my country and that felt like an eternity hahaha. i bet malaysian fans are happy and i guess that's the important part, but we can still criticise the band for not having a backbone. although, to be fair, we're not in malaysia so we can't surely know what's the mood in there regarding this whole situation

Muse replaced The song WAFF from the Malaysia setlistn because it had swear words and replaced it with the rong The Resistance, a song that has become a gay anthem in MUSE circles because of it's mentions of love being suppressed by the powers that be. It was the best choice they could have made

I really dislike the latest albums, but still have found myself going to many of their latest concerts because of friends and family. The classics are still great, and the new stuff shines a little bit more live. They also put up an incredible show every time with props and effects. It gets cornier every time but you still have a lot of fun. I feel weird supporting them for getting worse every time but they do some of the most spectacular concerts. I specially liked Simulation Theory even though I was very cynical about the already tired 80's retro direction

Look, I understand where people are coming from when they say they liked the first 2-3 albums of a band better than their later work. I’ve seen this said about Coldplay and Oasis too, as well as a bunch of other bands. I get it, but people who harp on it so much and begin to say they dislike or even hate a band because of their newer albums just seems weak to me. There aren’t 10 songs by Pearl Jam I like more than the entirety of their debut record. Same goes for Chevelle and their 3rd album. I have my favorites, but just because I don’t vibe with someone’s later work doesn’t mean I’m going to write them off as sucking. I’d still say I like Pearl Jam and Chevelle, even if I don’t actively listen to more than half their studio albums. In fact, I say good for the groups that stick together, even if they rest on their laurels a bit. Musicians don’t owe it to anyone but themselves to make music, and adding songs to their library that their fans dislike doesn’t change how much people enjoy their early stuff. If you liked Muse in the past, but you think they tainted their legacy over the last ten years, that’s just on you. Your tastes don’t have to evolve with a band, and that’s okay. Going on and on about how you used to like a band, but now actively hate them is just for the birds, imo

i have a muse tattoo. i was a DIE HARD fan of the band for YEARS, like their music got me through my teen years. i love their albums up through the late 2000s, up until around resistance. i really really haven’t been able to get at all into anything they’ve made since then. i like drones okay, but man everything else from the 2010s on has been pretty rough. i like don’t and can’t call myself much of a fan anymore. their live shows are still absolutely unreal, i saw them on the simulation theory tour and it was unbelievable. but man i don’t like most of the music. i still frequently listen to their first three albums and i have a soft spot for bhar and resistance. but that’s about it. it’s a shame too, they had so much promise for the first half of their career. i called them my all time favorite band for years. but god yeah a couple songs here and there aside their stuff for the last eleven years has been terrible

3:02 - I'm pretty sure this song was written at the start of the pandemic and has sort of satirical tongue-in-cheek references of how people were hoarding toilet paper and stuff, but it's also got some real anxiety mixed in there as Matt has mentioned in interviews. At the time it was written, nobody knew what would happen with the pandemic. A vaccine was not even in development yet. It's like they made anxious overthinking personified by the lyrics of a song. As someone with severe anxiety, I can relate. I've heard it live and it was a banger. I also love that this song has the exact opposite message of their song The Void, which is super optimistic about the future of humanity. Muse are very nerdy and write about a lot of philosophical type stuff, and that's part of why I love them. They've spoken in interviews about how a lot of their songs were meant to be sort of ironic and over-the-top in a fun way. But they also have a sincerity to them and aren't afraid to write really expressive emotional songs, which I like. I feel like Fantano misunderstands Muse a lot. They aren't his cup of tea, fine, but I think it's unfair for him to say they're bad or shit on their music so much just because it's not his thing. But the weird thing about music or art in general is how different people's perceptions can be. To me, Muse has a very distinctive sound in their music, particularly the classical-influenced stuff. It's hard for me to understand how someone could listen to the last few minutes of a song like "Citizen Erased" and not be moved. But that's just how it is, no matter how good something is there's gonna be someone trashing it somewhere haha By the way, I think it's laughable to critique a piece of art on the basis of being "uncool". That's a concept that is extremely subjective and changes all the time. Muse knows they aren't seen as cool by a lot of people, and they have even mentioned this in interviews. But ironically, that not caring and nerdiness is part of why I think they are very cool. MGMT is another band totally unconcerned about being seen as cool... Read any of their recent interviews. I think Fantano needs to work on letting go of his ego and obsession with his image a little bit. It seems like he's afraid to be perceived as a nerd. Maybe that's why he killed off his excellent Cal Chuchesta character. I don't know the lore, but I do know Cal was funny af.

Muse is one of the rock bands that defined the type of rock music I like as I was growing up. It felt different and had its own identity compared to stuff released by others. The mix of space-synth, electric guitar, crunchy bass and piano gave them a uniqueness to their sound. But as time have gone I've noticed not only on Muse but many other bands and artists I follow, the way the music industry works, in which artists are expected to release the same album, with the same music genre over and over because doing other-wise is betraying what people know them for, makes them artistically stagnate. If you see the rock scene right now, many of the bands that keep releasing albums to this day, are mostly known for the records they made decades ago Thanks for listening to my TedTalk

Agree that muse sucks. BUT, haven’t many LGBQT+ folk in Malaysia openly stated that Matty Healy is doing them a disservice by going against the norms there? I’ve seen several people on socials talking about how they’d rather have concerts exist in their country than their messaging being pushed (even if Healy’s message is a good one). I see Muse cutting those songs from the set list as them giving those people a concert. I understand that it’s going against the messaging they’re putting in their music and yes there absolutely is hypocrisy, but I think at the end of the day they want people to hear their music.

In 2006, I had been away from radio music for several years. But “starlight” came on in a friends car one day and it was brilliant. Hoping they might be a band that sounds like that in general, I went and bought the CD. Outside of the 2-3 solid tracks, I tried to get into it for a few months (that’s what we did with CD’s to get our money’s worth) but it was ultimately a whole lotta inconsistent filler. I haven’t touched anything since.

It's sad, but it's kinda how their live shows went as well. They were absolute beasts at the beginning (tons of material on youtube), so much energy, so much intensity, so physical, a lot of spontaneous improvisation, matt screaming, going crazy, losing themselves... and this was mostly just them and their instruments. Slowly it was replaced with throwing more and more money at the extravagant, flamboyant and expensive gimmick props, lights, screens, whatever the fuck, which was cool at the beginning, but then the musicians, the people, became more and more distant, Matt stopped screaming, and things started to feel more and more staged and sterile... and here we are. A bit like seeing a small business of rebellious and ambitious friends become a giant mechanical corporation. A story as old as time, tbh. Still fucking love the old Muse to death. The musicianship, the intensity, the blend of genres, the melodies, Matt's voice...

Muse had a REALLY big hit with "Uprising" and they've been trying to chase that hit ever since without looking at why their fans liked them in the first place. Uprising isn't a bad song in my opinion, but it was way more simplified and direct then anything they made before and I still consistently hear that song in public and on the radio. I do really believe that it's not The Resistance album as a whole, but that specific song that made Muse what they are today, for better or worse.

Although the past few albums fell short, and sent chills up my spine in the wrong way with some tracks, to me they still delivered in songs like (the dark side, Reapers, Dead Inside, Panic Station, Supremacy, We are effing effed is cheesy but good, wont stand down, kill or be killed to name a few) I wont give up on them specifically because they are some of the best musicians rock has known in the alt category.

The 2nd Law was a masterpiece, it was musically amazing with a good variety of styles. For once the lyrics aren’t “rise up against the government “ but instead “the way we are living is unsustainable treating our resources as if they weren’t finite” Animals finally has lyrics a bit more specific critiquing bankers and massive corporations who keep taking more and giving less back.

I get your point about their messeging being usually cringe and all that. Still tho, I think they deserve huge credit and respect strictly for musical talent they have. I think it’s agreed upon that in their prime these three guys really knew how to put together a song that is well written, tastefully produced and just super fucking fun to listen to, like goddamn I can write such a long list of their songs that I still come back to and think to myself damn, how do you write a banger like that? Imo they stand out in terms of the musical talent value and it’s important to notice and appreciate them for that and definitely their weaknesses shouldn’t be covering up their strenghts. Also they are just so solid live, like fucking top notch, if you ask me they should be seen as a benchmark for how tight a band can be. Anyway I’m gonna share my top 10 songs of theirs that I just think if you’re a rock fun you really should give a spin if anyone cares at all. 10. Showbiz 9. Citizen Erased 8. Map of the problematique 7. The handler 6. Supremacy 5. Darkshines 4. City of delusion 3. Assassin 2. Plug in baby 1. Knights of cydonia

They were my favorite band and one of the only ones that I was interested in beyond the music. Its been so hard to call myself a fan. I still listen to the old stuff and love them just the same, but after the Resistance I have been enjoying their work less and less. To the point were I can't get through an album and listening seems like a chore. Its crazy that a band that used to he so creative and imaginative is now making the most derivative rock music today. Even Imagine Dragons is putting more interesting stuff. To their credit, they still are one of the best live acts. The live versions can make the worst song a bit better. At least they have that.
