One of the saddest and most powerful songs ever. The arrangement and the musicianship and the sound is beyond compare also. The orchestration, the vocal harmonies, the instrumentation -- everything. His vocals were almost operatic and wonderful also. The song always gets to me, because I LIVED it from about 2000-2009 I stayed in a very difficult marriage and fought to keep it together for the sake of my two wonderful sons. Even though my marriage broke up, I still have a good relationship with my boys. Staying in the house with my wife ripped my heart to pieces, but it kept my two small boys with a father who gave them love every day.

Elvis' voice, and what he did with it, with different tones, textures, and colors, skillfully going between them all with flawless agility - all in one song, full of emotion. The caring message of the song was matched with the feelings he put into his singing. imho a real gem

I this time in Elvis life,, something was seriously wrong he was overweight in his 40s, separated from Priscilla,didn’t look well at all, boredom was setting in,but his voice never let him down,so sad.😢😢🙏

@@michaelforbes4751 just my personal guess but I think his motivation in taking excessive drugs, etc., was primarily so he could keep his voice going

@@carolcliff5150 I don't think that was the case. He did take prescription drugs but he did have underlying health issues he unfortunately inherited from his mum who died at a similar age. He was never really overweight just bloated from his sickness.

@@Luis-vn4ue I totally agree about his underlying health problems, which must have frustrated him terribly. Nobody likes being sick. And I expect he tried to do whatever he could to keep singing and performing. Especially with all the other people relying on him for their financial support.

I'm 60 and South Korean living in Seoul. It's been passed more than 40 years since I entered Elvis songs after hearing My Boy which is my favorite out of Elvis songs. I often sing My Boy in Karaoke in Seoul, even 2 days ago.

What’s really interesting about Elvis is that Opera is one of the only music types that he didn’t like yet he sang on many occasions in an operatic style! And was praised for that! If you don’t have a religion listen to Elvis and you will get one!

😢I think I stopped breathing at one point. So emotional ....he sings a story with so much feeling...he pulls us into the song and we take the journey with him. His vocals are beyond beautiful. Thank you John for reacting to this song.🌻

This song, this version, was played played by me often after my divorce. I replaced boy with girls because I have daughters. The emotion is strong, especially the end where he holds the note in the word "Because", it always brings tears to my eyes. Great reaction, John. 👍

wow found one i have never heard.75 was the last time i saw him and was shocked by his weight gain you knew then something was really really wrong.almost from this point on his song choices were all on the sad side more operatic type his only way to challenge himself was with his voice and it NEVER LEFT HIM

Love this song, love Elvis ❤ he truly had a gift! He puts soul in every single song he sang, if you listen to all his live performances you can tell he was always giving his best, and it was a enormous amount of concerts, more than one per day, but even tired he was always his 100%, best singer, best showman, best voice. This song, recorded during his first recording session at Stax in Memphis in 1973, was tough on Elvis. It’s lyrical content, only months before his divorce from Priscilla became final, was so emotionally charged, it must have been very painful for Elvis at that time. According to A Life In Music “When Felton (Elvis’ A&R man) pushed for a third take, he exploded: “I told you to get this goddamn thing in two takes. I can’t sing it no more.”

When Elvis sings it's felt not just heard. One of his later albums; "Promised Land" had songs that I think were more demonstrative of where he was emotionally as an artist. " Honky Tonk Angel" was such a song that evoked his personal strifes of life. His loss is still felt today.😪❤️

Again right on point with your reaction John to a song recorded around the time of his split with Priscilla, so substitute 'girl' and you have it IMHO as something relevant and personal to him. As you quite rightly infer the recording has no auto tuners or clever acoustics but still emerges as a magic recording.

This song is very special. This is a father talks to his son. Is telling him why the family is not existing anymore in the way, the boy was born. And he tells him, what he is meaning to him. For a growing boy is this part very very important. "You are my life(Du bist mein Leben), my pride (mein Stolz), my joy (meine Freude). A father is giving his son an identity. He tells him, that he is good in the way he is and that he likes to spent time with his son. A son is first of all an innocent child and his dad got the power to make him strong, able to have relationships and being a future dad. All this points it is up to the father to mediate this to his son. He sang it with the right emotion.

Love this song! Here in Finland we have star who has been great star since 60's and he did this same song: Danny is the singer and Pojalleni is the song if anybodi wants to try it. Pojalleni means to my boy. 🇫🇮
