Musician reacts to SHINee 샤이니 COVER IU 아이유 Dear Name 이름에게 

SHINee's version of "Dear Name" is different than IU's original version, so if you haven't heard the original version I encourage you to check it out. If you pay attention to the lyrics of the song you will see why this song is so meaningful to SHINee -- SHINee's version of the song is dedicated to Jonghyun, SHINee's main vocalist who passed away 3 years ago. So the "Dear Name" they are talking about is Jonghyun. Fun fact: IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun. Jonghyun and IU were really good friends and when she heard "Gloomy Clock" she asked him to give it to her. Jonghyun always said that after hearing IU sing "Gloomy Clock" he knew the song was meant for her, and in hindsight he thinks he might have subconsciously wrote the song with her in mind. Because IU and Jonghyun were so close, she knows the deep meaning "Dear Name's" lyrics have for all of them, so she was surprised that out of all of her songs, this was the one SHINee chose to sing -- that is why I think she was so still and quiet during their performance and didn't really look at them, because it was super emotional for all of them and she didn't want to cause herself or any of SHINee members to break down if they made eye contact. IU (pronounced I.U., which is a stage name that means You and I combined together to make one through music -- her real name is Lee JiEun, but almost no one calls her by her real name) is the host of the show -- this is her talk show where she invites fellow idols and actors on the show to promote their latest work and to hang out, etc. She didn't sing with SHINee because the whole premise of this segment of the show is that they covered each other's songs. IU also did a cover of SHINee's song "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" in this same interview. But if you have never heard SHINee's version, check out the original version first, so you can understand just how unique and cool IU's remixed version was. Both covers are way different then their original versions. IU is a solo Kpop artist who debuted 4 months after SHINee, who is known as "the nation's little sister." She is known for her amazing vocal range and for her cute bubbly personality. She is also one of Korea's top actresses -- she has even acted in a drama with Minho, who is also a top male actor. And she has had song collaborations with Key and Taemin when they were younger. In the show, IU actually mentioned how Onew was one of her favorite male voices and they talked about how they should do a collaboration together -- which I am sure would be heavenly. (Frankly, after 13 years I'm surprised that they haven't collaborated together already.) All of the SHINee members' voices are very unique. SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. Most fans (SHINee World or Shawol for short) will tell you we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed, with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Each of their voices are that unique -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop". The order you see the members of SHINee sitting in, is the order that they always sit or stand in since debut days. They will always stand with Onew on the left, Taemin next to him, (Jonghyun in the middle,) Minho next and Key on the right. Even their starting positions in their choreography will often have them standing in this order. You almost never see them in interviews or in press photos, not in that order. When SHINee debuted in 2008, Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14, so now they are all in their late 20s and early 30s. (Onew turned 31 last December.) SHINee are some of the most well respected artists in the industry. Onew (Pronounced Oh-New, real name Lee JinKi) is the leader of the group and he has one of the most unique and best voices in the industry. (Onew means, or sounds like, the Korean words for soft or gentle, so he was given his stage name because he has a very calm and gentle personality.) His vocals are unmatched. Key is our fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment, so Key is known for really paying attention to detail when it comes to fashion. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. He is an amazing singer and is a sub-rapper in the group. He is also known as SHINee's dance copy machine. Key has the ability to see and remember choreography the fastest in the group. He only needs to watch the dance once and he has it memorized. He is also SHINee's fluent English speaker, and he is almost as good as a native speaker. Minho is the main rapper and visual of the group, but his vocals are also some of the best in the industry. Minho sings just as much as he raps. He also writes most of his own raps in SHINee's songs. Minho is a top actor and he has starred in numerous dramas and movies. He is also known as a top athlete. He says these days he goes to the gym a couple of times a day to work out just because he likes to work out, but he is also crazy about soccer, and he plays basketball, baseball and golf, and he is good at track and field events, etc., as well. And not only does he enjoy playing all those sports, but he is usually the best athlete on the field and he pretty much wins every time. Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma," and one reason is for his intense passion for sports and his need to always win. Taemin is considered one of THE BEST dancers in the industry, and that's not just by fans but by everyone in the industry, including his peers. Taemin's nickname is the Korean Michael Jackson. He is also one of the most popular solo artists in Kpop and he is a member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM. Taemin truly is art when it comes to his performances. Although Jonghyun wasn't in this performance, in order to get to know SHINee, you have to get to know him as well. He is known as one of the best vocalist in Kpop who was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. Jonghyun wrote and composed almost 40% of SHINee's songs, plus he wrote all of his own solo songs and numerous songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy" and songs for Taemin, IU and Lee HI, etc. He was one of the only SM artists to be given complete artistic control over his work, including several of SHINee's song selections. SM knew that if Jonghyun was involved in any way that the song would be a hit. He was extremely respected within the industry as a songwriter, composer and singer. He was one of the very first Idols to be known for this songwriting and composing skills. As the main vocalist, Jonghyun is the reason why Taemin is the amazing singer and performer that he is today. Jonghyun taught Taemin everything he knows and you can feel Jonghyun's influence everytime Taemin sings, especially when he's performing with SHINee. You just discovered why SHINee still hold one of the top spots after more than 13 years in the industry. SHINee are part of the second generation of Kpop and yet they are younger than most everyone in their generation and are the same age or even younger than many members of groups who came after them, such as EXO and BTS, etc., which are part of Kpop's third generation. SHINee debuted young and have the experience of seasoned veterans. SHINee are known for their ballads and for their amazing harmonies, that is why they are so highly respected in the industry. Their live vocals are unmatched and everyone in the industry idolizes them for the amount of talent they have. Even as rookies they were highly respected by their seniors and peers for their live vocal abilities and the fact that they sound even better live then they do recorded. SHINee live are on a whole other level. They are some of the best vocalists in the industry. And just think, Minho is the main rapper of the group. How often do you see a rapper that can sing as well as him? Onew is also known for his ability to hold notes for a very long time. IU’s show Palette has different guests. She was not bored of their singing but enjoying every second of them. She commented she was surprised they sang it so beautifully as the song was written for a soloist. She loves Onew’s voice, he sang first and last, and told him she would love to sing with him. I’d love that too.

Thank you for doing reaction on SHINee's covering IU song. I've been listening to Korean songs for more than 20 years now and I know lots of Kpop idol group from 1st generation till now we're in 4th generation, but for me personally, SHINee is the best Kpop Idol group, they debuted in 2008 (2nd generation) and they're very experimental, all 5 members can sing well, can dance, have good visual, good in acting, great in composing songs and writing the lyrics/rap, good in fashion, in variety show, in sports, in cooking etc.. they're the one that start off with complex and difficult dance routine in Kpop and open so many new music genre in Kpop industry and yet they're very humble, and that's why not only juniors but their seniors also look up to this group. Maybe in future you can dive more into SHINee and you'll see how they're transforming from young boys (debut at age 14 -18) to be a very superb talented artists~ and one more thing~ their live performances especially in concert are spectacular~ they're just bad in lip sync, so they just sing live since debut~
