No polygamy doesn't equal to adultery. There's no verse in the bible where God condemn it. Anything outside marriage such as adultery that is what considered sexual immorality. In the bible there are some individuals that had multiple wives and God didn't stop bless them and neither did condemn them.

If they're into Christian apologetics then it's absolutely important to study other religions in order to understand what and why other people believe what they believe. It applies even within denominations. All the people I watch into apologetics are very knowledgeable not only in different religions but also different denominations within the Christian faith. You can't debate other religions with only the knowledge of what you already know. You have to have knowledge of what other people know too🤷🏾♀️
It wasn't God's plan for a man to be married to multiple women. He didn't tell Abraham or Solomon to marry multiple women. They just did that on their own. Not sure about David, but God definitely didn't tell Him to lust after Bathsheba and commit adultery. I know women didn't have any rights during that time, so maybe men felt obligated or thought they were doing women a favor, but that still doesn't mean God was ok with it. Now we have more rights though, so polygamy isn't necessary. Not to mention it's a sin since it's obviously adultery.

I think the multiple wives in the old testament had to do with building population and also taking care of the women. Marriage provided safety and security in ways that are not issues in today's world. That was at least a theory I heard and it made some sense. **Edit And Nick read something that pretty much said the same thing. The world was very different in OT days.
