Of course it gets a like, why shouldn’t it. Paul is the man! I was taught by a plumber recently that the plastic is great for the reason you used it (preventing adhesion) and also some tubs were showing staining through the fiberglass from the cement and they wouldn’t warranty them. My ocd makes me put a cleat on each side to prevent any possibility of the tub lifting and messing up my level line to start my tile while cement cures. Probably not necessary but it makes me sleep better knowing it’s as I left it. Hope all is well in your life and post up more often, you’ve been missed. Even though I do this for a living as well it’s enjoyable to watch someone else do their thing as we all can still learn something new.

@Paul, it helps to create channels or a grid that is slightly lower than the mortar bed finish elevation so that the high mortar has a place to move when settling the tub in place. Also, piece of chicken wire or expanded metal lath on the sub-floor prior to pacing the mortar bed prevents potential splitting or break-up.

Just started the video and have installed a tub before and I'm not sure if this what you will be doing but the tub that was in this house cracked because it was not supported underneath so we did a lot of research to find a solution. We bought bags of cement and heavy duty construction garbage bags, we mixed the cement and put it in the garbage bags and leveled the tub on it before it set up. We have a very secure and heavy duty underlayment now to our tub. Yay we did it right lol

Mortar bed is very good. You could reinforce it with rebar, use gravel, not plastering sand so it will not crack, add some timber around it may be as well. I'm using cement board in thew bathrooms instead of any kind of drywall.
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 3 года назад
Hi John, I do not use drywall in showers where it will constantly be exposed to water. Drywall works fine for this application. Thanks for sharing buddy!

I'm happy to see you made it through the hurricanes OK. We got hit with 2 of them but survived. I'm glad you mentioned electrical. Sometimes people do stupid things with the wiring and even when the switch is off, there is still a hot wire going to it- my best friend nearly died that way. He was changing a light fixture in his grandfather's house & even though the power was off at the switch, it still had a hot wire that zapped him so badly he lost feeling in his right hand and in both feet. He was unable to feel pressure in his feet & couldn't drive for years. Sensitivity eventually returned enough for him to drive but he still can't feel how much pressure he's exerting with his right hand. We're going to be installing a bath tub in my house sometime in the (hopefully) near future. Trying to keep budget under $5k but already spent close to $1k on the fixtures. Got the lavatory, toilet (re-used from another room where we upgraded to an ADA height toilet), mirror, old medicine cabinet, vanity light, heat/vent/light for ceiling, tub & wallset, etc. I will be shutting off my main water supply when I do continue demo in my old bathroom. What do you recommend putting on plywood floor underneath a tub? Would another sheet of plastic or plastic bag work? Or maybe landscaping material stapled down?
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 3 года назад
So sorry to hear you got hit with 2 hurricanes!! One is more than I care to deal with, I hope it wasn’t too bad around you. If I were you I would use visqueen, it will make a good barrier to keep the mortar from sticking. You can always put another bag underneath and on top or you can mix it up in the bag and just set the bag down if it is big enough. One of my viewers gave that tip, I found it to be pretty good! Thanks!
@mycats7321
@mycats7321 3 года назад
@@paulstoolbox Thanks, we had minimal damage from the hurricanes but house got invaded by raccoons while we were evacuated. They ransacked the place. Back door is still busted so they keep coming in at night. They are bigger than my dogs. My dogs try to chase them, but the raccoons stand on their hind legs and try to stare them down. I walked into the kitchen to see that happening. I envisioned a Far Side style cartoon with one holding a switchblade & another standing with its hands on it's hips facing off against the little dog. But, at least our house is standing. Lots of people in my area lost their homes to fallen trees & wind in the first one and then 2nd one did major flooding. Some were just rebuilding & then got flooded. We're on high ground so we were lucky. Kitchen floor was ruined by fridge & freezer defrosting & ice bags melting, but everyone was OK and that's what's important. I have a new back door put in but need to raise the header & level it (it drops 1" from one side to the other) & replace the rotten sill. Visqueen sounds like a good idea. I think I have some down in the workshop. I believe Sterling/Kohler recommended a 1" to 2" mortar bed under the tub. Any tips on mixing it? I keep seeing different opinions. Some say very wet, some say barely wet & I'm not sure what works best.

The best trick in the world for installing tubs is FOAM. Set the tub, fill it about half way with water, then foam it with regular foam. Not high expansion. Should take 1-2 cans. Come back the next day, release the water, and when you step in that tub it will feel solid as a rock. Like stepping on concrete.

Great job. I had a plastic tub i installed about 15 years ago. It had a honeycomb bottom they say was for reinforcement, no concrete needed. I listened and got screwed when they call me back one month later with a hairline crack down the middle. I put a steel tub in and concrete. Never got called back ever.

You don't need to use concrete to set the tub . Gypcrete is much lighter and supports the tub just as well. If you staple roofing felt paper on the floor first then staple some chicken wire on top of that it will never move or shift.

I heard you can use spray foam instead if cement. Is that true?
@paulstoolbox
@paulstoolbox 3 года назад
Hi David, I’ve heard of people doing different things like using expansion foam or silicone but I personally would not try that. I’m not positive but I think expansion foam will give under a heavy load. 30 gallons of water plus a 200 lb person can put over 450 lbs of weight . on the tub and sub floor, if the foam gives or fails, the weight is now transferred to the top lip of the tub that is sitting on the 2x4 frame. This could cause squeaking noises when moving in the tub and could eventually crack the tub. This is just my opinion but I hope it helps. Thanks!
