“This BMW M4 feels more like a car for social media than for solitary driving” is the most 2021-auto-industry thing I’ve ever heard. Says a lot about the current state of the new car market. Ever since the new M3/M4 came out, I’ve been trying to ask myself, “what does the grille say in a broader sense about where the auto industry is these days?” I think Todd just answered that question brilliantly.
They purposely made it ugly to get attention kind of like how clickbait works now. Producers either car or media just want attention whether it’s negative attention or good
If they liked the Mach 1 with the auto, they'd have fallen head over heels with the Tremec in it. It totally changes the feel of the car to a better level.
100% agree. Plus when you actually think about buying these cars, in this configuration, the Mustang is $40k cheaper. Considering they both give you a phenomenal driving experience, I'd save the money and go for the car that's more fun to drive and look at.
The inflation sticker shock gets pretty real when you realize that you could have purchased a GT350 in 2019 or 2020 for the same price they're now asking for a Mach 1 in 2021.
Mach 1 looks like every other mustang on the road. M4 looks new and it shits on the mustang in every single perfromace metric u can do. While having an actual luxury interior and better tech. No brainer
That's why on a test ride that I realized the BMW M240i was the best drivers car imaginable imo! Not to mention extremely fast 4.2 seconds or better to 60 mph! I also did a test ride in the S3 and S4, and neither were even close to the Beemer! The Miata leaves a lot to be desired from a performance standpoint, but it's a fun little car from what I hear! My point was try a proper BMW and like myself you will be blown away with an M2 competition, M240i, and I'm sure other M cars! Don't give up on the Germans just the brand Audi lol!✌
@@whata86 Not to much the 2 series in general is considered reliable! The B58 engine in particular is the best inline turbo 6 BMW ever created according to the experts! It's under warranty for a long time still, so not overly concerned at this point! I have 14k on it already, and I don't baby it with no troubles so far. I pray it stays reliable because the car is incredible to drive, and extremely fast!✌
Thanks for a very informative video. I'm Mustang all the way. I was a teenager when the first Mustang was introduced at the World Fair. I've loved the Mustang since then. My first new car and daily driver for 12 years was a Mustang. Now my retirement car is a Ruby Red Mustang. It's just fun to drive.
@@klasseact6663 God. Perfect question. I don't know! I wish the C8 rear was better, but the front of the M4 is so bad that I wonder how it ever went into production. So, I'll go M4.
You guys are forgetting a Loaded GT can cost $56k. The Mach 1 actually isn't all that much more when you compare them equally in terms of options. Remember the Mach 1 premium comes loaded. And then you get all those extra's with the Mach 1, like different suspension, wheels, tires, better exhaust, nicer looking rear and front fascia, the Tremec, etc. It's too bad you didn't get the Handling Package car. That's the one to buy and it looks awesome.
Considering the difference in price between the The beaver and the horse, you really should’ve chosen a GT 500 as a comparison car. At that point they would be the same price and yet it’s still basically below the skin a horse.
Saw a white one yesterday in Leesburg Georgia. It’s beautiful. I’m currently in the market for a Jeep but I may hold another year or two. It’s that good
yes, but they did one stupid move,, they killed of the fusion..i have a 2014 fusion 2.0 ecoboost engine ( the better spanjsh engine ) se w/lux package and 235/45/19 wheels and tires..ans some othere mods..and i can roast most 3 tpes on the roads with it..hy1 between sasulito and stinson beach.. one was in front of me,, and pulled away..so he wants to play????? so i stuff mine into sports mode.. now only using paddle shift.. and after a few miles.. he gave up and pulled to a turnout.. and started chasing me.. after a few corners,, he started to fall behind....never got above 3rd gear. paddle shift...6 speed auto... my g/f told me when we stopped at stinson beach.. that see saw 2 or 3 orange warning light flikker on and off.. i asked her to show me the location of the orange lights... they were my traction/ stability control and my abs lamps.. was pushing my car pretty hard to make those show up..dont know about the bmw driver..i looked around for the car. after we parked..did not find it
Well don't get your hopes up the Ford Bronco is a mess, just look under the hood and decide for yourself. I was excited but after seeing one for myself, dissapointment is an understatement.
@@wrighterjfly - disappointing in what way? The best looking car that has come out in the last 10 yrs. What’s under the hood that’s a mess?? That Ecoboost engine is great. All I’m hearing is I’m a fanboy of another manufacturer and am hating on Ford and the bronco for no reason.
@@johnnymula2305 Oh nice!, If I could go back in time, e9 would be on my top 5 list to buy. I currently own an e30m3 and a 190e 2.3-16 euro specs. I once had a w124 500e, but regrettably sold it...ugh.
That BMW grill is a nightmare as soon as it’s in view causes a literal shake of my head. Trying to clear my eyes, I guess. Also BMW give us steering feel, please! So the ‘Stang has to be my choice.
It is absolutely hideous. I recently went to my local BMW dealer to keep my wife company while her vehicle was getting serviced. One of the salesmen attempted to get me trade my 2020 Mustang GT for one of their BMW's with that horrible front end design. I told him that not only would I never trade for any of those but they would have to literally give me one of those monstrosities for free and then would still owe me at least a couple of grand for all the pain and suffering from having to look at that design mistake every day. Sheesh.
Two of my favorite cars, I’m going to end up with one of them next year in 2022; it’s looking like Mach 1 Premium with Handling & Elite package, no back seats (TREMEC of course)
I gotta go with the m4, the great driving dynamics accompanied with that glorious v8 of the mustang is tempting but that interior isn’t something I can forgive. The m4 is just a more complete car, checks every box and still offers the 6mt. Never cared what others said about the beaver front, I don’t mind it. Actually kinda like it.
0:50 "Was one of these manufacturers looking at the other one?" Well... have you seen the 8 Series coupe? BMW's definitely been looking at the Mustang.
I may be the only person to feel this way but I love the g80/g82 front end. I hated it at first much like I hated the 2018+ mustang front end but like the mustang the bmw has really grown on me, to the point that I much prefer the “beaver” front end over all other cars right now. I currently own a 2020 401a, 6 speed mustang with the performance pack and adaptive suspension and it’s great…. But I would love to have a g80 M3 manual in IOMG!
First time I saw the M4 front end I laughed and puked a little at the same time. Not sure when but over time and the more I saw it, the cooler it looked to me. It's pretty in your face but it has some nice lines. I think on a darker colored car it would be pretty nice. Looks modern at least.
It’s good to see that I’m not the only one that thinks that front end on the M4 looks amazing! It reminds me of the nostrils of a thoroughbred racing horse
Both are brilliant cars, each with their plusses and minuses. The M4 has more class and a much nicer interior (the mustang's interior has a bit of a cheap look to me). I actually like that front end. It has significantly grown on me and looks very nice in reality. On the other hand, that mustang V8 sound just can't be beat. The mustang also oozes that raw muscle car spirit. It looks like it's going fast, even when parked. If I had to pick one I'd probably pick the M4. If I had enough money I think I would save myself the trouble of choosing and just buy both. Great job, Ford and BMW.
For a 40K extra over the Mustang, I'd expect the interior to be a lot nicer. Nobody seems to be talking about the cost difference here. For 100k one could have the Mach 1 and a nice medium size SUV to drive when the weather sucks or you want to haul the family to the beach for the weekend.
Air cooled Porsche pilot from days past. My 912 Targa was sublime. I knew were the tires were at all times, it was light, and the wail of that flat four. And then I found motorcycles. I'm all better now.
Wow! Your production quality and filming locations are absolutely amazing! Can't get over the beaver, and for that price, I'll stick with the Mustang (can almost get 2 for the price of 1 [ugly] M4)
I am BMW fan, but I would take that Mach 1. Saw it in real, it is gorgeous. And that engine sounds as beautiful. Just great car. Not to mention, BMW costs some 40K more.I could buy Tesla Model 3 for that money. As my second car. ;-)
Since I first heard you say "the beaver teeth", I simply can't look at a BMW and not die laughing! Best definition to a design feature EVER! By the way, thanks for another excellent video, guys!
@@EverydayDriverwhy are the new m3 and m4 selling triple the amount of cars then the old m3 and m4. Check bmw sales stats. Looks like ur opinion is just that. An opinion
Why did they give the M4 an SUV front/grille? Rest of it looks SWEET! BMW is probably a better car, at least for the first 20,000 miles but I bet the Mustang is more fun.
I am a BMW fan. I'm also a Mustang fan. A year ago I opted for the mustang over the BMW based on a lot of the points you both bring up. Instead of going Shelby though I chose a GT and am modifying it to my wants and needs. Plus that way I save on insurance too. It was more important to me to take that money and spend it wisely that too pay for the Shelby name and an insurance hike. And boy is it fun to drive!
I'd be happy as heck with this Mach 1! Yes, it does lack some of the amenities of the M4 but is 40K less. No, I wouldn't be settling, I'd be reliving my youth when I had a '72 Mach 1.
Agree, it looks fine in dark colors. However as with everything conservative people don't like change, but give them a few years and they want the current, hate the present and hate the future :)
Nice review of two great cars! The only thing that would have made it better is if you both ended the video crawling into those oversized doors that BMW calls a grill.
Great review, I agree with the judgement on the Beemer's weirdly shaped radiator grille. If I were going to spend $60K on a pony car it would be the GT 350. The automatic on the Mach 1 is sacrilegious.
"I dont think there is a person or thing out there that hides its weight better then this car " . Me wearing black all the time : "Am i a joke to you ??"
@Karol Szymon Wiśniewski I watched this test. Something was wrong with that car running 13s. I’ve hit mid 12s on the street in my 10 speed mustang gt stock (and they can kiss 11s on a prepped surface)
I bought my first mustang GT at 15 years old. Watched in horror back in 94 as the Fox body and 5.0 got replaced with a sohc 4.6….Then I saw a glimmer of hope with the 03-04 “terminator” cobra, was excited in 2011 about the coyote 5.0L and am thrilled at where the Mustangs are now. Well done Ford!
The build quality and engineering on the bmw is above and beyond the mustang. Any 15 year old Ford has the clear coat peeling off, crap paint jobs. I am a Ford F-150 owner
The specs on paper add up but in the real world the M4 is much much quicker (expected given the price difference), the S58 is an insane tuning platform
By "Much quicker" do you mean .2 seconds in the quarter mile from a 30 roll quicker. Also has less braking power, less lateral Gs and ugly as hell. For a 20-30k difference this isn't even close as to which is better.
@@predatorshelby5780 The difference in speed is night and day. The DCT runs easy 11's all day with the xDrive versions recording low 11's which the Mustang doesn't come close to (with much lower trap speeds). And an ///M car isn't intended to be a value car like a Mustang - its a BMW so it is going to be pricier but you're getting BMW's build quality not Ford's. Sure the Mustang looks much better and is better value but its not the better performing car, its not even close.
Todd's comment about another one's spouse was hilarious and spot on. Even if the video and the cars were not so good, that comment alone would get a thumbs up.
Although the GT350 engine brings it's own unique excitement; It would've been interesting to see how much specialness and fun could've been regained in other areas if the track pack spec+the manual with speed shifting were to be tested. Also, does the the earlier torque delivery of the Mach 1allow you to short shift so you have more fun opportunity to row through the gears on backroads vs GT350? Thx!
@@klasseact6663 it amazing how the squeaky wheel always get the attention! Absolutely zero problems with the engine, burns zero oil and I take it as a point of pride to beat the snot out of her every single time I drive her! It is too bad that the absolute minority of owners actually "know" this guy with engine problems, lemon by backs, ect. It's like a damn Bigfoot sighting! Bottom line is that it is completely disingenuous to brand a motor as garbage when this motor/transmission combo is what makes this car so damn special. Allow the engine to get to operating temperature, until then, keep the revs low. After that, use the entire RPM range and go full send every chance you can. Don't baby it... drive the damn car and you will always get that smiles per miles we all brag about. 2 bus loads of people complaining about their blown engine experience pales in comparison to the area full of people that can't say enough on how great this car is.
@@curaco678 I am basing my opinion on 2 friends who are experienced track guys know how to take care of the car know how to drive. I agree with you 100% that the engine is what makes the car great and it is far superior to the other products but unfortunately due to the size of the engine the flat plane crank has bad if plain crank has bad vibration problems.
I actually love the Kidney XL grills. Even I know people will think they are ugly. Maybe they will age well Maybe I can look forward to a super cheap used one :)
I can’t believe the day has come where a factory stock mustang is being compared to the almighty BMW M4, is still $40,000 cheaper, competes well on every level and is actually more of a drivers car???? What is this alternate universe I’ve entered in!!??
You are right that the Mustang isn't a car that one buys for fuel economy but I have to say, I drove a 2016 GT convertible with MT for four years and was able to make several multi day road trips with it and I have to say, I was very pleased with the fuel economy I got out of that car. It was EPA'd at 25 mpg highway but I averaged between 27 and 27.5 mpg on the road. Not bad at all for a V8 powered car.
Great video guys! I am in the minority in that I like the looks of the new M4. The old grille looks too small and very dated now, especially when Audis and Mercedes have large grilles as well. I’m surprised that neither of you really harped on how bad the automatic transmission is in the BMW when compared to the previous dual clutch manual transmissions. So much less racy of an experience, I like the hard shifting of dual clutch manual transmissions.
A friend bought a BMW M5, 3 year warranty and it was almost $150,000.00 out the door. Warrant ran out after 3 years started to cost money and he got a $63,500.00 trade-in, he said its only money
When you actually load up a regular GT Premium Mustang with Magna Ride and all the goodies, you're approaching $60k, but are stuck with the less than desirable Getrag 6-speed (if you want a manual instead of the pretty good 10-speed auto). For a few extra thousand dollars, buying the Mach 1 and getting the Tremec 6-speed (and all the other GT-350/GT-500 goodies) is an absolute no brainer.
Really enjoyable episode, guys! Hopefully you'll get the issues with Amazon sorted out so we can buy the entire season (since I no longer have a cable or satellite subscription to watch these when they first air).
Guys, 40 grand difference in price and that makes the Mustang the winner by a county mile. Yes it is not as good as the M4 but for what Ford produces at that price you've got to declare the Ford as the winner.
That makes it better value. Not the winner. Use a dictionary and understand the meaning of words. Winning is when you beat it in majority of the categories. And these American cars have shitty quality n worse reliability them even the Germans. I'm not even talking about the expensive ford's but even the cheap ones. But for VALUE yes the Mustang is hard to beat. If the BMW is the latest iPhone then the mustang is a redmi phone
@@vise5224 Ford could have - easily - built a BMW beater but chose to stick to a price point to appeal to the wider cross section of buyer.. It is a winner. It costs BMW so much to produce a car which Ford could match with a much lower price. Shit quality may be what your county produces. Most cop cars are Ford. If they were unreliable then they would not have been purchased.
You’d be surprised… we always are… there are comments on every video that say “first thing I’ve ever seen from you guys…”. Lots of people out there that don’t seem to know who we are or the range of what we do. Thank you very much for knowing and being with us!
The Mach 1 is pretty cool, but, as mentioned in the video, it costs almost the same as the gt350 did. And it’s not nearly as cool, so would be hard for me personally to buy it knowing that.
I have a feeling Todd would have preferred an M2 Competition over the M4 - maybe still not over the Mustang, but above the M4, based on his comments. And it's a better comparison because the cost is the same - you couldn't spend $100k on an M2c (when they were still available). It's a smaller, more visceral, less luxurious version of the M4, and it all works so well at a much easier to swallow price.
Lexus RCF may be another alternative. I'd prefer the BMW in the M3 sedan format myself as a family man. North American buyers have more options with the Cadillac Blackwings for manual transmissions. Great content guys. Ultimately, a Kia Stinger GT was my personal choice for what my budget would allow.
Paul, you must be ecstatic now with Ford leaving heritage behind a little bit and creating the Dark Horse for the MY2024. That twin throttle bodies gen4 Coyote putting 500bhp is gonna be a legendary motor.
As much as I understand the "value" proposition of the Mustang, surely it wouldn't be too much to ask for them to take some stick-on leather or vinyl to dress up the interior just a bit. A few more pieces of aluminum trim wouldn't go unnoticed.
2:09 if you pop out some rivets from the radiator cover you pop it off and then pop out the left side “fog” light cover it is an air intake. It’s basically a factory ram air giving you a few extra horsepower.
Todd said he chose the Mustang because he found it more engaging, well Todd spoiler alert you'd be infinitely happier with the Mach1 with the manual transmission, the Tremec manual is such a great transmission. It's a shame you guys never tested the Mach One with a proper manual transmission. Mach1 looks soo much better, can't get over those BMW buck teeth.
I don't think you guys got this right. Mustang Mach 1 comes with the option of having a manual transmission. Furthermore, it's not the shitty MT-82 but rather the Tremec unit out of GT350..
We are well aware of the Tremec, and wanted it for this review. Unfortunately, the car Ford had available for our filming was the 10 speed auto. Thanks for watching!
Back in 2003 when I bought my Mach 1 the M4 was our stiffest competition needless to say they could not hang with the Mach 1 on the dragway. On the street from a roll the M 4’s we’re tough to hang with.
