Today we look at the throwing action of MGV Michael Van Gerwen.
One of the greatest dart players to ever grace the oche MVG is a 3x PDC World champion and has wan every event on the PDC calendar to date at least once.
Michael van Gerwen has an incredibly simple throw that's not to hard to replicate.
My channel is exclusive to darts only content. I create my content as I simply love to play darts and want to help other dart players improve with my own channel.
All my video's are based on how to play darts as well as advise on equipment and general darts setup with the aim to guide any new players in their darting journey as well as provide more experienced or even professional dart players with dart content to help improve.
I throw around an 80 average myself with my left hand due to in injury and dartitis in my right arm.
I may on occasion use footage from the Professional darts corporation (the P.D.C) as well as The British Darts organisation (The B.D.O). These are used under fair use legislation and all credit should be given the rightful creators.

Note how he walks up to the line with all 3 darts in his left hand. As opposed to walking up with 1 dart in your throwing hand. That way, the motion of grabbing a dart & bringing it up to shoot is the same for all 3 darts instead of only the second & third

Hard to believe he wan one of the biggest tournaments in the world when he was 17yrs old (The World Masters) back in 2006.

I absolutely love a few of the parts you have that I haven't seen elsewhere. The dead on look at his eye, basically, the precise location of where he is standing...and why, along with how intact his non throwing arm stays tight to his body. That slow motion dart was so pretty as well. Well done, mate.

Thank you for another great video. I love your channel as I enjoy seeing darts and matches but, personally, I really enjoy the technical breakdowns. As a result of watching thousands of videos I have adjusted my stance, my grip, my trajectory, my flights, my stems, my barrels, my practice routines, and so much more! Did I mention I am still awful? Oh, there's that too. I'm kidding! To anyone learning, I have been playing for 8 months and am consistently disappointed by many of my throws, then (and here is THE KEY), I think back 6 months or 4 months and realize that I truly am a better thrower than I was. I have done the math. If I practice every day (and here is the challenge) and live to be 175 I am going to kick the ass of every guy at my local pub! Keep throwing, Brothers and Sisters!

I’m convinced MVG is going to have back problems later in life, but damn is he good. I tried throwing like him a few rounds and was exhausted in the end. But MVG has the most deliberate follow through in the game - his hand looks like rubber. Thanks for posting these videos - I’m learning a lot!

Would love to see an update on this video. I feel like most of MVG’s bad form right now is due to changes in his technique. Especially the grip. Good vid mate 🎯

Your right, his alignment is off and his elbow is used was to much.
@stumetallicafan

His dart nowadays points very far down on the draw back where as before the dart was pointing up . The angle is quite significant . Is this a result of the injury that required surgery perhaps ?
@Straightdarts
@Straightdarts 26 дней назад
@@stumetallicafan He used to do that when he was 16 years old. Watch his game against Martin Adams in the international darts league back in 2006. :)
@anthony8bpgaming689
@anthony8bpgaming689 20 дней назад
@@stumetallicafandeffo a possibility about the surgery. His dart is pointing way down to the ground when he throws, which must be causing the wrist/elbow to react more to propel the dart. It could only make him more injury prone and cause for more stray darts when he’s playing. I definitely feel that if he made some positive technical changes in his game he could get back to the top of the game again. Still plenty of years for him.

I think with the way he leans and the speed he throws he will have a hard time maintaining accuracy as he grows older. Unless he changes .

is it bad to point the dart at a downward angle? i see people saying that in the comments but I feel more comfortable throwing that way, my throw is similar to the recent mvg and they say that's why he dipped in form, although he is picking up again now.
@Straightdarts

Nothing wrong with it at all, your most probably tiling the point up as you draw back. :)

Thank you for this basic but very important video I'm very new to darts and before I learn natural throw/mechanical throw, I'm learning from Phil Taylor & MVG throw. MvG leans from Oche & is little tilted to left.. and what he aims from.. from your photo, it seems, he is aiming from 1 of the right part of wing stem..? He has height advantage so his dart is not tilted up? Whereas, Phil Taylor dart is tilted up & he takes time to aim.. Between both, I'm confused.. 1. Do these legends, especially MVG, he does not aim.. he locks target way b4 he totally opens hand, in split second, doubly locks, pulls back & wham.. he throws.. a natural/ mechanical action.. Phil Taylor.. he set up aim, pull back & few centimetres from set up aim, he throws? Both are accurate.. Than.. yesterday night, I saw a vdo of dynamic Dave, he said.. just look at Target.. aim and throw.. his pull back is from cheek... And, in confused, without looking at darts v or tip.. how people can throw correctly? And today, I saw this MvG.. throw.. I wanted to understand, how he lock aim & his release point.. because it's too fast... Sorry, I'm confused because before I attain natural throw, I want to be very cautious about.. Locking target Aim Pull back Release For some, u aim, pull back, release And others..it's not darts but landing spot???? If you or anyone in comments can help, I'd be grateful

Taylor and MVG have very different throws. But they do have some things in common. 1. They both walk in to the shot looking at the target. 2. They both stand very central on the oche although MVG is slight over to the left. 3. They both grip the dart lightly. 4. They both follow through all the way. But Taylor would alway throw the dart with alot if Power in the front and middle of the barrel at release. Thus ment his darts would travel flat and land sightly downward. MVG pushes the point up further on release and the back of the barrel down. As demonstrated in this video its causes the darts to kick when in flight and land upward. MVG is a rythem player so he will typically aim the first dart and let the others fly. Taylor always aimed every dart although he has a rythem as well. This video has some grate advice from Taylor himself in it for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7lhWmPShw2U.html I'm a darts coach who works with one of the best players in the world, some semi professionals and amateurs alike. I know Dynamite daves work and he teaches a style that works for some players but everyone is different and I disagree with some of his work. His coaching on aiming and eye dominance are one of these factors. So I can only tell you that every good player I have ever worked with aims the dart and under pressure when you need that little bit more accuracy you will aim more, it's human nature.

They definitely aim on target. You should also know, that something like muscle memory exists and after years of training, you will be able to aim without much concentration. It will become natural. Your hands and eyes and standing and everything about throw will become automated and natural, so you will not think about it anymore.

I'm learning as well what is the difference with mechanical and natural throw?
@tintinfromindia2103
@tintinfromindia2103 2 года назад
@@Jack51161 hi, good morning from my part of world.. At later point or stage.. everything .. right from your walk towards oche & follow-up action, both words 'mechanical' or 'natural' throw becomes one & the same because a dartist has, over a period of time has attained muscle memory unique to its own personality.. And yet.. initially.. At very 1st stage.. a natural throw is what a beginner is naturally throwing a dart.. some are born with it to throw well and majority are not Mechanical throw is.. how a beginner grips a dart, how he or she holds it, finger grips, the weight of body on dominant feet & 2nd feet for balance, the way he or she aims, how, what, why's.. the body position & raising , pullback, release.. follow-up action.. all these actions become mechanical through enough practice that he or she seldom goes wrong by grip, throw, followup action.. Later.. both mechanical (muscle memory) & natural action converge.. but, imo, at beginning.. 95% is physical basics & 5% mental & after becoming really good ... 95% is mental & 5% is physical.. MvG, Taylor or anyone else... their physical aspects of throw become second nature & when they continue to practice & excell .. they , despite their age going up, body/mind changing.. they keep up with utmost levels to be in that stage.. Sorry, my way of explaining is somewhat awry but this is what I feel that at professional level natural/mechanical becomes one with target but to attain that.. both start with basics which should be practiced with utmost tenacity to to up the ante

Not sure if you've noticed, but MvGs throw has changed slightly. He started off having the dart pointing up as he drew back, then he had it pointing straight, and now, he has it pointing slightly down. He also used to draw it back to his lip iirc.

1:05 ~ i got stuck on this for a while with him. i've wasted a ton of time trying to figure out his throw. i can confidently say he does NOT hold the dart like this in play. i am convinced they took this shot of him and he held it this way for the advertisement. he does not level the needle with his fourth finger. edit: 1 example here. 4:45 at this link -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ub32DUsGnzc.html&ab_channel=RobbieKnox you can clearly see his fourth finger in the air

@@Straightdarts i've borderline obsessively been stalking . . err analyzing his throw since i got into darts a few years ago haha. it hasn't changed too too much since the start. the biggest change was him dropping the pinky. currently imo due to him losing so much, he isn't used to that, he has begun to tweak things. his go to form for the last few years, he was drawing it back down to the middle right of his lips where the two meet as you can see in your video here. lately he has raised it up an inch or so now above the right side of his lips.
