I love your devotion to improving. There is a lot that goes into becoming a pro tennis player. However, if we simplify it to the most basic level, the first hurdle is if one has a "big" enough game to be a pro. Building a "big" enough game around the serve and forehand seems to be the typical combination. Dominic Thiem said while he was growing up he was taught to hit the ball as hard as he could even is it resulted in mistakes because he knew eventually he would be able to harness the power and be consistent at the same time. One has a better chance at becoming a pro if they clear the "big" enough game hurdle first then add to it with speed, fitness, consistency, tactics, competitive attitude, etc. It's good to see you are using data on your serve speed to gauge your progress. If you can get to 193km (120 MPH) on 1st serve then you will have a pro level serve. Play as "big" as possible. That's how you will get to next level. Most guys that are really good but can't quite make it to the pro level just didn't have a big enough game.
@karmaQT
@karmaQT 2 года назад
i often get asked how i serve so big at my club with my skinny build, like you said, I just practised serving at 110% all the time until I could harness it. The others just serve at 75%.

You need to have your body weight going towards your target. You're falling to the left after every single serve. So on the add side, all your energy isn't going towards your target. It's called your power line. If you want to maximize your serve speed you want all of your energy, power line, going towards your target. So on the add side you need to fall to your right and not your left. This will help you also hitting your flat out wide target more easily and also keep you from missing in the net. Hope this helps and good luck on tour bro

Hey, always love your videos. I don't want to put a massive dampener on it, but those tests are far far too small sample sizes to say whether there has been a significant change in your serve in the week (spoken as a maths teacher!). The bigger the sample size, the more you can actually tell if there's been a change and 3 is just not even close to enough. You need to run a statistical hypothesis test to see if it is actually significant, and I think those changes are just far too small to say anything. Similarly, the 6/10 to the 8/10, is not statistically significant. Having said all that, you continue to do amazing work to improve and it's always great to watch. :)
@tennisbrothers
@tennisbrothers 2 года назад
Haha thanks , I did maths a level so knew going into it that it wasn’t super accurate , but to be honest I think that could have got a little boring and would have been super long to like setup, but appreciate the comment 👏🏼

@@tennisbrothers I agree with Mark about statistical relevance, but you are spot on about keeping the videos entertaining. The videos are just a peek into a long process, not research for a scientific journal. Being able to pull data on your serve should be helpful over the long haul, so I hope you keep up the analytics. I'd take some readings every week or two and look for long term trends. It should help you grow, and if there is a drop, it should help identify any issues that may have popped up in your mechanics. The accuracy test might be better at 50-100 serves per session.

3:40 One of the most surprising observations to me was that out of a session with ball machines and serves, the serves got my heartbeat up much more than groundstrokes, even though I am running around more for the latter (I actually measured my heartrate). I guess the serve engages the entire body much much more than other strokes.
@aaronrussell5047
@aaronrussell5047 2 года назад
Yes, I'm always surpised how tiring a session of practicing serves is. If you're serving with all your might, you've got just about every major muscle group exploding into the ball, so it does make sense. Still, it's not intiutive, since you're not running around. We're probably not hitting the groundstrokes with everything we have like we do a serve.
@tennisteuton
@tennisteuton 2 года назад
@@aaronrussell5047 I think the forehand and backhand are not as complex as the serve and don't involve as many muscle groups. Though play against Nadal - or Felix here - and you might just be as exhausted ;-) If you want the serve with movement, have someone or a ball machine feed you high balls for overheads in different directions. Seriously one of the most exhausting workouts ever.

Good improvement on the serve. In comparison using the same head app to measure serve my son maxes out at 150kph flat serve. He’s 12years old 5ft 8 in tall. I do take the head app with a grain of salt. Only use to see relative improvement.

You are incorrect. Vesely earned $400k in 2022 alone. He has almost $5.2M career earnings. Vesely is a former top 35 player. He beat 4 top 25 players last week in Dubai in reaching the finals of a ATP 500 level event after going through qualifying. The men's game is very deep. The difference between top 100 and top 25 is partly physical but mostly mental.

Awesome vid. My thought is your serve is too fluid meaning the leg drive and pop isn't dictating the racquet drop and that is why your not getting the speed (there is no pause with your motion like the pros). Also you could try more racquet cocking with the racquet to the right of the body which always produces more velocity (shelton and Roddick). Just a thought. Your awesome though!!!!

Just so you know the sensor is undercounting your serve speed by around 20mph (32 kph). You're already serving in the 120s (at least calibrated to standards of the sensors the pros use). You can do frame by frame counting from the point of contact to the point of landing (.4 seconds is 125mph, .5 is 100mph). Your serve are coming in around 24 fps out of 60 so that's around 125 mph. You can test it out by hitting the "," and "." key when watching any pro tournament on youtube if you want. You'll need to right click on youtube videos to verify the fps of videos (24,25,30,50,60) using stats for nerds. Most are 30 or 60 fps videos (this one is 60 fps).
