MY AUDI R8'S ENGINE IS BROKEN!! HOW BAD IS IT?? PT.2 

Absolutely buzz off how you manage to remain level headed and even calm, in the face of what would have other mere mortals bouncing an assortment of Snap On bits and bobs off every wall in the unit. Accompanied by every shade of see you next Tuesday I could think of. As always proper spanner work honest and realistic …..looking forward to this one big time.

actually..I think in terms of the channel this is the best thing that could have happened..imagine taking the engine out then popping the rocker covers off and the heads so you can show us what catastrophic failure looks like..bits of valve, bits of piston, chains.. it'll be awesome....

At this point I'd be spending more time crying that doing anything, you're patience is off the charts Dean!

Oil leak, leads to oil pressure drop, then timing tensioners drop pressure, chain comes loose, jumps a few teeth and 'pop' goes those 2 pistons, although weird if the timing was out, that it didn't do the whole bank. Enjoyable watch as always, Dean.

You are brave Dean - Fair play to you tackling this R8 ! When I see that car I'm reminded of a conversation I had with an R8 driver many years ago! I told him his car was beautiful and he said with a smile "Well I don't need it - Dont use it and definitely can't afford it and that's 3 very good reasons to have it" You working at this is an inspiration to everyone and not to be afraid of tackling an exotic !

That second cylinder you scoped and said "what's that...?" Looked very much to me like a valve sat sideways in the cylinder. Very suspicious carnage. Best of luck with it.

When you showed even the 1st spark plug it was fairly obvious it was fairly knacked. After the 2nd I winced then we saw the bore...ouch. hey at least you know what you are doing!! 😉

You need a magnet to put into the bore and see what it can pick up. Also please invest in a good borescope... I can recommend the Depstech DS450! Sure everything will become clearer once you take the head off but early diagnosis is helpful as well.

Love these videos. A bit odd for Audi to run the exhaust on top of the oil catch can. One leak and it's all over.

Very good detailed info for anyone stripping the rear of an Audi R8. Common sense approach as usual but you do like VW group pain. I got rid of my S3 as the water pump was on its way out and even Audi don't want 5 year old Audi's as trade in cars. I did have a few other issues with aircon condenser damage which is really easily damaged from stones at the front. Audi's out of warranty are money pits. I gave up fixing my own car at 30 but 20 years later still have fixed body damage, swapped doors and fitted / upgraded car options. Audi told me I couldn't have a reverse camera as it wasn't fitted from new well I did fit one and even local dealer said it looked OEM Audi. I used a used after market Skoda interface and Chinese ebay rear handle with camera along with VCDS and it took 2 hours to fit and program ion my driveway. VCDS also works on ID3, ID4 and Cupra Born cars.

You have the patience of a saint! 😇 Those spark plugs were mullered

Interesting... What could cause timing bits to fail? Lack of maintenance? What is cheaper, re-sleeving the 2 cylinders if possible or sourcing another block and 1 head?

These cars are not for the faint hearted Dean. The engine is totally “embedded” in the car, and a huge amount of ancillary kit has be be removed to get the engine out ! Looking forward to the motor tear down on this van one 👍😎

Well dean you have got ya hands full with this project speaking hypothetically mate a reborn and oversize pistons and rings cheaper than a engine don’t think they have wet liners but would be nice dean can’t wait to see the damage it’s caused could of been valve bounce and a chain go bang looking forward to the next video mate good content as per usual 👍

Looks like you've got some malice in the combustion palace. Don't worry though - I'm sure you'll find a perfect wrist pin / little end in the mix of gravel and Piston McNuggets in the bottom of the engine.

When you was explaining the finance the other day I thought sounds cheap but I would be terrified every time the car had a problem great vids though!

I've seen the middle fall out of plugs before when they've not been tight. And it dances around the cylinder smashing it to bits. I think that's what's happened here.

If this is a dry sump then surely the engine oil {pressure side} is fed from the resovoir and not the sump ??????? The sump should pump to the resovoir ,,, not into the crancshaft etc.... ???? Good luck Dean,,,following N hopefully i"ll have one of these one day .

Ooh, big job 😩 5 years back my Porsche 911 cracked a cylinder liner and of course wouldn’t run. Local specialist garage charged me £800 for engine strip down to diagnose problem when they simply could have used a camera and given me the same bad news at a far cheaper price….. 🙄 Best of luck, I’ll be watching closely with interest.

Can’t wait to see the metal carnage. I’ll be tuning in.

Dean…you need a big plaque on the wall given to you for Extreme Bravery and Determination! I know you are a mechanic but with so many cars in bits and a nightmare of stuff to take apart on the R8, how do you remember where and in what order it all goes back together??? Amazing…and fascinating but we look forward to seeing the engine in bits and to you pondering how you will warn your wallet about the cost of a new one…£££££££’s😬😱😱😱😱😱😱

Watched a few twin turbo builds on the R8 before and from what I remember you can drop the the whole engine, gear box and rear subframe out in one go. Would save you a bit of hassle maybe but I couldn't say for sure. Looks like its going to be an interesting series for sure, seems like the lost oil might have starved the tensioner on the driver side bank and like you said snapped a valve or two off. Sad way for such a sick car to die.

Great channel I used to do all work on my cars back in the day in a tiny garage changed engines clutches gearboxes It would seem impossible today to do the same without a lift.

Valve timing ! Do the valves miss the pistons when a belt goes south ?

You must be on the the green stuff to be so calm👍👍

Don't forget to check the crankshaft for hidden damage & oil pump damage, stiff to turn shaft etc.

R8 is a gorgeous car hearing them wow, this is certainly a challenge rebuilt and not cheap, things about Supercars their not for mere mortals, as for this if you got the R8 cheap due to the seized motor, and find a decent engine , then your off to the races, but it's certainly a project, I am looking forward to seeing what happens next .

Wonder if it got money shifted to 10,000 rpm and self destructed love the content

I'm guessing there was an oil pressure drop and the chain Tensioner backed off and lost the timing allowing the valves to bounce off the piston😬 I'll be surprised if this isn't a New Engine!! Look forward to maybe an engine strip down video!!

So no quick fix on this one then?!! Looks like a big project but all in a days work for you with your experience! and great content for us.

Have you checked the front bulkhead for cracking? known issue on early R8's that can basically total the car

pretty sure you drop the rear subframe engine and box in one go easier to get a good strang table lower it down undo everything then lift the car off using the car lift
