Because I was tagged in the post, my sister saw it and commented "Despicable!" When I saw her comment, I called her immediately to ask why she said that. She interpreted it as a racist post. Yeah it was immature on both their parts. People being locked inside their houses for the last two years has driven up depression and anxiety, exacerbated by the fact that social media was the only connection to the outside world for many. Her brother lives on the West Coast, so likely was very locked down due to COVID. If he didn't have a very strong friend group, easy to see how he would go down the social media rabbit hole and end up becoming very opinionated and disconnected from normal socialization.

People are never going to 100% jive with other people and people are ridiculously sensitive today. You know what I grew up listening to casual racism. I never liked it, but I had to live with it. Mostly the people involved would not think they were racist because they were not burning crosses or lynching people. I went off to college, met and became more comfortable with diverse people and understood how hurtful "jokes" really were. I just couldn't take the casual racism anymore and I just didn't feel like keeping quiet about it when I saw it anymore. Lost friends, lost family members, but it was worth it not to have to listen to any of it anymore.

That the brother called the BIL and the cousin a racist in one day does not mean it is not true (maybe cousin shared the meme of the caller's husband or commented additionally). Sometimes the casual covert racists exist in clusters in families ;) - I also noted the way she framed that he is now "at the Westcoast". - I disagree that facebook comments are not the "real world" People share ideas, and validate each others ideas etc. - and embolden each other. It is as real or unreal as if the husband had made a joke in person that the brother did not find appropriate. On facebook people have clear name - it may be a little esier than to call them out in person, but not much.

If you wanna ever learn more about why our food is the way it is Dr John I would highly reccomend "Everything I want to do is Illegal" by Joel Salatin. It brilliantly highlights the legislative roadblocks small farmers and local producers face today in America. Food and safety laws don't have a lot to actually do with safety anymore, it's more about making the process to get food from farm to table so expensive and arduous that small producers just can't afford the time or money to make it happen. It's all from lobbying made by Big AG.

@@christopherclifton2061 I would disagree with this a little bit. There are several different layers to racism and the interpersonal and intrapersonal levels usually have intentions within it. However, you can be passively unaware of racism in systems and institutions and continue those racist procedures, cultures, etc. and be COMPLETELY oblivious to it. For example, there are organizational networks in higher level management where a lot of the hiring is through social networks- for centuries now white men have been able to move up in build those social networks and wealth. These circles hire within themselves and they are not intentionally perpetuating racism but because people of color and women have only recently been allowed to climb the latter they are not yet in those social networks at the same rate as white men are. It’s systems as well that can continue racial disparities without people realizing it.
@Phantom8260
@Phantom8260 2 года назад
@@TS-fh4ii There are a ton of assumptions in your example that can be pretty easily dispelled by 2 facts that explain this phenomena of "white men" in higher level of management. 1) Men: Men on average tend to work more hours than women. This is largely due to the fact that more men are willing to either sacrifice their youth for gain in the long term OR that they need to provide for their family (wife + children). If you work more hours, you tend to have more time to devote to your craft and therefore garner a higher level of position and economic benefit. 2) White: The united states (as a fact) is still predominantly "white". The definition of white seems to expand or contract depending on who is using the statistic, but in general about 74% of the USA identify as "white". So if there is a higher percentage of people of a certain ethnic background, shouldn't by law of averages there be a higher amount of that group in the respective area? No hostility here, but just be careful about telling people an assumption without any evidence to back up these claims.

Interfaith relationships are very hard with Jehovah’s Witnesses. The JW religion is essentially a doomsday cult. They shun people who are baptized, but no longer practice the religion. They are also very stern on not celebrating holidays and birthdays. It is not an easy religion to grow up in or be married into as a non-believer. This caller is going to be separated from his wife and children for the rest of his life. It’s really sad honestly. Dr. Delony is simplifying the matter because he doesn’t understand what it means to be a JW. It is a cult. The wife will be trying to convert him the entire time during their marriage and eventually it will be the children trying to convert him. If his wife doesn’t stay in the religion, her mom will stop talking to her and I feel like that is one of the reasons why she is going back. This father needs to nip this conversion in the bud. I hope he can get his wife into therapy because JWs don’t really do therapy. I don’t know if he is religious, but showing his children an alternative religion would be the best thing for them.
