Hey guys, this is part 1 of a multi-part series by request from a lot of you. I apologize about the length but I tried to elaborate on a lot of the reasons why I choose a certain plug, what I look for when buying them, and the application in which they’ll be used.
The next few videos will cover Swimming type lures, Jigging lures, Rigging/Terminal Tackle, Rods/Reels/Bags/Belts and other General Equipment, and maybe a tips and tricks video.
This type of video is new to me, so if I suck at narrating I do apologize and will try to improve!

Okay I was watching you other video and have posted this question there but decided to post here too. Don't want to post on every single video of yours I watch lol. So the question is , when do you throw topwater plugs for stripe bass ? And when should you not throw top water plugs ? I guess my question would be same for heavy swimbait jigs. When and when not to throw swimbait jigs ? Thanks !

really informative video, thanks! Have you tried the new Canal B&T pencils? They're making a 7.5" 4 oz with a narrow neck.
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 5 лет назад
Owen Francis Yes, I have, and for the money they’re solid. The canal ripper stickbait is also a very well built lure with great action for the money. The one thing I tried to do differently with my pencils is instead of a gradual taper down towards the nose, I have the nose flare back out. This gives the pencil some body to plane up onto when working it in the tide, and really helps keep the plug flying straight due to the fact that the nose will want to track directly behind the tail during flight. Glad you enjoyed the video man, I know it was a little dull lol!

@DanEvan
@DanEvan Месяц назад
@@JCB517 yeah man I started building plugs about 12 years ago for no other reason than I was tired of inferior lures getting ripped to pieces by canal fish. Even through wired plugs having their cheap swivels torn out, or the tail wrap ripped through the side of the plug. Let me tell you it’s a futile fucking enterprise that very few people make money off of unless it’s your full time gig and without the right mentor it can drive you nuts haha. I’m terrified to even think about how much money I’ve spent testing so many different things from epoxy to paint to terminal tackle but the stuff I’m producing now I’d have no problem throwing at 400lb bluefin tuna. I’ve made lures for guys fishing for giant trevally in Australia and used 2.4mm 316 marine grade stainless wire, 5/0 1180lb Spro swivels, 400lb split rings, and a top coat of about 20 coats of automotive clear and 5-6 coats of epoxy and they’ve held up against the meanest fish on the planet no problem.

Wild Man So typically speaking, the faster reels with big line retrieve are the preferred reels used at the canal, but to say you “CANT” fish the canal with a VS and not be successful is a joke. Look at the cover of D.J. Muller’s book on fishing the canal, fishing a VS....Look at any video of Dave Anderson there, the editor of Surfcaster’s Journal....Fishing a VS....I have friends who are twice the fisherman I am who use VS reels because they trust them. They’re a tool to get a job done and they’re built accordingly.

Cape Cod 8 78 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SUXN3XENSXQ.html So it just so happens I know this rod extremely well. Kil Song, the Black Hole representative invited me to the demo day where these rods were still in the prototype phase last winter. The rod was originally rated 3-10 oz and I told Kil Song I thought that 2-8 oz was a much better representation of the rods capabilities and considering the Heavy Surf II is already rated 3-10 oz, that this was just creating overlap in the range. He picked up the phone to his manufacturer and made the change right then and there. I’ve attached a link to the video of me casting a 5 oz Al Gags (really weighs 6.5 oz). This rod is an outstanding all around canal rod to throw everything from pencils to heavy swimmers and to do some lighter jigging (3-4 oz or so). You won’t be disappointed with it!!

Way overpriced on all his lures. Sure he's old & not able to keep up W/demand due to exceptional quality/craftsmanship but unless the lure comes with a 60lb bass attached, it's price dont hold up in weight. Others have set the market and thus he followed suit.. Sure I understand but there's no justifiable reason from a consumer's perspective that I can see. Unless it's just art! Collect'em & put'em on the wall. No thanks. I'm here to catch fish not join the " work more 2 to pay 4 plugs club"

So I assume you’re referring to Mike’s lures…..the first ditch witch I ever bought was $25. When I made this video a ditch witch was priced at $32 and would be in stock for 2 months. The demand went up and the price has gradually gone up with it, and it still doesn’t stop the guy (who is 71) from making his best work to date, and it hasn’t stopped people from cleaning out the store in 2 minutes flat. Just don’t buy them lol. It’s rare I get one these days but I’m happy for Mike getting the credit he deserves. And people don’t realize Mike puts a ton of money back into fishing and conservation.
