Agreed! I have a left leaning family, and if I say something that's a conservative opinion, I get questioned by my family members and/or they think I'm a self-hating black woman! 🤦🏿‍♀️I just keep my mouth shut on politics!

This was good advice! It is hard right now...people are becoming do divided. It’s easy to get caught up in it. Let’s figure out what we have in common, and work from there.

Should teach this in school lol. But I feel for her. I like having mature conversations with people. Some people can’t set feelings aside. So it’s not worth it. It’s sad. But welcome to the 2020’s.

I agree and I feel her pain. I have family members who are left leaning and I don't think that way. Whenever I say my political opinions in front of them I get accused of terrible things (racism, sexism, ableism) even though I'm a black autistic/ADHD woman.

The person I disagree with probably the most is a person that is 15 years younger than me and hates texting. He's a geriatric millennial, but we're great friends. There is wisdom in John's words. Nuances make a huge difference.

Wow what an amazing answer. So true, be the bigger person, it’s not for other people. What they think of it won’t matter, being the bigger person helps you, it does something for you. It heals you. The other person may not believe you, but it’s just not about them!

Being born and raised in NYC I spent this year trying to understand others viewpoints and am so happy I did because I understand people better. Didn't change my vote ultimately but at least I can say Im not in a democratic mindset bubble anymore and can have constructive conversations with other people that think and look differently than me. 👍 Great advice John

Don't feel bad Miranda. I am 57 and I have 3 people that I cannot talk about Politics. Two of them are far left leaning compared to us and one is way far right of us and we could never be right enough for him. I have to sound rude to all of them to let them know I won't go there.

Sometimes you just can't talk to the other person. What degree do I give permission to these individuals to speak into our lives. It is a daily battle. Especially when everything is so politically correct, offensivel, or just cancel culture motivated.

I can kinda relate to her. I have a left leaning family who are total race baiters, and I honestly feel I relate more with most conservative views. I'll mention an opinion that's not liberal and my family members question me and accuse me of being (racist, sexist, and ableist) despite the fact that I'm a black autistic/ADHD woman! I feel like I'm an open-minded person, but I do not understand why anyone would want to elect a president that exhibits such horrible behavior. I will never understand it. I respect the fact that they can vote for it, but no one has been able to explain why they like our current president.

A lotta people have indeed explained if you could look it up. But the key is do people accept or believe those explanations? Are those explanations self-evident and make it true? Research and judge yourself. :)

Really feel for this woman. Don't agree with this advice exactly. Sounds like the other person is being downright rude n even defamatory though not in the legal sense. Its not as simple as respond in love (and continue being abused n defamed) or come at them with a hammer. When I clicked on this video in June 2024 i didn't look to see how old it was so when she said "president" i didn't know which president she was referring to as i know he has had the show about 4 plus yeas now and we've had 2. I started to click back to see but stopled myself bc i don't want to bring my own bias to the call. At that point it could have been either but only one sentence later i knew who the president was n was not at that time bc she felt she had to say she doesn't love or like it everything about him. Never in my nearly 58 years on the planet have i ever recalled people feeling they need to explain their heart n views to others even those who already knew them n liked them with that preamble. Now why do you suppose that is? I never hear the "other" side feel such an obligation. That tells you alot. It's not that we're just divided John but one side has the bully pulpit in the workplace, universities etc to demonize the other side. For all the stories we hear at times about the crazy conservative unlce there are numerous storiee in families where decent people have been cast aside over people disagreeing with them an painting them in most unfavorable light. For our part aside from the people intentions doing this all we think of you is that your naive or stupid. You think we're evil. Not the same and given the average person's inability to ever apologize this has destroyed families.and friendships.

I think you really need to take the advice from the second half of the video. You don't have to agree with the other side but the least you can do is understand why some people are on guard when its comes to the side of the right. Making massive assumptions like white supremacy is not okay when you want to have relationships with different people but there is an element on the right. I understand it's hard for people to make hurtful assumptions but it's hurtful and they are horrible things to be excused of which means it deserves self-examination and compassion to the other side. Wish you the best.

The caller said she kept telling her cousins she loved her via text as her cousins was “attacking” her. First off I don’t think having a sensitive conversation in regards to politics over text messaging is ever a good idea. Second, We all know that often Messages we send via text is not always interpreted the way you intend it to be interpreted. Third, if I was feeling Hurt and upset by a message A family member sent me and that person kept saying “ I love you”, I would find that very condescending. My guess is this caller is not as innocent as she is portraying herself.

See I like the advice because it’s something I fo all the time. Put myself in others shoes and really listen. Doesn’t mean I change my mind, but I get an understanding of others world views and why they think the way they do. But him telling er her to listen with an open mind makes it sound like the CALLER is the close minded one… and I don’t think it so. I think she got into a conversation, and was shut down as soon as her actual thoughts came out. Then the added stuff at the end. I’m not a fan of this one because of this.

It’s a pretty big thing to call someone a fascist just because of their candidate of choice. I have good friends who have totally opposite political opinions than I do in almost every area. I would never dream of jumping to conclusions on what they “are” based on their political choices, because I know the character of that person better than that. Calling names is pretty childish.

@@carolyn9961 I prefer the 14 features of facism as described by Umbarto Eco in Ur Facism. But there are certainly other definitions that are also pretty good. You can look up summaries on wikipedia, and use a dictionary if some of the words are too big for you.
