One of my favorite found families is the Rampion crew from the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. It starts off as cyborg Cinderella in the future and evolves into something bigger and amazing!

I think I've finally realised why I love shonen anime so much, especially the trope of "my friends make me stronger". As cheesy as it is - it feels like the epitome of a found family trope. And I guess this is more what "nakama" means

The reason I am able to barrel through 900+ episodes of One Piece is because of how strongly the trope of found family is presented between the main group of characters. I completely get what you mean.

I love the Lilo and Stitch tv show so much, like not only was the main cast a family but literally every episode ended with them finding a place in the community for each experiment. It also features my favourite subcategory of found family which is "Starts out as bio/legal family but we just keep sort of adopting all these weirdos."

Sense8 is my favourite show of all time and I wish it had another 20 seasons. It had a TRIAD CECE. A CANON TRIAD AT THE END. SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO CHOOOOOSE. And then like, there's just so much other stuff I love so much. I'm so glad it's on this list.

I will literally never get over this show being like “hey, we see your love triangle you have to pick one storylines and we reject that and instead demand you all understand polyamory exists and these three all love each other sooooo” it’s the best thing I’ve ever witnessed. I am not nor will I ever be over it.

I love these recommendations! I think you'd really love The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Demaline. It's a Canadian book, so I've only seen Canadian booktubers talk about it, but it is a wonderful found family story! It's a YA dystopian book set in Canada about 50 years into the future and the government is hunting down Indigenous people because their bone marrow has the antidote for an epidemic. It's an absolutely beautiful story about a found family simply trying to survive in this world. It is completely heartbreaking and so heartwarming at the same time. While it's not a queer story, it does have queer characters! Also, if you haven't already read The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and a Closed and Common Orbit, I think those are also fantastic diverse found family stories as well!

Oh gosh! I love your videos! and this trope of found families is one of my favorites as well! One of my favorites of this shows up in the Percy Jackson series, of Percy feeling like he's this total misfit and then gets welcomed to a camp where he realizes he's not alone. Then there's the tv show, Supernatural! Yes, Sam and Dean Winchester are brothers, but they find family along the way. Bobby's line of "Family don't end with blood" just seems to voice that beautifully as well

Not sure how I stumble upon your channel but I've watched a few of your videos and i think your recommendation works for me based on a few recommendations that I'm familiar with that I also love! And delighted at your mentions of She-Ra as I absolutely love the series, it was also the series that introduced me to Noelle's work (and I really like them too). I think based on what you've mention in the video, you will really like this series. It checks most of the boxes of things that you've mentioned. Will be subscribing and looking forward to more videos from you !

Love found family! Unintentional but I read To Night Owl from Dogfish today and it is very much about all the ways family can exist. It's middle grade, modern version of The Parent Trap--two girls at summer camp scheming against each other, and then together, as their dads are dating. Must read! Hit me right in the feels, so cute, and so great to see the rep in middle grade.

Thank you SO MUCH for including The Color Purple on this list! It's such an amazing book, but because it's older I never see it talked about online. Celie's emotional growth made me bonkers emotional; I put off reading the book for years because of the visceral depictions of abuse, but I regret not reading it sooner because the catharsis of Celie finding love and respect among her family was so rewarding.

i!!! love!!! found family!!! so goddamn much!!!!! god everything you mentioned was top notch?? you know how much i adore check please and the found family aspect of it. same goes for sense8 (which i really have to rewatch) and a bunch of other stuff you mentioned, because it’s all super duper great. tho i’m not the biggest fan of six of crows, i do see the found family aspect of it as being a big part, so that’s fair. nOW for stuff you didn’t mention: the adventure zone!! oh my god that podcast (and graphic novel series) has perhaps one of the most brilliant and touching found family stories ever, especially in the later arcs of the podcast for the balance arc. it’s 10/10 and i think you’d honestly adore it if you gave it a shot (plus made by actual real life family!! so it’s super legit, feelings wise) should also mention wolf 359 and the bright sessions as super good, explicitly queer (for the latter) podcasts focused on found family and character dynamics - i feel like podcasts are the perfect media platform for these kinds of stories, because they’re always incredibly diverse and made by people with so much passion you can see it bleed into everything they do! books wise, the lies of locke lamora hs a pretty big emphasis on friendship and found family which is also very well done, at least in the first two books. and i’m blanking on any other titles but i’ll let you know once they come to me. for shows imma just say this: BLACK!! SAILS!!!!! it’a brilliant and amazing and i love it so much. so so queer. (the first season of the bold type is also 10/10 and i think you’d love it a lot) needless to say, i care about this a lot. if you ever do videos about it again imma be the happiest person ever tbh

Nimona is great! I wouldn't have thought of it as a found family story, but you're right, it definitely is. Many of the books you mentioned are already on my TBR list, so I'm excited to see that! Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Buffy are perfect shows for this! I love them both so much. (And I love your explanation of Buffy, haha!) Sense 8 is also a great show! I should probably check out pushing daisies, since it's the only one you mentioned that I haven't seen.

For a moment I thought you were going to mention The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, but I understand why it doesn't really fit into the trope (even though it still kind of does?) Evelyn and Harry's friendship is honestly really beautiful. Anyway, great list! The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Harry Potter and Buffy will always be my favourite found families ever

Avatar is also a found family series. They spend so much time together, Ang, really, has no one else because of... events. Zuko also struggles with family issues. And in the end he manages to realize what is his idea of family and what he wants from a family. Also, I have watched The Umbrella Academy recently, and I don't know if it's about found families, but it's definitely about an unconventional family, and that's the best part of the show.

I tend to be specifically looking for found family parents, where an older person is providing the nurturing and sense of belonging that a younger adult didnt get from abusive or neglectful blood parents and the younger person loves them back and is trying to learn how to be a positive force in their lives back. It's probably because I've had a lot of replacement mothers in my life and they are wonderful. It does seem to be a much more rare trope than found siblings though. Instead I find either outright adoption of a small child or a lot of the dead mentor trope or the you've learned all I have to teach and now must leave me trope. I want more of I will be there for you when you age because you were there for me when I was growing past abuse. not to take away from the found siblings trope at all. my chosen sister and I recently had a little ceremony to formalize that we were family and it was so meaningful
@scrollsofdragons362

My faves have to be Orphan Black and Supernatural both with blood, adoption and just found family. Foxhole Court with a dad which is the coach then like the elder siblings and the younger ones. The Raven Boys and Brooklyn 999 same.

Love this idea, and I really want to read Real Queer America - it sounds incredible! BTW, not trying to call you out or anything at all because I'm sure you're probably unaware as I was until recently, but it turns out that Alice Walker is fervently anti-Semitic, like along the bonkers conspiracy theory line. As a Jewish woman, it broke my heart to discover that because I loved The Color Purple, but learning what I did about her beliefs and how long she's held them and how absolutely inane and disturbing they are, I had to immediately remove her books from my shelves, and it's a little painful whenever I see people talking about them now. Of course it's each person's decision to decide how to handle this kind of thing, but I know that you're very conscious of things like this and just wanted to make it known if you didn't know it already. (go to forward[dot]com and search her name, the title of the main piece I read is Alice Walker’s Conspiracy Theories Aren’t Just Anti-Semitic - They’re Anti-Black)
