I’m an Aurora Chapter kinda guy. I had no idea they existed back in the 2nd edition days. I just painted my blokes green and black and the owner of the local hobby shop was all “nice Aurora army you are working on” and I suddenly had a path to follow. All I knew about them until much later down the line is they are green blokes. And called Aurora. There’s a lot more info on them available these days though, which is great! - I’ve recently dug out my childhood copy of 2nd edition and I’m painting up my Aurora blokes again.

The thing I love about the Carcharodons is that they are heavily implied to be the terran contingent of Raven Guard that Corax exiled, and I can build a heresy army around their way of war.

''The primarch lifted his hands to his head, placing his fingertips just below the marks on his temple, one an entry wound, the other a scar where Fabius had dug the needle from his skull. ‘Though my brother’s help was not won without cost,’ said Fulgrim with a winning smile. ‘I had to allow our enemies to shoot me in the head to secure it. Ah, with such unsubtle wiles do we ensnare the foolish and the naïve.’ '' Sharrowkyn was allowed to get the shot in by Fulgrim, who knew he was there the entire time in order to emotionally manipulate Perturabo. Sharrowkyn was manipulated into allowing Fulgrim's ascension to daemonhood, Fulgrim at no point was dead nor in danger of being so. He was back on his feet within minutes with no interference by the powers of chaos.

A good number of the ones North mentioned like Black Dragons, Iron Hands, White Scars, Raven Guard are also on my favourites list. I do like the Salamanders too for the comical fact they're humane pryomaniacs, also ironic enough despite not being an "official" chapter Blood Ravens for me are interesting for their enigmatic roots. Best part is for me, Deathwatch can include any of my favourites so any bikes I got can be Scars, any melee can be Scars or Ravens. Phobos marines can be Ravens or any model with a bionic can be a Iron Hand.

Iron Hands player here. Here are my thoughts: Iron Hands: These guys are for mature players only who know fortune is not always smiling down on you. Despite this they still persevere. Good call on them. White Scars: Nice sales pitch as I didn´t know much of them before. Raven Guard: Shouldn´t they be Asian to have a ninja background? First thing which comes to mind is Edgar Allan Poe though than anything else with his poem The Raven. When the Primarch vanishes he even says "Nevermore" like it is done in the poem. What people don´t get when they describe Corax as being "Emo" is the fact that Edgar Allan Poe was struggling with anxiety and depression in his life so it is no small wonder that you won´t get a flamboyant, blonde super hero but rather shades of grey and a rather bleak outlook with Corax as he is linked to Edgar Allan Poe. Minotaurs: Khorne loves red, brass and bronze. Therefore I am sure Khorne warbands would also like to run around in such a colour theme. Carcharadons: When I hear of them I have to think about the movie Jaws and the metahuman from Suicide Squad. Flesh Tearers: Yep, their Chapter Master knew in advance that there was a gigantic can of worms incoming. Respect to the writer who put such brave words in his speech bubble as I am sure GW was not amused. Black Templars: Good design but atrocious rules in 3rd 40K. They were actually "rewarded" when failing a Ld check as then they would charge the enemy and be stuck in melee where you want them to be. I would add the Rainbow Warriors from the 80s. They are definitely not grimdark and hail from a time in which GW devs had fun with satire as the Rainbow Warriors were inspired by Greenpeace and hail from a world called Prism (I kid you not). Nowadays however the rainbow icon has been usurped by another movement and would lead to unsavory debates when mentioned so it is no surprise that they have been forgotten. Is it goofy? Yes, and it is fine as SM chapters shouldn´t be serious all the time.

Interesting range of chapters there, North. I was half-expecting the Dark Angels to appear in the list since your Astral Blades are one of their successors! A lot of those chapters seem to be very uncompromising, much like the ‘special forces’ you talked about in your video about least favourite chapters; forces there to get the job done and not faff around with saving absolutely everyone, so to speak. Regarding the Black Dragons, I can recommend you check out David Annandale’s novel ‘The Death of Antagonis’ if you haven’t already. It’s a pretty good book about the chapter and further explores the tensions surrounding their mutations.

Apologies for how long this comment is, but I like just about every chapter mentioned in this video. Especially my loyalist Word Bearer boys of the Exorcists. White Scars, epic. One of my favorite legions and probably my favorite loyalist primarch. Also the progenitor I chose for my Azure Wolves. As, fun fact, if you take the Scars and simply replace the Asiatic steppe nomad aesthetic with Iron Age Germanic, you get a chapter that resembles actual vikings or central to northern germanic tribes so much more than the Space Wolves have ever been in their existence. Raven Guard are awesome and need more love. The "emo marine" is annoying and a true shame that GW has leaned full force into it. Nykona Sharrowkyn didn't kill Fulgrim though, he was fine in like 10 minutes as Fabius was there. He did almost kill him though. It makes sense that the Carcharodons are loyalist World Eater equivalents, the main theory is that they're a mix of Raven Guard, Night Lord, and World Eater gene-seed. There's also a theory that they were spawned from the Ashen Claws, the exile renegades from the Raven Guard. Minotaurs are loyalist Iron Warriors. The creator of them said this as well. *crusading sounds intensify* The Black Dragons are grand, Cursed Founding lads. More akin to Baraka from mortal combat than Wolverine. That story you were remembering was a girl who managed to escape from the Dark Eldar and saw the Black Dragons board and was quivering in fear, where one of the squad members said "I bet she wouldn't be afraid of us if we were Ultramarines". Iron Hands are the progenitor for my other homebrew chapter, the Gorgons Resplendent. So obviously a fan of that choice. Flesh Tearers are grand, and I almost did an army of them.

@armata_strigoi_0 Год назад
Yeah, all great picks. I knew most of the details you mentioned, only thing that's new on me is the Minotaurs being Iron Warriors successors, that's interesting. Main reason I'm replying is because, funnily enough, one of my long term projects is home-brewing a SW proxy that's less cringe-inducing and when it comes to official chapters, the White Scars are the ones I've "borrowed" most from. They're of course only one amongst many other inspirations, but they're certainly the best example of how to implement such a culture in 40K. Overall they draw on the archetype of the Wild Hunt and the broader Indo-European phenomenon of the Koryos (and more specifically I guess, Ulfhednar). Could go deeper explaining the symbology/spirituality but the comment would be much longer than it already is lol. Working title is "The Furious Host" but that may be too on the nose. To the wider Imperium, they're a fleet-based chapter who appear at random, wreak bloody and uncompromising destruction upon the enemy, then disappear, much like the Carcharodons. But unlike the latter, they don't seem to recruit from any of the worlds they visit, which has led to speculation that they do in fact have a home world from which to draw aspirants. If this is the case, its location, composition, habitability, or any other details are completely unknown, although whether this is due to their general uncooperativeness or some deeper secret is likewise, cause for speculation. Anyway, I'll stop rambling at you about unsolicited homebrew lol. I'd be interested to hear how you tackle this kind of thing with your Azure Wolves though.
@kennetheisenbraun5217
@kennetheisenbraun5217 Год назад
@Armata Strigoi That's cool dude. I love hearing about people's homebrews. This'll also probably be a long comment as well, lol. That said, another chapter you could possibly draw some inspiration from, if you don't know them already, are the Storm Wardens (space scots). I actually started with Space Wolves as my first army I collected, but as I got more into ancient Germanic culture, history, and religion (having always been naturally drawn to it) I realized how awful of a job they do of representing it. So I decided to make my own, and after a couple incarnations of the chapter, I've settled on them being White Scars successors, though they're still very much a WIP. Originally, I described them as just being a "Germanic themed chapter" but realized that was too vague/broad so narrowed it to a relative handful of tribes to take as the base for them. As well as some key myths I wanted to include. Some small nods to their inspiration is that they're a 9th founding chapter. 9 being the number of Woden/Odin. I'm going to model all the combat knives in my army as saexs. They also use spears, a good selection can be found on those new stormcast for AoS. Some not so small nods are: The 1st company are My Einherjar, all having the finest artifaced armor and weapons the chapter can produce, as befitting the Veterans of the Chapter. The scout company is based on the Harii, so all their armor, weapons, and even faces are painted completely black. The ranks of my chapter are a bit on the nose, like chaplains are Godi, captains are jarls, etc. My Ulfhednar are a special unit. And to go a little into it, the White Scars primarch curse (this is something every chapter has and originates from the Deathwatch tabletop rpg) is that they eventually lose themselves to a berserker rage basically. My Ulfhednar are the members of each company that have mastered this rage and unleash it in battle. 9 squads exist, each comprised of 9 warriors led by a Godi (i.e. it's a 10-man squad, but the Sergeant is modeled as a chaplain). I also have some wild hunt as well. A demi-company formation that is outside the normal chapter structure. Comprised of "dead" marines (basically when a marine is chosen for the Hunt, they are added to the list of the dead and not permitted to speak to those outside the hunt) and chaplains (the only ones allowed to speak outside the hunt). They're exclusively made up of bikers and jump pack marines. They all wear black with hooded skull faces helmets. Their homeworld of Aesirheim (working title) lies to the galactic North and borders the Halo stars, which they patrol. It's a fuedal/Tribal world of predominantly dense forests but does have rolling hills, steppes, icy fjords, and mountains. The chapter sends out "expedition fleets," usually consisting of a company or two each in order to respond to threats and, in general, patrol the areas considered under their protection. Kind of akin to viking raids, but less pillaging (unless you're a xenos). That's pretty much where I'm at with them, and I'd love to hear more about your dudes. Apologies if this was too long and kind of rambly, I am kinda tired when writing this.

Look, I'm a wolf player but I can agree to disagree on your somewhat irrational hatred for them. But you are giving the bloody Minotaurs a pass ?! Nearly everything you profess to hate about the wolves the Minotaurs pretty much have. Unpunished actions against the Inquisition: check, unpunished fights against the Grey Knights: check, creator pet status: check (heavy access to heresy gear such a cataphract armour and super heavies). Magically able to endure stupid high attrition and still fight at full strength: check. They even got into a fight with the Custodes and killed some and faced no repercussions for it. That's terminator level plot armor there. To me, they are the edgy jerk-ass anti hero done wrong where the Space Sharks are the ruthless anti hero done right. I otherwise somewhat agree about your other favs.
@northernexile
@northernexile Год назад
Yes but there is a solid reason WHY the Minotaurs get away with stuff. It’s narrative harmony - they are the suck boys to the High Lords of Terra…guys higher that the Inquisiton. Even a Grey Knight or Custodes couldn’t legally touch a Minotaur and that’s saying a lot. But there is a reason for it. Space Wolves break the narrative because they’re Space Wolves so…go with it. Nah. Killing custodes I’m with you on, they shouldn’t need to do that. But getting away with murder? Yeah that’s fine for a chapter that is basically the High Lords chamber militant.
@alexandrekabes1349
@alexandrekabes1349 Год назад
@@northernexile I would argue the bit bout the High Lords outranking the Inquisition. Material I read makes it clear that EVERYONE, high lords included, falls under the =I='s authority. (albeit, as the Ultras would put it, this is more of a theoretical than a practical case as every faction has at some point or other got in a fight with them) I would argue Wolves get the (unfairly or not) First Founder privilege within the Imperium. First Founder chapters get away with a lot (looking at you Unforgiven) more than post second founding chapters (RIP Celestial Lions). But I can see the logic even if I differ slightly.
