Congratulations Ivan, fantastic watch. About 25 years ago when I started collecting my dad was very insistent on Panerai. He was a very serious collector with a lot of horological knowledge. So I took his advice and saved up and bought one in 1999. It’s the only watch that stayed in my collection since, others have come and gone. Only other luxury watches I’ve owned are Tudor and GS....I’ll take the Panerai any day. Size shape and design can be a bit polarizing, but quality can’t be denied. Great review as always man!
That case guard is kinda handy if you decide to do something crazy like yard work with a pan on. Looks great on leather, mine hasn’t left rubber since 99’.
An excellent review of a gorgeous watch. Big and expensive, but undeniably cool and stylish. More interesting to me than the Rolex or Omegas this competes against.
I own this watch. Got it back in November and I love it. Have coveted Panerai for many years and finally pulled the trigger. Great review. I (fortunately) do not see a gap between my crown guard and the body. The power reserve has lasted for 8 days on a full wind. As you point out, it does take a while to get it fully wound, but that is part of it's charm imho. Enjoy the watch!
@@tailgaters337 great question. I see on the site it has a solid back but mine matches the one on this review. Has a small window through which you can see the movement. Love the watch. Bold classic Panerai styling. Highly recommend!
Congrats mate. I did struggle initially with the value for money proposition, however, like you pointed out it has a somewhat relaxed vibe to this piece. I find that with my other watches with chapter rings, rotating bezels 4 hz second hands etc to want them to be highly accurate and I get flustered when I notice something over 8-10 sec/ day too fast. Panerai you take joy in simply seeing an appropriate time as you sit at the cafe sipping an espresso.
Oh I didn't know what my life was missing until I saw this video. In the past I have been living as an empty shell of a man. I have done everything that everyone told me to do: go to school, find a job, married a girl, start a family and only to lose my job, wife divorced me and took my home, my kids and monthly alimony. I was wondering what everything was for, I had everything. Then after this video, I realized the common theme of my failures... I didn't have a Panerai luminor watch. I hope to turn my life around. Since I can't afford gas and insurance anyways, I just sold my car and traded in for my own Panerai luminor. The dealer said I will receive it tomorrow! I am super excited! And this guy is right! Thanks Ivan, for leading me to this realization, that This Panerai Luminor is a MUST BUY!!
Wow… thanks for sharing your dramatic story. I hope you enjoy it… although I suspect it will not fill the void in our lives… not in the way you’re hoping for…!
Beautiful man, I just bought a 915, after owning 5 previous PAM's, subs rads and lums. This one is my 3rd p5000, I LOVE that movement, makes for a nice Sunday morning ritual 🙂. Mine is a v series, so has the display case back like yours, unlike the solid one on the current 915's. I've come to realise that the fully polished 44mm Bettarini case is my favourite, and one of the watch world's icon's, so damn beautiful! Fellow sandgroper here.
Iconic watch! Beauty in its simplicity. Tan/patina colored numerals and indicies go beautifully with the leather strap and tan stitching. And as he mentioned, it's remarkably comfortable for a large watch. More so than similar sized Breitlings. Nice video, Ivan!
I am thrilled you read my comment! And responded to it instantly! I am also thrilled I am exceptional, because I am the only one who did not get your “heart”. I am a 44mm Luminor base (two hands - no seconds hand to prove +/-4 sec. a day accuracy) model fan in titanium ONLY... and I would not pay $5000.00 US for it! Thank you so much! I will watch your other videos.
What a great review! As someone looking to buy a panerai potentially in the coming year this was very informative. You tube reviews of this model are scarce! I have so much to say. Firstly, alarming theres a gap from the case to crown guard! Luminors have push in crowns so if this isn't screwed tight to the case is it watertight? This would be my only watch and I'd go swimming in the sea with it, should I be worried...?? Also looked at this, this morning on the website it now has a closed caseback! Thats not a deal breaker for me I actually prefer that but its interesting to note. So strange the Pams historically never had minute tracks! As a dive watch when minutes are crucial you'd think that was mandatory. Sure you know pams were basically derived from 1930s rolex pocket watches hence their distinctive looks. Love the less is more style of this watch, no subdial or date to clutter the dial. Simplicity is genius! The lume is a much lighter shade of brown than on the website, which I'm glad for, the dark brown and black dial doesn't work, glad to see it's much lighter in daylight. Also noticed that on insta posts. Love to know more about the longevity on the lume, can you make a comparison/ timelapse vid? Also and last I do love the numerals font of this model. They all differ subtly and this exact one is my favourite. Looking at this and a 779/424 currently... Thanks again 👍
Thanks for the comprehensive thoughts! I think the reviews are scarce as it is still a fairly new model, and Panerai don't loan these out to creators and reviewers like me :) The crown guard is definitely screwed in tight and I am confident on the water resistance of the watch as it would've been tested individually. The gap I described reflects more engineering tolerance/precision and doesn't affect the water tightness. The solid caseback thing is a curiosity on the website as it comes out solid on my mobile but exhibition on my laptop/desktop browsers. I confirmed with the AD that it is exhibition. The lume lasts through the night... not the brightest (Seiko diver Lumibrite actually beats it) but still easy to read by the morning in darkness.
@@PerthWAtch Thanks. The website is notoriously random! Good to hear about the CG. Screws can work loose on all mechanical devices but I cant much forum chat about it so probs not an issue. My seiko tuna has awesome lume so good to have a comparison 👍
Hey Ivan, Congrats on your panerai purchase as I too have just made a recent rolex purchase. Thanks for sharing on your unboxing and review on your new panerai! Best regards!
It's not one for me (like every other Panerai) but is an iconic design, well made and if you like it and have the means why not? More people should listen to their own hearts/wants rather than what others say they should get. It's a lovely watch and you should enjoy mate 👍
That's a very nice watch and if I ever pick up a Panerai this would be my choice as well. The fact that the fauxtina isn't as noticeable IRL as on the promo pics is a huge plus for me. Enjoy in a good health and happy new year.
@@PerthWAtch I actually drove down to San Francisco yesterday to the AD to look at this watch - and others, including the beautiful 992. The 914 is even more impressive in person. It’s simple but really jumps out at you.
I love cushion watches, and the Panerai fulfils this with it's timeless look. However, the company suffers from delusions of grandeur! Their watches are over-priced for what they are, and the point that they cannot compete with the likes of Omega or Breitling for quality is very true. If this model was priced at $3000-3500 US I would consider purchasing one, otherwise not a cats chance in hell! ................Great review by the way!
Thanks for the feedback. I think quality wise it's fine, but it's the specs where it just doesn't seem to stack up - for cheaper you can get an Omega SMP 300m with ceramic dial, enamel on bezel, great quality bracelet, and a Master Chronometer movement that knocks everything else in the price point out of the park!
@@PerthWAtch I agree about on the specs issue with you. But I have a friend who worked in a jewellers up until late last year. They were authorised Panerai dealers. According to him, hardly a week went by when they were not having Panerai’s bought back due to quality issues. Crystals falling out, winder latches breaking, water getting into the movement etc. So based on his experience, this is why I have trouble trusting their quality and quality control!
relaxing is cranking through 2x the mainspring with a huge guard in the way, never to have the satisfaction of seeing a running seconds to confirm the effort. however still more satisfying as that time panarai tried to sell us the Brooklyn bridge 🌉😆
I like the pan look, this is a bit odd without the seconds hand, but in a good way.... congratulations on adding it to your collection....⌚🏴⌚🏴
Very nice review! I almost sure, if I have this possible, I get the same version - 00914. Nothing useless: date, second hand or logo... Thank You ones again!
Thanks for excellent review, the first I have seen of this model. Currently my favorite of the new models. Love the very simple dial as well. I did have a PAM 562 8 Day and always regretted that I sold it. Your extensive review will really help in making my decision whether or not to get the 914. Cheers, Carl
Most welcome - yeah it’s still relatively new I guess, so no other in depth reviews of this that I have seen. Let us know if you do end up pulling trigger :)
I just bought a Avi-8 Bottingam P51 grey/blue case/hands from Long island watches black Friday sale saving $120. I now see why every review compares the crown Guard. This is the first review I have watched of this brand. I did notice the space on the crown guard and for $6,000 , that would be a problem for me. I have been going to Rolex, Breitling, Hamilton, Tissot dealers out Christmas shopping and I agree a Breitling or even a basic Rolex would be my choice
Huge congratulations, Ivan, and highly enjoy this piece of classic design and art! Great video as usual, and I really appreciated the strap fashion show. Panerais are truly gorgeous IMO, and I think people sometimes forget how old this classic timeless clean design really is. Their famous power reserve is of course also always impressive. Personally however, even if I'd saved up that amount of money for a watch, due to the size a Panerai would look totally ridiculous on my tiny wrist. Sadly, since I adore that design. I'd probably rather look for i.e. a Grand Seiko in this price range (yeah, of course totally different design but still gorgeous watches).
If I buy a Panerai, I want something manual wind, with an open back. They are hard to come by sadly. The size of this one may make things tricky for me, and I do wish it had a seconds hand like the non 8 day models, but I do like it. A lot.
@@PerthWAtch Two reasons. One is stupid, but I like the interact with my watches even if I don't wear them. I like taking my Speedy after three days to winding it up. Second, I think it's more historically accurate to the brand. Not to mention, the 8-day has the open case back. Seems harder to find that with an automatic.
The pam looks so good on the rock wrist yet on my wrist would be absolutely weird. Had a few friends love the design, personally I would prefer Tudor and Omega. Congratulations, if you later flip it, let us know why. Cheers
@@PerthWAtch my wrist is too small for it, although same as your wrist, around 17cm. Lately I have been hating big watches. Dunno what future tells me.
Thanks for the video. Regarding the straps i like more the black one with white sticking, also the smaller buckle. When i buy my 1st panerai i will go for a smaller buckle.
The Panerai Luminor is an icon not only of horology design but of modern Italian industrial design. Going back to its 1930s military roots, its form has always followed its function. What confuses people is what while Blancpain and Rolex and others like Doxa and Aquastar moved into the dive watch space starting from 1953 to 1970, Panerai had been in the space many years before. As a front runner in the field and as a small specialty producer until circa 1994, Panerai did not engage in the use of chapter rings, helium release valves and the other hallmarks of what people now perceive as “must haves” on a diver. Panerai needs to be appreciated on its own terms upon which it succeeds splendidly. I treasure my manual wind PAM00632 for different reasons than I have treasured my other divers such as an Omega 1200 M, a Doxa Sub 300, a Grand Seiko SBGA229 and a Seiko Samurai Great White Shark. There is much PAM bashing but mostly from non-owners. The satisfactions of having a Panerai on one’s wrist are many.
Hi I'm trying to decide between this and the PAM00176. I prefer the brown/orange markers of this one to the white/green ones of most other Panerai, but I'm wondering how noticeable it is in real life? On the stock photos they look very brown but on some videos here on RU-vid they don't look that much different to the normal white ones.
It’s subtle, but it’s there when you look, especially if you know what to look for, and also especially if you have it side by side with one that has the more standard white/green lume.
Is there AR coating on that lens? It only looks clear when viewed head on, at any other angle it looks foggy. In your picture of the watch on 4 different straps only the top right hand picture looks clear and the others look grey by comparison. The lens on some watches looks so clear you hardly realise it's there but the lens of that watch looks obvious or am I just imagining it?
I think that's because of the white ceiling of the room I photographed those in... my bad. The AR is actually pretty good, but perhaps not as good as say the double AR on many Omega watches.
Disappointing. The first watch I ever assembled was a Panerai clone. I put a regulated and decorated UNITAS movement in it, with 9 o'clock seconds. Domed sapphire crystal and a sapphire caseback. I picked a black sterile dial with white lume and put it in a black PVD case. It's great. One of the most accurate watches I own. Total build cost of around 400 USD. I just don't understand how Panerai keeps going with their pricing. I do, however, appreciate the 8 days of runtime they put in that movement and I think that's where the money is best spent. The look is commodity at this point but the guts of these things is the most impressive part. You have the real thing, there, and I'm very happy for you.
Thanks for that Randy - yeah it does make one wonder how the price is justified. In the end, a proportion of it we can understand... the rest, well it’s padding and profit!
Awesome review. Great work. I will watch more from your channel. I am considering the Pam1313, same dimensions as yours. The size bugs me though. I have 17.6ish wrists, and have long arms as I am 6foot 3. I wonder if height and arm length also helps with bigger watches? In the shop it looks great, but I worry in real life the size will always bug me. My wrists are almost the same size as yours, and I wonder if you still are happy with the size? For the price I want no worries as there are loads of great watches ..but my passion is for this one, but not if I find out latter its to big after I wear it to the pub a few times and also attract attention for wearing for a watch that does not fit. Thanks for reading.
Hi there! It is a big watch but it is not inappropriate for my wrist. It may depend also on whether you have a flatter or rounder profile - the former would carry somewhat larger watches. If you are rather worried about the size and fit, I would suggest getting a 1:1 knockoff or homage to try out first.
I'm seriously thinking of getting the PAM00778, there is just something about that white dial that's appealing to me. I've tried it on and it's very comfortable. I'd love to know what your thoughts are on the white dial versions. Nice review!!
Interesting choice... certainly not quintessential Panerai and for me that dial looks too busy (but that’s cos I’m looking for absolute classic PAM). Style is personal though, and if you like it I’m certainly not one to say there’s anything wrong with that :)
@@PerthWAtch I know what you mean about it being a bust dial! I've since tried a 560 & a 590. I'm now leaning towards a black dial version! Too many choices!!
A beauthy it is, but a gap between the case and the guard? Possibly meant to be? - so as to be near the polished case without making contact until it must? If the focus is on the mounting of the crown guard being solid, could it possibly be intentional?
I believe you are right the best panarei to buy ... what do you think is the best reverso to buy ? I still can’t decide between large and medium... have 16 cm wrists ... would love to hear your opinion
Where's the seconds hand. I would be constantly doubting if it's running 8 days reserve or not. They claim - minimalism but crown guard such overkill then
How did you get this watch with an open back? On the official website the back is closed, and also when I asked my local panerai dealer they said the 914 comes with a closed back… Would really love to get one with an open back
When I got this the website was glitchy - on laptop browser it showed display back but on my phone it showed solid back. I confirmed with my AD that it was display back before putting down a deposit. Perhaps they have now changed it to solid back?
I got my 915 (= 914 + seconds hand) last week. I like it very. I need also additional buckles, what can you recommend? Do you know maybe what is the exact width of the pin, somewhere is written 3,8 somewhere 4,0 mm
I have viewed lots of this reference model on the used & new market. Not one has the display case. How come yours has that feature ? In fact now I think I wouldn't buy one should it have one in fear of it being a fake. Even Panerai have this watch with solid case back
“Even Panerai”? 😂😂 Sounds like you’re claiming to know what they think without having spoke to them! I’ll let you look around a bit more, maybe try actually talking to Panerai ;) PS. Heard of limited editions?
I suppose with that thing low crown it's hell to wind it up to full power, as I have a Parnis homage which looks almost identical to this one except the movement, of course and the crown there is a hassle to use
When I checked previously there was a glitch where the website would show a solid back on some browsers but the display back on others... I wonder if it’s still glitched?
@@PerthWAtch no sir this watch no longer is available with sapphire caseback. They sold a few with sapphire and later switched to steel. Only the old stock models have a Sapphire back and they are not produced any more.
As far as I know, it's the opposite. It started with a display caseback and then quickly changed into a solid one. A shame since I like the transparent version.
I “feel” the amount of time passed since I last wound it up full - like if I last wound it up on Sunday (good to pick the same day each week) and it’s now Thursday, then I know there’s about 4 days (or 50% reserve) left. Not rocket science, is it? 😂
@@PerthWAtch I get it, but how do you know you fulled winded it? since there is no power reserve indicator how do you know when to stop winding? thanks again merry christmas
I purchased this model for its simplicity and exhibition case back. This model - with its exhibition case back - is hard to find. I think it is limited to 1,000 pieces.
@@PerthWAtch on your watch it shows a number out of 1000... So yes, you have a more rare variation. I hope to find one with an exhibition caseback, or may just go for a Pam 00560 instead (or even the 00112)
One of the Panerai watches on this video is a copy of my Steeldive. For the life of me I can't understand why it has an exhibition back. It's not worth $6000, but in my opinion no watch is
I kept it! only thing is i also got a 112 - but do you think the pam gaurd lever will loosen up since this 112 only has 56 power reserve its winded daily!
There was a bug on the website where some browsers show display and others show solid back. I wouldn’t trust the dealer employee unless they’ve taken the pains to check with the Panerai distributor who has stock, or they actually have the watch physically in store.
Nice dial , but could do with minutes marked and a second hand (even if it's just so you can tell its running). Crown guard looks clumsy and the buckle looks immense. Hand wind is handy on watches I use occasionally but if you need a watch to use all week just buy an automatic.
Interesting comment about the guard and buckle (often called “pre-V” style) which are both icons of the brand - I actually appreciate them, and they are part of the Panerai DNA for many. Hand wind is something that’s not for everyone and certainly not for convenience... it’s a whole forum conversation and more on this. For ultimate convenience, well... I would get a quartz!
@@PerthWAtch Obviously personal taste is the issue here or we would all be wearing the same. As for quartz, I have twice been let down in the Greek islands by a quartz watch's battery with no hope of finding a replacement. Phones don't always work out there so I was reliant on a handheld GPS.It won't happen again
Haha what a story! Sorry I wasn’t complete in my last statement - for ultimate convenience (including not running out of battery) I would go with a solar quartz (a la Eco Drive or Tough Solar) :)
@@PerthWAtch I would agree with you except that I recently bought a Casio solar and it didn't work, it was perhaps too cheap (maybe "refurbished ") I will give it another try from a different source, they do have some promising looking options.
@@PerthWAtch best watch for me is the Luminor 2. Not so thick, not so wide... Also the Luminor 40 or the RadioMir 8 Days are great pieces. Or on standard Luminor the Chrono Fly Back Zebra but the price goes up...as I'm sure you know.
