Fair play for doing first belt on video,, it will be fine,, done loads over the years even with the cam locks and bottom pulley locked when you turn by hand always waiting for that smack on a valve,,to this day even with lockers i still put couple marks with tippex just for a visual reminder,,,,,

Thanks very much I think after doing it now I agree, I Don't think the locking tool is enough to make sure its in the right place...tippex is definitely needed too.

Cracking work pal... no harm in a little extra sealant when fitting water pump... however you literally need a smear to work in harmony with the factory seal... too much can sometimes have an adverse affect when tightening down...also you don't want to risk it spilling into the Bolt holes as this will also affect tightening and at worst can cause fracturing. Great videos !!

Fair play to you, I’ve been fiddling with cars since I was in my mid teens and have only just done my first timing belt at the age of 50, on my step daughters Ka (Fiat 500 engine). Back in the day cars had chains, not belts, so I never had to do a belt when I was fpdoing my own maintenance on my 60s Triumph back in the 90s, and I’ve always left my more modern cars to the professionals since then, but I baulked at the price quoted to change the belt on the Ka so I thought I’d do it myself. After a 3 day long week plus this evening I now know why they cost so much to do, it’s not the parts but the hours and hours of labour! I probably took about 12 hours altogether… Having the entire front of the car stripped must have made the job a lot easier! By the way I’m pretty sure the Ka belt had never been changed since new in 2009…

Thank you very much, it’s a very daunting task but if you follow it step by step then it’s straightforward, but I definitely 💩 a few times. Well done for giving it a go. Did you follow my video or watch someone else. Taking the front end off definitely makes a difference but not necessary.

I’m the same..I left school & started mechanics but as I hated school I didn’t want to go to college. Like you say bills need paying & the pay wasn’t great so ended up in factory work..now 44 & I do all my mechanics (good job as I own a T5) wish I would’ve stuck at it. Great job 👍🏻

I reckon you would master the dark art of timing belts buddy just buy a really cheap 500 & give it a go if it goes wrong then you can always break for parts & fill that garage back up lol... you don't give yourself a credit look at the spraying your doing now ... give it a go my friend P.s don't forget to film it.

Well done with that! It’s a scary job I should know 🤣 I would recommend you take rocker cover off again and put some sealant on the shoulders of the dips where the pulleys are located either side fiat do this as you will leak oil on the corners otherwise….500s are a real issue with space to work on eh!

Thanks very much for the advice I wasn't sure If the rubber gasket would be enough to stop it leaking... I will probably go back over it and make sure its sealed properly... thanks for watching 👀

Hi Big Man... That Belt Change was a big step for you, as you said. People below think it went well. I like you, am unsure if the slackness in the old belt was right ?. Unsure in Vid. If the new one had the same ??? I thought it should Taught/Tight 360 degrees otherwise there may be a chance of the belt jumping a tooth or two due to any slackness. 🤷‍🤷

Going through your ‘back-catalogue’ of vids and this one was perfect, as I’ve just received a “Gates” cam belt kit for my 1.4 500, (very difficult to get Fiat parts in Hong Kong now). Took it to my ‘bigger job/need a lift’ Mechanic last night, and the blood drained from his face when he realised it wasn’t the aux belts - I might now be taking this on myself 😱, and, as per your and others comments, I’m bricking it! Given the front-end of your car was ‘off’ (I.e. much more accessible) and it still wasn’t easy, how long do you reckon it would take with the engine truly ‘in-car’?? Keep ‘em comin’! JC

Great video. No frills and straightforward. Well done. I had the spray bottles which you showed in the video. Think I got them from B and M or Wickes. They were a waste of time. If you're looking for a decent hand pump spray see if there's an Autosmart mobile rep in the area. I've got a couple of sprays from them which I use with their products. About £12 each. Use them with the Autosmart products ~ not bad either. Just one question ~ where did you rest the feet of your engine support crossbar? Was it in the rain channels of the wings? Wasn't quite clear. Thanks again.
@RevivingSalvage
@RevivingSalvage 2 года назад
Thanks very much for the advice I will take a look at their products ... I bought mine off amazon lol... I tried to set it back as far as I could too the shocks but there's not a lot of room the front edge was just resting on top of the wings hardly anything really I used the jack more to take the weight 😅
@Dickymint1000
@Dickymint1000 2 года назад
@@RevivingSalvage Meant to say, if you find an Autosmart rep get some Red 7. When you valet the car pre sale spray it over the bodywork before washing and watch! Any iron in the dirt turns red. Wash it off and you have a super smooth finish before polishing. Far cheaper than clay barring and much quicker!

When you put the belt on it was slack at the front. This was because you were using an after market belt, and needed to release the cam pully to reset the Vernier. Which you did not do so the timing is incorrect. If you refit a genuine belt you can usually get away without releasing the Vernier pully but not always. The amount that the timing is out will not damage the engine but it will not have the full power it should have. When sealing the sump and water pump you are not supposed to use the whole tube of sealant!
