My Grip - How I grip the club and why…

We need to use a grip that supports the way we move the golf club. It can be personal but mostly it needs to be functional.
Let me help you get an effortless golfswing with speed and accuracy. A good release will help you to a better impact and longer drives and irons without slice and hook. How to swing a golf club need to be adjusted to your skill level and experience.
Long and straight is the goal for everyone but it takes time. Try to focus on one thing not everything when you practise. Impact, face control and swingpath will always be the most important part to drill. We focus too much on rotation but no good golf shot will be executed just by rotating.
I’m naturally right handed but all my tips works for both left handed and right handed golfers.
We also need to understand that many myths in golf are misleading. We shall not keep our head still, only start with the hips, look only at the ball or keep the left or right arm straight.
If you use callaway, ping, titleist or taylor made clubs doesn’t matter you can learn to hit good golf shots. Your loft or your shaft on the club will not change but you can get better.
Find what inspires you. The pga tour, longdrivers or other good golfers can all help you find better golf shots. Watch what they do instead of listed to what they say. Listen mostly to your body and figure out what you need to do to produce the same results as the pros on TV.
Mike Malaska, Mike Austin, Mike Dunaway and Steve Pratt are some of my favorite golf instructors online. Find the tips that make your golf better. Decide what you want to hit. I teach a draw but many like a fade and nobody likes a hook or slice.
Your hips or your lag is not the key to golf. Your hands will decide the shot and you can do like Tiger Woods and trust your hands. Teach your hands to hit different shots. Hit big hooks and slices to understand what happens. Only straight is not gonna teach you anything.
Bryson Dechambeu and Kyle Birkshire can inspire you to hit it longer. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson can give you inspiration and motivation to test new things and new golf shots. Linn Grant, Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg can show you the future of golf.
The Masters, Players Championship, The Players, The Open and US Open can make you love golf even more. See the best in the world solve all the problems we all need to master any golf course. Golf is a craft and you need fantasy, feel and skills to master it.

I used a Baseball grip 25 years ago because I was arm swinger. Left handed with right hand clubs. My trail hand, the weak one, just couldn't push hard enough with and overlap grip,so I used Baseball. Then I got better and went back to overlap grip. Then I took 2 years off for health reasons and now at 80 years old I'll go back to the baseball grip to get the hands working better, my body is not fast and I am also stiff so I can't rotate that far. Arms and hands is the cure, thanks for the great tips and the "why".

Thanks for sharing your story. I think that many golfers can get help from a baseball grip to learn the motion and be able to release properly. Good job. 👍

Hey Marcus, amazing content and learning a great deal through your teaching. One area that has always been a struggle is level of comfort of my grip to the handle. I tend to apply to much pressure to hold the handle. Partly because of arthritis in my hands. I notice you have a looseness look to your wrists. Can you elaborate a bit on what you feel your hands are doing at address, then once they are in motion throughout your swing? I am trying to enhance my connection to the handle to provide fluidity and natural wrist movement for additional context which I describe below: 1. Maintain a light grip for clubhead "heaviness." 2. Allow the lead wrist to hinge naturally during the backswing. 3. Keep a strong connection between hands and the club. 4. Ensure a smooth transition from backswing to downswing. 5. Let the clubhead guide your post-impact motion. 6. Consistency is key for a refined, repeatable swing and in my view, it is all about the grip to the handle to give any given golf shot hope of producing the intended shot shape🙂

Hi Randal. I'm glad you find value in my videos. Regarding the grip I think we need to be firm and flexible. I like number 3 and 5. In this video I describe what I mean: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5S-V7W5Rh5M.htmlsi=ND-ZLItzVDIR4TWl

Thank you sir! I like your firm and flexible approach! I took a look at the video link and the middle finger of you lead hand have the strongest hold on the grip makes a lot of sense. Your swing is just so consistent in all your videos. You build momentum in your swing which whips the club all the way to the finish. It looks like the weight of the club activates your ulnar muscles of both arms, especially your lead arm, giving you a wider swing. Almost like swinging a hammer, when you pull your hand further away it allows the proper power to build up, then momentum drives the hammer into impact. Do you agree with this? Sort of hard to describe and also do you feel a natural pulling motion on the handle further providing leverage?

Thanks for the explanation Marcus. I like to tinker with my grip to find what works for me. I've struggled with a traditional strong grip and prefer a weaker grip too. I use baseball 10 finger grip. Small hands I feel like I control the club better that way.

I come from hockey background, right handed and play golf from left. My grip and release philosophy sound like yours except my lead hand grip is ultra strong and very much in the fingers. That somehow helps me keep the lead hand passive so my trail hand can pass through in the release, if this makes sense

Not being able to get a still frame close up shot of his grip, it appears to me that Marcus is taking a “baseball grip” not an overlapping grip. Maybe the baseball grip makes it easier for the trail hand to move faster and overtake the lead hand in the downswing. I have always held the grip in the fingers of both hands but never tried playing with the baseball grip. Whatever works is the proper grip for me.👍🇨🇦👨‍🦳
@nokia5359

I tried your grip tonight at the range. Then played hole 1 then cut across to hole 9 and kept going around these two holes. Using different clubs off the tee. Now I found your grip very friendly. I had a feeling of being able to separate pressure and speed between the two. I had more face control and more relaxed. I normally use an interlocking Pinky's. I feel more powerful with the interlocking. But more freedom with your grip.( Does that make sense to you?) I lost distance with your grip but wasn't trying to hit it far. But in the short game shots I had a harder time getting the speed correct and the low point. Fatted alot of short shots. But I'm still going to work with it and practice. I like the freedom it gives me in my swing

@GolfwithMarcusEdblad
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad 10 месяцев назад
I don't know what you mean by trying harder but we need to remove one side at the time. When you practice start with the slice and remove that by releasing in time. When you feel you can do that ten times in a row you attack the hook by extending/scoop your lead hand. One of these are giving you a hard time. I bet on the lead hand. Maybe time for a training video. Let me know which side is hardest to eliminate. Ok?

I went into the rabbit hole of going through your video's and got here via "golf test dummy" who has tried your methodology. I really like your approach. I was wondering about your grip where you explain that you are finger holding the club. I have "upgraded" to Jumbo sized grips and automatically my grip has chanced somewhat. So ... my question is ... do you think your grip would change if you would have a much thicker grip? Thanks for you work and uploads. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

Glad you like my videos. I think that my grip would change with a thicker grip. I've tried Jumbogrips but I don't have bigger hands than normal and it feels awkward. A very strong grip limits a lot of thing, especially how you release the club without to much closing of the club face.

Great stuff Marcus.....you mentioned that your trail hand matches the face angle of the club.With a pitching wedge that would be about 45*....do you change that to almost verticle with a driver ?? Are you changing the rear hand to match the face angle of each club?

I don't match the loft of the club but the leading edge of the club. No change needed between clubs. Straight is always straight.

I've seen significant improvements since I started to use your techniques but I have an exceptionally strong grip. Strange your techniques seem to be working particularly helping me hit the ball straighter. But maybe shouldn't work with a very strong grip......slightly confusing.
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad 10 месяцев назад
If your grip makes it possible to hit good shots, keep it. I need to use a more neutral grip but that doesn't mean that everyone should. If you keep using my tips I think it will slowly go weaker but that will happen over time, don't force it.

Grip is personal to each individual, i truly don't there's no one grip for all, after much experiment over the years, i play with a strong 3 knuckles lead left hand, that's how my hand hangs naturally, right hand faces the target which i feel as the club face. My grip is baseball, couldn't get on with traditional Vardon or overlap Simply find a grip for you as an individual that gives you consistently good results.

Hello Marcus, I went with a strong grip a few years ago (per Mike Malaska) as I transition to your “early release” for the longer clubs, I am wondering if it is still appropriate? I am finding that I am coming from the inside from 10 to 15 degrees and often hitting duck hooks. Perhaps a more neutral left hand grip would be more appropriate? Any advice would be appreciated.
@GolfwithMarcusEdblad

You are correct. A strong grip makes it hard to release the club for more speed. Try to change to a more neutral grip and will work much better.

Your grip, to me, is about as neutral as one can get. I notice your thumb positions do not go straight down the shaft, but on opposite sides. This makes perfect sense with your insight that the trail hand going over the lead hand through impact is what provides the power and speed in the strike of the clubface through the ball. I find that thumbs down the shaft restrict motion in the hinging of the wrists. Good info sir.
