My Insulin Resistance Journey: What is my new A1c?

Today I go to get my A1c levels checked after a full year! As someone with insulin resistance, a history of gestational diabetes, and have had an a1c in the pre-diabetic range in the past, I get so nervous when it's time to do bloodwork during my annual checkups! I am currently still breastfeeding once a day, and there is research that indicates a correlation between breastfeeding and reduced risk for type 2 diabetes so fingers crossed! Watch this video to see where my a1c lands!
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

I have type 2 diabetes so it's a little different from you. I've been really trying to work hard on getting my levels on track after 11 years of it and I've noticed my sugar spikes at 3 hours after meals which is so weird. Tons of tests done before, 1 hour after, 2 hours after and 3 hours after meals but my 1-2 hour tests show no rise in my sugar but on the 3rd it rises like crazy. My levels are much higher than yours are even fasting but typically I sit at around 130-160 before, 1 hour, and 2 hours after but at 3 hours it spikes to 180-200 every day. Either way my levels are super high so it's not great but i've made a ton of progress within the last 2 months since finding your channel. You inspired me! I lost my job in January along with my health insurance and only just got some last month so I was without my medications and insulin (only temporary) for 3 months and my levels were off the chart. I don't even want to disclose my numbers because I was MANY times over the numbers of what should have killed me. I know this is more of a gestational diabetes related channel but I think you've helped inform me on some stuff and seeing you struggle made me feel not alone! Thank you!

What I heard from my endo was A1C numbers on labs can vary a lot. So, if the same blood sample is tested over again, it could vary +- 0.5. So, as you said, these are just numbers maintaining a healthy lifestyle that all matters.

Thanks for your video! It helped so much. I had gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Then my HbA1C was within range until this year which now is prediabetic. The only information and guidance my doc and nurse was change your diet and they will do another blood test and my LDL was higher for the first time and no guidance. So the fact that your doc tell you what type of food to avoid and to increase is so great ! I just invested on lifestyle 2 to monitor and get some more insights. But honestly still at lost on what proper diet to follow what food is ok do I stop eating ha ha I mean it is easy to say stop all sugar food drinks and stop x and only eat veggie and fish and no more bread pasta is that what it should be ha ha I have no idea. I wish there was lots or prediabetic videos but you are off the hook so congratulations my last reading I was 6.1 so not good and I need out and back to normal range asap

I'm so glad you're here! If you've seen my others videos, then you'll know that I also had gestational diabetes with both my pregnancies, even with completely normal a1cs before. Then after pregnancy is when I got my first prediabetic a1c. Yes, figuring out what to eat is SO HARD and it's really different for each person. I totally agree with you that it's easy to say cut out all the bad stuff and eat just the good stuff but it's not that simple and/or easy! I've tried keto, super low carb, intermittent fasting, and honestly I think they all did more harm than good. That's why now I'm trying a more "in moderation" approach. I don't know how it'll all turn out but I'm just doing the best I can, and it sounds like you are, too! Thanks so much for watching.

It’s good that your A1C is 5.6 after eating poorly but you definitely want to get it down. I have insulin resistance and PCOS too. I do a low carb diet where I stay under 40. I do eat a little beans, fruits, potato, etc. I also try to keep it pretty clean. I don’t go out of my way to eat fat. My a1c is 5.2 right now. I went vegan for 6 months years ago. I lost a little weight but my hormones went out of whack. Low carb seems to do the opposite in that sense. Your videos are interesting. Looking forward to more.

Don't worry about your LDL. It's usually high if you're on a keto diet. Dr. Ken Berry's LDL is over 200. There are small LDL (bad) and big LDL (good). So if you have more big LDL then you're good.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад

@carolineyunker9

@@thegoodenoughmama Yes. There are tests to count the TOTAL LDL (which is what the doctor usually orders), SMALL LDL and BIG LDL. I went KETO (Ac1 was 5.8) and now my A1c is 5.5. But my TOTAL LDL went up slightly. It's important to figure out if your LDL has more smaller, denser LDL than the bigger LDL. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LYbPiqO5ZXE.html

That's good you get test results online The system where I am you have to wait 2 weeks to be online. Have to talk to the doctor to get earlier. The idea being you get the analysis, not just a number. Online summary so much better. Maybe you have improved your insulation sensitivity a little if the A1C not quite as bad as expected. Good luck getting it down even lower going forward. Sounds like a few areas that can be further improved with the aim of getting the a1c down
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Wow, 2 weeks is a long time! I would be so anxious waiting that long for my test results. Yes, I think I may have improved my insulin sensitivity at least a little bit. I used to feel a lot of tingling in my hands and feet when I ate higher carb but I don't experience that as much anymore. I definitely hope to turn things around and eat a more balanced diet moving forward as much as possible. A LOT of areas can be improved to get my a1c down more :) Thanks for your feedback and for watching!

@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Hi Rachael! I have stopped using the CGM for now because just like you, it has been very inaccurate. It reads way lower than my BGM and for how expensive it is, I just couldn't justify the cost personally. During my second pregnancy, I used the CGM for part of the time but always made sure to check my fastings with my BGM because I was told that the fasting number is the most important. Hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

Good job on your a1c! I was wondering what was your estimated CGM A1c? I’m also a post GD mama and our story is very similar. A1c for me has never been more than 5,5 but recently got it down to 5,3. My real A1c (before I got pregnant and everything went to hell lol) was 4,5 this is now where I want to be. Have you read about DR Bernstein work ? It’s quite interesting. Also have you noticed your CGM runs higher values than your glucose monitor ? It has been the case for me it’s really stressful I had to stop using the CGM it would constantly give me values 20-35 pts over the glucos monitor especially on fasting level where I would be close to 100 /110 with CGM but glucos monitor would put me on 80/85 (several times…) + confirmed at lab. Good luck on your journey your children are so cute !
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
I haven't used a CGM in a long time, so I don't have an estimated A1c. But interestingly, I have the opposite experience as you where my CGM always ran lower by 15-25 points constantly. So I took a break from them because they are expensive! And yes, I have read some of Dr. Bernstein's work! 4.5 a1c is so great, wow! And 5.3 a1c is also great! Sounds like you have a great handle on what works for your body. Yeah, GD really does a number on the body... we will never be the same again! Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback! Good luck on your journey as well :)

I'm checking my fasting insulin tomorrow as well, turns out that its not 100% indicative if you are insulin resistant or not, if too high you're for sure, but if okish level more investigations is needed. Mine was 10 last time, but lately I don't have any blood glucose spikes so I wonder if I'm finally cured of it? Now with 50gr of carbs my peak is typically around 120-125 and it used to be 150-160.
@user-ij8no5zw6u-
@user-ij8no5zw6u- Год назад
Just got my numbers - indeed the last 6-7 months of keto cured my insulin resistance almost completely! I started with fasting glucose of 95 and fasting insulin of 10++. A few months ago I was having fasting glucose of 80 and fasting insulin of around 10. Fast forward 3-4 more month and now my fasting glucose is still 80, but fasting insulin is down to 4 despite I now eat 100gr of carbs daily. I now can basically deal with carbs now problem as I mentioned. So yes, keto works wonders if done correctly.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
@@user-ij8no5zw6u- Glad to hear you got such great results! My last 3 insulin tests were 4, 2, 6 with fasting glucose of 89, 89, 85, but I am definitely still highly insulin resistant based off of my postprandial numbers after higher carb meals. Just wanted to give you that info in case it's helpful. Thanks for watching!
@user-ij8no5zw6u-
@user-ij8no5zw6u- Год назад
@@thegoodenoughmama Yes I remember that you mentioned that and you're correct - fasting insulin is not 100% proof of insulin sensitivity. The thing is I decided to test it again because I was consuming carbs and noticed that I don't have postprandial spikes anymore. For example just recently I went crazy and ate a whole 100 chocolate resulting in just 120-125 glucose peak. It used to be 160 before. Fasting glucose and random glucose samples are also lower. So keto might not be for everyone, including even me, but its just great to get some result with it faster than any other diet and decide later on how to modify that diet.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
@@user-ij8no5zw6u- love it! Sounds like what you're doing is working great for you!
@user-ij8no5zw6u-
@user-ij8no5zw6u- Год назад
@@thegoodenoughmama I think if anything, that will work for everyone as common sense suggests. The thing is that low carb diets needs to ne modified to fit better everyone's needs and to avoid spiking LDL. I'd pave my way to 100gr of good carbs daily after that low carb period. Also what seems to help a lot during the keto period is to periodically introduce small amount of carbs to keep the wheels working and adapt to using carbs for fuel as well. I did 2 months of keto followed by a 1-2 weeks of moderate high quality carbs. When doing keto long time you seemeingly loose insulin sensitivity when you first try carbs, but after a while you see that its temporally just like after a prolonged fast. You actually gain sensitivity when introducing carbs in very small dosages during the keto period.
