Early Signs of Insulin Resistance & Prediabetes: My Personal Experience

Here we go, another video where I share my personal experience and journey with metabolic dysfunction, insulin resistance, and prediabetes. Looking back now, I can see the earliest signs that something in my body was not working right. In this video I'm sharing all the symptoms of insulin resistance I experienced, past and present.
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

I was feeling really tired less motivated before About 6 months ago, I went for a check-up and was told that I had diabetes. But I told the doctor that I didn't want to start medication and wanted to try changing my lifestyle instead and see. I did a lot of research and started doing light 30-minute whole body workouts everyday. I also started drinking 3 tablespoons of fenugreek on an empty stomach and focused on limiting carbs and sugar while increasing my intake of veggies and protein. Now, my regular fasting blood sugar levels have become normal, range between 75 to 89, without even taking any medication. I highly recommend people to be determined and make lifestyle changes before resorting to medication.

Thanks for sharing your story. I’m very impressed by your proactive approach to manage your insulin resistance. I think the reason why you have insulin resistance even though you’re not fat is because you don’t have much muscle. Most of the glucose we eat is stored in the muscle, so the more muscle you have, the more storage space there is for glucose. So I would highly recommend doing weight training to build muscle. Plus, weight training is high intensity so it uses glucose instead of fat, which is great for lowering blood glucose. In addition to building muscle, weight training is also excellent for building strong bones.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Thank you for your feedback! I do weight training occasionally (it hurts my back when I do too much!) but my workouts are typically HIIT workouts that include mostly body weight and resistance training, which does help me build muscle. But I do find it difficult to gain muscle mass, especially as i get older. Thanks so much for watching!
@justsaying7065
@justsaying7065 Год назад
HIIT workouts are high intensity cardio exercises, not really weight training. While HIIT is good for using up glucose, it’s not effective for building muscle. That’s why you find it “difficult” to build muscle. It’s not because you’re old, you’re still young! It’s because you’re not doing the right exercises for building muscle. To build muscle, weights must be used. Body weight is not enough. You can do weight training at home with some dumbbells or you can go to a gym to use machines. If done properly, weight training should not hurt your back. In fact, if you build your back muscles, you’ll have less back issues because stronger back muscles can take the load off your spine.

This is really interesting. I used to have a high-carb lunch at work every day. I noticed that my heart rate went up quite substantially, sometimes for a couple of hours and I often felt so tired in the afternoon that I had to fight off sleep. Having gone low carb for the past year, I now get none of these symptoms. It's such a relief not to get that afternoon slump feeling.

You are speaking my adult life story right here. I was diagnosed with PCOS at 21 years old. I am pre-diabetic and I am constantly checking my blood glucose levels. I am struggling with infertility and undergoing IVF. Intermittent fasting and eating 4-5 hrs before bed helps me too. If I eat high carbs like rice, I feel it in my ankle the next morning. Also the skin tags are a definite symptom of IR. I had skin tags when I was eating a higher carb diet once I went on keto/ketovore, the skin tags somehow went away. I never cut them off or anything, they just went away on their own. They were also very tiny.

I have had extreme chronic fatigue for a good 20 years, and it would be much worse the morning after running errands all day. Well, a couple months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and since then, I began cutting out sugar and lowered my carbs to around 40 to 50 daily. So now, I noticed that I am fine the next day after I run errands all day, provided I do not splurge a lot on my diet that day while out. If I splurge they come back. In addition to this, I recently bought foods to make sweet treats with that have artificial sugars in them. Well, after I ate quite a bit of the treat I made, the next day I was so fatigued and exhausted that I knew it was from the higher carbs I ate in those treats with zero sugar. So even though these treats did not have sugar, they did have enough carbs to cause my sugar to go up, therefore I had hot flashes as a result, and I was very fatigued the next day too. So even though I was prediabetic for years, I was having the same day after crashes from sugar and carbs as if I was diabetic while I was only prediabetic. So this has been an eye opener. Also, I was in the middle of menopause when diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Cutting out sugar and lowering carbs down to 40 after that completely stopped my hot flashes. On the days I have spurged, I have had bad hot flashes that begin a few hours later and continue through the day and night. So my body is very sensitive, and now that I know it, I can tell easily when my splurge has effected my blood sugar. So I have learned that I have to watch my carbs too.

Thank you for all your informative videos. They help me alot to understand my symptoms. Like you, my doctor could not explain my fatigue, my itchy skin, numb fingers during sleep, heart palpitation etc, even when my HBA1C was 5.9. But I learnt from videos, from non doctors, about my symptoms. I also had those tiny skin tags. What help me to get rid of those tags is eating lots and lots of salads. I eat salads daily for lunches and dinners. I eat salads before my main meals. Like many with pre-diabetes, I mainly eat wholegrains. I hope salads can help your skin tags as much as they have helped me.

I had a lot of those symptoms (numb and weird feelings in my fingers and chronic tiredness, acne) when I was younger. I had no knowledge about nutrition whatsoever and was naturally thin so I ate whatever and whenever I wanted. I probably was almost diabetic (I never got tested at that age). OMG, I have realised that sometimes after eating a LOT of carbs. I wasn’t feeling good at all, my heart will start racing like crazy, and I will have headaches and I thought it was my blood pressure but I realise that it has to do with my blood sugar. Lowering my carbs was a really good way for me to feel good. I haven’t tested my blood sugar yet, since I am trying to make changes in my lifestyle. Now I am eating not a lot of carbs during the day, and I have cut sugar completely, I sometimes crave some sweets but it is manageable. I don’t have any cysts on my ovaries but i have a abnormal hair growth on my chin and moustache, so I think the insulin resistance was hiding somewhere.

Oregano essential oil has worked me. Always use a carrier oil like almond oil. Oregano can burn if you don’t use a carrier oil, but has removed all my skin tags. Just a drop on a q-tip and within about 2 weeks the tags will turn black, shrivel up, and fall off.

@@thegoodenoughmama I wouldn't mix the two. Swab the almond oil on the area first and then swab the oregano oil next. The carrier oil will help dilute and "carry" the oregano into your skin. I didn't realize PCOS includes polyps in the uterus. Since, the O stands for Ovarian. I've had fibroids, and ovarian pains attributed to ovarian cysts but was told it was cyclical. I had no fertility issues, no hair issues, etc, so PCOS wasn't considered. My early IR signs were hypertension in my early 20s, despite being a healthy weight, and very active. It was the days of fat-free everything, and high sugar, and no one connected hypertension with IR back then (I was told it was just genetic because of my dad's hypertension and heart issues). I wish I could go back in time! My husband has neuropathy and the doctor says it's because of an unknown viral illness....but he's a carb addict, with a bit of extra belly weight and skin tags. So he won't consider IR...especially after ONE random bg check was fine, and I don't have neuropathy even though my bg tends to be higher.

Reversing is super slow, but as I mentioned in one your older videos, it's possible, especially having in mind that you're not too much in, you're not a full type 2, nor you're too old to fix it. I'm similar age as well and progressed a lot for the last year.

Even with full blown type 2 it can be reversed and or at least managed and without medicine. Lifestyle and diet plays a huge part. My sister manages hers with keto and it lowers her bp too. It’s not for everyone but shows diet can help.

@@thegoodenoughmama yes it works for me. I take anti-rejection pills because of my liver transplant and it really makes my sugar rise so I fast six days a week 20 hours a day and my sugar plummeted. It really works great for me and then once a month, I do a 24 hour fast and once every three months, I do a 48 hour fast you should give it a shot.

Your entire symptoms is literally same thing I experience. That dull kinda feeling at the feet😒 at one point i really thought i was a full type 2 diabetic until i did the tests. I had these over the years without knowing and they come and go because sometimes i go really low carb without even knowing and i feel fine but then when i start the sweet eating i feel just terrible and those symptoms. Now it all makes sense🥹 Good thing its reversible.

Suggestions to delay the onset of full-blown diabetes (not medical advice): - Avoid prolonged periods of very low-carb diets like keto, as this can lead to the pancreas ceasing insulin production. If you eventually indulge, it may cause erratic responses. - Prioritize muscle building, as it can have remarkable benefits. However, achieving this requires dedicated effort. - Engage in a 10-minute walk after meals, and pay attention to the order of food consumption-preferably fat first, followed by protein and then carbohydrates. - Consider taking metformin for a minimum of six months, followed by cessation.

You're too young to have such symptoms. Regarding Stress: let more things slide & practice 3min meditation etc Sleep : early to bed ( by 10 or 11 to align with the circadium rhythm..) & early to rise. Young children and a busy husband makes it harder if not impossible for sure. Fatty liver: clear it if you have one. I have deeper & longer stretches of sleep, rid of finger joint pain, some bloating and even got rid of 80% of my underarm skin tags by going carnivore ( 60-90days.) Start slow & eat mostly red meat. some seafood, butter & salt. One or 2 stalks of bok choy or a few green beans( they're lower carb and are vegs I like) once in a long while. And I was trying to only lose some weight not expecting those things to even happen. It's an elimination diet but I felt better on them than other ways of eating. Can add foods back slowly if you feel the need to after the 60-90 days . Be sure skin tags are not also from other sources like clothing ( rubbing from scarves, collars, children's arms (just trying to brainstorm :) ) . I revert to my old ways ( husband brings home donuts.. cus I complaint on most nights that I want some sweets like donuts..my bad . And I see 2 tiny ones already starting on my left underarm )
