Is it better to exercise before or after eating? And is it better for your blood sugar to exercise before or after eating? In another blood sugar test experiment video, I'll share with you how my body personally responded when I compared how my blood sugar reacted when I 1) exercised first, then ate a high carb meal, and 2) when I ate a high carb meal first and then exercised. I used my continuous glucose monitor so I was able to see how my blood sugar was impacted for hours, and I was pretty surprised at the results!
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

As you started working out nearly immediately after your meal on day two, it may be that you finished the exercise at about the same time that your blood stream will receive the highest load of the glucose from the digested meal. There no exact best time to start post meal workout. However, there is suggestions that it may be more effective (for blood sugar control) to start post meal exercise 30 to 45 minutes post meal. You could try this on your repeat experiment.
@thegoodenoughmama

Interesting! I had never heard about waiting 30-45 minutes post meal before. Usually, I've read that exercising right after your meal, even for just 10-15 minutes, can be effective in lowering blood sugar. I'll have to look into this more. Thanks!

I have come to realize that exercise after eating breaks a big spike into 2 moderate ones (just like you). I see it multiple times every week. In my understanding, it's the significantly high spikes that contribute towards insulin resistance. Two moderate spikes spread across 3 hours still sounds better than a 90 mins long crazy spike that may drive my metabolism crazy. Thanks for sharing!
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Thanks for this input! I'm curious to know if you've seen what your blood sugar does if you exercise before eating and what your results were! Overall, I found that even though exercising before eating led to a higher glucose spike, the spike came down pretty quickly and my body seemed to burn sugar better for a large portion of the rest of the day. I'll have to replicate this experiment!
@ashwaniKumarAttri
@ashwaniKumarAttri Год назад
@@thegoodenoughmama in my experience, overall impact of exercise before or after in terms of "average glucose level" remains quite the same. Meaning, on a usual day (24 hours) I will end with an average of 5.1 mmol/l (~90 ml/dl) irrespective of exercising before or after meals. It's a difference of high (or long) vs wide spikes. Even when you just have one really high spike every day, you are overwhelming your mitochondria regularly that may lead to resistance. So I am with the after-meal-exercise team. :) Although, it is really important for me to exercise asap after eating otherwise there is no difference between before and after. Thanks!

Keeping insuline levels low is key to manage insulin resistance, eating less often is the key, once or twice a day, stop snacking, excercise very helpful, do fasting , every time u eat creates inflammation in the body, cause of aging and many diseases.

@@seoulkimchi50- this is not true. The best way to reverse insulin resistance and glucose is through fasting. This is why Dr. Jason Fung and Megan Ramos, at The Fasting Method, have been able to reverse type 2 in 1000s of people using fasting (and lower carb diets). They focus mostly on the fasting initially and type 2 can be reversed in many in a matter of months, even weeks.

@@seoulkimchi50 My understanding is that, every time we consume carbohydrates, glucose spikes. So, reducing the frequency of meal consumption actually reduces the frequency of spikes and the likelihood of developing insulin resistance. Fasting and intermittent fasting is credited to combating insulin resistance precisely because it reduces the frequency of insulin spikes.
@seoulkimchi50
@seoulkimchi50 10 месяцев назад
There is a study that shows exercise after meal 30 mins later is best. The reason is if u exercise before meal it does help you to drop down fast but you will still experience spikes esp if u eat food like pizza or ice cream etc. But if you exercise 30 mins after meal, it makes it more stabilise better. So no spikes and have lower blood sugar.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama 10 месяцев назад
Interesting. I've heard it's better to exercise right after. Glucose starts to break down as soon you take your first bite so exercising as soon as possible is supposed to help burn off glucose, thus creating less strain on your insulin response. But who knows!
@seoulkimchi50
@seoulkimchi50 10 месяцев назад
@@thegoodenoughmama I think that's when you drink something. From what I've read, it takes at least 30 mins to actually go through your blood after the breakdowns which is why exercising right after isn't as effective. Why don't you experiment that and then use it as content? That will clarify at least for your body 'when' to work is effective after eating heavy/junk food.

This experiment is probably the most impactful to us insulin resistant people. It isn't just when you do the exercise, but how intense the exercise and duration of the exercise. Type of exercise don't have to be anaerobic like HIIT, unless you enjoy that. Alternatively, aerobic exercises like walking may burn less glucose, but you still burn glucose while burning fat, and it is more sustainable for some people. Regardless which type you choose, exercise will positively impact your blood glucose levels significantly. The most important factor is sustainability.😊

Thank you for the great job on the comparisons. I was thinking about doing some of these myself, just to better deal with my own type II diabetes. One thing I've learned about exercise is that it can actually be more effective to just walk or do gentle weight lifting or bike riding. Intense exercise is not only harder to do, and not reasonable for many people, but it also activates the stress hormone cortisol which can have a negative overall impact on insulin resistance by causing your body to go into fat storage mode rather than letting it burn off the glucose. I get great results by just doing a moderately fast walk on my treadmill after I eat some carbs. I even get good results just rambling along at a slow speed, but have to walk a little longer. According to one doctor I was listening to, there are also some muscles in the lower part of the legs that specifically burn glucose, A person can sit in a chair and lift the knees up and down to activate those muscle and burn off some sugar. You might also want to ask your doctor about your heart rate. That seems very high for having been done with your workout for that long. I had severe atherosclerosis (now mild) from my previous bad diet, and that can happen even to marathon runners if they have a history of carb loading.

In my experience every time I wanted to lose weight I did cardio or HIIT first thing in the morning, and this helped kickstart my fat metabolism for the rest of the day and helped me losing weight fast. At another stage I lost weight lifting weights and eating a balanced diet right after workouts. I worked out 2-3 times a day. I know, this is not a losing weight question, but it gives me hints. Exercise, no matter what, was always there. A friend of mine used to cycle a lot. Now he is not cycling as much, and goes for a fasted ride every time he puts on some kgs and his weight goes back to normal. I think that having the ability to exercise fed and fasted is key to optimize performance, health and weight. If you only exercise fasted you will lose the ability to burn carbs. Hello, I think you have some of the best videos on the topic with great experiments. with regards to the ice cream not spike your blood sugar, could it be that the ice cream is mostly fructose sugar, and it's not being converted to glucose so it doesn't show up in the meter?
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
My understanding is that fructose is sugar mostly derived from fruit. My guess would be that the ice cream I ate has mostly sucrose from granulated sugar and lactose from the milk/cream. Either way, all types of sugars would show up in the meter. Thanks so much for watching!

@@thegoodenoughmama I heard glucometer just detect glucose, not fructose or galactose, an ice cream have a lot of fat that slow glucose metaboism
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama 10 месяцев назад
@@gsaketi1381 A glucometer wouldn't be able to distinguish between different types of sugars like fructose. It is just testing the overall sugar in your blood sugar, which includes the impact that fructose would have on your body. And yes, ice cream does have fat to slow glucose metabolism, which is why I prefer it over something like cookies!

Very interesting content. Recently, my doctor has told me that I am border lining diabetes since my a1c was at 6.5 and was told that I must lower below 6.0 or meds must be administered. Being Korean myself, I find it very challenging to eat Korean food and still watch my carb intake. You really don’t realize how much Korean food in general relies on pairing with rice until you try to remove it from your daily diet. I am fairly fit and over consumption was never an issue nor do I consume sugary products. My fasting blood sugar stays above 100 and can’t seem to get it under. This is after eating rabbit food for almost a month with daily exercise. Weird but I have to say it’s a bit depressing to see your family and friends consume any and everything at a Korean food court and you know you can’t for the foreseeable future. Any advise?

The United states army has all their basic trainees do an extensive work out running etc prior to breakfast and seems they probably know whats best as they've moved hundreds of thousands through the process. I recall losing roughly 20lbs during my 8 weeks at ft Dix(they feed you very well) others actually gain a little weight. When I first started basic I weighed 185 then down to 165 at the end. The guy I had to man carry weighed 185 at first but was 187 at man carry time so here i was at 165 with a 187 lb guy running whatever it was its like a horsy back ride. Bpm varies so wouldn't be too worried my wife is always almost 100 at rest and she is in good shape

Very interesting results. Might have to get myself out of bed before the little one and give it a try. It's amazing what a difference it looks to have made for you for hours after. The spike up and down after the second isn't something you would see without a CGM A no medical or real evidence but personal gut feel is the faster spike returning to baseline is better than a medium prolonged spike for a pre diabetic as long as the spike doesn't go too high e.g under 150. I would think better from an A1C perspective anyway.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Thank you for your input! I'm glad your personal gut agrees with my gut. And about the CGM, yes, it has given me invaluable information how blood sugar works. Previous to using it, I thought that as long as my blood sugar looked ok after 2 hours per my glucometer, whatever I was eating was fine. But my blood sugar most certainly can spike up again after 2 hours.

In general spikes and drops are not ideal, and evidence blood sugar disregulation. Super metabolically healthy people generally do not exhibit large swings because the body is so efficient at storing and using glucose. Reactive hypoglycemia occurs when a somewhat insulin resistant person eats a sugary meal, has a spike of insulin from the body, which then sends blood sugar down too far. This process of going up and down is not good for you.

Waffles are like eating dessert for breakfast. I jog after my breakfast but my breakfast doesn't have any fast carbs. For your size, two eggs, half a cup of buckwheat oatmeal, an apple, and a handful of almonds will slowly increase your blood sugar to allow you to do your HIIT training. Since you're coming from you're night fasting and you don't have a rush of sugar coming in your blood, you still going to dig in your fat reserve during your training.

Can you please tell me how you will check your fasting glucose levels like 8 to 10 hrs of eating or is it greater that 10hrs can you please explained me about fasting blood glucose how can we get it in the normal range
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama 5 месяцев назад
Fasting typically means at least 8 hours but basically, I check mine as soon as I wake up since moving your body can impact your glucose. What works in getting fasting glucose in the normal range is different for everybody, which is why there are so many different diets and tips out there! But what usually works for me is making sure I incorporate exercise regularly into my diet, especially weight training, having an early dinner, and not snacking after dinner.

When normally your blood glucose level started rising, and what time after meal you recommend to start moving?
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
From personal data that I've gathered, my blood sugar starts rising 10-15 minutes after I start eating. Essentially, as soon as we take our first bite, our bodies start breaking everything down. I don't have any scientific data to back this up but I try to start moving as soon as I'm done with my meal. Of course, doing an intense workout on a full stomach will not be good, but as soon as I'm done eating, I get up, starting clearing/washing dishes, put away food, wipe up the counters and table, etc to just stay on my feet. Hope that's helpful!
@mazensmz

@thegoodenoughmama Thanks for sharing info. I think also the type of feed will play a role on the timing of spikes. Drinking calories definitely will spike blood glucose level faster than carbs filled with fibers. Thanks again!

Hahaha yes, being both greedy and lazy with food would be nice. I would suggest you try out the experiment yourself and see what your blood sugar does! Everyone's body is so different.
