Hi! I hope you find this information on my Army enlistment process helpful and/or interesting. Let me know if you have any questions about the steps I took to enlist! Looking forward to starting my career as an Army musician.

I’m SO glad I found this...I’ve auditioned for the Field Band twice previously and am slated to go again a third time, and continue to audition for each service when a opportunity presents itself, just haven’t gotten that coveted “YES” yet 😅over my time going this route in my musical path, I found it’s a good fit for me rather than the wacky hustle of a civilian musician, I just believe so much in what the bands do and prepping for each audition gives me LIFE! I imagine if I love prepping for these auditions, I’d love the job ❤️ My MEPS process is still ongoing and has been LONG...and arduous...and downright annoying but I REFUSE to give up this new dream until the proverbial fat lady sings 😜

Hello, I came across your videos because I was looking for information before joining the army, and it’s just eerie how how much my journey is similar to yours. At my heaviest I was 139 and I’ve lost 20 lbs so far. I also have a wedding where I am maid of honor next May so I might have to wait until after the wedding. Just thought I’d share the similarities and thank you for sharing your journey with us. You are an inspiration ❣️

I'm in the exact position now as you were when you made this video. I leave for basic in January and I'll be playing Tuba and Euphonium.

Just to give you an idea, they changed the AMPA (Army Musician Proficiency Assessment) so that there are no extra points and your prepared music is more heavily weighed than your quickly prepared music. Does't mean you can slack on the quickly prepared packet, just means there's more emphasis put on your personal preparedness. You'll have an incoming assessment (maybe a week after you get there) and an outgoing assessment (graduation requirement). Also, you'll be running into one of my battle buddies down in Ft Bliss. She should still be there by the time you get out of AIT, Colton is a vocalist and she's a treat ^_^

I wish you good luck in your career! Always wanted to be a military musician in US, but I'm a Czech guy so ended in Prague Castle guard& Czech police band. It's not an army band, but police band, but still, very interesting job!

What instrument do you play?!

@@AbbyWeaver Alto sax in the band, but I also study clarinet and before the audition last year, I wasn't thinking about having a saxophone job at all. I always considered myself as a clarinetist who sometimes plays alto sax :D So it changed . Tuba is cool! Tubists in our band also play bass guitar and double bass, it depends on the music we currently play. Do you also play other instruments? There is going to be WASBE conference next year in Prague (festival of wind bands). Somebody told me that some American band is going to perform there , maybe President's own? I'm not sure. In any case, I'm looking forward to listen to them, because American military bands are fantastic and perform on a very high level.

I just finished a degree in jazz performance and im considering enlisting as a musician. Once basic and army music school training is done,what's next? Do all musician's live off base or only married ones?

Why did you choose Fort Hood? Isn’t El Paso kind of a rough town and in the middle of nowhere? Also, did you know any of the regional band’s reputations? Like did one of them have an awesome leader? Were some of them prone to better events/performances based on geography? What criteria was available to you to make that ranking list? I don’t know anything about music or military but find your videos and personality interesting. You’ve got some great years ahead of you and a great plan.

My son joined reserves last summer at 17yrs old then came back to finish his senior year H.S. He has played trombone in school band since 5th grade. He would like to know if its possible to join the reserve band since he has already completed boot camp and meps he is afraid he made a big mistake by not speaking up about joining the army band . Is it possible for him to be able to change course since hes only gone as far as the boot camp and once a month serving ? originally he was going for heavy equipt. operating. any advice would be welcome. Not really. They only let you into the job once you pass the audition otherwise they’ll have you do a different job

As far as I know, yes! You’ll just want to work with your band liaison. They should also communicate with you to schedule an audition when you feel you’ll be ready, that’s how my experience went!

To learn how to sight read just do it. Every day. Pick up a new etude every day and just read through it.

Question, do they require you to be able to read music? I can play a few instruments well, but cannot read music.

Yes you need to have at least a decent understanding in music theory (ie. reading and transposing musical notes). Good luck if you do join!

Only the conductors, librarians, organizers, etc. for the bands can commission. All the actual musicians for the regional bands are enlisted as E4s. In the premier bands, you enlist as E6s.
