I love how neighbours in India keep exchanging goodies with each other. If something special is made in the house it has to be shared with the neighbours and the house help. It goes without saying. It is so heartening to see. My grandmother taught us that we shouldn't return the neighbour's box empty. Atleast a piece of chocolate or some sugar should be kept in it and returned.

Gorgeous video! What a beautiful way of life. I love carrot halwa but have never made it. I will definitely try this recipe when I harvest my carrots (just planted) this coming autumn, as I think part of that flavor you describe is the fresh harvest.

Here in the USA, a lot of the corporate farm veg sold in supermarkets is about looks first and flavor second, carrots and tomatoes especially taste really bland. I'm lucky enough to have a farmers market in my town where I can buy what are known as "heritage" veg, grown from seeds that date back years and years and haven't been messed around with by breeders and scientists looking to produce the "best looking" or longest shelf life product. They may not win any beauty contests but the difference in flavor is like night and day .. definitely going to give the halwa a go, veggies for after's, who'da thought ?

Absolutely

Chetna, since you know the flavor difference between the carrots in India vs the UK, would you choose to add more sugar? perhaps honey?

Not any more sugar than this

Those carrots look so delicious, we don't have very good carrots in the US either, even the organic ones are varieties engineered for shipping and shelf life, not good taste.

I'm going to test, but can I replace cow's milk (allergies) with goat's or sheep's milk or vegetable? Personally, I would sugar less, because I don't consume a lot of sugar! And your mom's Halwa, I really like it. So I'm waiting for your answers, Many thanks to both of you 😍
@FoodwithChetna
@FoodwithChetna 2 года назад
To be honest I have never tried it with anything other than milk. But if I were to try this dairy free then I would go for something like almond milk maybe.

I feel a bit lost. Carrots simmered in milk with added sugar? I've never, in my life, heard of such a thing. Quick internet scan says it's a dessert, but your video suggests otherwise. How is it traditionally used? Side with a savoury main? Snack with tea crackers? Apologies if these seem incredibly ignorant questions.
@Confusedbetweenfoodandfitness
@Confusedbetweenfoodandfitness 2 года назад
It is a dessert to be eaten after a meal. But since we Indians go crazy for them (as it is made during winters usually), we eat it at any time of the day 😅
