You're so right about Bobby's style. It was not a copy of someone else's singing, but he was influenced by a number of soulful singers who predated him. He made every song he sang his own. At that time (the song was recorded in 1968), the expectations of the listening audience veered toward other popular music (Hey Jude, Little Green Apples, the Dock of the Bay, etc.). The country was shaken by MLK's assassination, RFK assassination, the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, ongoing protests and riots, protest songs, etc. The young people foremost all over the world were becoming disillusioned. Demand for show tunes was waning, certainly ballad-style music was slowly taking a back seat. And Bobby's voice was so well-suited for show tunes, modern classical music and ballads. I am glad though that the beauty of his singing is rediscovered and given its proper dues.
