After my last video losing to Ultron and Klaw with Dr. Strange, I got a lot of mixed feedback. Some people thought it was a good idea to finally dispel the myth that Dr. Strange is an auto-pilot hero, and others thought I was being controversial on purpose and arbitrary creating situations to make Strange look bad. This is my followup video to address a lot of what was said and to show how I am earnest in my video titles and content and am not trying to mislead anyone. Thank you to everyone who gave me supportive comments, it means the world.

I’m surprised people pushed back against the idea that the 25 blank card myth exists. It’s been pretty common in the community for years. I’m guessing the haters are pretty new to the community. Not that being new invalidates their opinion, but they certainly need to do their homework before arguing. But, of course, that’s not how the internet works 😅

Love this comment. You see this way too often in everyday life. Just because you haven't heard of something, it doesn't mean you should assume that it has been made up, nor should you just believe everything you hear. A quick run through some old Dr strange Reddit threads would've proved to people that this idea has been around for a while now.

In a game with zero competition, endless replays and a difficulty curve that can serve the needs of an abject beginner and a seasoned all-in collector, people still find excuses to fight over the most trivial of things. I think it’s an example of a lack of self-awareness. Opinions are like ars…. !?!… oh great, now you got me doing it. One of the only issues I have with the MC community at large is that once a hero is declared "bad" for whatever reason (it's "OP", it's not powerful enough, it's boring, it wasn't designed right, etc.), it takes a really long time for the overall opinion to change, and that's *if* it ever does change. Case in point, Thor. Thor took a couple of years before people would - grudgingly - admit that Thor is not the unplayable mess he was originally cast as by the community, and is actually quite good when he is played correctly (my general sense about the original Thor hate is that everybody looked at his kit, saw that it was really similar to Captain America, and then tried to play him like Cap, which doesn't work at all). Now it's finally gotten to the point where you don't get the digital equivalent of a sneer if you say you like Thor, but that took forever to happen. Doctor Strange is the hero the community has held onto its hate for, which I find annoying. As I've said previously, I'm not denying that he's powerful, but I do think it's unfair to have a large chunk of the community telling newbies to the game to not even bother with getting Doctor Strange, because they'll just be bored with how powerful he is. I play almost monthly with a group of guys who mostly don't play the game outside of that, so me and the one of them that does play regularly are basically having to teach the game to them every time we play. They run the same heroes every time, too, so it's not like they are having to learn a new hero as they get refreshed on the game for the month. One of those guys runs Strange exclusively. I don't keep track of our win/loss ratio, but if I had to estimate, I'd say it's about 50/50. Just because you (in a general sense) are an experienced card gamer who knows how to look at cards and get a general sense of how they will interact and which ones should be played at any given time, doesn't mean everybody is. Newbies especially aren't. Strange is really not that easy to pilot if you are new to card games and/or haven't seen him before so you don't know how he works. I can (and have) hand somebody who has never played before an Aggression Hulk deck and say "Hulk Smash" and they can pretty easily figure out what to do with him with minimal questions. That has not been my experience with Strange, where I'm constantly getting questions on how certain things work from a guy who has played the same Strange deck for the past two years. (I'd like to add that I'm not trying to put my group down, they're great guys to play with, and I'm sad that we haven't gotten a game in in the past couple of months due to conflicting schedules. I really don't want people to get the wrong idea, I'm just using them as an example of people who are, for all intents and purposes, perpetual newbies who I think illustrate that just assuming anybody can pick up a hero like Strange and immediately start winning every time is ludicrous.)

Oh man, this is another can of worms to unload. So first off, i completely agree with everything you said, Wasteland. And i didn’t want to add fuel to fire, but I’ve actually had the same experience as you-Strange is difficult to pilot. One of my friends loves Marvel and one of his favorite heroes is Dr Strange. I introduced champions to him and had him play Strange and he hated it. He’s played Cyclops as well and his experience was that Strange is weaker and clunkier than Cyclops who is a very difficult and tactical hero! I appreciate you sharing this experience as i didn’t want to go any further with saying non-positive things about Strange hahaha

@@webwarriorfanatic Me and my cans of worms! I have such a difficult time finding people around me who will try MC that the absolute last thing I want is to have some of the more negative corners of the community turning new or potential players off of the game. This is one of those subjects that I think, unfortunately, at the very least borders that territory. There is a lot of positivity in the community, but there's also some pretty ugly negativity, too. Not to go deeply into it, but I think my history with being emotionally/mentally abused has kind of helped me shrug a lot of that off so I can play how I want to play without letting the opinions of strangers make me feel bad about it. But I can see how that can be different for people who didn't grow up dealing with a similar environment than me. Which is why I will never give anybody crap about their choice of hero, aspect, or deck builds. I think Strange is a lot of fun, but I haven't played him in a while because I've been so wrapped up in using other heroes. Plus, since my one friend in the group is always playing Strange, when I'm coming up with a deck to play in the group, I don't bother looking at the heroes that have already been taken by other members of the group. I'm the free-floating person in the group who is willing to pick any hero and throw together a new deck whenever we meet.

But its encouraging to hear that about your resilience and also just having such a positive outlook for this game and enjoying it in a healthy way. I totally agree with you to that Strange can be fun, and I’m on record that i love playing him in the ‘Pool aspect. Maybe if your friend will budge with a different hero you can finally pilot Strange again haha. It’s so important for our community to not make assumptions and group things together like you giving me the benefit of the doubt and understanding where I’m coming from. From your earlier statements, i in no way interpreted that you hate Strange or anything like that. You just shared your friend’s experience with him which is very valuable to this conversation. Thor isn't best example for your argument. He is still a mess. Just play him without the bandaids he got after the community loudly judged him and outside of aggression. His kit has barely synergies with Justice, Leadership and Protection and when you choose aggression, 30+ cards if the deck are pretty much set in stone. Plus he is definitetly not fun to play gainst villains with no/few minions. A solid hero can we played with all aspects, doesn't need bandaids in the first place and can shine against all villains. I love playing Thor, but man... his design deserves the flak.

A quote someone told me after posting this video: "I am embarrassed at the fails I've had with him to the point of choosing not to post for advice here, and endure the ridicule. No specifics because it's been a while, but we're always playing three player. My warnings to the others about him being OP went laughed at, as we'd get defeated."

This makes me sad. How is anybody supposed to get better at anything if they feel like even asking a question is just going to invite ridicule and no actual answers? I've had the exact same experience with programming "help" forums, where asking simple questions gets you told to "take a programming class" (I'm in one, but I need help, which is why I'm asking the question). Thank God for ChatGPT, which may not always be correct or even able to help solve your problem, but at least doesn't make you feel like an idiot for asking the question. Though I doubt it would work nearly so well for answering MC questions.

Thank you for putting yourself out there and being the one to (proverbially) fall on the sword for this. Strange is good, he's great, he's one of my top 5 favorite heroes to play and I hate the feeling that I get from certain players that "playing Strange is just easy mode". Like, sure, it certainly is easier because some of his invocations actually break the rules of the game(bands not being an attack, and images not being a thwart) but, the game is still the game and it can still get you. Heck, even RNG can have a thing to say about it some times and that alone can ruin Strange's gameplan.

The problem I see with all of this kind discussion is that most of these comments made about Strange are clearly from people who 'feel' that he would win, but don't really seem to state that they have done it themselves. I don't see anything concrete and rather people talking smack. I think it is very true that everyone is saying D-r Strange is OP and I think it is true. It still feels like you are cherry-picking extreme examples of a small minority, which doesn't really need all of this time proving wrong. Strange is somewhat unique in that he explodes all over the place when you pair him with another player and his power is lower when you play solo. He trivializes the game once some allies are on the board, as you can never take damage due to toughs and stun, all the while you never ever have bad turns thanks to the invocation deck. If you still want to hyperfixate on the 25 blanks thing, I would say Strange is the one hero who does best with 25 blanks and it is not even a close call. Edit: I have to say ... I didn't really watch you initial video with the playthrough. I only now checked a few minutes of the fight with Ultron and I immediately had to turn it off after seeing you keep a resource card in hand after the first round. Sigh... listen, you already went out of your way to change the rules of the game, supposedly based on the comments of a few people that provide no proof of concept that it actually works. The least you could do is do your best and try reasonably to do the challenge, which abso-fucking-lutely means you don't keep a single resource card in your hand when you have a deck with 25 blanks! That's just bad sport for what could otherwise be a decently interesting challenge. After seeing that I decided there is nothing left to see. You proved that Strange cannot beat a minion-heavy villain when you are not even trying your hardest to win.
@webwarriorfanatic
@webwarriorfanatic 21 день назад
I hear you. Many people told me Strange can defeat most villains with 25 blanks and people have told me to do it to see for myself… so i wouldn’t categorize it as myself hyper fixating on it. In regards to the game, as i stated in that video as i mulliganed, if i drew into 6 identity specific cards i would be screwed, leaving tons of blanks left in the deck with a huge chunk of my playable cards discarded. The ideal first hand would have been something like eye of agamoto + cape + 4 blank cards. I often do this mulligan strategy in my games where with Spider-Man I’ll keep Spider tracers and Webbed Up as resources turn 1 if i already have cards i want to play like Nick Fury. You can say I’m a bad player or that’s a bad strategy, but it’s unfair to say i didn’t do my best or imply i was being disingenuous. I have missed plays forsure but never purposely tanked myself to lose.
@martintomov7576
@martintomov7576 21 день назад
@@webwarriorfanatic out of 40 cards, you have about 4 cards that you would absolutely love to have as soon as possible and like 4 events that you would not mind. The rest is nothing on turn one. It makes perfect sense to be as aggressive about finding these as fast as possible, which means tossing every single blank. Chances are you would not end up with many of these in your hand. Chances are you would not end up with even 3 of them. If you do find some of those cards, you can keep them in your hand because the alternative is ... nothing else really. It is not a typical game to follow typical rules when you absolutely need to be tossing all cards from your hand in hopes of finding the 5 cards that can potentially help you stand a chance, even if you are not able to play them in one turn. And if not for the mulligan, then at least at the end of round 1. Anyway... I feel like this topic is wasting resources and time. I checked the reddit thread and notice talk about the myth originating from someone doing this as a challenge. If there was a content creator who did it, that should be a good starting point to see whether the idea hods any value. Any other talk is all about "could/should", "do ok", "still win" (without clarifying against what), etc. I stand by my opinion that this is by no means a definitive statement and that if there is an origin of the myth, it should likely be traced rather than trusting random people's opinion on the internet being any valid. I would like to point out the fact that most people (you included) with half a decent knowledge of the game needs to preface their "agreement" with you by saying "Yes, D-r Strange is a super-duper-ultra-powerful hero, but...." does show that Strange is a bit of an anomaly in the game. That some people take his power to extremes is of little regard. I could toss a few random cards and go with any aspect with Strange against some of the heaviest hitters and not break a sweat. Now, I would not like getting hyperfixated on the word 'overrated' here, but I would say that he cannot be really overrated when everyone is agreeing he's top tier. I also find it very strange that people feel the need to derive some sort of negativity from such discussion, namely in the form of feeling bad about not using the hero right. I would argue if you are losing with him and you come forward with it, you will find much more interesting discussion on why he is not ideal in solo and how to overcome that. What he is actually weak against and why he is exponentially more powerful in multiplayer than alone. If you look on the internet you will find plenty of praise about pretty much every hero, including Mr Hulk. Does that mean you should never ask why you are losing with any of them, even those rated highly?
@webwarriorfanatic
@webwarriorfanatic 21 день назад
@@martintomov7576 I’ve seen time and time again people asking if Strange is that good or sharing their experience saying it wasn’t an auto-pilot, and commonly seen “if you aren’t dominating with Strange, you’re playing a different game.” Many new players get attacked if they imply in any way that they didn’t find Strange to be amazing and that’s why so many players are coming out and telling me that they feel bad for it. In regards to the strategy with mulliganing for identity specific cards, you’re arguing something beside the point. I’m not saying my strategy is the best and you’re wrong. You seem to be implying my strategy is not optimal which is entirely fine, but in your first comment you implied I disingenuously tried to lose that game. I was only explaining how that’s not true, not trying to convince you my strategy is good. If you don’t think this discussion warrants our time, that’s okay. Feel free to not engage in it. @@webwarriorfanatic when I said you are not even trying your hardest to win the challenge, it is exactly what I meant - the only mathematically viable thing to do with 25 blanks is to be as aggressive about the cards you cycle and hope you find one of the good ones among the heap of nothing. There is no point in keeping blanks, ever, because they don't make a difference. I actually appreciate the back and forth but I don't think we are getting the same takeaways from it. There is some bits of points to be made about how Strange is only good if you meet a few simple requirements and not always, but besides that it feels like we are infantilizing the audience that for some reason automatically believe he is a reason they should not play the game, or that there is a problem with them if they cannot score a win with him. If I go on some movie critics website right now and check out the top-rated movies of all-time, chances are I am not even going to like all of them. Should I then feel bad about myself and think that something is wrong with my taste in movies just because there are great many people telling me something is good and I don't see it this way? I find this notion very strange and I think only a minority of people will ever find fault within themselves. Why should the case be different here is beyond me and why is it such a major issue that there is talk about Strange being very strong. Also I still think this is a very weird thing about the 25 blanks and the best thing to do is to track this challenge that someone did. If that is the origin of the myth, it definitely warrants further investigation, apart from just taking what folks are pretty lukewarm about with that much certainty. If anything, the way you want to prove Strange is overrated seems counterproductive to me. Putting him to impossible standards only further strengthens the notion that something is off about this hero and that to even attempt such a thing speaks volumes about his power level in the game.

I'm not really sure how your content can be taken as 'click baity'. Because even if you did come up with this challenge yourself (which you haven't), all you're doing is proving that Dr Strange is not some auto pilot god. I'm not really sure what is controversial or click bait about that. I think you're actually quite a genuine person and you're just giving evidence to help state your opinions. To me that should be welcomed and used to create further constructive discussions. I really hope you keep doing content like this, because its good to have peoples opinions challenged (especially one like this, as tbh it's mainly from online discourse people believe Dr Strange is this powerful). My personal experience of Doctor strange is that I have actually always struggled with him. I find Spectrum (a hero that I think is underrated) to be far more constant. I follow you since your very begining with Miles, and all your gameplay videos are interesting to watch, because like DescryGaming, you push the limit of "theory", and put everything you have in mind in practice. People might get offended by the result, but that's their ego, and universe care very little about that. You show what we can do with hulk, what we can do with spider man or bishop, like Descry for Valkyrie or Black Widow and that is just food for thought. I like theory video such as villaintheory channel, but they are still that : theory. What matters is deck building, piloting, and most importantly: play the game how you feel. Discover tricks, applying smart moves, etc. People who claims that Doctor Strange is boring, I can understand. But people who claims that Doctor Strange is easy mode for weak gamer have very little understanding of theory, or game design IMO, and very little respect for players of Marvel Champions. And that is because they don't put into application their own ideas. Sorry for long message, but I have to put out of my chest: people should stop harass good content creator, because their ego is insulted by the conclusion of a material experience.

@@webwarriorfanatic Yeah, I'm starting posting more messages recently, to fight my fear of social networks, but I'm only posting on the channel I feel "comfortable" with, like yours. In example: I hear "everybody" says that "enhanced basic" upgrades are "bad". And in theory, I agree. But my practice brought me to the conclusion that they are good with Black Panther. Because he has a lot of double, and sometime hands full of wakanda forever. With BP, I can convert a single Double Resource card into Shuri who fish for an enhanced upgrade but not for a support. I can also convert a double resource card into an enhanced basic upgrade, in the mood of "web shooter". This way I can mitigate awkward turn that BP might face, and I can spam lots of wakanda forever without having to "spend one" to "pay the other", thanks to the enhanced upgrade. But that is my practice, my own experience, and that is why I always run a copy of enhanced upgrade in all my Black Panther deck. if I say that on social network, people will bash me for sure. Because theory/ego etc.

@@alberttaco3668 i feel you and I’m glad you feel comfortable sharing that here. In regards to the enhanced upgrades, i agree they are generally inefficient but they have saved my butt multiple times-i like using enhanced reflexes with Miles for consistent Venom Blast Web Shots. I haven’t tried it with Black Panther, but id agree that it sounds very handy to convert Vibranium to on board resources, that’s an awesome idea. The majority of the Marvel Champions is extremely positive and supportive and i hope one day you will share your experiences with the game with more people and that people will hear you out with an open mind :)

@alberttaco3668 I'm actually a fan of Resourceful. It's a great card in a Nova deck. Certainly not a card I'd put in every deck (or even most decks) but can be very useful in the right decks. Which I think makes it a way more interesting card than the "staple" cards.

@@wastelandsniper789 thanks for chiming in! Yea resourceful is a card that’s not efficient at all on paper, but it’s really interesting and i can see situations where it can work

Well said and well presented! I heard the 25 blanks years ago and that he “only needs the invocation deck.” These were needed videos for the community and Dr Strange. This has actually made me want to play him more now. Thank you!!

Love your conclusion about not discouraging new players with comments like Strange being OP, Hulk being unfun etc. By far the most important aspect of all these discussions is community building. The game has a decent sized one but not very big. What you're doing with all these videos is a huge contribution to the community, so please never feel like you're not doing good work.

Thank you so much Sven. I always enjoy reading your comments and am grateful for them. Hopefully we can build this community up to like MTG level or something 🤣🤝

You are correct. It is possible to be the best and still be overrated. People just like to complain about other peoples opinions. Keep up the great content.

the best way to enjoy any game is to take other people's opinions with a gigantic boulder of salt i kept seeing a lot of posts/videos talking about how bad hulk was, then i decided to "challenge" myself into beating some difficult villains with him, since i was having too easy of a time with my favorites managed to defeat expert magneto in 3/5 games using a leadership deck that only had cards from the 1st and 2nd cycle, when i added professor X to my deck, i won the next 4/5 (lost one because i misscounted lethal and threated out of the game with an advance :)

Dude that’s amazing Rick! He was difficult enough with Suit Up but that’s insane feat. I’m glad you didn’t listen to the sentiments because I’m sure that was an awesome experience. Thanks for commenting and sharing that :)
