I wonder what kind of damage this did to the small time actors careers who worked in this. I can't imagine the cult of scientology, with all its tentacles in Hollywood just turn a blind eye to them partaking in this doc.

I love the artwork/fonts for this film. I knew Ralph Steadman provided the artwork;just the lettering alone is distinctive and chaotic. He used to work with Hunter Thompson and provided some paintings for Hunter’s writings.

I have been watching Louis Theroux documentaries since I was a child. He's awesome. However, this documentary was a bit of a disappointment. I would recommend watching Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison Belief over My Scientology Movie.

I'm a little disappointed in this documentary. It's very surface level. But it says something that Louis can talk with Neo-Nazis but cant talk with Scientologist.

he did the best he could I guess, since he was never gonna get inside the church. I wonder if Marty the director realizes he's the actual subject of the movie.

I actually think scientologists core beliefs are real. I mean idk about the name xenu, but the concept of prison planet resonates at a deep level with me

One thing Scientology has had trouble living down is the interview of L. Ron Hubbard in a 1980 issue of Reader's Digest. (It's famous now.) He told the Digest, "You want to make a million dollars? Just invent your own religion..."

I just came across this movie on hulu... so awesome. I have known several scientologists. They go in ok... but shortly after are completely broken. Hubbard was a loony who's own shortcomings were so torturous to him he built a new idea of life through his psychosis and mental illness. Like attracts like... he brought so many mentally injured people who the organization has fed off of for decades. They feed off of the desperate and the lost. Like the saying goes, there's no non smoker who hates smoking like an ex smoker... so too ex scientologists have a deep felt hatred for the organization... and so do I. I may have never been a part of it, thank God, but I feel deeply for the people, both active and ex members.

Reasons I didn’t like this documentary: -It didn’t offer anything new in terms of information on Scientology -I don’t get the acting angle, just to recreate footage that’s already available -Seemed more like a documentary about Marty Rathburn, who doesn’t come across as a trustworthy source based on his odd behaviour and combativeness, if the documentary was about him, it should’ve been about him -We’ve all already seen Tom Cruise acting weird -No mention of John Travolta or Battlefield Earth

I've just watched this documentary and it's absolutely brilliant! Louis Theroux has certainly got balls interfering with that organisation! I would also like to give full credit to everybody who participated in this great documentary 👍👌!! Unfortunately on the downside after watching this I've now lost alot of respect that I once had for Tom Cruise knowing that he is a part of this cult 😟😭

I tripped when I first watched this. I had a hard time for about a week really wrapping my head around how utterly bonkers this cult is. A science fiction writer wrote a manuscript in the 50s for self-help, and it became a practicing religion... read that again.

You know what is even STRANGER? This movie is not allowed to be shown in Ireland because of Blasphemy Laws created in 2009. I've watched, read and engaged with several things involving or discussing Dianetics, L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology, and the Church of Scientology. However, this was the first documentary that really made me dislike David Miscavige's Church.

And you can definitely tell, Rathbun knows some awful shit. He's carrying this heavy weight on his shoulders. Like that guy said, he knows where the bodies are buried. And you can see his guilt about this. Maybe this is his way of trying to get rid of some of his guilt. I can't even imagine what it would be like to spend 20 days, let alone 20 years around these people. I can't imagine it, because I don't have the ability to push aside rational thought, and go on faith. But, I can see how if this is what you are surrounded by, constantly, the brainwashing would happen relatively quickly.

Marty is somehow back in and worse than ever.

This trailer hyped up the movie, and the editing really misrepresents actual scenes of the movie. That guy that says "do I look brainwashed to you?" is actually an ex-member, and right before says "Yes it is a cult." Disappointed by the documentary, ended up being really boring and sad...

Shame, Marty is back inside :(

It's so difficult to make a boring movie of this capable idea. I got bored and skipped much of it. I think the other films about scientology are much better. Even leah remini project.

Louis Theroux did not know if he was making a documentary or a movie. I'll refer to it as a movie because it fails miserably as a documentary; it's unorganized and confusing. Little to no specifics are given behind why former members were being punished.

I just finished watching this. I have seen many things Louis has done. This was quite boring on a subject I find interesting. A large portion of this is just him auditioning actors and going over lines. Try several other options before wasting 90 minutes on this one, far from informative.
