Refried Beans are an essential part to every day Mexican cooking, whether they are beans de la Olla or refried, they are enjoyed almost daily. Refried beans are so easy to prepare when you have the right ingredients…I’ve always thought that my mothers beans are simply the best, they really don’t require a lot of ingredients to prepare, and I really think that simple is better. Beans are delicious when seasoned well, and many people add a variety of ingredients, but I think that the best flavor comes from a smoked ham hock, onion, garlic and salt then refried in bacon grease, that simple. I have a simple recipe that will make the best beans and I hope you give it a try. ❤️

INGREDIENTS FOR COOKING PINTO BEANS----
2 Lbs Pinto Beans
1 medium size Smoked Ham hock
1/2 Small Onion
1 xtra Large crushed Garlic Clove
Salt as needed
Water to cover beans and Ham hock by 1 1/2 inches
REFRIED BEANS----------
3 Tbsp Bacon Grease
4-5 C. Cooked Beans
1/2 C bean broth
1-2 tsp Chicken Bouillon tomato flavored (optional)

I never get tired of watching Rachel cook! I love to watch her and always learn something new. Even if it’s a dish I know I will never make, I watch every minute of that video. Her taste test is the best! 😂 She’s such a joy to spend time with. 🥰❤️

I dont know exactly where you live but I want to be your neighbor!! I appreciate your videos so much! I am 45 and have never been able to make good flour tortillas UNTIL i watched one of your videos and it finally clicked! My kids actually enjoy eating my flour tortillas now instead of throwing them for the dogs to catch.

There was a restaurant called Moderna’s in Piedras Negras, MX. The best refried beans, I’ll say, ever. My gringo uncle asked them the secret. They were finished off in the oven. I told my friend from Colorado how good my gringo mother’s beans were so good. I said mom used a crock pot. My friend said, yes, never let them boil. I use Goya beans only. They use a 10 min boil/set. I know from experience, soft water really helps beans cook better and remain soft and not bust open. It’s true abt the lighter bean. Learned that by default too. I love her vids. BTW, I was raised in Eagle pass, raised in quemado Vally, Maverick County. I love Tex-Mex. My gringo grandmother had a restaurant. All of her food was from scratch. I bought a can of enchilada sauce last week for a family. I’d never even bought a can. They like the Taco kits. Bless their heart. As long as they pay me, I’ll cook what they want. 😊

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your channel! More than the recipes you have taught me the lesson of slowing down and having patience. I've never been a patient cook or baker but when I watch you, you make it so obvious why slowing down, being prepared and beginning in a clean kitchen is most important. Right now I am making the apple fritters, the apples are cooling and I imagine this is what heaven smells like.By the way, I love the Mexican word for mortar! I keep saying it to myself. Best of luck and thank you! Also I'm 66 this year, have made thousands of meals,and still learning something new!

I made a pot of frijoles de la olla, no hamhock, so when I refried them for breakfast this morning, I fried one slice of bacon. When that was finished I added to that bacon pan one ladle of whole beans, added a little cooking liquid and cooked them for a while. Then I had to put them in the blender because I don't have a cast iron skillet. I pulsed it once and they were amazing. Thank you, Rachel.

I find it difficult to use ham hock. I boil it too before using it in collards, black eyed peas, cabbage, snaps, etc. But it’s hard for me to get the right size meat for the “liquor”. The butcher will cut it any size I want. If it’s not “tasty” enough, I’ll use Goya powdered Jamón. They have low sodium powder now. I’m still debating it. Lol😂

You have become one of my favorite cooks to watch on YT. You explain everything so well and I just love the fact that you live in OH and Texas. I lived in Texas for 3+ years and grew up in OH. I was in TX with my husband until he passed away with cancer, then moved home to OH to be with my kids. Living in the Hill Country was awesome and miss everything especially the wildflowers. Hermosa! Now these are the frijoles that I remember from my childhood! My mom would make them with bacon instead of a ham hock, they were delicious! Rachael you probably would laugh how this here woman from New Jersey makes fried beans. I take 2 cans of beans put them in a fry pan with garlic and onion and fry it all up. So from now on I will make it correctly, what does this Irish woman know. Thank you my lady I just learned something

Made these today to go with the arroz con pollo. Had to do a pre-dinner taste test of a bean and cheese burrito. Planned on just eating half and saving the other half for my hubby. He’s asleep on the couch, so you snooze you loose! 😂 Delicious recipe! Thank you!
