In this episode I talk about how I converted my Specialized Stumpjumper Evo to a Mullet. But not only am I now running mixed wheel sizes, but I also replaced my stock wheels with Berd Spoke's unique TR30 Wheelset. Watch to find out if I think this big money commitment is worth it..

Doing the mullet setup today on my new 22 Evo Pro. Yesterday was the first ride with an Oval sprocket which I run on all of my bikes. What a difference! You should try one

Ya know, I’ve been pretty curious about trying one of those oval chainrings for a while. My buddies really like them. I Might have to get on that soon.

Hey mate, interesting and entertaining video. Thanks! The Stumpy Evo was also offered in a Ltd. version which was a stock mullet. I (181cm) am riding one of those for a few months now. It's a very playful bike and the slightly heavier Roval stock tyre has great grip. I think that a disbalanced wheel weight is a disadvantage in ... riding balance? The stock Evo mullet is playful, stabile, versatile and in S4 still similar to a greyhound bus ride. It's a killer version of the pinkbike bike of the year. In my eyes even a better enduro than the Enduro with the Zeb fork. Bike park, trails, tours, jumpline... I love it. PS: Subscribed!!

Oh man I used to race in Michelin’s in 1998, They were the first ones to bring racing flats to MTB. They were green and damn fast too. Bagged 9 podium 1’s on Michelin’s. Pretty certain you will know the difference.

Hilarious! I've been watching a ton of reviews recently as we're looking for a new bike and your review was hands down the best. Any chance you have a few comments on how the Specialized Stuntjumper Evo mullet compares to the 2022 Bronson? Well done.
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
Hey thanks for the kind words! I’m sorry tho, I can’t really comment on the Bronson because I haven’t ridden it. Beautiful bike. Just a quick glance at the geo chart and it looks like the Bronson’s numbers are in the ballpark of everything I look for in a bike that’s straddling the line between trail and enduro. You can’t really go wrong with either bike. The difference will be in the ride feel which you won’t know until you ride both bikes. From a spec/value standpoint I’d just say that specialized is pretty hard to beat.

It's not the lighter wheelset that makes you use a smaller cog in the climbs but the 27.5 rear that changes the gear ratio, difference is similar to subtracting 2 teeth from the chainring. Lighter and smaller wheels do however help accelerate faster.
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree Год назад
Totally right. Another commenter brought this up and I felt like a dumb dumb for not considering it myself first.

I'm running Michelin's Wild Enduro in 2.4" width on my 2017 27.5 SJ. They are insanely good!!!! I'm totally sold on these F&R-specific tires. They have great grip in all but the wettest, muddiest conditions, at which point I'd rather not ride and just go to pub for a beer.

Thought that rear tread looked a bit timid for that bike, but you ride hard pack. You confirmed my prediction a few minutes later in the vid. I always run Maxxis Minion DHF/DHR EXO combo after messing around with Spec's tires for years on my Enduro and Stumpjumper. As soon as I went tubeless, Spec tires would always have slow air leaks. Almost never have to touch the Maxxis tires and they wear better and the casing is really tough. They are heavy, though. Look forward to the long term review of the Michelin combo. Ran Mich Wildgripper for a couple of years back in the 90's.
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
Yeah that rear was a bad call on my part. My terrain definitely has hard pack runs but the trails I ride that matter the most to me are quite soft. It’s tough to gauge the tires by the pictures online… live and learn. Hope you’re doing well Pete!

Hey bro, I really enjoyed your video. I'm also thinking of going mullet on my Stumpy Evo. What's holding me back is the reviews on the specialized website on the mullet suspension link. Some people are saying that it ruins the kinematics. The rear becomes too soft and bottoms out more frequently. Have you experienced that?
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree Год назад
I haven’t experienced that. I set my suspension tune through the calculator on the specialized website and it was an excellent starting point. I’ve made minor tweaks from there and I have no complaints about the rear suspension.

Look up the wrp mullet link. Little bit more expensive but its a yoke so you keep the stock 29er link. You can even run a cascade link with it if you want. Solves that problem alot of people complain about. Also ive heard you wanna run about 25% sag instead of 30 and that helps

Looks sick! I got the 2022 evo expert and the hub is way too quiet for me... for trail riding I like people being able to hear me coming on descents. I think the only real upgrade this bike needs is a new wheelset. Seems like there are tons of customizations with the cascade link available + mullet link. Also the high/low flip chip is amazing! So easy to change it even trailside. Do you have any other upgrades you've done that you recommend?
@ShreddingSpree

Just an fyi on your: uphill in a lower cog, in addition to your points you will have a slightly altered gear ratio due to rear wheel diameter change.

No one talks about it 🤷🏼‍♂️ I suspect 29er is the main reason sram etc started pushing 12s. My other fun ‘no one thinks about it fact’ most suspension design is developed for a specific tooth chain ring yet brands never state that “this frame is designed for” and so people don’t realise their are consequences to changing up or down… anyway, nice solid review, I’m sure you’ll get some free wheels if you keep the quality up!

I have a 27.5 Stumpjumper, changing the front suspension and wheel for a 29, would it become a Mullet (even with a higher cost than just changing a link and a rear wheel)?

@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад

Hmm this is so interesting. My buddy and I each ran a back to back lap with the mullet and 29 wheel. Both of us felt the bike became unmanageable with the mixed wheel size. It was super squirreley and lost all traction. Did you have to do much to your suspension to dial it in? I would assume it was just me, but with my friend having the same result I’m wondering what we did wrong haha
@ShreddingSpree
@ShreddingSpree 2 года назад
I left my sus settings the same. In the video I note that the rear felt more loose with the mullet setup but I’m pretty sure it was the tire. I’ve got only a handful of rides on my new rubber and I’m feeling like it’s staying hooked up better now. Jury is still out though. What were your geo settings when you rode it?
