My Supra Engine Failed in 30 Miles

What alternate world am I living in? Rob Dahm has a car ready to race and Rob F. has a dud.

The way it turned up on the trailer said it all. PAS fluid all over the place, flat tyres and straps that wouldn't be rated to hold the hood down (which used a bungee instead), let alone the car. No respectable tuner would ever allow it out of their shop like that and certainly wouldn't send it to be raced like that. I'm honestly amazed they even allowed that thing on track. The fluid leak alone would mean no driving at any track I've ever been. No roll bar, harness, fire suppression or any other safety would be a few more no's at those power levels. I've said it on every video of this build - take that thing to someone else who can do it properly. Those guys are back street garaging with big power and sooner or later thats going to bite you. This time it was an engine but like I said before - how long until its something safety critical or a failure at high speed? Its fine to blame the machine shop with no evidence but the reality is it ran and made high power numbers for a number of hours so its unlikely to be a machining problem. Its much, much more likely to be a tune problem - especially since you went twins which is unusual. Do the "tuners" know the rod/piston/crank/bearing pressure limits? Was that even taken into account? I have a feeling it was more like "the lambda/mix looks ok so its fine". Even that massive torque spike in the first pull looked very sketchy from a tuning pov. Much harder and sooner than the usual big single and that might well be what ultimately did for it. Either way please send it to someone who will do it professionally and properly. I don't want to read your obituary over cheaping out on a builder. On a lighter note I think you should get an R34 to go with this. Those two together really did look cool.

My issue is he could have easily sent the Supra to a shop in Florida and had a good engine. Rob has to many connections to be dealing with this type of nonsense.

I might be making assumptions here, but from what I understand the engine wasn't broken in after assembly. Could that have been a factor?

Today, Mr. Spaghetti is upsetti that the pasta chefs overcooked his fresh meatball.

For people wondering, the engine builder is known for building motors that dont last long. 100% a machining issue. If you look at the first video you'll see the inside of the engine has red paint in it, which is that particular machine shops signature. dozens of motors have been blowing up over the years from that specific machine shop.

Skyline and Supra prices just baffle me, 2016 I paid £5000 for an N/A-T Supra, sold it 2017 £6000... friend with an R33 GTR paid £15k for his, R34's were always around the £30-40k mark, now they are just silly, not worth it in my opinion.

Rob I'm a massive fan, but I feel like you get continually screwed by the shops that work on your vehicles. I'm not sure if corners are cut or what's going on, but dang man you've had some piss poor luck.

Spaghetti blows his Supra engine and grabs another car, Trevor from MotionAutoTV rod knocks his Supra engine and buys another block and fixes it within a day (with help). This says a LOT . . . I'm just saying . . .

Who would have thought a rush build would have failed.... Rob... I'm pretty sure, everyone saw failure written all over this build... with regards to this Vegas Trip. Yeah... it might not be serious I guess, but you are saying it's seized... so I'm not hopeful. What had me a bit stunned, was who gives a brand new built engine, one dyno tune and then tries and races full tilt...? Only someone who doesn't really understand tuning a highly strung engine. If the engine has detonated, then that tune was probably the cause... not a badly built engine... that's my guess. You must show us a video, showing the tear down of the engine... or at least the damaged parts and what the cause was... from the engine builders point of view... Not just a video you make and throw claims at us... I love Supra's... I wanted this to be a nuts awesome quick built Supra, and you to rip shit down at Vegas... but all the time I knew it was never going to race... you can't rush this stuff Rob... you have to go carefully step by step and have a good tuner... and if it is a bad engine builder... then a tried and trusted engine builder. Time is your friend with these builds and the key to success... you never gave time a look in.

Cheap out on things now pay double later to do it right. You seem to be tripping over a few nickels to try and save a few dollars. Pony up and pay what it costs some times. Give Jay a shout at Real Street. Buy once, cry once.

As one who hauls cars for a living ( 9 to be exact), that's some shady way of strapping a car down. U can do better than that. And u shipped on an open trailer! Might want to look at the other rob & his set up. Be interesting to see if the machine shop takes responsibility for the engine blowing up with less than 30 miles on it. Was it not set up for boost ??

That's a sad one. That happends when you are in hurry to make things. Faliure probably will be completely unrelated to 1000hp, but will be some stupid mistake during shortblock assembly. Likely something oil-pressure related, because it's seased and just in under 30 miles.
