My sister had a baby as a teenager. I was only one year older so a teenager myself. Over the years, my mom and I both made many sacrifices to make sure my niece was loved and cared for as my sister struggled with addiction and financial problems. So many friends and family members criticized us for helping as much as we did. We lost my sister very young from drugs but my niece is now a happy 40 year old mother of 3 amazing kids. Taking care of my niece was the right thing to do, and so worth the sacrifices we made to get her through her childhood. Hopefully the caller's kids will come through as good parents, but she can definitely make a difference in the life of her baby grand! Looking back now, I got so much more from my niece than I ever gave to her. She is such a special lady.

A good outcome is always possible. My sister had a baby at 16 years old and as significant as it was to hear that she was pregnant, our family needed her baby more than he needed us. Once he was born, most significance (that we could see as children) was out of the window because both sides of the family fell in love with him and pitched in to help raise him. He always had more than enough due to family support. My sister went on to get her college degree in Criminal Justice and she's been in law enforcement for over 25 years. My 33 year-old nephew has been married for 8 years and has 3 daughters. He was the best child and the epitome of harmony for us. Because we were so young, he was like a human toy, which helped my sister out because we were babysitting when we didn't realize it. I realize now how noble my parents were to accept my sister's situation and to steadily encourage her to get her college education. Teenage pregnancies don't always have a negative outcome, especially when the family is solid.

What a beautiful outcome! I had a classmate this happened to. I am so proud of how her parents handled it(I know that had to be rough and her Dad was furious, rightfully so). I didn't understand her shame at the time, we were 16 when she had her baby. We were excited for her(dumb of us) but none of us were shaming her(to my knowledge). The story is long, but both parents are together and have been married for over ten years and there are two younger siblings. Just a beautiful love story!

I really loved the spirit of Dr. Delony’s counseling. We can’t control the fact that the baby is due in 1 month. We’re already here. I just love that the conversation shifted to excitement and embracing this baby so they don’t have to suffer under the weight of what “could have been.”

This is really good advice and a good starting point. He didnt touch on finances and the running of a household with 2 teens and a baby. Who is going to support this baby and the 2 teens? Yes , its great to have a new baby but boundaries need to be drawn early on. She is going to be welcoming not only a grandkid but another teen who grew up in a dysfunctional home. Teen couples with a baby fight. A lot. Not so simple. I would suggest counseling for both the teen parents, maybe joining a teen support group. This lady is not equipped to take on all this responsibility on her own as the other grandparents watch from a distance and just visit and spoil the baby.

A support system for these kids is what’s going to keep them on track in life. I had a friend in hs who had 2 kids at 17 and 18, and nearly 20 years later, she is still with the same guy with 2 functional kids and a successful life because her family was there to guide them through.

My dad had me at 27 years old, he and my mom we’re together for 9 years. My paternal grandparents shamed my dad and even scheduled an abortion for me. Both families were wealthy so that wasn’t the issue. The issue was that they were not legally married. My grandparents also didn’t help my parents get married. My dad had just graduated as an engineer so he would be able to support me, unfortunately he passed away when I was a year old in a car crash. My dad dies feeling shamed for having me and most of his friends and relatives only heard about me in his FUNERAL... that’s the lesson here... my grandparents asked my mom for forgiveness on the funeral... and my dad was the only child...

That’s great you had a good outcome. That’s because your mom was mature. It was also a generation ago. The outcome will be determined by the level of their maturity and the amount of support they receive from their families. There are a lot of risk factors with theses families, ie, alcoholism. Divorce, and ambivalence that puts the baby at higher risk, but it doesn’t mean they can’t be successful in raising their baby. This grandmother needs to step up and get some therapy about this adjustment that’s hitting her life, otherwise, All of their unprocessed wounds will get transferred to the baby.

His story of the pregnant girl 🥲 I’m so glad dr John was there at the time to help open her eyes to what a beautiful gift she was blessed with! It may not have been planned, maybe the guy didn’t support her and stick around but she got the better end of the deal. She got the beautiful baby and whoever the dad is maybe he chose not to or get to be a part of that crazy, wild, romantic ride called parenthood. I’m glad her mom stepped up and realized she’s going to be a grandma, you need your mom in situations like that, it’s one of the toughest things you’ll go through but it is so worth it. ❤️ God bless you Dr John!

4:25 Dr. John is such a good guy. Good advice. I got my gf pregnant when she was 18, I was 19. Both of our parents were a wreck at first but they welcomed it after a very short time. They accepted it and they helped us and taught us. Meanwhile, literally every other adult that we knew was telling them to kick us out and make us pay for our mistakes and to let us learn on our own. Please don't do this to your child if they have a baby at a young age. Yeah, the pregnancy probably wasn't intended. But remember, however scared or worried you are for your child, they are just as scared, if not more, for what's about to happen to them and how they are going to support this new little person.

Dr D, that was beautiful. I am in my 40’s and my mother had me as a young high school student. She still carries immense shame to this day and it affected and projected towards me for most of life.. until I went to counselling ( 10 years and counting) . Her shame was passed on to my siblings and it’s affected 3 generations.. so you’re right in that it can change a family tree both good and bad.. I love this. ♥️ I have had some people question me how I can congratulate and get excited for other women having children out of wedlock. My response? Babies are awesome and there's nothing that can be done at this point. Love them, love that baby, and make the best of it. Don't make a child, like you said, feel shame early on for just existing. Help those Mamas. No body is perfect, and we all need love and encouragement. As Christians, if we truly want to be pro-life, then actually act like these babies deserve to be here; because they do. ♥️ And you start by loving those Mamas.
@kap849
@kap849 3 года назад
As a Christian this is something I struggled with. I agree with you, at this point, all we can do is show grace and love. I like to remind myself that I have faulted in so many ways and God has been gracious to me. So whenever a friend is in this situation, the first thing I say is congratulations and get excited. Then we'll deal with everything else later.

God gives life. Any biology lesson will teach how crazy it is that everything match up just right for a baby to conceived and grow to full term. I honestly don't know how biology teachers can be atheists (mine in college was, I wish now I could have had the courage to sit down with him and ask her to talk about it). But yes life is miraculous no matter how it happens. And it's messy like he says, but somehow God says children are a blessing. Not just the ones born into affluent dual parent homes. All children.

When we found out our daughter was pregnant last year, our conversation with her and her boyfriend (who we already considered part of the family) was that this doesn’t change your goals and dreams, it just changes the path you take to get there. Having the dream fall apart is heartbreaking. Not having your kids listen to you is heartbreaking. Having your kids do the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you taught them is heartbreaking. I think you can either grow from this or let it stunt your growth and use it as an excuse in life. I didn't stay with my first two daughters Dad (we had our first while he was still in highschool , and I had just graduated.) We ended up getting married at 20 and 21 thinking it was the right thing to do. Needless to say issues happened between us because we both were doing it for the idea of what we had thought family looked like . During the time we were together we were giving the blessing by his parents to live with them for the first year or so. Meanwhile I paid to have my own apartment because I want a back up plan. We were able to save up money to get into our own house so became homeowners at around the same time we got married. Even though we changed and our marriage was very short and we decided on divorce, and I kept the house because I could afford too, and he didnt want it. I think we all have decisions to make. I decided at 20 to save all my money instead of going out to party which I could have done wasted money on sitters and drinking. Instead I saw it as an opportunity to do better for my kids. I am almost 27 now with 4 kids, and I am in a relationship that we are both happy in. My ex husband and I co parent our girls together , and when our kids ask why we aren't together we say we are better be friends. I think it's important to remember being young is gonna be hard , but just because you are a young parent doesn't mean you can't succeed. It just needs to be made clear to them that their decisions impact not just them now, but this baby as well.

I was pregnant at 15. I love that this topic is being discussed. I get not celebrating at first and it feels wrong and taboo in a sense. But, after you have accepted it my advice is embrace these kids and tell them while the circumstances are not good this baby will be so loved and a blessing. Everyone lectured me all the time, tried forcing a abortion, and after birth I was told all the time "should have thought about that before you got knocked up." That baby became my purpose and because of him I became a success, and years later married and had baby number 2. With that baby so many celebrated, offered help, and was happy. Why would everyone offer to help me at 30 but offer me nothing at 15 16? That's when I needed the help, needed to be told it's going to be ok. When I got all the positive attention for my second child it broke my heart for the 15yr old me that had to work twice as hard to prove myself as a mother

@barryumiami
@barryumiami 3 года назад
I don't think you can go to high school at night. Usually night school is for continuing or adult education if you're missing or want to take one class, or finishing your GED. But if you are still two semesters away from getting a high school diploma, I don't know if you can take night classes for that and just drop out of school. My guess is that you would have to get an approval from the county school board, considering that he is still a minor, and even though he may have a child, he is still legally a minor, and cannot legally make choices for himself, unless he is emancipated. But even if he's emancipated, because she's still a minor, I would think that he would still need authorization from the school board to allow him to drop out of school as a minor.

The parents do not need to support these kids living together. One giant act of irresponsibility is not a license to play grown up on someone else's dime and a live in boyfriend is never what a 16 year old girl needs.
@catdancerskaleidoscopeofbo8496
@catdancerskaleidoscopeofbo8496 3 года назад
NO. You should not be acting excited about the baby. You should not have this girl and baby move into your home. They need to put this baby up for adoption. And if that is not going to happen, your son needs to get a full time job with a mentor, and to get his GED. This is not a time for celebration. There Is going to be a world of heartache ahead, and pretending that is not so is not going to make these two teens/ kids into more responsible adults. It sounds like all the adult parents are dysfunctional, so rotating them through those houses with the baby is not advisable. They need counseling, parenting classes, and an adult who is actually responsible, such as a mentor, to guide them into how to become self sufficient as quickly as possible.

@tuchus8781
@tuchus8781 3 года назад
No child should be allowed to purposely change and control the family dynamic. There is a fool proof way to insure your children stays on path. Starting young you let them know the rules and consequences of their actions. If they choose to get pregnant they must move out with 0 financial support. 1 day a week for babysitting. This is a monthly conversation. It becomes embedded so no "mistakes" occur. Works like a charm. Friends and family have helped their children immensely thru this simple monthly mantra. Keeping open communication is vital
@LisaLisaCJ

So where did two teenagers one whom is pregnant get financial support? Because legally the parents are responsible for this baby until the parents are adults. The boys parents will have to pay child support. I’m just asking because you said they have to move out

@@LisaLisaCJ If the child chooses the action they choose the consequence. A relative, partner parents, their relatives. Most children love their home and would never want to lose that security.
