My buddy saw that arc on toonami and decided right there to never watch one piece again XD I'm also a OP stan and am annoying AF about it but hey it's what we do
I honestly think you will really enjoy the next big arc: water 7/eneies lobby. Amazing character development across the board and phenomenal story/world building.
i think something that got many people into one piece, is that we started watching it as kids, so the first arcs that were more 'childish' set pretty well with us. Then the story kind of matured with its readers
It is the same thing with the star wars animated shows like Clone Wars or Rebels they start off very childish because they aired on children's channels but matured with their audience. The first and final seasons of both shows are night and day.
It takes a serious turn with Water 7, the depth given within the story made my jaw drop. Also Sanji’s character goes through a big breakthrough as well.
Oda’s early writing has definitely shifted from lighthearted kid friendly stories to very serious, world reflecting stories. As the show goes on, he brings in very serious aspects of real life into this weird funny show
yeah one piece gets SO much fucking better from water7/enies lobby onwards. water 7 is when the modern one piece starts to come out, the more serious shit, the slavery, the world government being corrupt assholes, etc etc its SO much better than early one piece
That’s pretty disingenuous. One piece is the exact same show when it comes to tone in wano as it was 800 episodes ago. Luffy is the exact same character with the exact same personality. Pretty much every straw hat aside from robin is the same too. Nothings really changed. There’s not some major tonal shift like in Hunter x Hunter which is definitely applicable there. Charlie shouldn’t go into more of the show expecting the show to drastically change and be more serious. Maybe the paramount war saga 300-500 does that with the subject matter but it’s still one piece and it’s still covered in a layer of goofiness. As soon as that finishes and you hop into fishman island, it’s the exact same as it was before. If Charlie doesn’t like the tone of the show now, he won’t like it 1000 episodes in. A dozen episodes into the show, there’s bits and pieces of serious moments. Usopp being all bloody and getting beaten to shit by Kuro, Sanjis backstory with him starving on an island with Zeff, Nami’s backstory with Bellemere being murdered, Nami repeatedly stabbing her tattoo on her shoulder and asking luffy for help. There is seriousness from the beginning.
You mentioned Pell not dying. It was originally written that Pell was to die, but Oda changed it because that chapter for the mange released at the around the same time as 9/11. Oda felt that it would be distasteful to have a character die due to a terrorist attack after the events of 9/11. Thus making the "Will of P"
Skypiea is definitely one of those arcs where you don't really appreciate it until you've caught up with the anime/manga and then view it for the second time around. It's riddled with so much of the story's lore and mystery and is the centerpoint for a lot of big One Piece theories. I actually just finished Skypiea today because I've been rewatching One Piece to ease the pain of waiting for new chapter releases, and I never realized just how important that arc really is and all the shit I missed the first time around. Still, there were a lot of times, even second time around, where I was skipping forward because there were so many filler moments. Either way, I hope he decides to stick with it all the way because it's either now or never with how fast it seems One Piece is finally coming to an end. This is peak fiction.
Bro idk what everyone else is on in only 230 in and I loved skypeai the whole story the symbolism even the world building in that arc. And I liked foxy pirate that was a hilarious arc imo I and felt like a nice kick back but idk guess it’s just me
@@Great-Dao-of-Elegance Seeing as it’s second in spot for the most sold comics in the world surpassing batman, i’d say it’s really close to peak fiction. 😂
Personally, my favorite part of Skypeia was Noland's backstory, I find it very touching; how he was introduced as a character that told big lies to become famous, only to find out he was very honest and hardworking and in his final days waiting for his execution he wasn't thinking about his own predicament, but rather, what happened to his friend, hoping that he was somehow still okay. I enjoy the Noland scenes very much, because it is all to common that is how actual history plays out as well. Most of the villains are locked away in the underwater prison Impel Down (which is based off Dante's Inferno; the prison is divided into 6 levels and each level has a distinct theme for crime and punishment). Eventually you'll see some previous enemies pop back up, turns out there imprisoned in Impel Down.
There's definitely gonna be another prison break, can't wait to see all our old buddies breakout and join the cross guild or something. Doffy needs to join cross guild, all I'm saying XD
I feel like when charlie sees some of luffy’s backstory, he will be able to understand why he was so easily able to defeat some villians in the beginning
I think it's perfect. Luffy had no crew. His technical first mate is Koby before he met Zoro. No one wants to join a weak pirate. Luffy gave his crew drive, they really believed in that he could conquer the Grand Line.
i feel that the crew having a somewhat easy time with the first half of the grand line sets up really well for the redline and the challenges the crew has from then on, turd hits the fan kind of moment
Well tbh Luffy was just too overpowered in the first half of the story and didn't have a real challenge until Alabasta, his base strength doesn't change until after Marineford
I never had an issue with Luffy's goofiness or childlike personality, but I do get where Charlie is coming from. It will be interesting to know his opinion on when Luffy "matures" after the Impel Down and Marineford arc And now the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs come, which they are just PERFECTION...like just damn perfect
He never actually "matures" though. As usual from Oda, his characters never face any real development even after going through traumatic events. Post-marineford Luffy should've been huge for his character, but unfortunately Oda loves to revert to the status quo, a more talented writer would take that opportunity to give Luffy more depth and complexity, but Oda sure does love his one dimensional static characters 😅
As someone who’s been watching/reading one piece for 19 years and hearing the hate solely because of amount of episodes it has I truly appreciate you taking your time to watch and actual review big respect.
Honestly, the best way for most people to enjoy One Piece is to literally skip all the filler arcs. The series has an ungodly amount of filler episodes that you can completely skip while still enjoying the good arcs like Enies Lobby/Marineford war.
@@PKPAPN sadly no, naruto has filler episodes one piece has pacing issues which in my opinion is much worse because u can't really skip them since its still part of the story. i love one piece as an anime but as a show its terrible. One piece is goated in manga form tho
@@toucan2227 idk why you went on a rant about what he said in the video like you thought of any of it on your own, but One Piece has 95 filler episodes while Naruto has around 200. Your point is mute and you clearly haven't watched the show
As someone who is now 680 episodes in, I can say that it does get VERY good. The first 200 so episodes are good, but nothing too much. Once you get to Water 7, Enies Lobby, Sabaody Archipelago, Impel Down, and Marineford, it is just INCREDIBLE. The amount of character development, world and story building is next level. You just gotta keep pushing and it will pay off more than you could have known. I’m currently on Dressrosa. Best arc since Marineford.
@@zexionienzo4183 Yea, I am very curious to know what characters they are talking about because I honestly can’t think of a single character with any development.
@@zexionienzo4183characters have definitely matured so I have no idea what you are talking about. Luffy might still be as dumb and goofy as he was in the beginning of the series, but his way of thinking through situations has definitely changed. He is a better captain post time-skip that can actually take lead of his crew. Usopp has improved. He is definitely not the same coward he was at the beginning of the series. Maybe you read a different series idk.
You'll appreciate Skypiea a lot more if you read the manga. The payoff from Jaya to the Calgara and Noland backstory to Luffy hitting the bell was insane. Amazing writing, but the arc was probably a little longer than it needed to be and the fake out deaths are just bad.
I agree with charlie the first 300+ episodes were boring apart from enies lobby. The anime only really started to get good at impel down arc then peaked at marineford arc, hit a slow burn for a minute after marineford..peaked again around dressrosa and then peaked again in wano.
@@HinamiMel that's not what i'm saying, there's plenty of "good" episodes in one piece like arlong park, choppers arc, alabasta, enies lobby, etc..but for me it wasn't consistently good it was like a lot of boring episodes and then some good moments but it wasn't peaked yet the villains were kinda weak and uninteresting near the start and you weren't really introduced to that many cool characters near the start. I'd say the first few cool characters you get introduced to are actually ace and crocodile. Apart from zoro of course. I know they had the whole thing with mihawk and zoro but it didn't really stand out to me that much I actually kinda forget about that whole thing because it wasn't really that interesting for me we basically just saw mihawk show up and we never really got to know much about mihawk I think the characters become interesting when they have their own arcs leading up to them. The actual peak of one piece if you can sit through a lot of boring episodes is impel down and marineford. Then it's consistently good from that point onwards with maybe 1 exception being that arc I think it's called punk hazard that was a trash arc honestly
i started one piece with the anime then transitioned into the manga after arabasta to try the feeling of it. i gotta say the manga experience in one piece is much more supperior to the anime. i had to switch back to the anime after ennis lobby to not miss on the good action stuff. and im still sticking with the anime for the good job toei is doing. but still the manga feels much better for the pacing and story telling.
I like how Charlie is showing the beginning of what all one piece fans feel but on a larger scale. The characters and story slowly grow on you throughout the extremely long course of the story and eventually you are hooked on 25-30+ characters and you can’t wait to see what they do next. It’s just whether or not you get there is the question
Same. I mean I'm currently on episode 410 so not that much for One Piece but the beginning was very slow and I had to force myself to watch it. Now it's slowly getting better and the characters grow on you
@@Entyipo that’s one pieces biggest strength. You are only on 410 so imagine how much you will like the characters and all the badass moments if you get to 1000+… it’s kinda just if you are willing to watch some of the super slow parts and put up with it which I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to do tbh🤷🏻♂️
Luffy, Usopp, Franky, and Sanji never grew on me and i'm at the current latest chapter. I'd put Chopper in that list too since he's basically just a cute look at me merchandise opportunity in the story but he's not as frustrating a character as the previous 4. Don't even get me started on Fishman Island Sanji....or the fact that Wano Usopp almost regressed back to pre-timeskip Usopp.... If it wasn't for characters like Zoro, Robin, Brooke as part of the main cast and other really interesting characters like Rayleigh, Shanks, and BB, i'd probably have stopped reading a long time ago.
I'd consider him pretty badass. He tried directly confronting opponents to no avail, however once he gets the pieces into place he can shine. His tenacity is commendable, see his and Chopper's fight against Mr. 4 and Ms Merry Christmas.
I cannot visually process the manga. I can only find it in black and white and I have to reread the same page like 4 times for my eyes to comprehend what they are looking at. I wish Japan just did 100% full color manga for literally everything like American comics do.
One of the reasons why Oda doesn't make Luffy kill any of his ennemies is because accodring to Oda, killing them is not a punisment for Luffy he wants them to still be alive and see that he crushed their dreams and beliefs and that they'll never be able to accomplish them as long as he is around.
Please keep with the story! Enies Lobby is probably the first time we see Luffy truly challenged and the emotional payoff throughout the show is incredible. Oda doesn't just forget his characters and characters you thought meant very little have a big role to play in the over arching story! It is totally worth it in the end I promise!!!
@@shihoblade saw 3 episodes of that arc and holyy shit I swear its the worst arc i've ever seen on any series, dropped that shii instantly, as well as fillers, its more enjoyable
The no death thing in the beginning of the series, Oda does give a reason for this if I remember right. In a Q&A SBS, he promised his Grandmother it wouldn't be a violent manga.
@@josephbartholomew Spoilers but yeah Oda does raise the stakes after that. He probably kept that promise while his Grandma was with him or just felt the series needed to evolve with his audience
If you’ve read Bakuman , lots of times it’s the editors or magazine that forces decisions - I don’t think any mangaka was free to make 100% creative decisions weekly like the introduction of the worst generation that was a demand from Jump
@@killpuddle9977 yup which ties into the one piece world perfectly. Strong willpower makes a good haki user and if their dream is crushed then their will would be too. That’s how I see it at least
At the part where he's talking about "if he's not coming back just kill him" a few of the villains we see in the new world/grand line will return after being defeated and the logic of the villains not returning ,from the arcs that consist of the east blue sea, it is most likely from them being terrified of the grand line since it has a pretty scary reputation of pirates entering it and never coming back alive. But in the one piece universe down the line this works due to them showing the villains powering up and returning back into the story.
this is still a shitty explanation and shitty writing. I mean the only one who even comes back to my knowledge from that time is jango. the feeling of getting to see him fully defeated and die is way better than the whopping FIVE fucking minutes he comes back for in marineford
IDK if Arlong Park is one of the best arcs in one piece, but it's a fairly decent indicator as to what the show is like. it showcases how oda can take some time to build up a story, has a solid emotional core to it, shows the crews bonds, etc. it's a good glimpse at what one piece is really about.
Something I've mentioned to a lot of people about/for one piece if they say they don't like the pacing of the anime is to try watching through One Pace. It's a fan project that cuts out a lot of filler moments and brings it closer to the manga. Also, about the people not dying, it's a very real and valid complaint. On the side of Luffy killing, I believe that Oda mentioned that Luffy prefers to kill the dreams of his enemies, because he believes that's worse
the thing with characters not dying, it is annoying for fans and people who aren't fans looking into the series, but Oda fake kills characters that don't really have an affect on the series, like Pell and Pound. Other more important characters that have deaths do stay dead because them coming back alive would change the story and feel so much worse than a side character from 20 years ago like Pell.
I have watched one piece and one pace and IMO one pace is the best way to experience the anime by far. It's not just that the pacing is slow in general the anime genuinely ruins some high impact moments from the manga by dragging them out. One Pace fixes all of that and more, I HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend it to anyone wanting to get into the anime but feels like it's slow. Don't feel like you're missing out on anything, they cut pure filler and that's it.
@@christiancasaverdepertica1802 Are you talking about the one after Skypiea with Jonathan, cause that one's the G8 arc and yes, it is the best filler arc.
The rising of the stakes and lowering of the goofiness is something that progresses with the acts, you're still in act one, so that has a couple more big jumps where they rise pretty quickly! Have fun watching!
Once you learn more about luffy its pretty much impossible not to like him, and understand why he is the way he is. Never change Luffy, never change. Also, I dont really think luffy doesnt try to kill them, some times they just live, youll be glad they live though.
I would really like to be spoiled on that, because I'm at episode 591 and I'm getting really tired of One Piece and its storytelling. I could barely keep watching it so I've put it on hold.
@@Dxntoo Maybe switch to the manga? Because imo, the anime is just really really slow and badly executed most of the time. It has iconic moments, but suffering through hundreds of episodes just for an epic/emotional moment within a single episode just isn't worth it to me anymore.
Luffy's character is really good, we don't even know (spoiler below) what luffy's true dream even is. I always thought it was a one dimensional "I WANT TO BECOME PIRATE KING" dream like becoming hokage. But that's only a stepping stone to achieve his true dream, which he has only shared with his crew mates. After finding out he had a secret dream all this time it made me more interested in his character.
@@etherealmako (Spoiler for anyone else who is reading this) . . Ah you're talking about the conversation he had with Ace and Sabo when they were younger right? Yeah, that did make me curious. But then it makes me wonder, how many hundreds of episodes will they keep teasing the viewers with it before they reveal it. It's one thing if they do a good job at building up the hype around it while keeping people intrigued, but unfortunately, I don't have much faith with how bad I find their pacing and storytelling at the point I am now...
Important to understand that villains don't die normally because the Straw hats crush their dreams instead. Dreams (goals) are very very important in the One Piece world. Also a lot of the villains are sent to impel down after they have been defeated so characters will eventually return.
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS HES KILLING THEIR (of course justifiably because the villains dreams are distorted and in the end want to destroy others dreams to bring theirs to fruition) DREAMS WHICH IN THIS STORY IS WORST THAN KILLING A PERSON
Honestly this makes me feel a lot better about that but another issue for me is all the fake out deaths or characters that probably should die or at be critically injured after receiving an insane amount of damage but walk away just fine. Like Pell and koza in alabasta. Wyper used the reject dial like 4 times and there wasn’t any consequences. A bunch of people got zapped by millions of volts of electricity to just walk away fine in skypiea. During these arcs the stakes feel like they’re there but once you reach the end it’s like they were never there aside from the threat of whatever the main villain is trying to accomplish.
This is certainly a take, but (a.) it doesn't make realistic sense, given that one set-back is absolutely not the end of one's aspirations, (b.) swapping death for dreams doesn't make this feel any better in terms of catharsis for the viewer, IMO. Seeing as this swap is never stated, or really even talked about in universe, it still rings hollow at the end of an arc when it feels like all the stakes weren't real to begin with. I've been watching OP weekly since before Sabaody and do genuinely enjoy Oda's work, but I think the way he handles the stakes is possibly the weakest part of his writing.
Skypiea was definitely one of the hardest arcs to get through for me, there are a lot of moments where literally nothing is happening, on the other hand this arc has some of the most fun and interesting fights in the series, and a lot of other badass moments, it's just that they are intertwined with extremely long and boring side plots.
I had the same kind of thoughts about one piece when I was where he is in the show, but I’m so glad I took the time to catch up because it’s now my favorite anime. Please don’t stop doing these I love these little updates!
Without getting into spoilers Luffy doesn't change too much over the series in terms of goofiness, however he does go through some very good character developing experiences and although the goofiness doesn't go away he becomes much more endearing. I've just caught up to the most current arc over the course of 7 years so my memory isn't the best on events earlier in the series but at least to me he becomes a much more likable character.
Apt description. I love how simple Luffy is. He is my favourite but it took post time skip and some captiany scenes from Water 7 Enies lobby. That I saw how serious he is he just doesn't dwell there. No spoilers but I feel we are still yet to see him take the role as serious as he needs. And I am looking forward to it.
In my opinion, I personally loved the idea of having someone that’s not too serious and loving as your goofy captain. If I watched random episodes of one piece I would think that zoro would be the captain but it’s just some dude that ate a rubber fruit and is goofy allot of times but gets serious when it comes to understanding peoples feelings
SPOILER His character is joy boy how is it not goofy? Once again, the medium has to be consumed completely for an opinion to be applicable or relevant to the topic as a whole.
Can't wait to hear your opinions on Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs. There's some really good character development, iconic character moments, world-building, lore, and intense battles. Also, certain plot points in the two make for a very refreshing story rather than the cliche, trope-y stuff we're used to.
One huge factor with the early parts also is that that happened like 10 years ago or more for people that have been watching/reading it from the start. The early arcs are probably not that great but in my mind they were as hype as the current stuff is.
It's also retroactive appreciation of the past materials. Because the later plot point or information is built on the older material, you feel like it was necessary and impossible to tell the story without the boring parts.
A friend got me into one piece by starting me at Water 7. I had already watched up to Alabasta as a kid so it wasn't a huge leap but starting at water 7 got me so hyped on One piece that I binged until current (1st episode of Wano at the time) in about 7 months. It's a different moment for everyone but at some point you just realize that Luffy is going to be king of the pirates. Going back and rewatching Skypeia I can say that it is definitely the most dragging arc in the anime but it is also one of the most significant so it's sort of a band aid you just need to rip off.
@@labradoodledo3952 yep. i binge watched one piece being proud i watched all current episodes, then not one week later hated myself for leaving myself with nothing
I think the arc you’re about to go into (water 7/enies lobby) will be your favorite so far. Water 7 takes a step back from a lot of the journey but instead focuses on the character relationships and character conflicts. Hope you keep enjoying it!
he might not even reach water 7 and enies lobby because he has to go through... long ring long land first which could just make him stop watching altogether

@@LeftCaptain yeah just stfu lmao all the things I listed were well done and if you disagree you quite literally are hating to hate. What’s good to keep in mind from early one piece is that up until alabasta luffy is a big fish in a small pond. What made me stuck with the series was lougetown. To me, that’s the arc that really gives the viewer a sense of scale for how big the world really is. The straw hats almost get taken out by a marine, luffy almost gets killed by buggy, and then gets his ass saved by a mysterious stranger. It gives the impression that there actually is stuff out there that luffy can’t beat yet, he just hasn’t had a real challenge. They mention that east blue is the weakest sea when they reach the grand line. Then they explain how there’s 5 more seas and how the grand line is the most dangerous one. From skypiea onward to timeskip I got the impression that luffy was finally fighting people around his level and was only winning in the east blue because everyone there was a chump. Which is true! Arlong, don krieg, kuro, and buggy are all pirates who couldn’t make it on the grand line so they went to the east blue to terrorize people who couldn’t fight back.
It's interesting because a brief glance at One Piece might create the impression that it's designed to go on forever, with Luffy getting stronger but also fighting stronger enemies. Infinite escalation to milk the IP for all it's worth. And to be fair it is one of the longest running animes. But there's an actual sense of progress when you compare where Luffy was at the start to where he is now, from a random nobody to the Fifth Emperor. Sometimes it feels like the One Piece is kept perpetually just out of reach so the series can go on forever, but there's no doubt he's so much closer to it than he was before. Instead, it feels more like the world was simply bigger than we realized and we're only now understanding the true scale of the journey that Luffy initially set out on. Describing East Blue Luffy as a big fish in a small pond it rather apt; it creates the false impression that Luffy will soon conquer the pond, but the pond keeps getting bigger and bigger, and it slowly begins to dawn on us just how tiny that initial pond was and how enormous the giant ocean is. I remember being surprised to find out that the Grand Line had a second half; just when it feels like they're finally nearing the end you find out they're only at the halfway point. But as the pond has gotten bigger, it's started to run out of room to expand into. Lots of pirates have been hyped up for being strong, such as the Seven Warlords, only for it to later be revealed that they're dwarfed by the Four Emperors. But I'd be surprised if there are very many people stronger than the Four Emperors; if there are, they're probably not on the Grand Line, and we know Laugh Tale is the last island on the Grand Line, so that kind of limits how much further things can be pushed. Honestly, it wouldn't be out of character to have an arc that takes place on the moon or something, and the moon could have super strong people, even stronger than the Four Emperors. But the One Piece should still be in the Grand Line. Personally, I don't think the show will end once Luffy finds the One Piece, rather I think it will kick off the last major story arc. We've been getting all kinds of hints about some super secret thing that's been hidden and has something to do with the poneglyphs, the missing century, the lost superweapons, the World Government, and, of course, the One Piece. Perhaps whatever the big reveal is will open up a whole new mega-arc, much like the reveal of the second half of the Grand Line, but given how fixated the story has been on finding the One Piece I wouldn't think the story would go on for too much longer after Luffy finally finds it.
the amount of fake deaths Koza had in Alabasta annoyed me so much. he gets shot through the chest 3 times and "dies" but then in the next scene he's alive and the bullet holes through his body and clothes are gone like he didn't just get shot 3 times point blank through the chest. like wtf
skypiea is basically the start of a lot of mystries which you may have missed but are extremely important in the future, lets say mantra seems like a very overpowered single villian ability but later it turns out to be a big part of the story, the poneglyphs, roger visiting skypiea, impact dials, these are some things which originated from skypiea but are part of the story as a whole
@@loivern8015 true but one piece was never supposed to be a group of different stories[arcs] rather it is a whole story which was divided into arcs for viewer coveniency

The stakes and payoff in One Piece are based on emotion. Emotion is the reason why Luffy destroying Arlong Park is an amazing moment. Just thinking about Luffys reaction to seeing the room that Nami was using when she was forced to draw maps makes me happy. These moments are why people love One Piece. If they do not land for someone, One Piece is probably not something they will ever love. Since Charlie is commited to force himself through all of it, I am interested if later arcs will be able to grab him with the emotion, but if the next saga does not do it... I am not going to be expecting anything to do it.

Little thing about your arlong park opinion: I don't think at all, that the arc was spend hyping up arlong as a strong villain. What was done was making him hateble by getting to see his actions(which btw will greatly change in fishman island because he gets a lot nore depht there)but if I really correctly it was only mentioned a few times how strong arlong was. It wasn't an arc fovused on defeating a strong opponent but rather an arc focused on emotions and the personal demons of a straw hat. Arlong park for me was when the series went from really good to absolutely amazing because of how well namis Trauma was used and rather than luffy beating arlong beeing the climax of the arc, I see nami finally asking luffy for help and luffy accepting without a question asked as the climax. Idk if Charlie or anyone at all is gonna see this but I'd like a statement of opinion on this if anybody does
one piece is my favorite piece of fiction, its the perfect balance of emotion and adventure. From the silly and wholesome moments to the dark and depressing moments, it really feels like I myself am part of the crew.
I had similar thoughts on Skypeia, but everything for me was brought around at the end of Water 7 and Enies Lobby, could not stop watching and it became easily my favorite show ever. Skypeia was good but long. Enies Lobby is just perfect in every way
I had the same experience. even after ennies lobby there were few arcs where I decided that manga would be the better option instead of the slow paced anime for example thriller bark. But I'm glad that I didn't stop watching the show thats for sure
One thing that Oda has continually stated throughout interviews, is that Luffy is being distracted throughout arcs because if he got to the villain right away, he would end everything much too quickly. I know that may sound like an excuse to some people, but I do like the fact that Oda gives a narrative reason for it. That doesn't mean you have to like it of course, but Luffy's childlike zaniness is exactly what makes him so lovable, in my opinion. And the series will make sure to show you he can get extremely serious when needed. About the Arlong park thing. It kinda makes me sad that that's the way you view it. Especially considering it didn't get finished in one blow. There actually was a fight, but that doesn't matter as much. What did matter was the emotional weight behind that final blow. That's what makes One Piece conclusions so good. Behind each of Luffy's punches isn't his own malicious intent, but his will to fight for other people. And that's where the impact of him defeating enemies lies. But yeah, Luffy was just way too strong for the East Blue to pose him an actual challenge.
"he would end everything much too quickly" Does Oda read his own series ? how would Luffy end Crocodile as soon as he entered Arabasta ? how would he defeat Rob Lucci as soon as he arrived at Ennies Lobby ? how would Luffy defeat Magellan ? how would Luffy save Ace from the admirals ? Maybe Oda was talkign about post timeskip Luffy . But even then , Luffy struggled against Katakuri and it took him 4 whole years to touch Kaido
@@Dan_Kanerva I believe Oda was talking about Luffy's stupidity in general. If Luffy had taken everything seriously from the get-go, and wouldn't have attacked crocodile head-on, but had devised a plan beforehand, he would have taken him down quite fast.

My take on anyone who is choosing to start One Piece: I started One Piece anime back in like 2008ish? and I was probably just 12y.o at that time. I now know I was a PRIME target audience for a shonen anime, and I NEVER for a second thought the pacing was horrendous. Why? Because the concept of "better pacing" did NOT exist to me. Netflix, crunchyroll, or any social media (reels) did not exist yet, so my developing brain was not rotting away with fast dopamine. I was still watching this series on 1 mb/s dial-up internet (or even less). The concept of "binging" a series wasn't a thing, there is no "quick content" and pre-streaming a 30minutes episode was the best I got, so I was watching every minute of it. Furthermore being so young, the slower pacing is better for kids, so that's by design! All kids shows (if you go watch any) is really slow. Also this being my first shonen, ALL the shonen concepts were new to me. If you do choose to start One Piece's anime journey, I got to preface and say it IS long, and the beginning is a slow slow burn. However, just take your time. Part of why I love One Piece, is that I'm growing up with the crew and the story. So to me, it's more of a 15+ year journey, it's my first anime show and to me One Piece actually shaped me greatly. I think Charlie's take is a 1000% super accurate take, because he's watching this as a "seasoned" anime watcher now, but I'm super glad he's still sticking with it.
I like luffy because he is so carefree in such a serious world. He is stoic in a childlike and humorous manner. His way of bringing people together and overcoming odds by using his body in creative ways makes him cool to me. He always plays risky wild cards and willing to die for his goal. He isnt discriminatory based on strength but whether they're a quitter. Don't matter if you're a chopper or a zoro as long as you don't have a shitty attitude you ait with luffy. Like sometimes the anime makes irritating scenes period but luffy is cool.
So is every main character in anime ?😂 care free. Eat a lot. Happy go lucky. And just so happens to be the strongest Ik their universe. Literally all main characters of anime
@@rushpatriot2866 if luffy was average one piece wouldn’t gap ur fav animanga in terms of success lol (not gonna try to reason with someone who clearly has a bias against a few tropes and can’t look deeper into a character because of that, I’ll just leave u with the facts one piece is number one by a ridiculous margin for a reason)
I think Oda goal with the lack of deaths was to make real deaths more impactful but for me when ever I see anyone “die” it has no impact as I automatically believe he or she’s still alive.
yes oda is a genuis but kinda a pussy when it comes to pulling the trigger. every fakout death is legitimately trash writing, the fact one piece is still top 3 for me speaks to how strong its strengths are
One thing about Pell’s sacrifice scene, he was originally going to die. The manga chapter was published shortly after 9/11 so Oda and his publisher thought it would be better to change the ending regarding his death. Oda gets into his groove in the next arc. It’s the first taste of what One Piece really is going forward. Hope you enjoy it.
@@earniebert3345 200 episodes but, Y-yeah? I didn’t say it’s when it gets good, it’s been good. It just hits a point that’s more comparable to modern day anime. The previous arcs are a little more light hearted and this arc is more consistent with the tone the rest of the show follows.
I love watching people get into One Piece and having broad stroke takes. It really makes you appreciate Oda's writing and the various shifts that take place. Week to week consuming One Piece vs. All in one shot is such a different experience.
It they watched/read week to week. They'd drop it immediately. You only appreciate the story retroactively. If you watch most people reviewing the series piece by piece they don't like it, and eventually gain that appreciate. Even for the old stuff.
people who watched it for years are heavily biased. People that watch it in a shorter time frame have the clearer opinions on what they are watching because their only attachments to the story are the ones the story makes not the ones the person makes due to sentimental values.

I will say Charlie, it is a slow burn. For someone who is reading the manga and watching some of the major battles just to catch up, it does get better. Some parts are really slow but once you hit the Arc known as Water 7, I feel like that's when you'll truly start to fully grasp the excitement and slowly build up more impatience of wanting to know what's next. Keep it up! Glad to know you're enjoying the series now!
As someone who is in episode 950 and has watched the whole water 7 arc, it's honestly not that good as people say it is. The strongest aspect of One Piece are the characters and their relationships, but these arcs are just sooo sloooooooow, for one scenario or battle they must spend like 9 episodes in a row and it's just tedious, regardless im still enjoying the anime, but when people call One Piece a masterpiece or "goated" it's just really not... i can name much better animes from the top of my head without hesitating for example: Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, Attack On Titan, Vinland, Mob Psycho, Full Metal Alchemist, Castlevania and even Naruto i think executed it's villains and plot far better. If you're a person that prefers quantity over quality then One Piece is for you.
PEll was originally gonna die but due to the 9/11 attacks oda and the editors felt it insensitive at the time considering the tower and bombings therefore made the change.
shocked to hear that charlie dislikes luffy, he's usually people's favorite. Mine too, because he manages to strike a good balance with how he's dumb, but also like, THE MOST emotionally intelligent character of all time. like he understands people from the moment he meets them, he does not let rumors and hearsay color his perception of someone he hasn't met, unless that description comes from someone he trusts. He sees people for who they are in the moment, and understands exactly what they want and need. Not to mention how immaculately excellent he is as an avatar of the series' themes and messages, and how his character design is perfect, he's always utilized in really funny ways, and he has the most versatile and fun power of any protagonist.
Charlie saying Luffy isn't serious but Luffy when actually is but it's subtle in the beginning like when he didn't hesitate to punch Helmeppo or when he made fun of Alvida or when threat Ussop when first land on his island. Or when he dared dared Nami in caged when he was captured by Buggy. If you someone who takes yourself way to seriously you won't pick up on Luffy serious subtleness.
I’m sorry, when this man said he’s been watching for 2 years I thought “oh ok, so he’s probably caught up by now. He’s in Wano. Cus I started about a year n a half ago and even stopped watching for a few months after dressrosa and I’m in wano now.” Only for this man to say he JUST finished skipea??😨😨
Charles point about Luffy not killing is such a weird nit pick. Not every character needs to die, this isnt some edgy show like akame ga kill this is a fun adventure series. And also no it doesn't make sense for luffy, a feel good goofy guy, to just execute all of his villains. Definitely a weird criticism.
(no spoilers) You get to understand each character so deeply over the span of the series, if you pay attention. And One Piece is a story about themes, which also become more and more clear. I'll try to be clear about what I have to say. Luffy doesn't have to change (mostly). And whenever he does change, it lasts. Luffy is stupid. Very, very stupid. That by itself isn't bad design, the world of one piece is often not very realistic - it's often extreme and absurd, you have to just accept that and look at everything else the series offers, otherwise you won't like it. There is so much more to Luffy: his surprising emotional maturity, his humility, willpower, sense of justice that he doesn't repress... After Nami betrayed Luffy, even literaly threw dirt in his face, he remains 100% confident in her character. He risks by choosing to put his trust into her, but he wagers that risk because he believes in her, her kindness and the genuine bond they formed. He knows nothing about her sad backstory, he just knows he can AFFORT to make that wager. Like Shanks, he knows there are battles that don't have to be fought. One of his coldest moment that is certainly going to bear fruit in the future, by proving Bellamy wrong. Additionally, just like Shanks, the moment he found out Bellamy hurt his friend (be it physically or emotionally) he was resolute to bring him down. This also supports the fact that he learnes from his mistakes and actualy remembers the lessons. He is deeply aware of (most of) his flaws and completely understands and accepts when he needs help. This is really a lesson many people struggle with in the real world and seeing the main protagonist, the powerful Luffy, so easily admit he can't sail, can't use a sword, can't cool and can't lie (for better or worse) always sends a shiver down my spine. After Vivi criticised him for reacting impulsive and agresively towards the Drum island villagers, he recognizes she is right and puts the importance of his crew over his emotions and bows to them. Like I said, he listens and the lesson sticks: When meeting Dr. Kureha completely puts his emotions aside and only asks her to help his friends, despite also being in need of treatment. This is a somewhat weak example but other examples happen later in the story (or I can't remember them). This event with Vivi begins a streak of moments where Luffy's leadership is put into question and he has to rise above the challange. Luffy is a very 3 dimensional and always continues to be explored, like all other major characters. I'm sorry, I genuinely don't understand why you wouldn't like Luffy outside of his intellect. Particularly Skypiea is more slowly paced. The pacing becomes considerably worse after about episode 300, so if you want to continue at that point I would recomend the Manga.
Perpetual goofiness is one of those traits where it only works with certain characters i feel and that goes the same for any franchise, series or other media.
It doesn't work because that isn't even a character, there is nothing to it. A character in any medium should have more than one state of being, they should have depth. But I suppose if Luffy jumps into the water he can't swim.
Luffy straight up acts like a mentally ill children most of the time without explanation. With Goku you can at least say he hit his head when he was a baby and that mess up his btain but luffy has no explanation for his behavior.
It's the same complaint Charlie had with early Demon Slayer, the characters all get more depth in later arcs. Sanji for example has family issues that partially influenced the man he became. Something that isn't explored much early on
After water 7, I feel like you’d think that that arc created a lot of character development and story building overall. And after this point is where I feel the story becomes interesting and the crew kind of grows in some ways. Btw, I think that to my knowledge lots of people die later on in a couple arcs (maybe) based on memory, though my memory may not be the best.
@@memeduka No, I meant the good guys: Whitebeard, Ace, and Pedro who had more of a role with the Straw Hats. Totally forgot about Izo for some reason, probably because he didn’t interact with the Straw Hats. Mostly everyone else were villains, but I think it’s fair to say we need to see more intimate characters start dying, especially since it’s near the end. And Cobra shouldn’t count, since we still don’t know what really happened.
One Piece is for dragonball fans that go STRAIGHT into One Piece after finishing DBZ as 10 year children. It’s impossible for a working critically thinking adults who have seen many Anime to start OP from the start and enjoy it.
Charlie, you're in for a wild ride. I agree with you with not killing any character but when Oda did so, it hits deep in your soul. I started watching One Piece in my 1st year of college because it got me curios and I finished it in two months and became my #1 piece of media ever created. I've watched a lot of anime and movies prior to watching One Piece and nothing really compares what it made me feel like One Piece did. Sure it has some annoying traits and plot holes but it doesn't ruined it for me. Once you gon caught up to it you realize it was not enough and end up reading the manga. I understand that One Piece is such a slow burner of a series but the long wait is worth it. The lore and world building is I think is One Piece's greatest strength. Trust me I watched the entire One Piece series THREE TIMES just to recreate what it made me feel lmao. I envy you charlie for not knowing what's ahead of the story. Keep on you're own pace man. I'm waiting for your reaction after you caught up to One Piece.
For Pell specifically it makes sense he didn't die, because 9/11 just happened and publication probably told him to keep him alive, otherwise it may seem distasteful to the audience (doubt) But yeah.. but still Oda rarely ever kills somebody, he mostly kills their dreams and dreams mean a lot in one piece, since what dreams have been revealed to do later on.. Still wished some characters did die but yeah.. it's a Shonen that back then was suppose to be family friendly and funny and Oda never really changed, but it gets darker slowly but surely..
I watched the anime up until water 7 until I started reading the manga, the manga really is the way to go. You can read 5 chapters in the time it takes to watch a single episode. Restarted a while back and im currently on chapter 764 after reading for 5 months. Been watching one piece for like 10 years but im determined to be caught up by the end of this one
I finished the series on manga. Back then I thought skypiea is one of the best arcs. Then I found out a lot of people doesn't like it. Turns out, those are anime watchers.People I know who read the manga liked skypiea more. In catching up in manga, you can always just switch to anime(or look for clips) when a character is singing, iconic emotional scenes, etc.
Totally agreed, I started watching the anime some long while ago, maybe even around a similar time as charlie, and I watched up to finishing alabasta after a long while of watching, and then I dropped it for a bit. About almost two or three or maybe two and a half weeks ago, I started reading the manga frorm that point onward, and I'm already basically caught up, I've finished wano and I'm approaching the latest chapters. TWO AND A HALF WEEKS. People always say how when they watch one piece it takes them months to catch up, and I found it so crazy how I was able to read everything and tackle it in such shorter time. My method was that I'd read one whole entire arc per day, and if I cut back, continue the next day and start the next arc on the same day.
@@filmore4537 i read the manga and i can say is that Skypiea is incredible, i don't know how the anime ruined it, didn't watch it, but Skypiea is the only arc that really feels like a real pirate story, we have a treasure map, we have basically a new world to explore and a true villain. And a lot of people suggest to skip it, is the anime that bad?
Luffy being the worst Strawhat is the spiciest take I’ve ever heard. If Charlie doesn’t get Luffy right now, hopefully Enies Lobby changes his mind. Otherwise, I don’t think he’ll ever understand
[[[[[ No spoilers ]]]]] If you just finished or are just finishing Skypiea; The next 'proper' arc (Water 7 + Enies Lobby) is one of the high points of the series, so definitely do another one of these whenever you conclude that, assuming that you ever do. When it comes to characters dying... It's not really established on the nose, but the strawhats don't want to kill people. Like it's a dark, evil thing and frankly unnecessary to them. Whereas, they would get killed in a lot of scenarios if they were defeated. Back when I was watching the early parts of the series, I really enjoyed the East Blue stuff early on. And the first half of Skypiea, before stuff starts to go down, was definitely a bit of a slog as you said. There are highs and lows, as one might expect from a 1,000+ ep thing and some things will drag on for longer than they frankly should while some other things are kinda breezed through, but it's a journey, and I'd suggest it's a good one. It probably won't be very long until it concludes and after all this time, really looking forward to finding out how.
CHARLY IM BEGGING YOU DO NOT WATCH ONLY READ!!! The one piece anime is not a seasonal anime, and since Toei wants to stay back from the manga, (so the anime doesn’t overtake the manga) they will *D R A G G* the goddamn scenes and the characters personality to the *MAX!* I recommend reading and looking at your favorite moments on RU-vid or something. Toei does not give a damn. You will suffer on Dressrosa *GUARANTEED!!!* Its so sad because One Piece legitimately is the peak of mankind but the main way people will ingest it is through anime. And It pains me to tell people to read it because the anime is that bad. Yes I know Wano has some beautifully animated scenes but its too far and few between. The manga is fast pace, and the character gags arn’t dragged on for eternity. It’s basically perfect.
no. the manga isn’t dragged out because it misses the fine details of the character’s personalities which mangas in all stories have no choice but to do since well.. they are manga… tired of this anime hating bs that has no real justification. yes the manga pacing is better and its not filler and the canon source but thats all the perks it has. to get a full picture of the show its best to see that picture move. but its all up to preferences. no need to insult a great anime though. Toei used the same methods on Naruto and Dragon ball and you don’t see people complaining lol only you manga exclusives hate on it literally everyone else is excited for it . mangas do better for first impressions though, in fact thats how i got intro to one piece ( and will now collect all 100+ volumes and not even read it because the art and design alone brings back memories and is great to display and a great collectible) but watching anime after it is a must.
@@moehayate7546 My dawg Ive watched every minute and every episode of the One Piece anime (i still do) and read every chapter. This isn’t up for debate. Yes the anime will open up character’s personalities more but most of the time its brook saying “because I am a skeleton, YOHOHOHO.” I am not a complete hater since I still watch the anime but most new watchers would probably drop it or start skipping sections, episodes, or arcs. Missing out on Peak Piece. If you know how to read manga I will always recommend you read OP instead of watch because there is a WAY less chance anyone would drop it. IMO Its way easier to watch OP while you’re caught up weekly and not progress much, but its HELL to watch it back to back and not progress because you’re begging for something to happen and its being dragged out. I suffered in Dressrosa dawg.
It was not until Water 7 did I realize that OP was gonna be something special. So far the story had some great moments but mostly felt like a light hearted show and Skypeia was definitely a slog, but the last bit really paid off and was worth the slog. And in retrospect the arc has a lot of foreshadowing which you only realise much much later on. So it is a very important arc. But until Water 7 you never really get the idea what One Piece is really all about, Water 7/Ennies Lobby is where it really starts to hit you. It is one of those shows which really keeps growing and growing. Luffy once you get to know his backstory is waaaay more likeable. And I completely agree with Pell. He got such a powerful moment but that was ruined. I think it is because it came out during 9/11 and the editors asked Oda to keep him alive. Anyway people will die in One Piece, and oh boy when it happens it is gonna fucking hit really hard. You get the expectation that characters won't die and you think everything is gonna be alright and bam an important character dies and you are just left in disbelief.
late to this but the moment it was for me was when nami desperately asked for help and luffy responded was just amazing he was already kind of a in depth character from here on out. Will to give up his treasure and dreams for his friends
As a hardcore op fan, I definitely understand your thoughts so far. I really think the next arc (after long ring long land) will be a good one for you, I'm glad you're still watching and hope it gets better and better for you
I feel like Charlie really would enjoy the manga more, especially with the cover stories and how characters get reintroduced, the pacing is much better in the manga also so it doesn't feel like they're just filling in time, I know he already committed to the anime but he should definitely at least read the cover page stories to get that extra bit of lore and world building
EVERY arc in one piece always follow certain pattern.. new island, fooling around, spread out, running against time, 1vs1 fights, party, next destination.. but the author always find a new way to twist the story in the most unpredictable way and entertain people
I’m reading One Piece for the first time and loved Skypiea. Maybe it’s different in the anime, but the payoff of Luffy ringing the bell is so satisfying, and the whole battle royale type of thing going on in upper yard was so cool to me. The only thing I don’t like is how some of the characters survive the most ridiculous things, Wyper being the best example. Bro used the reject dial like 3 or 4 times, everytime someone saying “if he uses it again he’ll die!” and then got struck with a few million of vaults of electricity, and not only survived, but recovered fully in like a couple days. I just think those fakeout deaths happen a little too much. Other than that, one piece has quickly become one of my favorite manga, & I’m actually so hooked 🙏🔥
Pel was originally going to die, however i remember reading that since it was around 911 and the editors didn’t think it would be in good taste. One piece is a slow burn but very worth it. Skypia will become more important later down the line , sets up a lot of ideas down the road
A lot of the ideas you have are really valid. I used to feel like that a lot too, now looking back on it though it feels like a lot of it makes sense, certain characters not dying and ESPECIALLY Luffy always goofing around.
@@ButterscotchSox it's rarity is perfect the disbelief and inability to accept it is so similar to real life. Death that affects you is rare you aren't desensitized in one piece, because of rarity.
@@v-repmon2322 The rarity of death doesn’t outweigh the commonality of fake out deaths; the disbelief and inability to accept character deaths won’t come from grief, it’ll come from confusion about how a character could die in a certain way when other characters walk off other things like nothing. Spoilers for Marineford and Wano: For example if Ace’s death was more recent, people would be confused about how he was killed by Akainu while people like Tama and Speed can just walk off being attacked by Kaido. Oda is literally ruining any chance of people being genuinely hurt about deaths.
I started this journey with Charlie when he first hinted that he was gonna watch One Piece, Currently I am in love with the show and I just finished Thriller Bark arc and holy shit this show made me realize how much I was missing out.
The pay off of Arlong park is Luffy destroying the person and establishment that kept Nami in slavery, evident with the way that Luffy is absolutely furious when he sees the literal blood, sweat, and tears nami has poured in the the maps in the room that was essentially her prison cell. Seeing all the abuse Nami had gone through in that room made luffy realize the only way to end this was to destroy the entire establishment, which was a monument of Nami's slavery.
I've been caught up to one piece for a decade, it has been ungodly slow at times. But the characters are growing that whole time and progressing, I feel like eventually you'll get to a point in the story where you love every strawhat. It's inevitable
@@waterlawtrafalgard.6667 the most dragged out part was them running away from whole cake. It might have been like a handful of chapters, but oda was taking a break every chapter making it feel twice as long. Or when it literally took him 6 months, over a few chapters to do Oden's flashback. People forget how sluggish the story move most of the time, especially reading it week to week.
I think the reason a lot of villains are not "killed" is that Oda may think that they can be used in the story later on. Well .. few of them are. So it's like having the option open all the time 😅 And i think oda intends to continue their story BUT the main story is already too long so most of them end up forgotten (axed) I do want some characters to die (if done well ofc)
@@TheInevitableBum Oda said somewhere that the reason Luffy doesn't kill most of his opponents is because he thinks it would hurt more to live with the defeat, which is true for most of his opponents (Basically just kills their dreams instead of them)
@@onee-sama3984 I hate how people keep taking this quote so seriously, this is obviously just Oda being silly when answering fan questions like pretty much always. Luffy doesn't avoid killing because he's some sadistic maniac trying to inflict the most damage on his enemies. I'm pretty sure he's not avoiding killing them at all, they just stay alive cause it's One Piece. Also it seems very ambiguous to me wither or not Luffy killed any of the thousands upon thousands of marines and pirates he fought. We know at least for a fact a lot of marines died at Marineford. None of them fought Luffy? Did no one die in Enies Lobby? That seems insane to me for either of those to be the case. I think Oda is intentionally leaving it vague. Regardless I'm fairly sure Luffy doesn't really mind killing.
@@onee-sama3984 if I was a villain and got beaten and given the chance to live I would literally overkill train and get stronger and kill every mf in radius
Skypia's value took several years, over a decade to become relevant, actually in the very very far future Skypia will be far more relevant for you, it contains hints to the main and final plot. Luffy was demented until very late in the series but believe it or not he will become very badass and reliable, it really changes the character and highlights how it makes sense for him to be the king of pirates and find the One Piece
I just watched the sp episode and tbh it wasn't much of a loss since as you research you end up getting the info you missed anyway. I think the biggest part I missed was the poneglyph and I found out about through recap anyway
Ehhh the anime version if skypea atleast is still bad in alotta areas even if it does have absolutely crazy foreshadowing. Priest are all garbage characters and its really really slow. Idk how the manga version is yet
The other thing you should have noticed already about Luffy's character that is smart, is his emotional intelligence. He always knows who is being abused/fucked over and knows exactly what to do that is best for them. For example with Nami with Arlong. This becomes more and more apparent as this is a key aspect of his character.
I kinda like luffy's silliness because in my eyes it makes him seem super determined. Like in his mind he knows he will win. It definitely gets annoying at times tho like with the snake, and it becomes much less common later in the show.
It doesnt become less common. it SHOULD have, but oda isnt really good with changing characters, and he ends up falling back on the same few tropes usually. Good example of this is usopp who just resets his character everytime they arrive at a new island
@@browniebot6143 Same with Sanji, i found him pretty cool in Thriller Bark and WCI, but then after WCI he just goes back to how he was pre time skip and now i dont really care for him at all
@@narukazunoice what? He doesn't though, even at the end of the arc he's into women, it's just him. The whole aspect that of wci was sanji not relying on anyone and taking the burden for everything. That development was in wci and then shown in wano how he relied on Robin. That's why Robin was so thankful and happy that sanji asked for help because of how powerful it was. In every other arc we see sanji doing his own thing or trying to take the burden for everything. Then we see even more development when he chooses to smash the raid suit realising that luffy wouldn't want that from him. Then we see him say "you've seen the miracles he's done" to chopper which just shows how much his faith in luffy has strengthened
Something of note: Death in this story while rare is always impactful. More often than not however characters dont get killed, their dreams do. Often luffy crushes the dreams/reputation of the villains he fights rather than killing them. I mean whats worse losing any and all reputation and no longer being able to pursue your ambition or dying?
You should really try out One Pace, it's a fan cut version of the anime that removes the random reaction shots of every single character in the scene and cuts out around 40% of the anime without any loss of canon material. I was in the same place as you were, just finished Skypiea by forcing myself and was about to quit, and One Pace completely saved the entire show for me.
Fun fact: in the anime, the arc immediately after Skypia is the Marine Base arc, which is filler. The next canon arc starts at episode 207, though I found Marine Base to have some pretty funny moments.
I think his personality up until water 7 is to help him grow more down the road. Also skypia is slow in regards to other arcs but it is genuinely one of the more important arcs for the series
How is one of the more important arcs of the story? Dials have disappeared, Enel loterally got off the planet, no character introduced in Skypea has made a comeback. I loved the arc but almost nothing that happened in Skypea had any impact after it ended
Love his honest analysis! Picked One Piece up again like a month ago at the start of Impel Down (now im finishing Punk Hazard) cause I read up to about halfway through Fishman Island last year and have watched up until the timeskip a few years ago. I TOTALLY get the complaint about the lack of Luffys development, but as other comments said, you start to see him grow as a character a little bit in the next few arcs. He's pretty OP in the East Blue but as they venture into the Grand Line he does start to get his shit rocked a bit more. He develops but it is SLOWWWWWWW, it wasnt until post Marineford I really noticed him making choices/showing restraint he never would've done pre-Marineford. I can def see how his personality can be grating, but coming at it from the perspective that he's viewing his journey as his "adventure," he treats everything lightheartedly because thats what adventures are! He's so certain he'll win and achieve his goals that there's rarely any need to be truly concerned! Idk thats how I look at it. Hope Charlie doesnt drop the show before Waters 7 because Im dying to know his opinion on Franky my beloved.
I think it's a combination of you watching the anime, so you have to sit through a pacing that often is inconsistent and too slow and also that the arcs up till now weren't really the highs that one piece fans remember immediately, but more so really important building blocks for the story in the future.
Death is kinda rare in one piece but that does make the deaths a bit more impactful. Don't really expect chainsaw man levels of character deletion though it's very rare
@@apoptosisduellinks109 but they didnt even say who died? I feel like a very obvious precident was sent from season 1 that characters are going to be dying in the series and usually its pretty unexpected when it does happen
Skypeia is such a rollercoaster in the manga, like I was actually loving every bit out of exploring a sky island. It's one of my favorite parts Oda ever wrote.
This might be only me but I love the entirety of the content from Jaya Island all the way to time skip. It's, in my opinion, peak ficiton. I know a lot of people don't like its pacing and emphasis on Skypiea's history, but I vibed with it heavily. Seen it at least 2.5 times
The Nika fruit and Im-sama reveals, made the arc that much more interesting too. And Enel still my favorite fucking villain XD there's something about that lightning boy with a god complex that gets me every time XD
Skypiea is definitely underrated. If there was a single arc that represents the entirety of One Piece as a whole and what it stands for, it would be this arc.
Yo Charlie, I'm sure youre a busy dude so if you're looking to optimise your time watching one piece, it's worth checking out One Pace. It cuts a lot of the filler reaction shots that the animators put in to pad out time and make it a year long running series, definitely worth it imo!
Your criticisms of the show are valid. I would almost always recommend the manga over the anime, mainly because of the pacing issues the anime has. I'm not saying the manga is perfect, but I found myself really enjoying reading it. I can't wait for the next update Charlie! I hope you start to watch more frequently, because you are starting to get to some of the best arcs in One Piece. Water 7, Enies Lobby, Impel Down, and Marineford. Unpopular opinion, but I believe each arc is better than the last, with Impel Down being my favorite because of how much I enjoyed the concept of the entire arc. Please keep watching Charlie! I don't think you will end up regretting it. Keep it up man 👍
Worst part about one piece isn't the fans or the anti fans, its that people go into a 1000 page epic and read 10% of it thinking they know the entire story and why people love it. Yes 3 episode rule is stupid but people will still follow it cause it works most times. But most stories cant do anything but the hook in a short time and we've seen most hooks with the advent of the internet, it means we need to concede and assume something selling more than almost any comic in the world and over 1000 chapters isnt just trash and overrated. It may not be for us, but we can assume that in 1000 chapters it has more to say than the basic character tropes you assume in the first 10% of the story. Not speaking on the review just in general. Its like reading harry potter (3 ep rule) and getting to him going to the school and thinking "overrated trash, why do people like this boring story about a boy doing nothing but sulking this sucks dropped." and feeling validated, vs reading the entire thing and saying "This was a hero's journey I felt different due to the length and time I put in, glad I didn't just quit cause my tiktok adhd.
