That's right. I've officially sold out by making a top 10 video. Up next is an iceberg video, a tier list video, and a video reading the latest gaming news headlines lol.
But seriously, I really made this video because I just had a lot of Genesis games I wanted to talk about that I knew no one would watch if I made individual videos about them. So by putting them together in this context I could trick you all into watching and getting recommended a bunch of great games. I know, quite a dastardly master plan. If people like this, I might be do similar videos for other consoles.
And yes. I know that it's actually called Revenge of Shinobi, not Shinobi 2. Whatever.
For anyone who wants them, here's links to Streets of Rage 2 New Era and the Bare Knuckle 3 Project. And I'd also recommend checking out Streets of Rage Remake, a fan game that combines the 3 original games together into 1 giant mega game. It's awesome. But I can't provide a link for that one. You're gonna have to find it yourself.

I've said it before, I love how you break down games. I like youtubers that know how to engage you with their perspective and get right down to the point without the fluff. 30 to 40% of the content in other video essays sometimes feel redundant or made out of obligation, as if it was a high school assignment.

Sooo many of them dedicate half the video to simply retelling the entire story of the game/movie in order to pad out the video length. 95% of people watching most likely are already quite familiar with the plot

The Game Gear Shinobi games are amazing as well. It's such a slept-on series considering how good it is. I've also been struggling to find actual good retro beat em ups after playing the SoR series. The closest I've found have been Capcom's Alien Vs. Predator.

Realizing Pulseman isn’t actually a good game was crushing, cause the aesthetics are just so good! The platforming just gets too demanding for how slippery Pulseman can be, so I found the game to be more frustrating than anything else

Really glad to see Rocket Knight on here. I love all three of the games, but yeah you’d be hard pressed to beat the first game with just how amazing it ended up being. Both of the other games are definitely still great, but yeah I think most people would agree the first game is the best one. Glad it is finally getting a rerelease along with both of its sequels with Rocket Knight Resparked, but the way they are handling that release is super weird. Alien Soldier reminds me a bit of things I saw for Freedom Planet specifically the first game's beta-stage Torque campaign where you can choose a set of elemental projectile attacks to swap between before starting a level, and you use the funny elemental tokens that normally are used only in the bonus stage to regain ammo. Some projectiles had and regained more ammo, others were more powerful, if I'm remembering rightly. Unfortunately, Torque's and Spade's campaigns couldn't be finished due to the engine's sprite limitations; a notable example being moving hang-bars in I think it was Thermal Base erroneously having Lilac's scorched cutscene sprites when playing as Spade. Torque's jump ability was also kind of broken in the sense of 06 Omega's hover boosting, but you regenerate meter between button taps and Torque's rocket boots give him enough lift to gain height all the while. Completely breaks Sky Battalion.

I'm curious about where you stand on the Monster Land/Wonder Boy games. I get you might not have included them for their RPG aspects, though they're very simplified in that field because they're also very much like a side-scrolling Zelda Game... I guess like Zelda 2 but actually quite good. I'm only really familiar with Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap and the more recent reboot Monster Boy: The Cursed Kingdom, both of which the player gets turned into some kind of creature, and you unlock other transformation abilities as you progress until finally you gain the ability to resume your human form. There's magic spells you can use in some certain forms too (including your human forms), but they work on a simple ammo system rather than a magic meter - think like how bombs and arrows are done in most Zelda games.

@@Pariah6950 they had to change Monster Boy's title from Monster Boy: The Wizard of Booze to Monster Boy: The Cursed Kingdom. @@Pariah6950 That's unfortunate, but I think part of why I like Hard Corps so much is that it's designed like a Treasure game in a way due to how many bosses there are. For the Rocket Knight Adventures series, every game except the SNES Sparkster has been rereleased on Sega’s Mega Drive collection on Steam. The first game is still the best and most fun one of course, with really good gameplay, though I think the sequels are like you said, still pretty good. I know the Genesis Sparkster gets a bad rap for changing up the controls and relying way more on rocket jumping to a fault. But the SNES Sparkster feels more like a follow up to the original as it has the same control set as that one. Even then it doesn’t have a smooth pace, especially with transitions. And it’s level design is still a bit weak but it’s still very fun. You also didn’t mention the PS3 reimagining/reboot where I never played it but visually it doesn’t look very interesting and the gameplay also looks too slow. But it had some unique ideas to advance the formula, would have liked to see a mention of it.

I am actually surprised you like Rocket Knight Adventures so much since your reviews tend to have a common theme of valuing games that have a big focus on one core gameplay style and maximizing the potential of that said gameplay style. Rocket Knight Adventures flips between multiple different gameplay styles so it might have a similar problem as the Sonic Adventure games where someone really likes the platforming levels and wishes they could play more of those but instead have to split their playthrough going through flying segments and autoscrollers as well.
@Pariah6950

I think it's a game that does variety in the right way. Similar to something like Rayman 2. All of the alternative gameplay modes all still keep the focus on what the game is about. It's still mostly navigating obstacles, killing enemies, and making it to the end. That's why things like the bumper car course in Twinkle Park in SA1 don't bother me. It's not a completely different type of game.

This is not related to this video in particular. It is just a question I think about based on what I’ve seen from your content in general. And that is why do you not like Celeste? The game has a decent challenge level, especially as you dig into 100% it. The controls are really good. When you learn stuff like the wall bounce, neutral jump, wave dashing and etc. you can speed through levels pretty quickly and it’s all skill based. In fact, the game flows beautifully when you are playing it well. There is no lives system or anything like that. Any incentive to do no damage runs is purely on you, and maybe if you want to try for the optional golden berry challenges. Level design is varied and really does start making really good use of the play mechanics and the stage gimmicks as you get into the b and c sides and stuff. I don’t know. I don’t really get it
@Pariah6950
@Pariah6950 9 месяцев назад
Celeste is absolutely the kind of game I should love. It does everything right. But it just never clicked with me. I just don't find the mechanics to be that fun to engage with. Part of that is that the game is mostly very rigidly designed. Each platforming sequence is mostly a series of specific things you have to do in a specific way in a specific order. And I prefer platformers that allow for more creative freedom.
@technicallyinept2120
@technicallyinept2120 9 месяцев назад
@@Pariah6950I’ve seen a talk by one of the lead designers, and they said they deliberately made it a point to to lay down limits some where. They said that if you give a player infinite options about how to approach something, you eventually are going to get to the point that you have no way to challenge them, which makes sense to me. However, they also said they didn’t make it to where you couldn’t come up with ANY solutions of your own. And that is very evident from the movement tech they teach you later on in the game, some of which I mentioned. In speed runs of the game, those are very much put to use in ways that honestly blow my mind when I see them. It does open up a bit. But yeah, generally Celeste is pretty rigid I guess. I don’t mind that, though. In fact, while this may not be saying much since I don’t play that many games, it is probably one of my favorites if not my favorite platformer ever. And I am getting pretty close to 100% it, besides the golden berries which I am honestly, probably not going to attempt.
@Pariah6950
@Pariah6950 9 месяцев назад
@@technicallyinept2120 As a Cloudbuilt fan, I can assure you that you can leave platforming design extremely loose and open and still challenge the player. That's a game where if you know what you're doing you can complete a 2 minute level in 20 seconds. But at the same time, the final bonus level of Super Cloudbuilt is the hardest thing I've ever done in any game. It took me 5 hours to beat that single level.

@@Pariah6950 You brought up that you really like dustforce not too long ago in your sonic like games videos. If you really liked dustforce then I don't see why you you wouldn't like Celeste tbh. Your description of Celeste can basically be applied to dustforce too. Especially the later levels in dustforce which are extremely restrictive, which you were fond of.

@@spacecat275 Dustforce has more fun and unique mechanics. And is also much harder.

The only thing they have in common is the name and the movie they’re based on. They’re completely different games made by different studios.

A game is difficult. Must be like Dark Souls. Castlevania and Revenge of Shinobi are not a bit like Dark Souls.

I can't beat SoR1 on the hardest difficult. I've make through to the 6 level. AI is just too too sneaky and mean. Need also beat solo 2P mode lol. P.S. Speaking of SoR2 I'll also started to appreciate it lately, and beat it sertain amount times on days. (but I don't like on higher difficulty the absurd numbers of enemies and their health bars) P.S.S. Maybe it's because of USB Megadrive gamepad lmao.

I was also born in 95! My very first game was Sonic 1 at a babysitters place, I was so young I could never beat Eggman at the end of the Green Hill Zone lmao My first “own” game experience was probably either Rayman 1 or 2, my mam got me and my older brother a PlayStation 1 with both games, I love them dearly! Anyways, I’m also a big Ristar fan, glad to see it here!

You know well that video games aren't SEGA's strongest suit. A new Rister game that is 3D made by SEGA? I don't have that much confidence in SEGA and the team that made that game. (if I have any)I mean I don't think that a new 3D Ristar game would be good. I don't think 3D platforming games are their strong suit. 2D maybe but not 3D. Also hearing the bad changes in the American version of Street of Rage is something that may make me rant about America being terrible at localizing the games from Japan.

Sega is a lot more than Sonic Team. There are plenty of competent dev teams who could do the job. They could also license it out to an indie developer or small publisher like they did for Streets of Rage 4.
