I have been binge watching all of your vids and this vid here is the best. I'm an old percussion instructor and the drills in this vid relate to learning fast rudiments on a pro level. Percussion is supple quickness just like a good golf swing ( muscles are fired and relaxed rapidly). For example the "long roll rudiment" is learned from an extremely slow tempo and built over time to a lightning fast tempo. When teaching this rudiment to beginners every student trys to go lightning fast right away, but as you can imagine they have zero control of the motion of the sticks (just like club path) and they are all over the place. The magic in learning the long roll is at the slow and fast transitioning tempo (when the stick begins to freely bounce on a snare head). Pushing the tempo faster and faster on a pillow (no bounce allowed) is the only way to gain fast twitch muscle control. Pushing the tempo faster and faster every day for months is the only way to achieve the level of supple quickness and control needed to do this rudiment correctly. To understand better... try this rudiment: Snap your right hand fast and forcefully twice on your chest, then snap your left hand twice. Repeat .. rr ll rr ll rr ll ect and increase the tempo until it sounds like a machine gun....supple quickness is needed.

Great video Steve. What annoying me in playing golf is thinking too much about skills rather than repeating correct routine drill over and over. Tom Hullverson Do the arms and hands cause the body to turn and shift or does the body turning cause the hands to respond? this seems unclear in the video.E.g. long hitting Brooks Koepka's right foot remains flat at the point of impact which would indicate that his arms and hands are causing his hips and body to turn.

Steve, Great stuff as always; but I have a question that maybe you might can answer. I recently (last 6 weeks or so) switched to the Mike Austin/Mike Dunaway style of swing which is how I found you ironically. My iron play has improved drastically (6 iron went from 135 to 160-170 carry and depending on conditions will be 185-190 total for example), but my driver is still short (210-240 and averages about 220) and is cutting at the end. Many times total distance with my 6 iron will be within 30 yards of my average drive. I feel like I’m late in my release with the driver for some reason. I can’t seem to close it down in time to straighten it out even when I make center contact. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you.
@tonyhallum7968

jason barger Thanks. I’ll try that. I have noticed that I’m hitting a lower trajectory with driver lately. Probably related to what you’re suggesting. Thanks!
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
There's a number of reasons that could be. Poor AoA is a definite possibility, agree Jason. Poorly fitting driver is another. You could also have an overly vertical (steep) swing plane and be thin heeling a lot of balls which would make for high spin as well. Feel free to send a video...and a Trackman report. Check out my website if you're interested in a swing analysis.

@CassanoFamily
@CassanoFamily 4 года назад
Tony, NOT an instructor here, just someone who fought with the same issues and saw pretty much the same numbers as you. For me, it was much easier to "get" the swing with clubs that were higher swingweight (i.e., head heavy), and my driver was pretty light. I found an old driver with a soft (senior) shaft, put some lead tape on the head, and practiced with that. Made it a lot easier to "feel" the head release and the face close. Not going to pretend I've mastered the swing, but that helped a lot. Might be worth a try.
@Inmotion70
@Inmotion70 4 года назад
Keep in mind that angle of attack has little to no effect on spin rate. The spin loft of a driver is pretty much baked in. However, many people who do hit down have other mechanical issues going on that often do affect spin...like low heel hits or open face.
