Brendon, I have had issues my entire life Bc of flatter feet. I always end up w awful shin splints and also the inner portions of my knees would get the same pain. To the point where I could t even jog. In the past I Had arches made but I don’t have those anymore. I just buy others I find. I am 215 pounds and made a goal to do a little 5k in November . I’m looking for a shoe that will help those issues. I don’t have a wide foot either ... any recommendations would be great . I’m leaning toward the brooks

@@03US11MC was 217 at one point and the shoes that were game changers for me in regards to shin splints were the New balance Beacon v2, Saicony Endorphin Shift, Asics Glideride. I'm a slow runner and all of these shoes are more medium cushion (not too firm but not super soft), the most miles I run at that time was 4 miles so not a lot of time on foot. These shoes have a good base some are a little heavy but keep me in good alignment. Too squishy can cause instability and lead to shin splints in my case. I hope this helps

Brooks Ghost. A decent neutral alternative for someone who doesn't have pronation issues. I avoid ASICS like the plague - the two I've tried flattened out in the midfoot after a short time, and one just caused untold foot pain. I love the New Balance 1080v10, what worked for me was changing the insoles. Looking to get the Clifton's as my next running shoe.

So glad I found this channel right now - my heaviest was 470 and I'm down to about 310 currently. I started eating healthier a few years ago and started walking a lot. I've had ups and downs, been back to really kicking butt the last few months. Walking is amazing, but it feels restricting depending on the path ahead of you, especially paved, flat or downhill ground; you eventually have to start running at least bits at a time and that's how the obsession begins. That, and taking the same paths and trying to beat your best times! Thank you thank you thank you for making this!!! Exploring shoes has been wild :)

I bought a pair of new balance 608's at well over 320+ lbs just to start walking in. I had never spent any significant amount of money on a shoe but I knew I needed to spring for this, so at 34 I finally did. I was so impressed with the "ride quality" and comfort that for the first time in a long time I WANTED to walk. A few months later I bought a pair of 623's, also very high quality for the price point. I bought a pair of the 557's for the looks not long after, but they were also very comfortable and I jog in them every day now that I am at 290 lbs. If you've never bought a good shoe before you really have no idea what you're missing out on. I've been losing about 5lbs a month and there are no signs of it slowing down, buying a nice pair of shoes has literally changed my life! I can't wait to try out one of these premium running shoes.

After an intense research I decided on the Nike Zoomx Invincible which I've been using for some months now. The cushion is great, yet the downside is a lack of stability in the upper part. The very light and permeable material together with the significant and cushion induced height of the shoe result in a feeling of instability where my ankles feel loose and non-supported. As a result they get some work to do to balance it all out. Can well imagine that an enforced upper shoe would hold the feet in place delivering more stability.

I had a gap in my rotation since all my shoes are speed oriented, so I’ve had trouble keeping myself slow enough on easy days, I hate mushy midsoles but found a long run shoe that finally agrees with me in the Glycerin19. I’m a neutral runner (and very light weight) but even the neutral version is very stable, and of course now Brooks offers a mild stability version of their flagship neutral models such as the Launch and Glycerin. It’s $150 US but very comfortable, feels quite light compared to its plushest competitors, has a nice bouncy responsiveness for a cushion shoe so isn’t as energy sapping for me. You might want to get Brooks to send you this model to review since it’s evidently a huge improvement over the last iteration.
@BrendonCamm
@BrendonCamm 3 года назад
I'd like to try the Glycerin, I actually almost picked it up but had to choose between the Glycerin and Glide Ride 2 - went with GR2 :) You know, I've never had a company send me anything to review I'm not even sure how I would go about doing that! I (maybe naively) assumed that perhaps if a rep from a company comes across my work that they may reach out. Thank you again for tuning in!

You deserve to get some shoes sent to you, but I wouldn’t have any idea how that gets generated. I am over a 300 pound man that is also a healthcare worker on his feet 12+ hours a day. Oh, I wanted a good pair of shoes, so I first tried Brooks and they did not feel like they had much cushion and I was pressing through the cushion and standing on the ground. I exchanged them for hookah Bondi eight for the cushion however, at the 4 foot they were too narrow and I was actually stepping on the hard soul of the shoe. Then I tried the new balance walking shoes which are wide enough for my wide forefoot but again, they do not feel like they have very much cushion. I do not pronate at all and I have a neutral foot, but any review on overweight people talk about a stability issue for pronators, which I am not a pronation foot is very uncomfortable, because I am not a pronator. the Nike cushioning sounds great however, I have never in my life been able to wear Nike shoes because their toebox is too small and causes blisters on my small toe. I am not sure what other shoes to look at. I have been to the shoe store and tried on many different ones that was an actual running store and they measured my feet, etc., but that did not seem to help.

I just ordered a set of Nike Pegasus 37 for a better, softer shoe, while still giving myself versatility as I grow. I’ve been running for a little over 3 months now and am running some pretty decent distances and ALMOST acceptable times, haha, but stability hasn’t been an issue with me since I grew up very athletic. What are your thoughts on the Pegasus 37? I haven’t heard anything but praise for them, and my set will be here in a couple days.

Hey Travis!! That's awesome that you've gotten into a running habit - it gets addicting. I haven't personally tried the Pegasus 37 but like you I have heard a lot of great praise for them. @@BrendonCamm Thanks for the response and encouragement! I know I’m going to eventually have a few different running shoes, and a ZoomX based shoe is next on my list. I just think the Pegasus 37 will be a really good all around shoe as I start adding more and more miles. When I start breaking 10k consistently, I’ll probably need to step it up to a softer, long distance shoe. My ultimate goes is to run ultras, eventually, so consistently adding mileage is my current goal!
@ielle.
@ielle. 3 года назад
@@DJBuckEQ I haven't ran in the Pegasus (I'm a Saucony gal, personally, and the Pegasus just didn't agree with my feet especially my narrow heel when I tried them on in a store) but they're an extremely popular shoe for the exact reason that they're very compatible with people just starting out not sure exactly what they want in a shoe, and versatile enough that people stick with them as the mileage workhorse in their rotations even when they have other shoes for more specific types of runs. From what people who have run in them have said, the Pegasus is capable of long training runs, you just wouldn't want to race anything long in them, or race anything in them, ideally, though maybe for a first race at a given distance focusing on completion rather than chasing PRs it might not be a big deal. As long as you don't do too much too soon too fast and replace them once the midsoles bottom out they should be fine for a while. As Brendon experienced, as well as I and many other runners, sometimes what works in a shoe today doesn't work tomorrow, whether it's due to having lost weight, deriving more strength from your body so that you can handle less stable platforms, imbalances or injuries that subtly alter your gait, collapsed arches in some cases, differences in the accommodations we need in a shoe as our bodies age and lose muscle mass, etc. Some people find themselves adjusting what type of heel-to-toe drop they run in. Some people find more stack height to be more unstable for them and want more ground feel. There are so many preferences because no two bodies are the exact same, and I find the best recommendations help with criteria in direct response to what a runner's issues are more often than pinpointing specific shoes (though certainly very helpful at times, just harder to nail). It sounds like the Pegasus meets a lot of your criteria, so here's to hoping they meet your expectations as well! Run in whatever makes you feel good while you're out there, enjoy the ride and figure out through experimentation what the limits of a particular shoe are for you, and go from there.
@DJBuckEQ
@DJBuckEQ 3 года назад
@@ielle. thank you for the informative post! I’ve put about 15 miles into the Pegasus so far and they’re breaking in nicely. Initially for whatever reason they caused a lot of muscle soreness along my calves, but I seem to have adapted and they’re pretty good right now. Ran a new single mile PR (probably more on me than the shoes, but they did well) and have been slowly building up the distance in them. They seem like mostly what I expected. Good all around shoes, but favoring faster running more than I expected. I might still need a slow, squishy shoe, but I’m fine for the time being! I’m sure I’ll continue to get used to them and break them in for a while longer, so I’ll probably have different thoughts on them next week! As for fit, they are a little tight in the toe box, but do fit, just not as loose as I like. Something for me to keep an eye on.
@ielle.
@ielle. 3 года назад
@@DJBuckEQ I'm glad it's working out for you so far! Nikes seem to run narrow in the toe box for a lot of people, for whatever reason. The Nike Free RN used to rub off the nail on my pinkie toe. Then again, it wasn't just an issue of narrowness, but I also hadn't sized up. Even a half size can be a big difference with regard to losing toenails, blistering, and the minor but annoying things that pop up. Soreness is really common early on and as you get more experience and the body adapts to the stress more your recovery will become quicker. Your calves are probably just not used to the stress being placed on them. When looking for your next shoe, I definitely wouldn't go with anything that has lower than an 8mm drop. The Pegasus is a 10mm drop, which is somewhat high but most shoes tend to have an 8-10mm drop. A lower drop will place more stress on the achilles, calves, ankles, basically the lower leg, muscles and tendons. A higher drop will place more stress on the joints like your hips and knees. So, basically, there's a trade-off, and when people have soreness consistently in particular areas, sometimes changing the drop of the shoe is a way of addressing it, redistributing the stress to the parts of that person's body which are better able to take the load on. For whatever reason, just having a 10mm drop shoe on my feet feels weird to walk or lightly jog in (never tried actually running in a 10mm due to this), but that may be because I land much more on my forefoot, whereas someone who runs more often on their rearfoot would do well with the extra heel cushion. If you were to ever develop hip and knee pain and think that it's not just errors in training but possibly due to footwear choice, that would be a time to look into lowering the drop. It's a matter of finding what works for you, and most beginners tend to have better luck with higher drop shoes because their lower leg hasn't developed a lot of strength. There's more info here, if you're interested: runrepeat.com/guides/heel-to-toe-drop If you're looking for a slow and squishy shoe that wasn't mentioned in this video, I know that Saucony's Triumph is a really popular recovery (slow) shoe for getting in the miles. It's said to be extremely plush and with an 8mm drop it would be only a small difference from the 10mm drop your legs are getting used to. I haven't run in it myself, and can't see myself trying it any time soon because it's also said to not be so great breathability-wise and it's only about to get hotter over the next several months, but I figure I'll probably try it at some point as my goal is to start doing 70 mpw later this year and I'll need to be even more protective of my legs to do that. Within Nike, I know the Invincibles are a popular shoe, but then you can just refer to Brendon's video on this point lol. A lot of people love the ZoomX midsole. Those are a 9mm drop, so similar to the Pegasus you've been using in that regard.
@rxonmymind8362

For heavy runners I'd recommend no less than 36mm heal. I find that with 32 mm I'm compressing the heal fully when I run. So Nike ZoomX Invincibles is my go to. As for it feeling a little sloppy on top I'd recommend going on RU-vid and seeing the different lacing methods to help lock them down. I have a high bony Arch on top of my foot so the traditional crisscross method didn't work for me. Anyway great review and looking forward to getting the Next % Vaporfly or something with 38-40mm heal. Oh and 2 mm equals roughly one US nickel in width.

I'm looking to get back into running again, and it seems like all of the shoe reviews value marshmallow softness and light weight, but I am concerned that a shoe that is too spongy will just raise my center of gravity and have my foot displacing a lot of foam in unwanted directions. At what point is a shoe too plush for a heavy runner, or am I asking the wrong question?
@BrendonCamm
@BrendonCamm 2 года назад
Hey John! That's a great question, I don't have a really good answer for it unfortunately. I personally think it comes down to personal preference and your biomechanics. For me, if a shoe is just too squishy and doesn't have any type of support I can't wear it because my ankles/feet are too weak and it causes other muscles to overcompensate. I like a shoe that is relatively soft, but not extremely flexible. A shoe that comes to mind that you may want to look at if you don't want extreme softness is the Nimbus Lite 2, that's a shoe with a nice wide base so it's a little more stable and the foam isn't really soft!
