Instagram- AdamTheWooATW I do realize it’s winter and that has a lot to do with low crowds but is Atlantic City better when it’s warm ? Not talking amount of people just the vibe .
I live about 30 minutes away and we avoid it at all costs. Crime has absolutely skyrocketed in the past 10 years. Sucks, we used to go there all the time. Unfortunately it's gone super downhill. We will occasionally go there for concerts or conventions or the rainforest Cafe haha but basically we get to where we're going and then go straight home lol
I was raised in California and moved to NJ fifteen years ago to work at a tv network. I've come to really love NJ and must tell you: come back to the shore during the Summer! AC is an acquired taste-- but visit other (incredible) places Ocean City, Cape May, Spring Lake, Atlantic Highlands, Asbury Park, Red Bank for a truly great waterside experience!
I did the opposite, and moved to California, and it was like when things went from black and white to color in Wizard of Oz. And, I couldn't imagine ever going back to stinky old NJ.
In the summer, the run down nature of the city is somewhat masked by the greenery, blue skies and crowds that visit. But in winter, the mask comes off and you see what AC is: an old northeast city, with a lot of crime and homelessness, wrecked by politicians and years of mismanagement, along with past casino-owners who bled their businesses (and people) dry before leaving. There are some bright spots - the owner of the Showboat is building an indoor waterpark just off the boardwalk; some of the casinos/hotels have invested money in refreshing their properties for the first time in years; Tanger Outlets are usually busy on weekends, even in winter. And in the summer, when the water and skies are blue, trees are green, and sun is warm, the boardwalk gets quite busy. Timing is an important factor in deciding when to visit AC, and what type of experience you'll have.
Well said. AC used to be a great place, but now it's struggling. I went last year and noticed that things are starting to transition into more of a family destination, rather than just gambling. Hopefully it can back to it's once great experience.
Also a Dave & Busters will open this year to reinforce the family theme.. The Feds gave AC $6 millions to start to rebuild the board walk.. Bader Fields development is in the works.. Furthermore AC's credit worthiness got an upgrade recently. The State of New Jersey is overseeing the city's finance..
As a NJ native, and someone who works in the City, you definitely came during off season. The entire vibe shifts. The streets and boardwalk come to life. As others have mentioned, AC is much more of an "adult" destination, with the majority of entertainment being the casinos and nightlife. You should come back to the shore after Memorial Day, but I'd recommend Ocean City (about 30 mins south of AC) or Wildwood. The boardwalks there have more activities geared towards families and are even busier than AC gets. If you're ever in AC again though, you should try out Tony's Baltimore Grill for some pizza, they have been on Atlantic Ave. since 1927, nearly 100 years. Best pizza in the city, imo.
@@col.cottonhill6655 No one? Try again. Tons of people go "down the Shore" (nobody Says "to the Shore" in NJ) in Winters. I had done that for Years when I was in NJ. Also, there ARE less people not there's.
I was born and raised there. I lived there from 1960 to 1996. I went back for my son's wedding 2 years ago and honestly the state that AC is in made me cry. I am SO grateful I lived there in very good times and cherish the memories😮
Born & raised in NJ now living in FL breaks my heart to see what Atlantic City has become. 20 years ago it was always a fun trip. Hurricane Sandy did some damage and the economy crashed it worse. Not to mention the winter is the worst time to visit the Jersey shore in general.
Up until Casinos came in 80 AC was a bad place. Low income and a boardwalk that wasn't comparables to the other's in the state. I was born and raised in south jersey.
They’re actually bringing family entertainment there. New arcade and indoor waterpark. It’s February not the summer. We took my son there in july last year and he loved it.
Really cool! My mother grew up in Atlantic City and went to the steel pier almost every day after school. She saw the Three Stooges doing their comedic routines to guests on the pier. The boardwalk has definitely past it's peak and is in severe decline. We rarely return since my grandmother passed.
Adam…I live in NJ during the summer. Yes AC is a sad relic of the past. If you visit much north to Monmouth County, NJ you will see a much better area….Sea Grit, Point Pleasant, Spring Lake ( one of the nicest beach towns on the entire east coast)…..these towns are gems year round especially during the summer. So many places to eat and beautiful beaches and broadwalks.
Hi Adam 👋. Definitely the winter and mid-week will affect the experience. But more than anything else, Atlantic City's success in the 80s and 90s was due to the prosperity of those times. Regular folks within driving distance had disposable income that they could afford to risk in the casinos, and AC boomed. Other than a couple years prior to corona, there has not been the kind of prosperity that can support a booming Atlantic City. People have to prioritize their spending, and for most, gabling is a lower priority. It's sad to see it like this. The 80s was the greatest!
All East Coast beach towns have a different vibe in the winter, but especially Atlantic City. I went to AC for the first time last summer and had a great time. Everyone was friendly, the boardwalk was bustling, and it was a good experience.
Hey Adam! Local here. I’ve enjoyed your videos. Definitely wanna check out this area in the Summer as opposed to now. If you do return, I’d highly recommend the Wildwood Boardwalk (one of the biggest & best, I gotta believe), along wit’ the doo wop feel of the town, & I also think that you’d really like the Victorian look of Cape May just below it, which lays claim as the country’s oldest seashore resort town. Thanks always for the entertainment…:~)
Morning Adam! Sorry you visited during the off season. I am shocked that Ripleys is closed! We were just there in August. I had no idea they had closed. Glad we got one last visit in. Hoping to run into you tomorrow. If I'm right I think we will be in the same place tomorrow.
You should have gone to Ocean City,NJ..It is 10 miles south of Atlantic City ..But yet again this isn't the time to go as it is winter and many establishments are shut until April/May... Atlantic City is pretty much a no go anytime of the year due to high crime/drugs.
I really like your honest opinion about Atlantic City and hopefully, things there will get better in time because Atlantic City keeps reinventing itself as many times before and always keeps a faithful and steady crowd. By the way you have a wonderful speaking voice and I could listen to you all day long! Keep up the good work!!
It's nice to see you in my neck of the woods. I live in a couple towns over and I have to say that Atlantic City isn't what it used to be. The expansion of casinos in other states really put a hurt on tourism and the decline of the city does not make it the destination it once was. Visiting in the Winter vs. The summer is a bit of a different experience as there is much more to see and do. I'm not sure how much you know about the town, but a few places you went by are some famous landmarks. The Steel Pier used to be the home of the diving horses that were featured in the movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken". The lighthouse is the Absecon Lighthouse and I believe you can still climb the steps to the top. The cheesecake you ate was probally made with an Atlantic City Sub roll, which imo are the best in the nation. There are many other shore towns that are a better representation of the Jersey Shore and I would recommend coming back during the warmer months. Brigantine (which is over a bridge that connects to A.C.) Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood, and the historic town of Cape May are beautiful and better kept! I don't know how much longer you are going to be in the area but I would recommend going back that way and visiting Lucy The Elephant (the world's largest elephant) in the nearby shore town of Margate and at least going down to Cape May to see the S.S. Atlantus (a concrete ship that got grounded and sunk in the waters at Cape May Point) and to see the historic homes and structures of the town. We also have an old historic town called Batsto in Hammonton that you can visit and walk through all year round that's about half the distance to A.C. Thanks for visiting. It was nice to see you up this way!
I totally agree. I hope one day he comes back down to the better parts of South Jersey. Meaning Cape May County lol born and raised in CMC and I love where I live so much history and better maintained and great to visit any time of year but better during the regular season.
Been a while since I have commented on one of your videos - At night i used to pull up the disney app and look at the wait times for rides - it made me feel good to imagine all the people there having fun, even though i was far away just knowing that the sights and sounds were happening hundreds of miles from me made me feel good. Thats how I feel about your content. I know the Woo is out there, adventuring - thanks dude! Join you? I shall
Love it! The video you did with Dan Bell was epic!! Two of my favorite RU-vidrs together!! Glad to see him doing videos again. You should join in with him on a ADR episode. I would love to see that!!
It looked so depressing how sad. Looked abit lonely out there Adam. Here's to more happier adventures. Unfortunately, we have many places that look like this now out of seasons. The song qoutes were the best!Love from 🇬🇧
AC is without a doubt a city that thrives in the summer - the city of AC itself is a little rough but if you drive down south about 2 miles it's really freaking beautiful. Tony Boloney's is fantastic.
I really enjoyed the vlog, but now I’m a little sad for the area. I visited the Steel Pier as a child, and the town was bustling! Of course, that was during the summer. I hope the beach/town can make a comeback as a family oriented place to visit.
Hello Adam. Checking off places you wanted to visit is good even though it wasn't as you expected. Onward to your next city... safe travels. Have a wonderful weekend our friend. ❤️ Bizebeegranny Jeanne and Dave Rose from Wickenburg, Arizona ❤️ ⚘️❤️
You hit the nail right on the head there Adam, "I don't think I've ever had a bad Cheese Steak", my very first was at Disney's All Star Music Resort waaaaay back in 1998 and it was GOOD.
Visiting Atlantic City in winter is going to be a totally different experience than summer. Memorial Day to Labor Day is the real only time the jersey shore has people. They often board the places up in the off seasons , very common
Hi Adam! Sorry your trip was disappointing, although your content never is! I have a few of my favorite 80's movies filming locations I'd like you to add to your list. I'm sure you'd enjoy doing them as much as I'd enjoy watching. Thanks for all you do! Stripes, Spies Like Us, Funny Farm, Who's Harry Crumb, Fletch to name just a few! LOL... You do such a good, accurate and detailed videos of filming locations, I love it when you hold up the screen shots on the clipboard and show us how the scene looked in the movie/show... Thanks again!
The Crunch of the Philly Cheesesteak got me! You went in bad month, summertime best, but again ALL isn’t what it used to be, I go to CAESars once a month for years on end! 21:06 Best time was before casinos when it was really tourists coming to enjoy the beach, hotels. Husband and I would go horse backing riding in morning on beach.. They had loads of Auction houses with chairs set up outside so you could bid on items, That IRENES you passed was a great little shop for fun items. Grab bags for ,50-1,00, Around the corner was a BINGO hall where I would always be shouting BINGO as I won 5 or 10$, GREAT MEMORIES THERE and still making in casinos, ❤️☕️🐿️
Walked that same part of the boardwalk many times, stayed at Resorts several times, many good memories with a good friend - but times have changed. Btw, the voice I heard in the background belongs to a lady who’s been singing on the boardwalk for decades! That warmed my heart!
It is better in the summer. My husband and I used to drive down to AC from Massachusetts about once a year but we haven't been there for several years. It looks like we won't be in a hurry to return anytime soon. Other spots on the coast are still fun, though. Enjoy your vids!!!
It sucks cause he should have somebody show him around, some of the cool stuff. It's a shame he didn't go in any of the other casinos because they have some interesting stuff also. The ocean casino is crazy cool.
Thanks for the video, Adam. Sad to see how AC has fallen. I used to go quite often. I remember when they built the Ripley’s Museum. The building was originally a hotel. I don’t remember the name, but it was closed down before my time. When I first saw it someone had painted several Mer-people on it.
For a future visit, the Showboat Casino is now a giant arcade with an indoor go kart rink and soon the largest indoor waterpark in the US. The inside of the Tropicana is a must-see, cool indoor palazzo area and mall. Whitehouse Subs and Tony's Baltimore Grill are the best for local faire. A quick trip to Lucy the Elephant would also be up your alley!
It will NOT be the largest indoor Waterpark in the US- that title belongs to DreamWorks Waterpark at American Dream. It's only going to be the largest indoor/outdoor BEACHFRONT waterpark. Vererrryyyy different. Even Kalahari- which was the biggest before American Dream is way bigger.
This is amazing man. I love Atlantic City and you went by my favorite spots! I'd say you'd enjoy it a Lil more with the blue sky vibe...but it is an awesome and unique town. Like Niagara without Falls.
It is definitely much more exciting to go in the summer ☀️. We only go for the casino and concerts . that boardwalk was so packed last August, you could not even walk through the crowd . Wish you would have gone to Cape May, a beautiful charming shore town
great stuff! You're so good at pointing out ordinary things you encounter and making them something we want to watch. I've never been to ATL City either. There was a movie called "Atlantic City" with Burt Lancaster in it (1980).
You went during the wrong season. I watched a video by Along For The Journey on RU-vid and they filmed their Atlantic City video 5 months later after you in July and man A.C. was looking really good and alive! I'm thankful that I was able to see your video for the winter and theirs for the summer. It's definitely a seasonal town but worth the visit.
Adam's narration has such a calming effect on me. It's almost meditative. Somehow the combination of the footage and his voice is so wholesome. I should watch at least one Adam The Woo video a day, for a restored sanity and peace of mind. Adam, you're a master of your profession.
We went to Atlantic City in 2016 and we were very disappointed in the city too! It was very ruin down and looked really bad. It was not what we were expecting. We love your videos!
It would have been so much better for you if you had visited Atlantic City or any of the shore areas May - September. I'm sure you would have enjoyed White House Subs on Artic Ave or Tony's Baltimore Grill on Atlantic Ave. And for a nice Italian dinner you would enjoy Angelo's Fairmount Tavern on Fairmount & N Mississippi Ave. The summer resorts are so much nicer when you can enjoy them with nice people and families around. You're always welcome to come back.
It was 20-25 degrees above normal for adams visit , so I think he’s confused why it’s so dead. It was abnormally warm for his visit, normal February it’s freezing at the shore the breeze off the ocean make it feel incredibly cold. The jersey shore is dead cause it’s normally impossible to sit out like he did , very unusual weather. It’s way colder feeling at the ocean cause the Atlantic is so cold .
I've been to AC numerous times. 1 time we stayed at the Sheraton there we saw so many gorgeous woman in the lobby and then on the boardwalk and wondered hey what's up with all this. It was the weekend of The Miss America Pageant. Good times. Nice vlog Adam!
Should have checked out White House Subs, many celebrities have visited and taken photos there since the 40s. And yeah, bad timing for sight seeing, come back in spring/summer and check out surrounding towns near there. Much more to see and do. But in the end, its still Jersey lol
Adam, did you try White House Subs? It was across the street from the Ducktown mural. A super famous place to go, so many celebs have eaten there over the years. Tons of pics on the wall. I ate there when I was there last year. So good!
I love the Jersey Shore. I have grandparents out there that I usually visit every year in a little township called Forked River, about 45 minutes north of Atlantic City. Just south of the city is Margate City, home to Lucy the Elephant, one of the oldest roadside attractions in the country. I have covered it on my channel. Such a bizarre, but fascinating landmark. Also in the area are some of the properties that are on the Monopoly game board, such as Marven Gardens.
You could've gone to see Lucy the Elephant. It's the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America. They also have a replica at Disney's BoardWalk Inn.
The shine has long since worn off the casinos and the shiny shovels the politicians used for their photo ops. Those clowns are enjoying their kickback driven paydays while the occupants of the city are left with the aftermath.
When I was in Atlantic City for the first time in June, 2021, Ripley's wanted $42 for a single ticket. I kept walking. Not surprising they went out of business.
Adam Sorry you did not have a good experience in Atlantic City. I Live in NJ and there are other boardwalks to see as well. Go to Seaside and Point Pleasant, they are nice. Happy Travels.
Lived in NJ most of my life you are better visiting either seaside heights or some of the paranormal locations to see something "fun". Atlantic city is kind of like a symbol of the run down nightmare of what this state has become.
Reminds me of some English coastal towns that used to be thriving when I was a kid back in the 80’s. What with the financial crash, Covid and the fact that people choose to spend their vacations abroad, it’s no wonder places like this suffer.
Hey Adam. Welcome to the North East. Best time to visit Atlantic City is in the summer months. AC has seen better days for sure. Hopefully when Showboat opens the water park over the summer this will get better.
Omgosh, Adam - you had our mouths watering with the Philly cheesesteak and pork sandwich yesterday. We got ourselves a Jersey cheesesteak tonight for dinner! Our rolls are definitely better than the one we saw you had on today’s episode!! You’ll have to check out Collingswood or Haddonfield while you’re in South Jersey - they have some great restaurants!! The Pub is really good, too - near Cooper River Park.
We get our Philly cheesesteaks from a franchise called Jersey Mike's. It originated in Point Pleasant, NJ, in 1956. It's really good! Glad they opened one up in our town here in Oklahoma. I'd love to go to Philadelphia someday just to taste an authentic cheesesteak. Enjoying your current series of vids there in the NE!
AC has changed so much. I remember spending summers in Avalon NJ back in the late 70's and 80's, we would take trips to AC to see the boardwalk. It was so much fun back then. All the casinos were pretty much active back then. I took a trip back there in 2021, and it wasn't so great.
Hey! I'm from NJ born and raised, I highly recommend visiting Ocean City NJ in the summertime!! AC's beach/boardwalk, in my opinion, has always been rundown and boring compared to the other NJ shores. AC mainly pulls in an older audience due to the casinos and nightlife scene, which limits its marketability since other nearby beaches like OCNJ are family oriented. OCNJ, my personal favorite, has TONS of activities day and night for all ages, and the island town itself is so vibrant. Great video!
@@MoviemaniaNick I’ve only briefly been to AC to see the lighthouse and check out a haunted attraction which had been unceremoniously closed and replaced by a sundries shop.
I saw Chicago Transit Authority at the Steel Pier back in '68 when I was 5. Me and Dad. Great show. You can put ketchup on your cheesesteak. Also good with chips or fries. Cheers!
I indelibly associate Atlantic City with the 1980 film of the same name, starring Susan Sarandon and Burt Lancaster. It still has has the same vibe over 40 years later.
I live about 40 minutes north of AC in NJ and its not great this time of the year. Everything is pretty much closed until summer unless you want to to to the casinos or going to see a show. Some great venues for concerts. If you are still in the area go to Margate and see Lucy the Elephant.
I was there during the same time and left sat. FEB 18TH. I actually parked in the $5 lot you passed going up the ramp to the boardwalk. LOL Shore life is a dud during the winter for sure. The summer is MUCh better. Everything is open, plenty to do and more people. There are also other shores that are WAY better then AC. I tried Toney Bologneys there too and ordered the ducktown sub which was delicious. Love your video.
It is sad to see how run down the city looks. I was there about 10 years ago in the summer and it was not looking that great then. I hope something can be done to revitalize the boardwalk and the city! As a kid we would go there and it was an awesome place when it was active and busy... that was even before the casinos took over! Safe travels Adam!
Also, cape may is full of history. They do guided candlelight walking tours, show you haunted places and give a lot of history. Really cool place to visit.
Come back in July. Completely different. AC is not a 365 day a year vacation spot like the Orlando area is. Also if you want a really good cheesesteak go to Donkeys in Camden.
I have never been to Atlantic City. Seems sad but it is winter! Love to see it in the summer. Thank you Adam for sharing! It’s not like you to dislike much.
I'm from a very small town in Ireland and my town is now starting to look like this. Most of the pubs have closed and half of the shops. This is since the plandemic yet our government tells us our economy never was better. Also there never used to be drugs and they are becoming common among the young people here now.
Hi Adam, nice video. AC looks kinda sad in the winter. Maybe it’d be better in the summer, it’s been decades since my one and only visit. You did trigger a different memory though. There was a sandwich shop in the sports book area of the then Las Vegas Hilton. It was very proud of the Atlantic City bread the flew in constantly to make their 9” heros. If memory serves as it was a long time ago, it was a delicious crusty long roll which made for a great sandwich. Maybe from the same bakery your lunch was sourced from?? I tell you, that sandwich you had looked great.
We would go to AC every winter for the antique and classic car auction. The auction was in the old convention center right on the boardwalk. Auction moved to the new convention center maybe twenty years ago. I really miss that winter vacation.
And everyone from down south moves up north..lol..n the ppl from up north that go down south, definitely almost always leave n go back north.. south sucks fr..idk what you're talking about
I'll give you my honest impression. I feel for you because clearly you were somewhat out of your element here, and it takes a courageous soul to try places that are the polar opposite (in some respects) than what they're used to. You took it in stride and shared your observations of the environment. Clearly you had not yet acclimated to it yet. I understand the acclimation process well. I left for New York December 21st and drove the entire way from Los Angeles. Stayed in some very sweet places along the way such as Sayre Oklahoma, Jerome Arizona, Kingston Tennessee which is where I checked out the 1000 foot super smoke stacks they have at the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant. When I arrived to New York at my mother's house, my first instinct was to sleep around 13 hours a day for a week straight. In week two I finally started to feel "normal" again. By week three it was time to drive back to LA. A nice town in Jersey that's close to where you were is Woodbury. There's a place there I checked out called The Nerd Mall, which made me feel like a big kid because it had a lot of my favorite childhood toys and video games. Not too far from Philly is Fighters heaven, where Muhammad Ali had his training camp, and is now basically a museum which pays homage to him and his legacy. Anyway, challenging oneself is the only way forward. I like the cold weather because it slaps me in the face with reality. But, it's definitely an adaptation process.
My Grandmother used to rent a home on the Jersey shore every year--it was the family reunion site from the mid 70s to late 80s. You could see the decline--every year more and more places closed, less and less vendors and hucksters lining the boardwalk. Casinos starting to close as they failed one by one. I think it was a simple thing--there were more and more options. When it became cheaper to just fly out to Vegas, or Disney for that matter, NJ just didn't look as good. Shows like "Jersey Shore" didn't do it any favors either.
Never been...on my list because of Bruce, too. So my first experience of Atlantic City was today, vicariously through Adam. This, and I've always wanted to see a show at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, and see the Quick Stop from the movie Clerks. I love the cold, but I wonder when would be the best time of year to actually come? The Boardwalk looks all boarded up right now...but maybe everything that dies someday comes back...I like to think so....at the end of every hard-earned day people find some reason to believe... 💚
Most people come between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but even so, there's not a whole lot to do unless you are going to the casinos or seeing a show or something. Highly recommend Ocean City boardwalk or Wildwood if you're looking for something fun to do during the summer.
You were driving like 5 mins by my house!! I was so shocked to see Cooper River park lol. Also grew up 15 mins from AC - you definitely came during the off season. You shoulda tried White Horse subs and Baltimore Grill for pizza.
In all the years that I lived in Philadelphia, I've only been to Atlantic City roughly 3 times and the only thing I loved about it was when the Planter's Peanut Store was roasting peanuts and Mr. Peanuts was outside meeting everyone. When the casinos came, I hated the city even more. My favorite Jersey shore was and still is Wildwood, N.J. Even in the winter months, the boardwalk is closed however right next to Wildwood is Cape May, N.J. which is open and has all the beautiful Victorian houses with their gingerbread. I love this town. Summer and winter, this town delivers.
Welcome to NJ. Sadly, you came at the quiet time of the year. Much more active on the boardwalk in the summer. The pizza there is fantastic. Worth a second visit to try if you come back.
Remember coming to Atlantic City in 1960s, so crowded boardwalk, mr peanut, salt water taffy places, steel pier, postcards, all the little shops selling cool stuff, people wearing their Sunday best on the boardwalk, really a fun place to be big convention hall where miss America was held, memories good.n.j. Has great shore towns also.
Sorry it was not the best trip. Atlantic City can be disappointing. Did you at least notice all of the streets which the Monopoly game properties are named after? Something interesting at least.
Atlantic City was promised so much when the casinos where built in the seventies! They had a monopoly of gamblers visiting in the 70 through the 90s.( pun intended) The city was forgotten in those years for redevelopment when they had the Taxes coming in to the treasury. Then legal gambling opened up across the country. I go there 2 times a month at list point in the season. Atlantic City still has the will to survive and hasn’t given up! It stil gets its visitors from across the pond and New Yorkers and the other big cities across nj. Pa Del! I enjoyed your visit to Philadelphia. The cheese stake is a awesome sandwich that has a lot to do with the roll. The bread down south can’t hold a candle to north east bread. That’s why hoagies are so good also!
