rob, what kind of optic mount would you recommend for my new century btf 47, was looking at your store, a few too choose from ( new to the ak rifle) , love your videos, very informative thanks steve.
Thank you Rob for another excellent video! These are all good advice for anyone that is new to AKs. Even for experienced AK shooters its well worth a watch. Keep up the great work!
Always good advice -- I was running a 1x6 on my SAR-1. Worked well at close and long range. Experimenting now with 1x4 (lightweight classic Leupold LPVO) and then offset PA microdot. Will run it in a few 2 gun matches to see if it is better setup than the 1x6. 6 power is better than 4 but the weight of the 1x6 is much greater. Always trade-offs -- that is why it is better to have more than 1 gun with different setups!
Great info as always. I have been heavily into AK for a few years now (you are a big enabler). They have a special place in my heart and I kick my self every day for spending money on higher end ARs instead of Russian SLRs back in the day. That said as a GWOT vet who was teethed on the AR platform and has spent much of his life behind it I am having a hard time bridging the idea that the AK will be my primary platform if and when “Scenario X” comes to pass. So my AKs are still being set up for collector, range, and field purposes sans any night fighting capability.
AKs are where its at. I too am in the service (though im not a veteran) where i train with M4s and other NATO platforms a lot. But when given a choice the AR platform is kinda boring and bland to me. The AK is just more exotic and interesting to my taste. Therefore my collection is centered around my AKs. My ARs are largely sidelined but i still shoot them every once in a while.
@@dankim7488 I agree that shooting the AK is just “more fun” and interesting. As someone who is currently serving you are a leg up on knowing the platform. I just kind of struggle with how much tome to devote to each platform in my limited resource environment (with time being the least of my resources) as well as the basic assumption that should “Scenario X” ever happen the AR is the platform I would grab if for no other reason logistics. I am curious what Rob’s thoughts here are given that he is a “master” of both platforms as well as a current service member.
@@wyorca I’ve spent alot of time contemplating this, as well (ie how to much to specialize in one caliber/platform). What’s worked really well for me is alternating between 5.56x45 (M4/AR15) and 7.62x39 (AKM) on a weekly basis. So, If I go to the range 1x per week, I’ll put 100 rounds through the AR one week and 100 rounds through the AK the next week. Combine this with dry fire practice 4-5 days per week (alternating between AK and AR each day) and you should be able to make great progress with both platforms. You can adjust as necessary if you want to focus moreso on one platform. Hope this is a helpful starting point!
You are AWESOME!!! My two cents. First, get a "MOUNT RISER" for your optics on your multi cam AK so that you don't have to kink your neck down and you can be on target faster. Next, MOVE your optic down the AK after the rear sight where you should have rails to attach your optic on your multi cam AK. Also, when you move your optics down after the rear sight, you will see much more. Love AKs!!!)) 👍👍👍👍
Good to see the minimalist approach. Mantra of "less is more" is applicable in combat conditions, and Russian recon troops in most cases state that all the add-ons make the rifle heavier and more likely to snag on things. The less unnecessary equipment added the better.
yup. dont need all that extra for the trenches. just some need more room for grenades. have you been watching any of those videos? I just started and yeah no way man, I am not built like that. shoutout to those guys.
@@TheFloridaBikeVlogger Depending on the mission the soldier won't even be that big or carry a huge load. Recon guys are normally not massively built body-wise. They also carry a relatively light load as they need to be able to bug out FAST. Fire exchange is the last of what they want. Guys that do assault they would be larger and with more weapons hanging on them.
I am upset I am subbed and it didn't notify me of this vid. I'm still doing research on getting a ak and I think I am gonna go for m77 zas. Thanks for the great info as always. Yeah really like the look of both of those ak you showed.
I really like my zastava M77 (just got it) so I think it's an excellent choice. Mine has the "battle worn" wood, it's not bad I just keep coating it with boiled linseed oil and rubbing it in so it looks pretty good. I put a red star trigger in it and it has a great two stage pull so my very happy with that. Now I just need some range time to see how she shoots!
For the classic AK pistol grip, the Magpul subgun magazine pull tabs also work well. Plus it's rubber, so you won't get the grip all sticky like with tape.
Nice video, reminds me I need to get some optics and a rail for my ZPAP. Fired it for the first time a few days ago, didn't have much ammo for it then (only 60 rounds Winchester; indoor range doesn't allow bimetal) but I can definitely see a pretty good case for optics on it. Keep up the good work, sir! Your videos are always interesting.
Rob I’ve been watching your videos for a solid like 6 years now and your work never gets old, as of now I only have 3 ak’s and I’m trying to really figure all of it out, the one thing I really want to know and get to the bottom of the barrel is basic suppression, I’ve seen that you’ve made videos regarding some of the things to look out for like the bolt carrier being too rough on the rear trunion etc, but would it be worth getting a KNS piston for a non dedicated suppressed rifle? And if that’s the case, should I invest more in subsonic? Or just stick with FMJ?
Great info as always! I'd love to hear some more of your thoughts on high speed AK setups and different rails people are using. I was looking at the SAG mk3, looks pretty sweet and gives you a solid option for a flashlight, IR laser, and optic
One thing I see is the muzzle break. I found that style to be much more accurate. On one of your other recent posts, I commented how to scope a under folder. Mine works unbelievable, especially setting the rail up to mimic the combat setting.
PSA came out with the Soviet arms rail. It's kind of a Zenit clone. I was able to snag one (the sa30-sa31) before they went out of stock. I'm hoping they are making a b33 soon. There's not much info on them yet. I think I'm going to do a video on it when I get it to see how it does probably do some drops in dirt to make sure it holds zero.
More good info. And you're definitely correct about the camo pattern for shtf scenario. Too many people will run multicam. I am in an urban environment so I'd stick with either black. Black multicam or ranger green . Wooded areas depending on the area, atacs fg. Or dyed acu's I could see Rhody as well
Best camo for an urban environment is civilian clothing. Black is horrible camo, at day or night. Even at night you look like a dark human silhouette. If you're in the woods, the best camo for the night is the best camo for the day.
Black is not a camouflage, because black basically doesn't exist in nature. Even in a purely urban setting, black is not a good choice because it stands out very noticably in both daylight and at night. At night, pure black appears as an unaturally dark void compared to the surroundings. This likewise applies to Multicam Black and grey. Your best options are either Multicam or Ranger Green.
Black is perfectly fine if you're trying to stay out of sight. And in a shtf situation staying un noticed is key Sure day time grey man. But shtf multicam etc you'll stick out like a sore thumb even more so
Like always your videos are the best in the AK no bullshit world. I would like to see a video where you show us what are the best shooting drills you recommend to practice and get professional with the AK handling. Some old soviet training tricks :). Thank you
there are not any tricks, hold your AK at the level and aim your rear sight at the shoulders on the head and shoulders target you should hit the center of the target from 100m comrade E Z
Great video. I have a 1970 Romanian WASR MD-65 and a cobbled together Khyber AK-74 side folder, nothing new I buy comes close to how much I enjoy the experience of target shooting with those two very unique rifles. I do have a side mount on my AK-74 and am looking for the best optic option. I like the simple red dot on the "speed rifle."
Hey Rob I really appreciate you and your videos have pointed me in the right direction. I have a BTF47 iv watched almost all your videos keep up the good work.
For grip I like to use camo colored baseball bat grip tape. IMI [Israeli Military Industries] makes a great AR type collapsible stock. Of course PA 6x scope rules! I am still going to get one of those great suppressors soon. Thanks for the guidance, AK Guru! Oh yes and don't forget the recoil buffer!
I think the most important accessory is .1 sling .2 bandolier .3 ammo & mags plenty . I like the chicom for every rifle u own cuz most ppl don’t have that sort of thing. Most ppl I know have a couple mags and they stick em in their pocket even if they have a tacticool set up
there are ways to mount at least white lights to AKs without removing the wood, barrel clamp light mounts are pretty good options, won't hold zero for laser but good enough for white light, those white light can also use an IR cap on it for IR illumination, it's not a laser but it'll do fine, that's how I set up my "classic" AK's light.
@@AkOperatorsUnion How are the CDM Gear BC47 flashlight mounts? These mount to the barrel as well and have the mount for the flashlight built in and half the price of the BM-1. Whereas the BM-1 is just a picatinny rail that attaches to the barrel and you still need to buy a flashlight mount to attach to it.
@@blagdaross5953 I picked one of those up from Khyber Customs for like $40 ... threw a surefire G2X on it and your ready to rock for about $120 all in. I don't think you can beat that with the RS regulate.
Got back from a hunting trip. AK performed great in a rainstorm, trekking through dense brush, and getting mud splashed all over it. The AK is a great hog rifle, even my hunting partner switched his AR to 7.62x39 for the cost of ammo.
@@bluesavage2293 Primary Arms 1-6x. Same one that was on the rifle when Nutnfancy reviewed it. The gun changed a lot since then, but the optic setup is the same.
I added the same stock pad, and I run a 1-6 lpvo. I love my lpvos, especially with my astigmatism. Red dots are no longer an option for me. I also added the 74 muzzle brake and it completely reduces the recoil
Get four as soon as you can: An AK or AR, a full size pistol, a 12g tactical shotgun and a 10/22. Before you can't. Unless you live in a communist state or country. If you do, that really sucks. Get some air guns and slingshots.
You can still add a light and keep the classic furniture. Just put a utg shotgun pic rail on the gas tube, it's cheap and sturdy as well as working well and lining up the light to your thumb.
Except UTG is generally considered crap by most people. If you want to keep the "classic look" then the RS Regulate BM-1 is the way. Though, if you're building a functional fighting rifle ... which you are because otherwise why are you putting a light on it? ... then you'd replace the front end with a rail system from Midwest Industries, Ultimak, Zenitco, etc.
@@mhicaoidh1 if you loctite it then it works fine and stays put. Also you're literally just bolting on a flashlight so a full length rail is pointless. You could use a hose clamp as well if you're extra retro. Unless you need to zero a laser then buying a rail is largely unnecessary and in cold weather is not comfortable to use. A rail will get you updoots on r*ddit though
My vepr47 has a red dot and the SLR extended handguard (stops right behind the muzzle)+ railed gas block. A light and sling are the other things on it. I'm using a MI T1 mount for the red dot. Probably not the best, as I should have gone with RS mount, but it works.
I remeber before America made grips for aks,or had zeneco parts i had buddies who were taller big hands rhere twl finfers would dangle lol, what they did,was buy the thick rubber bands and maticulously added one band two bnd three until rhe enfire frip was covered, then they would double or 3x layer it made it beefier, better grip, smoother recoil on the hand, ans man did it feel good Were talkin pre amazon,or before skateboard tape was sold in stores that werent slecifically board stores
Hello Rob, thank You for the video. I have one question. In one video You was talking about infrared lights in the woods as an unmasking factor. In this regard can you please share your opinion on the NVG/ IR laser set up in the modern days. Is it still relevant in the world where other guy also has NVG? Or there are other solutions needed? Specifically what are Your thoughts on the NV Red dot+ NVG on the rifle? Thank You.
Using real world examples from the Ukraine war, in terms of rifle accessories, and why, is important information to convey. The ability to accurately discern three letter abbreviations on our enemy’s uniforms is paramount.
Yes, 9" LOP is great for most people (who don't have gorilla length arms). Once you start training with chest rigs, body armor, or colder weather gear ... you'll appreciate that your rifle is not hanging way out in front of you.
Great point on target identification. But this is not a new problem. During WWII, US Marines stopped wearing their camouflage uniforms in Europe as they looked much like the Nazi Camouflage. Also Snow camo looks almost the same wherever you are. Now Al Qaeda and ISIS are using US weapons, vehicles and camo. Thank you Brandon. In the USA black fatigues are very popular! I notice in Ukraine, they are wrapping arm and leg bands to identify their side! Thanks for another Great video!
Hey Rob, I suggest you doing a full episode on "canted sights" this issue needs to be studied in depth, sighting, line of fire, and fixing the canted sights too and how it could affect the impact, what to expect if you straghten them and so on. Thank you
Servus ! Im completely happy of your videos. Very interesting, but my neck and hand are the same manner. So stock is always too short. Best regards from Russia
Good stuff as always! You ask what we would like to know about. I would love to know what you consider to be the best short, medium, and long range AK shooting drills.
