It's a pity AKs are now priced ridiculously above and beyond the initial labor and material costs they were created with, and more domestic producers of the its-brother-from-another-mother-AR15 have rushed in to fill the sporting rifle gap. The reverse (low priced AK clones) used to be the rule by a wide margin.
The repair kit is a good idea. A lot of these issues other than breakages would be to not disassemble the bolt when cleaning unless it is causing malfunctions.
You need to disassemble the bolt to clean the firing pin to remove the carbon buildup, or you’ll end up having a hang fire, because the firing pin got stuck from the carbon buildup. I had this happen to me with my SVT-40. After a good cleaning, it runs like a Rolex. Routine maintenance is key. Even spraying a little silicone will help prevent condensation from getting inside the bolt and causing problems. Even applying silicone to the bolt guide rails will allow the bolt to run like a Rolex watch, and put more rounds down range.
Like many of you viewers, I’ve been enjoying the content from this channel for many years. The instruction, advice, and techniques have both entertained and taught me valuable lessons in the shooting sports in general and the AK platform in particular. To help repay this gift - after watching this video, I went to his on line store and bought the spares kit he reviewed, a couple of mags, and a sling patch/hk clip. Did I need any of these items currently? No. I don’t even know if the kit fits my Arsenal, Century, or Zastava rifles. I did it to support Rob and his family. It was only 80 bucks or so and took about 5 minutes. I encourage all of you to do the same. Don’t be weak…
If you get any trigger components (trigger, hammer, spring, etc), make sure they are made specifically for Yugos. AKM pattern triggers have a higher impact force than Yugos and will damage the firing pin over time
Also, it’s worth noting that you should replace the shepherds hook with a retainer plate. Had my entire trigger group come undone while at the range because the shepherds hook wiggles free under rapid fire.
The only malfunction I've ever had with my Zastava m70 underfolder has been the Commie Paperclip wearing out and coming loose (at about 3k rounds). My dad was shooting it when the trigger just "disappeared" on him and we couldn't even move the bolt back far enough to clear the gun. The trigger pin had walked out (and was never found) and the trigger spring pulled the trigger and hammer up into the gun, blocking the bolt. Doing a partial disassemply on a hot gun at the range was an uneasy experience. I then bought a 10-pack of retainer plates and put them in all my AKs. Worth every penny
Retain the pin! Such a simple but great idea. And your method of putting the spring back together, so good. I've wrestled with that thing much more than I needed to.
I recently got the PSA AK G5 Blem model (only Blem was they marked G3 on the bolt, just lásered on wrong) & a PSA AK G3 Blem (No Blems at all). I’m still a huge AR15 advocate, but purchased these for SHTF purposes. Your videos are helping out this old armorer a lot!! Between the accuracy & ammo prices I’d still stick with an AR, but have just enough AK knowledge to use these if we have to. I’ve seen your accuracy videos & I am shooting paper plate accuracy with stock irons, so I’m not that great, but appreciate your videos on this weapon system!! Thanks again!!
PS. Thanks Rob for showing us this little bit of maintenance. Head knowledge is good in a pinch. I've used videos to switch a mag release on a friend's Sig. What a pain and that plastic retainer pin on those is such cheap plastic crap.
ROB Excellent video! I,m way ahead of You Brother! The "beauty of the AK-47/AKM/ SKS is simplicity! For survival purposes these Weapons are very hard to beat!
I just keep a spare complete bolt in my 74 side folder rifle dynamics stock pouch for my 74. And for my 5.56/.223 AK I just keep spare extractor, extractor spring, firing, and retainer pins in a Ziploc bag in a small pouch on my rifle sling
@@TheOfficialCaseMade Those are a limited supply if they're real foreign import made AKM parts. It doesn't say who the manufacturers are on his website.
You really explain everything clearly and the video work shows the components... as an AK ENTHUSIAST NOT OWNER. I'm really enjoying the content on your channel Rob 👍 I do own a REPLICA AK47 and now I feel like I want spare parts kits 😂
For demonstration purposes, Rob ski is using a tiny workspace about 4" x 15" that is elevated about 4 feet off the ground AND he's outside in a field of fallen leaves and he lectures us about not losing AK parts!!! 😄Please, do not emulate him. Work inside but if you're outside, sit on the grass, throw down a tarp, a small tool roll, an unfolded bandanna or keffiyeh/shemagh (much larger than a bandanna) and go to work on it. Extra bonus points are awarded if the work surface cloth is a lighter color than the bolt parts. If you are about to launch a spring or tiny pin into low earth orbit, cup your hand over the exit hole to prevent that. Work carefully, don't lose your parts and remember: a fully battle ready Avtomat Kalashnikov is life! Just poking fun 🤡
FYI. Vepr AKs like my Molot Vepr AK47-21 side folder uses ak74 style bolts and bolt assembly pieces. So standard Romanian, German, Chinese, Hungarian AK47 spares kits and surplus parts won't work on the later Russian AK47 rifles. Earlier Russian AKM style rifles use AK47 bolt parts. But later Russian rifles switched to AK74 style bolts and components.
1st I would like to deeply thank you for highly recommending the Vepr AK-47 RPK style rifle. It seems that few can compare to it. I’m so happy that I purchased one when it was shy of 1K. It would be interesting to see which recently produced AK rifle can compare to it at less than 1K.
Awesome! I'm more of an AR guy but I do have a few AK's that rarely get shot except for my Russian AK-74 due to the once cheap 7N ammo. I never did any of this on my AK's. I learned something today witch is great.....some times learning things might not be so great...yesterday a learned what a BBL is...oh dear!
14:00 Bonus Points if you've taken apart multiple AK recoil spring assemblies without ever using Rob's T trick! You have to be superhuman to do this...🤯😃
