This burns me up so much I understand people have Bipolar but some people with Bipolar disorder really take advantage of their disorder and hide behind the diagnosis as a tool for manipulation, lies, and selfish attention seeking, antics. Some Bipolar people are so selfish and put zero effort into getting help.

My mom is Bipolar and my dad divorcing her was one of the best things that ever happened to my sister and I! My dad kept custody of us and he kept the house. My mom moved to Hawaii and she's fun to visit but there was so many horrible incidents when we lived with her. She tried to run my dad over with a mini van when I was 7. My husband was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in his 60's. We had been married 42 years (1968) before he was diagnosed in2010. Devastating to say the least. Thank God both our girls were married by then. It has been a very difficult time for us by I stood by him. We are now'in our 55th year together and he seems to have stabilized . He has suffered 2 heart attacks but so far is doing better than ever. I changed his diet too plant based and it seemed to have worked wonders. He takes his meds religiously which is a game changer. After 7 years the Dr's finally found the right combination that works for him.

My mother was bipolar she was diagnosed in 1974. I am now 51 so I saw the whole spectrum. From giving her benzo's to when lithium came out. Which she couldn't take because it made her sick. My mother died in 1995 the last 3 years of her life she had the a great combination of meds that made her life wonderful. Bipolar is still not completely understood a lot of mental disorders are not. They're still being worked on and being more understood everyday and better medications coming out everyday. Yes it was hard somtimes, yes it sucked sometimes, and yes sometimes it was horrible. I would not change a moment of my life for anything. Every single one of those incidents and everything I went through and saw her go through made me who I am and I like who I am. I'm very empathetic and Compassionate of other people for this reason. I'm also strong as hell. My mother and I had amazing relationship. People with bipolar are human beings as well, just as if they had cancer or any other disease. I was 9 and I stayed my sisters and brothers who are much older ran. and they regret it to this day. Vows means something they're not something to be thrown away. If you need to leave fine but you also might miss a lot of things that you also needed to learn. 1 and 4 people have a mental illness especially if they're genetically carried. My one sister missed this in her own daughter. Because she didn't listen to our mother about the symptoms so we could keep eye out to see if we might have it. In fact she totally denied that it even existed. The hell ride this cause her daughter she's never forgiven herself.

My loved one actually ended up in the hospital for a completely separate reason and while they were there I asked for the doctors to evaluate them. My loved one had absolutely no idea that they were not making sense. That’s what psychosis and nervous breakdowns will do. None of us could convince them that they were not the messiah and that the CIA was not following them. They need anti-psychotic medication to slowly get back to themselves. My loved one is a completely functional loving person. Had a full time job, was in graduate school. This is an illness and needs medical treatment. If your loved one is not cooperating with you, you could enlist the help of other family members. You could also cal 9-1-1 and have an ambulance take them to the ER. If your loved one has expressed hurting themselves or others, please do this. I’m so so sorry. My loved one would not cooperate with me either. @@ashleyhartadams3939 How did you eventually get them into a hospital setting? They have not threatened to harm themselves or others, but is not taking care of themselves, cancel doctor appointments relatives make for them, is angry and bitter, feels people owe them something, especially money, a free ride, a life of carefree ease. They were well educated, had a good job, friends and co workers who liked and admired them, got in a relationship with a smooth talking huckster type who took advantage of their naivete and money as well. This started 11 years ago, was hospitalized briefly, but checked themself out, never went to therapy, generally blamed others for the nervous breakdown. Parents never tried to help, thought a geographical change would bring them back to normal. NO...Stole money and parents prescription meds, instead of going to a Dr for pain they were in. Now both parents are deceased, is still bitter and suspicious, expects others to give them money and pay bills, which relatives have done, but money is used irresponsibly, and bills don't get paid. Siblings are in a limited capacity to help. Like I said, thinks nothing is wrong with them, won't go to a hospital or to a clinic for a regular general check up😢 What can be done???

My wife and I had a great marriage for 18 years (up until 2017) I had just bought and paid for a new house in 2016 and in the spring of 2017 she started having an affair with the guy we hired to do some roof work on our new home. I had suspicions from the start that she was seeing someone else but every time I asked her about it she would deny it. Fast forward to October 2019 and she came back from a cross country trip with one of her best friends to be with our daughter giving birth. After about 10 days of being back she comes up to my job and tells me we need to sit down and have a talk when I get home. Soon as I walk through the front door she drags me out the back door and tells me to sit down on the steps. She starts crying and says "I had an affair" I was in complete shock. Things only got worse from there. Over the next few months she went into a state of psychosis, back and forth to doctors, in and out of the mental hospital she was finally diagnosed with bi polar disorder and schizophrenia.. She got better and seemed like she was back to her normal self until 2 weeks ago when she had a heart attack and died at the age of 42. I feel like the last 6 years of our marriage was illusion, all fake like I didn't know her at all. Every time I look at a picture of her or a flower she planted in the yard or think of the good times we had between 2017-2019 all I can think of in the back of my mind is "She was having an affair when we did this together or when that picture was taken" If I ever decide to date again the first thing I'm gonna want to know is "Does mental illness run in your family?"

Wow, sounded so familiar, my wife manipulated the psychologist and psychiatrist and used post partum depression as an excuse and felt empowered when they concluded that there was nothing wrong with her. That very night instead of coming home she went to a hotel and was talking suicidal. When I called the counselor he said they couldn't intervene unless she called them. They wouldn't take my word, so I was never able to get her the help she needed. She called and had every kind of agency after me until i was left with no choice but to divorce her and fight for the custody of my two precious boys, which I won and gladly brought up by myself. Went through allot of guilt for the divorce being a minister. But there was danger for the boys and me, so I just had to conclude, it doesn't matter what people think of me as long as my conscience is clear. Loved my wife, but was in a no win situation. Boys are in their 30s today and I believe they are well adjusted.

Take it from someone who's Bipolar... You can go years with mild ups and downs then the massive "up" comes and it will most often end very traumatically followed by a very dark low. The higher you go the harder you fall, it's a stress management balancing act. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

NOTHING is as important as protecting those precious children. Nothing. Do not wait for the authorities to fix this. If she recovers, she will be grateful that you took great care of her children. If she doesn't, your adult children will thank you for not allowing their childhood to be one trauma after another. G-d doesn't want you or those children to suffer.

Dr D is right about them needing to find a good psychiatrist. But when you’re a regular person, trying to find a psychiatrist who doesnt condense their meeting into 30 minutes sessions every two weeks is impossible. When someone like me asks the doctor for extra attention or question whether we are getting the right help, they become defensive and treat you as if you’re an idiot. The ego attached to mainly medical professionals is their biggest flaw. When you’re someone with bipolar, or paranoia, it’s next to impossible to find a clinician with whom you feel connected. I’ve had psychiatrist not even look at me throughout the duration of a session. He literally just typed into his computer and then prescribed me more seroquil, which ended up doing harm in the long run. There are good psychiatrists, they are just very VERY hard to find, especially if you aren’t in a big city. Part of the struggle we face as manic depressives can be attributed to the negligence and carelessness of doctors. That’s why bipolar is so sadly over diagnosed and over medicated.

I think it depends on the severity of the mental health issue. Same as any other health issue. If you have high blood pressure you probably wouldn't think of telling a new SO but if you had epilepsy or a life threatening illness it would come up quickly. If you have anxiety issues you probably wouldn't feel the need to say much immediately but if you had schizophrenia it should come up sooner.

One time I got him alone and asked how he could be so open with it (I would be embarrassed) and he told me he would tell girls he was dating and within a week they'd break up with him so now he's open about it knowing it'll scare off the wrong girls from the get go.

In a case like this I think you have to consider Lyme disease. And even if someone does a basic Lyme test and it comes back negative, i wouldn't believe it that easily. Lyme can do things like this! Also someone needs to seriously analyze her nutrition. And if she's capable of staying awake for more than 24-36 hours, that's when things should happen. And why is she allowed to have alcohol at all?

Oh yeah, I recognize this with a family member. Also there is apparently a large difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II. I'm not a physician, but this psychotic behavior sounds like a manic episode of Bipolar I. I've known people with Bipolar II that always waver between "depression" and "normal", but they never have or had manic episodes. I've also read that Bipolar II can turn into Bipolar I if the person has a legitimate psychotic manic episode like described here.
