Living in a van has its challenges... and this day seemed to be a never ending tale of things that can go wrong when living in an RV. I want to keep it real with you guys by sharing both the good AND the bad, so enjoy this tale of my worst day of #vanlife (so far!)
I know things could be worse. And I am extremely lucky I made it out of all of these situations safe and sound. But let my experience be a lesson and reminder for ALL of us to plan ahead, stay aware, and trust your gut! Bad situations aren't always avoidable, but all we can do is try our best to steer clear of them when possible.
Speaking of which, if you have an RV navigation system you recommend, drop it in the comments below! I definitely should have been more aware of the signs on Merritt Parkway, though. That's what I call a "Sarah move..."
For my safety, not every single detail about this day was shared.
If this story didn't scare you and you are ready to make the plunge into van life, I'm happy to help. Email me at sarah@driftervans.com to set up a consultation. After living in my Drifter Van for 7+ months, I can attest that the quality cannot be beat. I love my little home on wheels!
Thank you all for being here! I'll see you next time. 🥰

As a fellow nurse and solo traveller who also fulltimed for 3 years and now is partiming, I can commiserate with your day. I completely agree about how parking in a hospital parking lot should be safe. Although, I n instances where I think I may get a knock on the door, I usually sleep in sweat pants and a t-shirt. That way at least I’m semi decent. As for your van height, what I have is a piece of paper I “laminated” with scotch tape and put on my visor. On it I have my truck height and trailer height in feet as well as metres, and the combined length of my truck and trailer for any ferry crossings. I also have my trailer licence plate number, so if I’m asked at the border I have it ready. I added my trailer’s width as well because of an instance where I couldn’t get into Zion if I was wider than a certain amount due to road erosion. I’m glad that you brought up the height of your van, as I have pretty much assumed it would fit under most, if not all, underpasses. Something to be aware of. All the best in the new year!

It 's hard when you are the only one doing all of the planning, driving and other logistics. I'm super organized and a huge planner but it's so clear to me how difficult it would be to maintain that 24/7. Everyone has a day or two or seven when they are tired, sick, overwhelmed and/or things just don't go as planned whether they are in a stick and bricks or a van--kudos for your perseverance and determination in seeing a really difficult series of situations through. Good for you! I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing holiday with your family. Best wishes for a fun and satisfying New Year! You go, girl!

Yep! I've been living the van life lifestyle for 3 years now - also in a professionally built Ford Transit. I consider myself quite experienced and skilled at it. Regardless, the midnight knocks, low bridges, and confrontation with knuckleheads are going to happen. This lifestyle gives you way more exposure to stuff so statistically you'll have way more opportunities for stuff to go wrong. What this lifestyle does offer is an amazing level of freedom. As well as confidence and character building.

I just watched a Today video on youtube about blinding headlights on the highways. It's the new led headlights vs old headlights and especially when they are out of alignment. According to this video the lights should face downward slightly and not outward. I'd have them checked out since it may be a simple fix.
@KnKs64
@KnKs64 6 месяцев назад
You should probably get your headlight alignment checked. Your van has a lot of weight added to it with the customizations that were added and is most likely sitting a bit lower in the rear which causes the lights to aim up upward a bit. If people are flashing their lights at you this is probably the cause. The Garmin RV GPS devices work very well and should not route you down roads with low overhead bridges. You enter the height, weight, and length of your vehicle and it takes those factors into account when routing you.

@HenryZwiefelhofer
@HenryZwiefelhofer 6 месяцев назад
Definitely check on getting your headlights aligned a bit lower. It’s usually as simple as turning a bolt on top of your headlight unit with an Allen wrench if you want to do it yourself.

@@NomadicSarah I've very possible that the extra weight in the back of the van from the build has kinda tilted the lights upward. Sorry you had to deal with the crazy person.

My wife and I moved to Vermont from Tennessee a couple years ago in a large Penske moving truck. We had never driven through the northeast, ever, and had no idea that almost every road was extremely restrictive to height of vehicles. We were trying to avoid the toll highways as they counted up your toll fee based on the number of axles on your vehicle and since we were pulling a trailer with our car on it (yes they counted the axles of the car that wasn’t even touching the road they were tolling), we had 6 axles total and were tolled $112 on the George Washington bridge on I95 in NYC. This scared the crap out of us because we had just driven through about 10 other tolls already that day that paid by plate so we wondered if that meant we had racked up hundreds and hundreds of dollars of toll fees without knowing. We knew more tolls were to come on I95 so we plugged in an alternate route and ended up getting lost/stranded in downtown NYC before a kind local saw us frustrated on the side of the road and gave us directions out that were safe for a truck. He said he personally sees people like us in this situation on a weekly basis, crazy. It’s worth noting that by time we hit that toll bridge, we had already been driving for 18 hours with at least 6 hours of driving to go and this excursion set us back 2 more hours. We had all of our belongings packed in this truck along with our cat crying in the cab of the truck with us and we really couldn’t afford $1000 of toll fines at the time. Probably the hardest day of my life, so I understand completely how frustrating it was for you!

I’m work at a hospital system in Colorado. The security guards are always on the look out for “homeless drug seekers” 🙄 Usually if you go in to the ED before dark and tell them you are visiting someone they’ll keep an eye out for you- but I wouldn’t recommend nomads stay at a hospital. It’s too bad bc it would seem safer than Walmart.

Oh Sarah! My blood pressure was up hearing your story! It brought me back to our travel day from hell, which inbolved hours long traffic hams, attempts at detours with google that tried to take us thru a field, then a wrong turn with a sign saying “road not suitable for rvs”. I was also crying by the time we arrived-in the dark, which we try never to do. We now use RV Life, both for trip planning and for GPS…it works without a signal. Many youtubers have discounts for it, so does Escapees/Xscapers. 🤗

So many crazy people out there! Seems they have been given permission to act out with violence in the last 8 years. Horrible. Glad you survived! Yes, you were stressed to the max. Wouldn’t give up on hospital parking lots..all kinds of people would be parked there due to having patients inside, so many vehicles would be legitimate. Happy Holidays. 🎊

That sounds like a nightmare trip. Glad you made it safely and was able to be with family afterwards. And, as you said learned some valuable lessons.Concerning the bright lights, we use to have people flashing their bright lights at us all the time when they were on low. My husband said the lights needed to be be repositioned, as in turned downward a bit but we had an older car. I’ve noticed the newer vehicles have such bright and distracting lights with various hues that can be distracting as well. 🫤

The feature of automatic turn-off headlights was added to vehicles so lights would not be left on, thus draining the battery. But they did not take into account that people would then be blinded in the face for short periods by headlights in parking lots. I would say that the human error of design is far worse than the human error of forgetting to turn off the lights. The best vehicles are ones where lights turn off when the key is shut off....take care.

Yeah I've often heard from different vanlifers hospitals were good places to park too. Granted right now my interest in the whole van life/living in your vehicle thing is as an outside viewer right now but I think it's strange you got a knock too, not in the least which because of the reasons you listed. Along the same lines, it could have even been someone staying in a patient's room overnight with the patient. Like I remember when I was 5 years old I had pneumonia and had to stay in the hospital. My parents stayed in the room too. People don't just teleport and materialize at the hospital. Maybe like you said someone just got weirdly suspicious or something. I remember in like 2016 being in Florida with my parents and sister, brother-in-law, and nieces. Some dude got irrationally possessive and angry over a newly opened parking spot (one of which we got to waiting for first), to the point, he punched the hood of my parents' car. It inspired me to buy my stun baton for self defense (which thankfully has never actually had to be used but it's nice to have all the same). Some people are just...yeah lol PS - I did see the video where you talked about where you were heading now. I wouldn't mind visiting there...but I'd have to get a lot better with my fear of flying first lol. Enjoy the area!

we all "run" into overhangs/bridges that we are not sure of. I am glad you could reason out what to do. The police would have also helped you out. Look up the non-emergency line and the dispatch will help you out if not send someone out. They would rather you do that then risk it. Two things to buy for the future.. A digital Laser Measure device $30 bucks that you can measure from the ground to the overhang/bridge etc and get an instant read on height. Probably not helpful on an active busy road, but the shoulder area could have been measured which may have given you the reassurance needed. And a tire deflator. I have Boulder Tools Tire Deflator. This can lower your van down to clear things that you are likely to hit. Set up the limits ahead of time and it will lower your tires to that set limit. With a tape measure, measure the height of your front and rear bumper before deflating the tires and remeasure (in the same place on the ground) after you deflate - you will know how many more inches you now have in clearance. You can go down to 15 psi or lower, but research your range. Make sure to have a strong air compressor to refill the tires after you clear the object. You are lifting a heavy van. The tire deflator will help you in other moments if you get stuck and need more traction. Especially if you drive on a beach-air down.

Sarah, we have 42 foot long 5th wheel that is 13.5 feet tall… I always plan my routes even though I have a garmin RV GPS. 1 trip I had planned our route, but as we got close, the GPS routed me a different way than I had planned myself. I figured I had done something wrong, so went the way the GPS wanted me to go. BIG, HUGE, MISTAKE, twisty narrow route and my way was better. So, my advice to you is even if you have a RV GPS listen to your gut and do your own planning RV GPS can be wrong

That no one in the parking lot or nearby could get out and lend you a hand against that self-absorbed egocentric dangerous individual is a glaring statement of what this so-called society here in USA has come to. That bright lights could cause such an outburst of hate and anger is frightening. I am glad you came away physically unscathed but emotionally is another matter. A few years back I had rented a car that apparently had these horrible either halogens or LED front lights and everyone was honking, giving me the finger and I had no idea why, until a car pulled alongside me and someone screamed turn off your brights. I did not have my brights on. But truthfully I detest those halogens or LED lights they are blinding.

You definitely need the RV GPS for the clearance issues. Although, you'll will need to play with the settings (parameters) that you set to avoid taking an overly long of a route. I have the same 159" high roof Promaster 2500, it is roughly 9' high at the top of my AirMax fan. You need to measure it, there is no way your van is 10'6" high, at least that is what I think you said.

I'm guessing we probably both pulled over at the same spot on the Parkway. There was an exit then the sign to say there was a low bridge. I was in a 31ft Class C with a car on the tow dolly behind it. The most you can back up with that configuration is about 3 ft before things go horribly awry. While I was pulled over trying to figure out an escape plan the roadside assistance truck pulled up. After he finished yelling at me he said he would hold back traffic so I could straddle the center line and get through that arched overpass. The motorhome needs about 12 ft of clearance and I made it through without any scraping sounds. Google Maps took me there and as soon as I got home I ordered a GPS unit that I was able to program in the vehicle size/clearance needs. Worth every penny although there have been times I still ended up in places where I shouldn't have been I never ended up somewhere with no alternate route. Hope that was truly the worst day you encounter and that they are all better than that going forward.

Oh man, I’m glad I’m not the only one! So sorry you went through that!! All we can do is learn from these crazy experiences, right?

@NomadicSarah yes, that was my first long distance trip with that rig and I definitely learned from it. Traveling is all learning and gaining experiences.

So, your van is brand new from Drifter Vans & the heater is already shot??? As someone considering using them for my van conversion, I’m a bit concerned now …

The guys that serviced my heater said everything was installed properly on Drifters end. They said the Espar heaters sometimes act up and replacing the fuel line with a smaller one normally does the trick, which it did! Drifter covered the entire cost of the service and after learning this info, they’re now going to replace the fuel line with a smaller one during all future Espar installations 😊👍
