An early game for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Mystic Defender was based on a Japanese anime, although its western release made no reference to it.
In this game, Zareth, henchman of the evil king Zao, has kidnapped Alexandra, the daughter of a supreme god, and intends to use her soul to resurrect Zao. You, in the role of Joe Yanato, must take on Zareth and his ungodly beings, rescue Alexandra, and bring peace to the world. Joe has the power of magic to allow him to defeat the various nasties that stand in his way. He begins the game with psycho magic, which is a rapid-fire weapon. He can later collect a flame weapon and a sonic ball weapon. All weapons can be charged up to unleash an almightily powerful blast of their powers. In fact, the flame magic only works when powered up, when it becomes a stream of fire that destroys anything in its path. The sonic ball bounces balls around the screen, attacking anything in their way. It's a bit hard to predict where it'll attack, but can be handy in some situations.
This is an old game, probably one that most people have never heard of, but it's a good one. It is quite simplistic, a bit samey, but it offers a good challenge, despite being a bit frustrating in parts.
