I've always done it with calor canisters. It will not implode as it's under pressure. I'm not denying the guy in video is right because he's but I'm not paying anything to connect my gas oven 🤣. People nowadays are stupid and only educated in areas where the system wants them to be educated. When it comes to changing your brake pads on your car or hanging a tv on the wall this is where it all reveals. If I get someone to do something major I always watch their work, they hate it but I don't care as it's my money and I want it to be spent well. It's mostly about easy gains nowadays. Charging a lot for simple tasks. DIY and educate yourselves people where you can.
Engineer???????? As someone else says below, gas "fitters" need to stop calling themselves engineers!! Engineers work for NASA, not with their heads stuck under someone's sink!! Engineering is the most difficult degree course available, taking 4 years of applied mathematics to then have a career in engineering. YOU are not an engineer.
My understanding is that the bayonet fitting “caps” itself .. once detached that is it, can be left as it is. If the customer has no intentions of installing a new gas cooker in the future I would then recommend cutting the pipe back and capping further back on the pipework but in most cases it’s gets left as it is, obviously TT afterwards to make sure it isn’t letting by.
I doubt you will see this because this video is old , but i wanted to ask a question. Would it be safe for me to disconnect my gas cooker from the mains and put it out for scrap metal , and then book a appointment with someone to cap the gas off (im going electric)
You think fairy liquid is dodgy. I rented an apartment in Romania, a hob had to be installed, the guys showed up with a bag of second hand iron tube and fittings, bad enough. When they opened the isolation valve after installation, they did the ultimate test, A CIGARETTE LIGHTER. I shut of the gas and called the company, they were very surprised that I was unhappy, in Romania a naked flame is considered a proper test Whaaaaat. I got the landlord to send a different company who tested to my requirement using proper equipment, but the overused old fittings remained, despite the landlord being charged for a new installation. Shocking difference in standards.
I qualified as a gas fitter back in the 1980's & we all used washing up liquid as a local test to see if pipework or fittings were sound along side using a gas manometer gauge .
I do remember my old man doing this. I even saw a gas engineer for a social housing company use a lighter on joints under a gas fire. How times have changed.
I had boiler fitted recently & they wanted to run 22mm pipe from the meter to the boiler instead of the existing 15mm , which would of meant a serious amount of work & upheaval & stupid cost all because of some daft legislation .. I fitted the boiler myself in the end & it works great @@boilerbreakdownexpert
Fair play and some vailid points, I'm no gas engineer and must say I hate touching gas. My range cooker has packed up so I'm sure there is a valve close by and should be safe to undo and remove my cooker or would u say call someone inn to disconnect my cooker? Cheers for any feedback or advice 👍
@@boilerbreakdownexpert ok. Many thanks for your reply. I shall sort something out 2day to see when a gas engineer can come out. Cheers for your advice 👍
I’m 65 no money but I’m getting a new gas cooker tomorrow fitting from Argos not included howcan I do it myself it doesn’t appear to be a bayonet fitting
Thanks for the info, just getting a new electric cooker and was going to get my son to disconnect the gas having watched another ytube video, will not be doing that now
@@malcookie Gas Engineers install, service, maintain and repair gas appliances. They could choose to specialise in installation or service, but whether it's a gas fire or cooker in a home, a heating system in a large office building or even the gas systems for an industrial estate, it all comes under the remit of a Gas Engineer.
@@boilerbreakdownexpert you miss understud,I phone gas Safe a couple of years ago regarding this and ,I was asked by a kitchen company I do work for,Gas Safe told me they could be left but it was good practice to remove it. Let's get the correct answer.
I appreciate the video but surely it's the engineers job responsibility to not do things out his remit. If they're willing to come out and do work they're not qualified to do, surely they're going to lie about it anyway?
the best thing to do if u no u can do the job do it but then phone up british gas u can tell them u think u can smell gas they will come out and check when they have dun the checks they will put a gas safe sticker on it and then u will b out but if u can a gas safe man out and the price he charges if not way over the top let him do it and pay him like u dont want to be paying 200 pounds just to fit a elbow on ur gas pipe thats way over the top
@@boilerbreakdownexpert thats why u call the british gas and tell them u can smell gas in your home they will come out and check and if every think is ok they will give u a report on it that way you covered
@@jameseley3098 they will most probably condemn your appliances if the slightest thing is wrong or out of place. British gas will still charge you a callout and they will be more then happy to issue warning notices, shut off or cap gas lines. Stop giving stupid advice. What's a few pounds in the in the thin of it. If you value yours and your families life call in a Gas Safe registered person. The reason why I take consider the title engineer is because I design and model heating systems. I don't just hang boilers or install appliances. COWBOYS AND GAS DON'T MIX. If someone dies because of you negligence. You'll have a trial on your hands and quite possibly jail time. If a Gas Safe registered person is doing their job correctly he/she will have to check safely devices, ventilation requirements, gas rates, working pressures, pipe sizing and a list of other things.
Nowhere in this video do you accurately explain why a 'soapy water test' doesn't work. For all I know you're right but you did a terrible job of explaining if what you're saying is true.
