Loki from Poly Effects gave us a look at their Euro-Rack module, Hector, a virtual modular environment with six ins and eight outs and over 100 different modules including all of Mutable Instruments' modules, effects and more. Hector features a Euclidean sequencer and a brand new chord strummer module that allows users to select chords and strum them.
We then saw Beebo, which is Hector in guitar pedal form with four ins and four outs and Josh Smith Flat V which is a gain pedal with 2 channels. Channel A is transistor based with selectable diodes. Channel B is amp style gain circuit with cascaded JFETs replacing valves while resonant filters shape the tone.
Hector Price: 599 USD
Beebo Price: 449 USD
Josh Smith Flat V Price: 399 USD

Now that I've owned a Hector for over a year, I have to say that the module is more potential than reality for day-to-day modular synthesis. The focus for Poly Effects is clearly guitar, and Hector doesn't get much development as it's own device. Hector owners basically just get what Beebo owners get, which leaves the potential largely untapped in my opinion. The counter argument seems to be that Hector has all the modules you could need to build complex systems. That's partly true, but with no ability to build and save sub-modules, you have to reconstruct everything in each patch, or create starter templates. This doesn't lend itself well to on-the-fly modular synthesis. It takes a lot of preplanning to use the Hector effectively in a eurorack system. I thought I would use mine a lot, but I've found that practically I'm only using it for a very small set of functions. For example, running the Mutable Instruments modules. Please, Poly Effects, start thinking about Hector as a different product from Beebo. Apparently I'm not alone in my criticism of the Hector. I've tried to sell mine, even at a steeply discounted price, and I can't find a buyer.

Mutable Instruments has to be the coolest company to ever exist in electronic music. Mutable algorithms are still the biggest selling feature for new state of the art products being released. Even after Mutable Instruments have stopped making new products.

Wish it had Intellijel Designs Rainmaker module in it, looks fantastic though.

I could've got two of these, vs the multi effect I am only okay with. Live and learn.

Also, i would like a true quad digital performance mixer based upon a big touchscreen. Each channel would be represented by a circle with the 4 outputs equidistant on the perimeter. The relative volumes would be set by the position of the dot within the circle. For example, dead center would be all 4 outputs the same volume. Separate channel volume strip next to the circle. Then animations could be made and saved as presets. Things like 4-corner ping-pong or some left-right stutter or just circling the room. Atmos is way too much for live performances with our volcas and harley-Benton guitars. 8 channels of this would make me the lord of the ambient and or acid-techno.

I have had a Poly Beebo for many-o-years and absolutely love it but hate how I have to power it and it's "always on." It's in my Eurorack effects chain but don't like the standalone. It's a sub-100 serial number and definitely want a hector so bad (will be selling my Beebo to get one).

When will someone build a pedal "stand ", for detailed tweaking by hand? How can the person do touchscreen or capacitive sense with their foot? Maybe their Aussie associates with the motorized synth controls can help develop motorized pedal pots so one can tweak by foot while playing. I would buy a "motorized" Helix or beebo type thing that can be run from foot-rocker switches for live performance

It has a midi in, so you can connect your favourite midi foot controller and drive with that?

What a shame that Loki doesn't add a couple of CV and Gate ins/out on the Beebo (like the Deluge has). It's sort of odd to have - as an example - the sequencers on both units, but only one can send out CV, what good is that? I understand one is eurorack and the other a sort of sound design stand alone (very useful). But if you have the same software, then they need to have some sort of crossover between the two units - if you understand what I mean 🤔. BTW, I'm hesitating over the Beebo and Hector, exactly for some of the reasons above. Do I use up space in my rack and use some of the other stuff in Hector, or have effects outside (and two channels - well 4 in stereo) to build some nice extra ambiances?

Not quit the same... but.. they make a standalone enclosure for hector that can make it "stand alone".

the absolute last thing i'd want to noodle with in my rack is a touch screen.

bad idea with nodes. what prevents you from making a matrix like ems synths?

Footswitches on a touchdisplay?? 😂😂😂 if i want to operate an effects pedal with bass or guitar, i certainly don't need an easily breakable touch display in between. I think the developers have no idea what it's like in a rehearsal room or on stage. It´s all about the money. No one needs this thing. I would turn on the brain first before I put money into the development of a device that is definitely pointless.

There's a few thousand of these on stages and touring around the world and over the last few years it's mostly knobs that break. Footswitches break a lot more than screens. The screen is pretty heavily protected.

LOL - it's clear that you haven't actually seen in person, no less used, a Beebo.
