This is a test of the NAP Thunderhead 125 gr fixed blade broadhead.
For resharpening Thunderheads, check out this Stay Sharp Guide sharpener for Thunderheads: • Thunderhead broadhead ...
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Thunderhead posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Thunderhead 125 gr Score: 78.95 = 7 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 15 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale).
2. Cut Size (20%, 13.53 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.78"/2.5" x 7 = 4.98 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.78"/2.5" x 7 = 4.98 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.19"= 3.57 pts)
3. Sharpness (20%, 17.98 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 225 grs=9.75/10=8.78 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +100 grs=8/10=7.2 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (10/10=2pts).
4. Penetration (20%, 15.84 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.25" = 6.25 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(59 layers=7.59 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 16.6 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (2/10 = .6 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
Bonus Points: 0
Price: $13.33/head
TOTAL SCORE: 78.95 = 7 Golden Arrows
Grading Scale:
90-100 10 Golden Arrows
85-90 9
80-85 8
70-80 7
60-70 6

Great old head. I remember when they came out, and we all dropped our Bear Razorheads and Satellite Titans for them. I shot the 100 grain for years then the 85 grain (1 1/8") on pultruded carbons (Easton PC, AFC , original Beman Flash and Hunters). No failures, always tuned up great, sharp blades, killed plenty of game. Not much more you can ask for.

Thunderheads are a standard by which all heads are judged. Well those and the original Muzzys. I agree that modern heads are by and large way better but these older heads have sure taken a lot of game over the years. Thanks again for another great test.

I started out over 40 years ago and have used Thunderheads since they first came out. I used to love the 150 Grain 2 blades but they stopped making them. I have been shooting the 125 Grain 3 blades ever since and the deer I shot last year was taken at 25 yards and I watched him tip over about 70 yards away. Love these heads. Don't ever recall losing a deer with these. Great video! Keep them coming. One of my favorite hunting channels.

Regardless of what today's market standards might be, I have absolutely slayed an 18-wheeler full of whitetails thanks to this Broadhead. The only time I never got a complete pass through was when I spine shot a deer. In my opinion these broadheads belong at the archery Hall of Fame.

Great comment. Thanks for sharing your experience. Just cause things have improved, doesn't mean older models like these don't get the job done. Same with bows, right? The old bows my dad shot and killed a begillion animals with sure worked well...but I'd rather benefit from the improvements since that time.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures I see what you're saying, and I certainly hope you enjoy every moment you spend in the field, however I just don't know of a deer that I have ever shot with a Thunderhead or saw shot with a Thunderhead that a friend was using that could have benefited from more killing had they or myself used another Broadhead. By the way, maybe one day I'll make a trip down from the Twin Cities to pick up some Krispy Kreme donuts and we could share one of these Heavenly Delights and a cup of coffee.

Great video. I still use my old 100 gr Thunderheads when I take my 'old PSE Edge' out into the field and they are as deadly now and they were decades ago. I agree there are better heads, and I use them with my newer bows, but you got to love those old Thunderheads. Note: Based on your videos, I did buy a Stay Sharp guide, in part to sharpen my old Thunderhead blades. The guide worked great, they are sharper now then when I first bought them - and they were scary sharp then. Great Channel, great videos - looking forward to more.

Thunderhead with the diamized blades were the only head I never had to sharpen out of the package. They were hair popping sharp, flew great, penetrated great, and left huge holes and massive blood trails. I never bent or broke a ferrule, and their blade angle of attack was really great for maximum penetration. I never lost a blade on an animal, but I did on my practice head after repeated shots into targets which is why I ultimately quit using them. I blew through my first bull elk at 40 yards like he was a sheet of paper. He never even knew he was hit. Hall of Fame head right there. They should release it with thicker blades, titanium ferrule, and better blade retention system.

I remember when in the 2000's the MX--2 came out and the old MX or MX--1 became one of the Standard 3 blade models. I am using a Chinese knockoff of the MX--2 model (EQI with 12 broadheads) in black that is like a Muzzy 100 grain or actually closer to Wasp Bullet 100 grain model for my big game head, the Chinese version I have is the type with the crosshatching on the screw part that holds the blades in, I got some ugly green color 12 of them for less price then the original set off E--bay from a USA seller to use the blades from them as I lost a blade unscrewing one of the black color broadheads the second time I did this trying to better line up the blades in the broadheads. Odd thing is there is nobody who sells blades for these heads despite this Chinese knockoff being the same OEM design for all with the Crosshatching blade holder, there is a second style that is closer to a Wasp Drone 100 grain head with the part that holds the blades that might use a different style of blade.

Gotta admit, this head took a big beating and really survived. I'd conclude it would be a very good head to use on any animal. I was particularly impressed with the steel penetration. That is enough to put your fear away on animal penetration IMHO. for as much as I can remember, you can buy a 1/2 dozen on these heads for about $40 ? Thats excellent performance for that kinda money. I'm not a broadhead fan these days so much as I am a COC because of the amount of pigs I hunt. But impressive from an oldie but goodies. These NAP Thunderhead can still be bought new, off Amazon too even, and are about as close as one will get to the old Game Tracker Terminator 125 gram models unless buying old unused new in box Terminator 125 grain heads from E-Bay. The Thunderhead can even be compared to the 125 gram version of the Lighting Terminator model that had a sharper angle edge to the blade initially for a sharper blade supposedly. The NAP Thunderhead is still very similar to almost all 125 gram Terminators, except the more jagged Double Cut 125 gram/Double Cut Thunderhead 125 gram as that is a different Steak Knife like bevel to the head the way some of the 2 blade models are made now.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yep the Game Tracker Terminator 125 and later 125 with weight aka the Lighting Terminator model are nearly identical with the ferule part having the line groves in them. The 110 being the 125 Lighting Terminator without weight is similar in design to this head just lighter weight due to missing that 15 grain weight to make it 125 grains. The only ones that are not the same is the old 100 grain Game Tracker Lighting model as that is considered different model made up into the era of the 125 with weight and same with the 125 Double Cut as the blades are longer then a standard 125 Terminator or even the more modern 110/125 Terminator Lighting. Only other head similar to the Nap being made right now is an Allen 125 and 110 or 100 grain broadhead that the 125 grain version is being copied to nearly a T by Chinese knock off companies same with the 3 blade Allen has in a Muzzy MX--3/MX--4 design has been copied to a T by Chinese companies, I have the knockoff of the Allen that copied the Muzzy MX--3/MX--4 design. The modern Allen in the Terminator 125 design is based off an old 1970's Allen model that is no longer made and often sold way higher in price on E-bay then any of the Terminator models for some reason to the point the modern variation is cheaper when often that is not the case considering the price of modern heads, even the cheaper models, that are not Chinese knock offs.

Not my first choice but if I had to use them on a deer hunt I wouldn't be crying. For me still a better choice then most mechanical heads (with exception of maybe the Sevr & Meathead) cool, old-school, get the job done head 👍

Thunderheads are tried and true. For sone reason I couldn’t get em to fly in my current rig like my field points and switched to the NAP Hellrazor.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures Год назад
Yep. They do have quite a bit of surface area with that long design...that hinders flight forgiveness.

Nice. They can get the job done for sure. There are better options...heads that score in the high 80s and 90s...but that doesn't mean Thunderheads aren't great heads.

Ive used the Sevrs 2.1 and 2.0 (even before your positive tests) and I am not switching to anything else for a variety of reasons. The first reason is identical flight to a field tip which Ive tested. The 2nd is no failure for blades to open after killing 6 deer with it. Third reason is ease of use and durability.
