@JAC 08 The Platinum in this video has a Nominal micron rating of 15 and I believe the silver has a nominal rating of 21. The Platinums are on sale this month at Napa, and I think are a great buy. Here's an article that can probably explain micron ratings better than me.www.lenntech.com/library/fine/absolute/absolute-nominal-filters.htm
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 3 года назад
@JAC 08 You know the micron ratings are very confusing and I take all of them with a grain of salt. One site will say one thing, another says something else and a 3rd also comes up with a different number. This oil filter may not filtrate as well as say a Fram Ultra, (99% at 20 microns), I don't know for sure but it's a good oil filter.

I made this comment on another of your videos but my local NAPA store manager said they are discontinuing the Platinum filter. I bought one recently for my 2011 RAM 5.7 L Hemi, and I like them a lot. The Gold level filters will be their top shelf filter, and they are manufactured overseas. I guess NAPA wasn’t selling enough Platinum filters, made in the USA. Sad.

Even though the Platinum filter media is shorter, it filters deeper into the surface, so it can collect more grime. The Gold filters more on it's surface.

I think twice a year Napa runs their 50% off sale on filters, spring/fall. I stock up on everything...for jeeps.. tractor, air and oil and fuel filters. Always use Gold no complaints. Recent problem I had was finding an oil filter for Chevy 2.7 turbo 2021 Silverado. Used a WIX because couldn't get a Gold (I know same thing). Just ordered 3 Golds from store.. online they were unavailable. Great video, thanks.

I just picked up a Napa Platinum # 47356 for my Honda Civic and these oil filters are up to $14.79 plus tax, now. Still made in the USA and I checked to make sure it had a silicone ADV. Metal core now has louvers, instead of the holes, on this filter anyways. I like to use the Purolator Boss, as well, but they're not cheap, either. I'm gonna have to start watching out for the sales I guess. Thanks again for the videos. This was a good one and a very good comparison of two really good filters.

Regardless of brand, ALWAYS look in the filter before installation. You would be surprised how many new filters have visible surface rust in them. Fram is probably the worst in that regard. The last time I bought a Wix filter it had a long curly metal shaving in it! Tapping the baseplate after assembly seems kinda dumb to me.

The plat is tailor made more towards marine applications as they are working at higher RPM's than most cars/trucks. I cannot remember exactly what it was my sales rep at NAPA told me but it had something to do with that as well as the seal on the filter.

A shocker to me. I've never seen an XP/Platinum with Wix thread end bypass before. The vast majority of XP/Platinum have always been dome bypass. I believe you found an outlier with this application. I think I may have an answer why though. Using Wix look up, the 7055 is only for Subaru with the high 27psi bypass. My guess is Wix only wanted to make one bypass type across all the 7055 filters so they picked thread end for all. Cool find. Thanks for the video.

My 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5.2 V8 is still going strong for 28 years without engine or transmission overhaul. Right now it is over 423,000 miles. Several years ago, I've used conventional oil then blue smoke came out from tail pipe as I didn't like so, I switched 5W-30 Mobil One Synthetic oil (no high mileage or no extended). I changing oil every 6 months Spring and Fall since retired is fewer driving or change at 5,000 miles but not beyond 7,000 or 8,000 miles plus, added engine restoration solution with Royal Purple oil filter for years (changing max 10,000 miles). Additional, I've reduced engine thermostat to 15 degrees (180 instead of 195 degrees) to prolong engine life without any problem or always passed smog check. Also, I've used mostly Chevron 87 octane gas of trying not get a cheap gas brand too.
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 3 года назад
Wow sounds like you take care of your Jeep.👍 Yes, top-tier gasoline is good. I too went to a 180 thermostat, because 180 usually means around185 and 195 usually means 200+ Keep up the good work.👍😊
@SlikLizrd
@SlikLizrd Год назад
It sounds like you really care about your rig, and that you want what's best for a long, trouble-free engine life. Me, too !! 😁 Chevron 87 Octane is a wise choice -- consistant quality and performance. Mobil 1 is a POPULAR oil, but it tests poorly -- Pennzoil Ultra Platinum tests MUCH better, and costs about the same. You'll find that the Bosch Premium oil filter tests better than the Royal Purple oil filter, and for LESS money. And then, there is the subject of ENGINE TEMPERATURE -- VERY important, but so often misunderstood. You say you dropped your Thermostat Temp by 15 degrees "to prolong engine life" -- BUT -- that 15-degree temp drop actually SHORTENS your engine's life ! Years ago, we ran our engines at 180 degrees -- no problems. When they started getting serious about emissions, it was discovered (and proved) that engines performed better and lasted longer when operated at higher temperatures -- closer to 200 degrees F. By the early '90s, commmon thermostat temps were 195 F, with some GM cars at 205 F. Old-school guys like me and you kinda flipped out, 'cause we thought that "cooler is better" -- but we were un-informed. Now, we have decades of research that shows that our engines run better, longer, and with much less air pollution than in those early days. I've found the MOTORAD 195-Degree thermostat to be the top-performer over a variety of temperatures and climates.

You should do a short video just on bypass relief. There are so many videos out there where people say the bypass relief is the big coil spring. To my knowledge, that is false. The coil spring provides tension only. Bypass relief is either the upper style you show in this video, or a leaf for tension instead of a coil and that leaf will have a small bypass spring and valve built into it, or the filter canister has bypass built into the canister. Or in the case of some hydraulic filters I've seen, there is no bypass which is confirmed on the Wix website under that spec category which says "none." Example Wix WL10079

What many videos do not show is how Motorcraft Filters are one of only few companies using a thread end bypass, Wix, Napa, and Royal Purple all had outstanding design and when they got bought out, the designs changed and in my opinion they are a cheap design. No longer made with highest quality. Royal Purple Filters, Napa Gold and Wix have all changed from a nice steel base plate with thread end bypass, Silicone ADBV, evenly spaced holes and steel coil spring, solid canister casing. It would be interesting comparison how they have changed. Now Purolator is better than those. I currently use Motorcraft although I know they use a leaf spring and the Purolator is a decent design, the Boss is nice and it shows filter media is better than Motorcraft. Not a fan of dome end bypass. Many new oil filters displayed in videos don't even come close to what RP and Napa Wix used to be years ago. The new ACDelco E core is an embarrassment. Why do these companies think they can change a proven design and still have a loyal following for a cheaper product. They must think customers don't notice. I expected K and N to be higher quality, the dome end bypass design is cheap and does not look built with durability.
@AUXdrone
@AUXdrone Год назад
Let’s be honest about this though, relatively few people give much thought about the choices they have regarding basic vehicle maintenance. The majority of people are going to go with what grandad used (and give no further thought), what is cheap, what their oil change station uses, what’s on sale, etc. Very few of us really consider micron efficiency, gasket material, flow rate, additive packages, and so forth. And to add to the honesty if the majority of people stuck to 50% manufacturer recommended oci’s, stuff like micron ratings wouldn’t have much of an effect on the health of the engines. I.E. at least the lubrication side of modern engines would be in better general shape (other than atrocious engine design not withstanding). Point is, we are the vast minority that find entertainment and enrichment in making informed decisions about our vehicle investments. What prompted my reply is your, “they must think customers don’t notice…” My reply is yes, in fact most customers don’t notice. Because most people don’t even consider doing the research. Most people will just go with the cheapest, or most convenient, or easiest choice…or would even know that there are entire communities that geek out on just motor oil related discussions. BITOG being a prime example.

so I just bought a couple different model numbers of this filter for family members since the sale is so good this month(april 2021). The one for the 2021 Kia Soul has what appears to be the nitrile rubber base ring or whatever it's called, but the anti-drainback valve is silicon. HOWEVER, on the filter for the 2013 Nissan Quest they're BOTH black, indicating to me they're both nitrile rubber. I would have wanted the quest's filter to have silicon because for the vehicle it's supposed to ride out a 7,500 mile oil change interval and the filter is soooo small! I don't get it. Maybe for the sale they're going cheap, but honestly, I did not have a great experience at Napa this time. I purchased a total of 4 filters, paid all up front, they had ONE when I paid and then I had to go back 2 more times. NOT convenient.

I'm pretty sure the Platinum filters have silicone anti-drain back valves, sometimes they can be black in color. What is the filter number? I'll pick one up and opened her up and see, would make for a good video if it's nitrile rubber.

@@WhipCityWrencher so the little one for the Quest which appears to have the nitrile antidrainback valve and o-ring is model 41358 and the other for the 2021 Soul with just the black O-ring but silicon aintidrainback valve is 41334. Thanks

I'm no Expert, this is only my opinion, me personally, I do short OCI's. I wouldn't use any oil filter for more than 10k miles or one year, and in that time frame you could change your oil as much as you want plus I like to use a good synthetic oil. I don’t think you should have to rely on the oil filter bypass valve ,that means you’ve let the oil go to long and it should’ve been changed much sooner, what do you think?
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 2 года назад
I agree, if you do regular oil changes you shouldn't have any problems. About the only time, the bypass valve may open is in the winter when the temps get cold the oil may thicken.

@billyjack8119 2 года назад
So if most all filters you buy have a bypass valve in them that is set up for 12 - 15 psi and your engine runs down the road at 30 psi what percentage of oil gets filtered anyway? When it starts up for a few seconds before the pressure comes up? Most car engines make more than 15 psi even at idle. You can find a TG3682 at walmart once in a while that does not have a bypass in it so wouldnt that be better. It fits 3/4 x 16 threads which covers filters like tg3600 and m1-209, fl400 and gobbs of common car filters so wouldnt that be best to filter 100% of your oil rather then ?
@WhipCityWrencher
@WhipCityWrencher 2 года назад
Once your engine is warmed up and you are using the correct viscosity oil for your engine and the oil filters is not clogged. Then the answer to your 1st question is it should be filtering 100%. You need the bypass valve in case your filter gets clogged or the oil is too thick especially when cold, without the bypass valve parts in your engine could starve for much-needed oil. The bypass valve will not open until the pressure going through the filter media is more pressure than it takes to open the bypass valve. Typically in a warm engine even if your oil pressure is above the bypass valve setting, the oil will flow through the filter media easily and the bypass valve will not open. I hope this helps.

@@WhipCityWrencher oh really i have that filter on my diesel tractor that was made in 1980 and its not a problem. What are you going to bypass in a gas engine that runs on a clean highway. Sludge? Metal shavings? It doesnt need the bypass and no you dont get %100 filtration. Look up any filter and they are made to bypass at 12 psi. You could change oil and never put a filter on and never know the difference. We plug chevy V8s and run a non bypass filter and never have a problem. Sometimes 100 psi cold happens and the filter never bursts or comes off.

Your oil pressure gauge is measuring oil pressure relative to atmospheric pressure, where as the bypass valve only sees the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the filter itself. In other words, you might have 60 PSI engine oil pressure, but only a few psi drop through clean filter media with warm oil.

The Coil Spring is held in place by the Coil Spring. It is NOT attached to any part of the oil filter, and is "held in place" by the pressure it applies between the cannister and the filter element. The Coil Spring was found to have DAMAGED the CANNISTERS, and was replaced in later models by the Stamped Steel Retainer. Another reason for dumping the Coil Spring was the environmental concerns -- the Coil Spring takes much more energy to produce.
