Another excellent talk!! Speaking of the infantilism of our world, it sort of speaks to how regressive the trans movement is. It's back to playing dress up magic shows. We are beyond redemption if we can't see the devil in the details of what's going on there, the severity and scope and depravity. I'm speaking about children. The ideas they are having forced upon them systematically.

Dr. Taylor & Richard, thank you for this superb interview. I've read all these books over the years & have had no one with whom to discuss these issues. Appreciate you both for bringing these brilliant sources & thoughts into the public discourse.

This conversation certainly made people in chat discuss what kind of tea they drink. I love art. Las Meninas is one of the greatest paintings of all time. Worth examining. The majority agrees there is a mirror on the wall. All in favour come in two groups. One believes the reflection is of the queen and king's portrait, and another suggests the couple was there (either just standing or being portrayed). So, unless we ran into Velasquez, we would never know. But surely we can guess and talk forever. However, it is clearly documented who are the people on it. However, talking about social media, there could be a link to that painting. People today get sucked into the social media world, where they either create an illusion of another life or follow someone else's thinking they are part of that person's world. And that somehow gives them more credibility. Why did Velasquez make himself part of the painting? There are members of the court. The queen and king are there (whether they are or not, he cleverly made them present). And then, as part of that group, there is a painter himself. Artists of that time were not famous. Nor important. They would not get a selfie with royalties at that time. They were merely employees if they were lucky enough to get paid positions. But he made himself part of that life. Could that be linked to the present, where people entering social media think they are part of a different life? Or they merely want to be. They usually make "Oh, yes, I follow him/her" sound like they are best friends or family members with that person even though the person followed doesn't even know they exist. Narcissus adored his reflection in the water but didn't know it was him. We look at ours behind the screens, but we believe it is us on the other side. What is the same? As with Narcissus, we can not take our eyes away. Secondly, the reflection is not a real one. In both cases, it is a delusion. And if that image gets disturbed, hell can open. There is separation from reality in both cases. Are we more significant if we are 'out there'? Not to mention all the tools we now have to make us look more beautiful. The more we are there we are separated from here. So the question is this - even if, in our case, actual death does not occur, are we still 'dead' just by not living our real life? Not living equals death. Now, as all of this is only about us (I, me, and myself), we get to narcissistic social disorder and many more raised questions. Is this world of social media smartly exploiting us by addressing the narcissistic part we all have? We don't have to have a narcissistic mental disorder to act this way. However, could we develop it? Collectively, only more separated from each other than ever?

My theory is that Velasquez was painting the five year old Infanta and the king and queen - her parents - had interrupted a refreshment break because it is a bit much to expect a five year old to stand perfectly still for any length of time and her mum and dad were popping by to see how the portrait was progressing. The nun and priest in the background are the Infanta's spiritual teachers so it is natural for them to be there. The Meninas are her ladies in waiting curtseying to her. The dwarf and the little boy are her playmates and the dog is her pet and looking suitably bored and would probably be much happier running around in the sunshine and fresh air. No idea who the man on the stairs is or if he is just leaving or just arriving. But I expect everyone in the painting knew each other.

Thank you so much Richard and Dr. Taylor for this series and the SEEMINGLY tangential nature of the discussion; so many far-flung concepts so neatly sewn up into a very rational bundle. Indeed , what is unseen is of immense importance. Can someone please figure out a way to splice this level of reasoning with influenza so it becomes airborne? Excellent use of a questionable media for better purpose, and a very worthwhile investment of my time and attention. Looking forward to the next installment.

"Celebrities are tautologies in human form" - Dr. Taylor. Celebrities and Sports Legends as glorified and living symbols of fantasy, dream, ego-fulfillment, sacrifice, and by virtue of themselves as commodities, soothing and enraging the masses - or, maybe something like that. Pure brilliance you both, and such simple linguistic, grace in that 1 statement, Dr. Taylor. Thank you Richard for bringing philosophy back to modernity over the years, and harvesting for us, deliciously, the bitter medicine it is, to help cure our poisoned thinking by all whom influence our disempowerment from fertile and rational thought capable of changing times. Thank you so much good gentlemen :)

Dr Paul Taylor is right, and after I started drinking light roasted artisan coffee, I can never go back to Starbucks or Costa ever again. The difference in quality between the artisanal coffee and the chains is huge. Yet people choose the chains simply as a result of the branding!
@don-eb3fj
@don-eb3fj Год назад
A lot to make of your choice of words there- "chains" and "branding", as in the concept of living in a world where literally EVERYTHING is seen as a copyrighted corporatized commodity, and increasingly preferred to the "artisinal" experience of life as we are driven onward to an unquestioned destination by mass media marketing , drowning in our own reflections in our little black mirrors.

The reflection of the painting in the back looks incomplete, which is what makes me think the 'window' in the back is, in fact, a mirror that is reflecting the painting.

Epistemology - I have a hope that at some point in my life (soon) that I might experiment with trying to provide myself with nothing more than the sun & stars in order to navigate a destination (which I kind of do already) … then learn the progression of ancient nautical tools; each as they had come to be invented … in order to get a sense of what it must have been like to use what would be considered hi tech at the time … renaissance & enlightenment. Living in a different time … without the conveniences we take for granted today … I grew up having been around some without plumbing or electric in my lifetime. My grandparents would have lived when transitioning to electric lights … now we see them from space. Try wrapping your head around the way they use to think … lol ✨🌎🧑‍🚀 Without knowing it they were far less cautious … life was inherently far more dangerous … illnesses & fires, no fire departments or 911 organized or codes … or lights for surgeries or hospitals to perform them in. We should appreciate rather than become careless with the conveniences of hot running water even. That’s what goes through my mind when pondering before & afters … and to compare & contrast a period of time I’d struggle to understand. All day working in quarries, coal mines, and digging canals in order to go home to no running hot water or lights and walking or if lucky a horse to ride to home or a local casino … easy money for somebody. Desire is like food? Our existence will is always seek to be fed? To what purpose and meaning? What do we need vs what we desire? Transition from wood to canvas mid 16th century … were they initially or painted white? Love these Evals … ton of fun!

I have some questions and a thought - I'd like to get an opinion on if possible. Let me first say that I enjoyed listening to this. It's so nice to listen to something that stimulates the mind. Forgive me for my lack of savvy, I couldn't figure out how to time stamp, I hope that does not pose a problem, I will try to figure it out for future use. 1st question: Could the lack of family support and social literacy be the reason these small non dominant groups are gaining influence, justifying themselves, altering what used to be dominant morals and values? For example; gender dismorphia is seeping into the schools and children as young as 3; please explain this craziness. Question 2: There seems to be a gamut of distraction through politics, media,rights activism, technology, and AI. Do you believe that this is intentional so that agendas can be put into place without people's cognizance? Question 3: If capitalism stimulates our desire for predictability, doesn't marxism also create predictability? What is the difference? Does one manipulate us into believing we desire that, while the other demands it? Question 4: if the Greeks myths were their true beliefs at the time, and in our culture as we look at that past and are intriqued, stimulating the mind into understanding a deeper meaning, trying to grasp the mindset of the people of that time. And now technology is progressing so fast, so fast that it doesn't seem to last long enough for people to adapt. Not to mention the decay of our social norm. How do you think a future generation, looking back on our history, would they define us? What would philospers say? Question 5 : This is from the first lecture. It takes a bit of time to digest everything you guys talk about. I was curious about the comparison to the farm animal and the bull. If the farm animal is preordained, wouldn't the bull also? No matter the outcome, the bull is killed. If he valently wins by goring or killing the matador, he doesn't get to fight another day. Shouldn't he have a chance to win his freedom, as many gladiators did, who fought and survived? Now, here is a thought; I'd like to know if this could be a possible viewpoint that makes sense. In the painting by caravaggio, the false version of himself is the reflection, which is the flawed version of narcissis; (narcissism is defined today as not liking their true self, therefore living up to being a false created view of themselves). If we could anthropomorphisize the reflection, it could represent that version. The reflection yerns to be the version of the gazer, doing whatever is necessary to convince its authenticity. The 2 paintings are awesome, and I thought if put side by side, Waterhouse's painting could represent when he first discovers himself, never having the chance to break free from the curse Nemisis placed on him, so entranced with himself he is oblivious to all the beauty around him. Caravaggio's painting could represent his world within that curse, dark and murky. It could almost be an aftermath, in which, according to Greek myths, he is still staring at his reflection in the dark waters of the river Styx, probably unaware that his life is over. Although he was cruel to those around him, the curse seemed unfair. An external influence that created a split and magnified his vanity and self-love to the degree that he couldn't break free. When in normal circumstances, he would've continued living a vain, self-serving life. What is your thought on this take on the painting? I really loved listening to such a thought-provoking subject. Look forward to hearing more...thank you.

Interesting how a father could see his daughter as an object to be given away like a cup of coffee. 😳 I had to warn some of my female friends to “keep their hands off” or my gloves would come off, when my sons were teenagers and they started to make comments about how good looking my boys are. I’m curious..even if that was “normal” in that culture to do that….did any one ask the girl what she wanted to do? 😳 did any one give a shit what she wanted even? 😳 My god, this breaks my heart 😢😢
