After a long season we're finally going to the National Athletics Championships in Kristiansand. I'm competing in the 100m and 200m this weekend, and I have big hopes after getting four consecutive silvers in the 100m and two golds in the 200m previous years.
Enjoy!

I think the very long season this year messed up quite a lot of people, even at the highest level, look at Trayvon Bromell running 9.77 in June and then not even going sub 10 for the Olympics, same with ronnie Baker under performing when it mattered. Just make sure you learn from the experience and next year you will peak at the perfect time, keep being awesome!!
@nicolasvalera1496
@nicolasvalera1496 2 года назад
That's because of the American preparation, they train for the Trials and National Championship and that's a couple months before the Olympics
@killiancurran5143
@killiancurran5143 2 года назад
@@nicolasvalera1496 ye thats a good point, they have to peak for 2 different competitions just to qualify but they are also on PEDs, much easier for them to maintain or improve performances whilst for anyone natural, peaking for a race that involves cutting volume more than twice or three times a year will be the max. Anymore and you will almost certainly under perform

Amazing journey, what a great season. I knew you would break 21 but I honestly didn’t expect you to smash it the way you did. I’m a 400m sprinter but your races and training inspire me. Keep going man we are all rooting for you. Hope you can enjoy a rest and be ready to run super fast next year 🙏🏽

Back in the day we called this being flat… no matter how much you try you won’t come out of it. You feel like you feet are stuck in the bucket, in a day or two your legs will start feeling heavier and heavier maybe even sore… you can get injured so be carful. I use to force athletes to take few days off… but interesting enough in about a week or so you will be able to run again as if nothing happened. Your buddy is saying time to relax… :) congrats on a great season!

Good job man, keep it up and you will get there. As a coach i really enjoy your videos of training sessions and races with all your mind processing. I was wondering what's your thought on muscle mass in sprint runners. Lately i hear different coaches drifting to a less max streangth preparation, but i see you were one of the most hypertrophycal athletes in sprints. Is it something you look foreward in your training programs?
@hovejoha
@hovejoha 2 года назад
Hypertrophy is not something I aim for in my training. When I do strength training I mostly do explosive work, and If I lift heavy I only do about 3x3 lifts. I do have a tendancy to easily gain weight anyways. When looking at my sprint times, there is no correlation in lower weight and faster times, though I don't exclude that from being relevant in the future. I believe the optimal weight is different for each athlete, and power to weight ratio might be the most important factor in considering that.

How many total races did you run this year, including prelims & finals?
@hovejoha
@hovejoha 2 года назад
I shared this with my channel members a month ago actually. I ran 49 races in 2021. I had 50 individual in 2016 and 2017, but back then I was running youth champs which included more relaxed races, and also indoor champs which we didn't have this year. Considering that, this season was a packed one. I wrote on my Instagram after the Nationals; I might have learned the disadvantage of not "picking one's battles" this season. I believe competitions usually is the best speed stimuli for myself but might have overdone it a little bit in August this year.
@emilstorgaard9642
@emilstorgaard9642 2 года назад
@@hovejoha Damn dude- 50 races is a massive amount. I'd say half of that is even too much. But you know your body best ✌
@hovejoha
@hovejoha 2 года назад
@@emilstorgaard9642 It is quite a bit indeed, and might be something to reconsider going forward for me. I don't think 25 should be considered too much for a developing athlete though. Let's say an Indoor national champs has 5 races in a weekend. Outdoor Champs has 6. A junior or international championship and on top of that is 6 more. We're now at 17 races, and that's only across 3 weekends, we still have 49 weeks left. Three weekends of 100-100-200, and we're at 26 races, I don't think that is too much in a year. Of course it is different for everyone, and 10 races might be enough for some, but I believe one should compete more than that (if you're healthy) to get good at competing. Also worth to note that 3x 60m might not be more draining than 1x 200m. De Grasse ran 23 individual races this year, only one of them indoors though. Bromell ran 28 individual races. 20-30 might be a number to aim for, but one needs to remember that these guys usually don't get to the start line just for some good speed-training or to just have a warmup/test race.

From a physiological standpoint you’re body needed real TLC not just an easy week or less volume during training . Racing 50 times in one season to hit certain times is outrageous. Your body was beginning to burn out and you were overtraining it. I know as an competitor we want to go go all the time but sometimes simply a proper resting protocol when the numbers not adding up. I want to see you compete at world champs but the way you’re going to get there if you give your body some time to recover and heal up fully. Your fitness showing that you’re 20.6/ 10.4 shape you just have to rest the lamborghini for a while and easy back into it.

A 3.67 for the 30m is crazy, Bolt ran a 3.63 without reaction time in his WR race, also ive seen your vids where you run about a 3.95 without reaction time. Are you sure the distance was correct? Love your content!
@hovejoha
@hovejoha 11 месяцев назад
The 30m distance is correct, but as you say it seems fast, this is because I'm having a 60cm "flying" acceleration before the timing starts in this video. In other videos where I'm around 3.85-4.05s I'm timing from the moment my thumb leaves the ground. Thanks!

if at any point during the season you are worse than the start of your season, is it a bad idea to take a 2-3 days of break? Just let your body get to its best and refreshed form.
@hovejoha
@hovejoha 2 года назад
I don't think it is a bad idea to take a couple of days of if you're feeling very tired. Especcialy towards the end of the season. But it will depeond a little on the circumstance, the level of the athlete, and their adaption to volume.

Indeed. I have set a lot of PR's this year and for that I am greatful. I have gone many years not coming close to the progression this year. Going forwards it will be important to get pleasure from the little improvements, be that technique, execution, strategy, or mindset. It's important to see the learning in each race as a win in itself eaven when it does not end in the hoped end result.

I know these moments all too well. You thought you cracked the code, but then "regress" back to your old form. Thats though, but without wanting to sound like a "all-knowing-asshole", I think your mindset is great. You know what youre capable of now and just have to understand why you performed as well as you did at these times. Im pretty sure you already looked through all your training and comeptitions logs for cues, but from personal experience it also can be something like specific cues in training, certain life changes or just stuff like spending more time with your gf = higher testosterone lol. Looking at variables outside of training can be valuable too, if you not already did that.
@hovejoha
@hovejoha 2 года назад
Indeed I think you're right in some of your thoughts here, thanks for sharing! Fun fact; here in Norway we use the German word "besserwisser" for "all-knowing-asshole", you don't strike me as one though. A lot of the negative trend has to do with not running in Maxfly (even if the break easy they are a lot faster 0.1-0.20s on 100m and 0.3-0.4s on 200m). The Winner in 200m Nationals used Maxfly and even if you both got a bit tight in the final 50metres he could keep his stridelenght due to the Maxfly. I promise you, switch shoes and the times will be better again.❤🤜🤛

Indeed my fastest 200m was in the maxfly (before they punctured), but I'm not 100% convinced yet. They might help up to 0.1s/100m for some though.
