In this video I take to the busy streets of New York City to shoot a fashion editorial in 2 different styles -- natural light and using a studio strobe.
Each one has their benefits, so hopefully this shows what can be achieved for those of you who are all about that natural light and those of you who love to lug the gear on location!
Which one wins?
Pop a comment below on which one you prefer and WHY. 👇

I like them both and selecting a winner would mainly depend on what the initial goal is.

My favourite is strobes. I think the photo with natural light is a fashion photo, where it is important how the skin or the dress look (even if it is sepia toned). The photo with artificial light is more creative, innovative, more visually striking. By reducing ambient light and using a gel, the color scheme is more pleasant and your eyes are directed towards the model and her dress. It's really awesome!

Natural light is my favorite here and in general I prefer natural light. But the strobe one is really cool too.

Strobes definitely win for me. Having the background go so dark and the colors go so rich with the teal would make for an EXTRAORDINARY fine art wall art print! Natural light would too, but I just feel like so few photographers do dramatic strobe photography with numerous lights outdoors and on location. So it creates something truly special and adds a sense of importance to the shot. Plus I just LOVE the colors!

Which one I like better and why? Both are excellent shots. Period. But now you ask for opinion, here it is. I feel the framing and point of view of the ambient light shot is more to my liking. The "ton sur ton" (in my language we use the French original for the concept - tone on tone is proper English?) of the strobe version, I like better. This is because the sky has turned blue in the under exposure of the ambient. The ambient version is slightly sweeter on the model - primarily because of angle and the slight over-exposure in the strobe lit face. Your high fashion magazine editor could choose either, I guess, just depending on the overall mood of the overall images story they have in mind. Bottom line, the blue one has more impact.

Both are awesome, but for me the strobe version just works better since I personally don't feel the city view here was particularly interesting. You mainly just see the big building on the left in the natural version, so it really could be anywhere. Love your work, Lindsay!

This was epic! Always looking forward to these videos! It’s a hard choice between both I love both! But if I had to choose it would be the studio strobes look super cool and much more dramatic! Definitely shows more effort in the shot at a glance and captures the eye!

Natural light for sure on this one! There is a dynamic feel to it that the strobe lacks a little. BUT it all depends on where the photo is going to be used. For a Vogue full page ad, I could see either being perfect depending on the brand.

Natural light is my favorite - the texture of the buildings, the crosswalk and the definition in the face and dress all contribute more in the natural light version. The strobe look is dramatic but I think it would be better in a studio or on a theater stage. For me, the city makes the shot more interesting because of the juxtaposition of the dress and the buildings. I feel you lose too much of the city in the strobe version.

Great shots both, and really useful vid. I prefer the natural light. Captures the whole context/story in the city, wider and subtler range of tonal gradients and translucency of the fabric - that is lost with strobe. Strobe makes for more dramatic form of the model, but the city is lost and buildings are just shaded blocks in the background. I suppose the strobe shot is good for a mag cover, but for an image I would look at more than once the natural light wins for me. As ever, horses for courses.

Lindsay I love both shots. The shot where you used the strobes gives the Photo a beautiful ethereal look which is very different from the norm. However, the natural light shot brings in more of the environment that tells a story, and warm tones in the shot are beautiful as well. you couldn't go wrong with either shot. Kenny

GOOD light is my favorite- how you get there is up to you! No client/viewer cares about the process (us photographers do of course!)- just the final result! Knowing how to use strobes is important if you want to be able to create/control light in ANY situation- a pro cannot afford to wait around for the perfect light to occur- you have to get the job done.

I'm mostly for the gel version. It is dramatic and brings model and dress to the center which I love, this is my favorite . The buildings - is in a great mood with gel. Both are fantastic but I prefer the atmosphere of the natural light in this one. The strobe light catches attention for sure, but for me the effect seems a bit self-serving, like many similar photos using coloured gels and fancy lighting. In the end, I guess it depends on how and where you want to use the photo, what mood you are trying to communicate.

These are gorgeous either way but for me to choose one tho I love using flash would be the natural light shot. The strobe was dramatic but for my personal taste I liked the natural light much for the same reason as Jude Bowerman below. I too like the buildings and I think they add character. In the strobe photo the buildings are so dark you lose the texture and the character. I would have also loved it if the two photos had been shot with the same focal length. It would have helped in the comparison. In the strobe photo the roof of the shorter building on the left, which is furthest away, is at the model's shoulder level and for me it is very distracting. In the natural light photo the building appears much further away and the roof is at the height of her elbow and is not distracting. All said, both though are great.

The natural light won it for me, but my opinion has more to do than just the light. The pose is striking, the flow of the dress feels more like a windy day (over being flagged by assistance), and the post-editing has an 'old school Brooklyn' beautiful sepia tone. It feels more like a luxurious street photo, where the blue-lighted feels like a new school in an old city. Either way, amazing work as always.

Both are spectacular - though I'm biased towards strobes. In this case it has more punch, whereas if the color of the dress was different in the natural light, there would be a more separation in colors between the dress and buildings in the background. Would've loved to have seen more background/less crop in these.

Both are great and would depend on the final use of the photos. I think I would have liked the background for the photos with strobes to be slightly less underexposed. Lindsay, your shooting the mirrorless made me think of myself. I have been "on" mirrorless for a year now (Nikon Z). And 2 weeks ago I "discovered" it has a touchscreen that I can flip out. Now have you ever, in the past, shot with a Hasselblad 500 series with the look down chimney-loupe viewfinder? Do you then remember it had left-right swapped in that viewfinder? (Or Rolleiflex, Mamiya, Zenza, etc.) So, I flipped the display out and used touch to focus and shoot. When I needed to recompose after a couple shots, I turned the camera the wrong way, as if I was looking down into the old Hasselblad. I had to laugh about myself. The fun thing with the flip out viewfinder is that shooting from a low angle is much easier (for a 6' 1" body). Flip the display out and look down on it. Set to face recognition and eye AF and continuous AF and keep firing. It's funny how some cognitive dissonance apparently prevented me from using the mirrorless as a smartphone or today's mirrorless and I kept using it as the old SLR. Rut?

Personally I love both your results and sinceI have worked with both along the years I can say: it depends a lot about what the client want see into his final result, what kind of feeling! And if I have to choose for a personal project it will depend on my mood because I like them both Natural Light and Studio Strobes! For the retouching part I have observed from my experience that strobes are helping the editing process so it will be more efficient to use them but while shooting with the strobes vs natural light it will take longer because of the setting up them and you need more people into the team as well, so ^_^

I'm a huge strobe lover and do these types of shots with a backdrop of city/traffic lights. That said I like the effect to not scream "strobe" so in this case I lead towards the natural light ones. You never mentioned if you take advantage of continuous shooting. Sometime when getting the dress "poof" just right natural light does offer the luxury of shooting 10 fps. Just curious as to technique. Love the channel , and your courses. Keep them coming.
