Natural / Neglect / Freeform Dreadlocks information. What are neglect dreadlocks? How do you start the neglect process? what are the pros and cons of neglect dreadlocks?
This method requires you to do nothing... nothing!. If you leave your hair along for long enough it will in fact form deadlocks. To use the neglect method successfully you simply need to stop brushing and conditioning your hair.
Pros:
This method will create completely 'natural' dreadlocks. Their appearance will differ from those attained by other methods because the hair will not be constrained to any predetermined root pattern.
This is obviously the cheapest method because you don't need to buy anything special or pay anyone to create the locks for you.
This method doesn't require any hair or scalp work so you will not experience the sore scalp that some of the other methods immediately result in.
This method doesn't require any products / no waxes or gels are required for this method
Cons:
This is in some ways the slowest method for attaining dreadlocks. While all methods will take 1 year+ to mature, Neglect dreads take a really long time before they even look like dreadlocks.
You have very little control over how they look. The other methods have a vary degree of control over how thick or thin the dreadlocks are because you create them from the root upwards and therefore the dreadlocks will always be as thick or as thin as the root pattern you used. In the case of neglect dreadlocks you are leaving them to their own devices and this can result in very uneven looking dreadlocks. You will have to periodically pull the matted sections of hair apart yourself in order to stop them forming one huge dreadlock, but that's about all the control you will have.

i am caucasian with extremely straight and thick hair. i did my dreads by only using residue free shampoo. i did not section, twist and rip or anything like that. it took about three whole years for them to actually lock and mature and i ended up with only 23 dreads. im pretty satisfied with them now although i did stress quite a bit during the 3 years it took. i dont have the best roots/sections but the dreads themselves are pretty beatiful now if i say so myself. my best advice for anyone using any method at any point in your journey is just dont worry about it. even just forget about your hair all together. i learned that they only get better given time regardless.

I'm someone who has used both backcombing and neglect/patience/freeform in his life. My current set that I've had for three years are from the neglect method. It was an emotional rollercoaster. During the process and though they were clean, there were days and weeks that my hair just looked so terrible to a point I was considering brushing them out or cutting them. Thank goodness for tams/hats. I wanted some consistency with neglect dreads (which is almost unheard of) I allowed the to grow together to a point I now have 10 huge dreads on my head. The reason I went with this current method, is because I didn't have anyone to help backcomb them. I love them and wouldn't have them any other way. Peace.

Awesome video! I find I am very drawn to the neglect method.Even though I don't know how they will turn out once time goes on,but that's kind of the interesting part I find about it that draws me to it.I found when I did have shoulder length hair and came out of the bath,my hair was all knotted up very fast and some of them did already look like dreads, they were separated and knotted right tight. They were also hard as hell to brush out every night after my bath and sometimes I would feel like saying hell with this and just forget brushing them altogether because of the feeling of my arms going to fall off lol I have wavy thick hair, but I have no idea if that's the reason why they would get matted so fast or if it's the way I wash my hair,I don't know.Anyways I feel like I am going to first go with the neglect method and see what happens with it all.hopefully my boss don't get at me for having a lot of matted knots in my hair,he's kind of uptight which I hate and I hope I can dye them the way I want to as well.I hate jobs that control a persons hair and body.I mean as long as a person is clean that's all that should matter I think.

I grew out a fro for about two years before it started locking up on its own. I love the freeform method. All I use is Guava and Pineapple oil twice a week and I let my hair do the rest. I used to use sea salt and water to help the new growth lock up, but I didnt like how dry it made my hair feel. My hair has been locking for almost a year now, and I have to say Im extremely satisfied with this method. The hair on the side is more matted than the hair on the top and back of my head because of how I sleep...and Im perfectly fine with that. I also have never seperated any of my locs, and dont plan to either. (CONGOS!!!!!!!) Anyway, I just wanted to share a little bit of knowledge that Ive picked up so far on my Locking Journey: 1. DO NOT TWIST THEM YOURSELF!!!!! Let your hair just do its thing. (Especially the new growth.) 2. Too much of anything is bad. (Sea salt, oils, ect.) 3. Avoid too much heat. It causes hair to brittle. (And maybe fall off if the roots arent strong enough!) 4. Avoid too much water. Give your hair some time to do its thing before you wash them again. (If you wash them that is.) 5. Patience...and lots of it. Oh, and one more thing...I use water to wash my hair....thats it. Oils and water. Happy Locking!!!

I started freeform dreads again last week. Keeping them clean is essential, last time I only washed 1-2 times a week and my hair was so greasy all the time they didn`t form. After a year of freeforming then I only had one or two knots that could maybe almost be considered a baby dreadlock. 1-2 times works for some people but my hair needs more washing to stay clean.

My ego says no don't go freeform bc it may turn out bad/not how I "want" it but something deeper inside me says it feels more right to go freeform. Something about damaging my hair to obtain dreads (bc something like backcombing will cause microscopic damage to your hair) just seems wrong. Decisions

Paul Flurry It’s not. I did it a few years back. You must also not run fingers through your hair and try not to tie it up too often. The hair needs to moove. Also, in the beginning, it helps to rub your hair with a towel a few times a day for 20 or so minutes. That way you get the knots started and they take over on their own.

Thank you for making this video! It is absolutely unbelievable -- in a very ironic way -- how many misconceptions there are about free-forming. Yes, I just left them alone and they locked on their own. No, I don't "do anything" to them. Yes, I can wash my hair and they "stay in." Hair, when not brushed or covered in soap residue, will knot. Such a simple concept!

I had twist and rip dreadlocks for a year, I brushed them out because I died them too much and I just wanted healthier dreads. I started the twist and rip method again. I was able to put in six at the bottom of my scalp. I've now decided to keep them separate and have been free forming the rest of my hair. I definitely like the freeform way better. I'm just concerned about getting big locks. I've been separating the thicker knots that have been forming to prevent big locks. Can you separate beginner locks too much? My hair tangles super easy, so they're not going away, I just want to make sure I'm not slowing down the process even more than what it is to begin with.

I have a question, and I want to give some back story before I ask it. I understand if you're too busy to read all of this, so my question is separated out at the bottom. I want to share my journey for the same reason you want to share yours. My journey has taken me to many places. Back in August, I found my first freeform dreadlock, and it was quite a surprise to find in such a perfect shape and size (to my liking) - plus, I've wanted dreads for years but didn't know they could form so easily. After I asked someone with beautiful dreads about what to do (at the time, I wanted to get my information from people face to face rather than online), they said basically what you said - that they will form on their own and start popping up like trees. Well, sure enough, that's exactly what started happening (I hadn't brushed, used conditioner, or cut my hair in a year and a half since I had it cut really short, so by this time it was about shoulder length) She also told me to make sure the roots don't get too tight, so I started rubbing my dreads between my fingers from top to bottom. This didn't really help, but I thought it did. In retrospect, it wasn't a long enough conversation (she was just ringing me up at a register), and I didn't fully understand her. So for several months, every few days, I would work strenuously on separating and "twisting" my dreads, only for temporary relief. I eventually discovered the magic of Dr. Bronner's liquid soap, and ever since I've found that my dreads are forming with much more ease, and I rarely have to do much separating. I also stopped "twisting" them after meeting a girl with some of the most beautiful natural dreadlocks with very similar hair to mine and realized the uniqueness of my hair was nothing to dread (no pun intended but that's hilarious - and accurate no matter how you look at it). So after 8 months of natural dreadlocks, they're forming beautifully, but some of my earliest dreads are kind of scary, taking sharp turns, bunched up at the ends, thinner at the tops, and just totally rebellious (totally in my nature to rebel against trying to control myself). My very first dread looks nowhere near as beautiful as it started - it looks like a Popeye the sailor man forearm and fist. Is there any way to fix this??? I'm afraid to mess them up worse. If you have a video that explains this, the link will suffice. Thank you so much for your videos. They've been a huge help.

When I did neglect I had one giant one at the back, it started off okay but then within a month or two all the hair around it became part of it, I should have been more careful lol. Anyways, I wanted to ask something, it might sound silly but I need to ask. If you have lots of thin locks but twice as many loose frizzy hair around the roots, these loose frizzy hairs will lock up right? Will they be last part that will lock? I found this in my experience anyway and just checking before I go through it again. Also do the thinner dreads get fatter when maturer?

I'm trying to do this, I've already have hair locking together but of course it's not dreads yet, I use coconut oil to keep my skin and hair hydrated, is this wrong? will they not form with oiled hair? I also use argan oil. btw my hair is naturally curly/afro (big curls).

What if you have thick and dense hair, but it is really smooth and silky??? I have a couple of what look like knots..... just let them be? Hair length is about 8-11cm

So when he says don't condition your hair, does that also mean don't moisturize it daily? Also how long in between washes?
